Book Description
ADOBE HOUSES FOR TODAY features 12 plans for compact, beautifully-proportioned adobe homes in modern and traditional styles. Yet the book offers much more. The richly illustrated text shows how the basic houses, designed for today's smaller families, can be as flexible as a set of building blocks. Intriguing drawings demonstrate how readers can expand and adapt the plans to fit their own budgets, family sizes, style preferences, and building sites.
After a brief look at adobe's rich history, ADOBE HOUSES FOR TODAY surveys adobe's advantages as a building material. Next, readers take an eye-opening tour through the facts and fantasies of energy conservation. Then, the heart of the book illustrates the basic and expanded versions of the plans, using them as examples of design techniques that increase livability and control costs in any house. The book also explains site requirements, adobe construction, and estimating basics with an adobe house that "assembles itself." ADOBE HOUSES FOR TODAY and its associated construction drawings are valuable, enjoyable tools not only for those buying, building, or remodeling a house, but also for contractors, drafters, drafting teachers, and real estate professionals.
Customer Reviews:
professional quality for the do it your selfer.......2006-02-25
this book was very informative, and had mulitple plans with all kinds of potential additions. great book for someone looking for a book that can give them concrete ideas for building an adobe house.
Start Basic and Expand as Needed!.......2005-09-25
I agree with other reviewers that one of the most important features of this book is that in the 12 example plans presented, you can economically plan and build the Basic smaller version of 850 to 1000 sq. ft. and when the need arises, add on to the design. If any design meets your needs, you can purchase a working blueprint for $25 including postage and also included at no extra cost for the more technically minded, are a CD-ROM of a CAD version of the chosen working drawing that you can alter making this one of the most complete and convenient packages I have had the pleasure to use.
The one reviewer who said, "If you are looking for old traditional Adobe home plans this is not what you are looking for." was correct. But, if you are looking for a modern adobe home with passive solar traits that is well thought out and will lead you step-by-step, this is the book/package for you. Covers both traditional "flat roofs" and "gabled roofs".
Adobe Houses for Today.......2005-08-08
Adobe Houses for Today is a concise discussion of building with adobe. All the house plans are well thought out and enable a core house to be built first. While living in the core house, you can build on additional rooms without making structural changes to the core house. The homes appeal to a variety of builders from southwest flat roof styles to homes with gable roofs. Excellent resource.
A Great Start!.......2002-08-17
This is a terrific book to get started thinking about the adobe home you want to build, especially if you're planning on building "green." The floor plans and accompanying CAD generated images are practical and straightforward. The text covers the basics of adobe home building, including the advantages and disadvantages the owner may want to consider first. If you're considering building a modest adobe home, this book is an excellent place to begin. Working blueprints of the floor plans are available for a minimal cost as well should the owner decide to adopt one as is.
For Todays homebuilder.......2002-08-15
If you are looking for old traditional Adobe home plans this is not what you are looking for. Other than, this is a very interesting book, very useful in where to get things done.

Book Description
The photographs of Jock Sturges are the record of people he cherishes: mothers and daughters, friends, children. Before his 8 x 10 camera, they show their relationship not only to one another, but also of the inner self to the world. Magical in their detail, these images are a collaboration of trust and admiration between artist and subject. Jayne Anne Phillips's compelling prose both illuminates the photographs and explores the unending sensuality and complexity of the bond between mother and child.
Whether photographing on naturist beaches in the south of France, in the communes of northern California, or in the affluent, East Coast summer resort of Block Island, Jock Sturges is at home with his subjects. Many of them are families with whom he has deep ties and whom he photographs as they are, clothed or nude, revealing the iconography of family affection. Each summer Sturges returns to visit the friends whose uninhibited grace, warmth, and beauty he so lyrically captures. He is now making pictures of girls and boys whose parents he first photographed as children.
In 1990 the Federal Bureau of Investigation entered Jock Sturges's San Francisco studio and seized his work, implying violation of child pornography laws. Citizens, artists, and the media responded with outrage. With The Last Day of Summer, Aperture accords to Jock Sturges's humane and lovely vision the dignity and respect it so richly deserves.
Customer Reviews:
The Real Deal.......2007-09-01
Jock Sturges will probably stand as one of the great photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries....someday. His work with the friends and strangers who populate summer beaches and cottages where clothing is optional, year after year, testifies to his respect for his subjects and his affirming humanity. In current American culture, where hypersexuality is the marketing tool of choice, and merchants exploit every normal insecurity about appearance to sell endless crap to yearning multitudes, Sturges's pictures show us how beautiful we are, in all our shapes, sizes and ages, in nothing but the skin we are born with.
As a photographer, I am amazed at Sturges's ability to convince people to simply offer themselves up to his visual instincts. He returns to the same venues again and again, and becomes part of the places himself, rather than an intruder, and the people in his photographs see the work that results. Seeing themselves as he sees them, they appear to trust him completely. He steals no souls, but rather, affirms the conviction that we have souls in the first place. When asked to suggest a present for my own 16 year old daughter, a young woman with endless interests and curiosity, including photography, I could think of no better work to show her at this point in her life.
Not All Nude, But All Wonderful.......2006-07-24
This is what children, young people growing up, and parents with children look like: people in bathing suits, jeans, everyday attire, as well as nude. There are photographs on the beach, in a tree, on a tricycle (one of the best as a photographic design, in my opinion), in hammocks, standing...a whole range of locales and postures.
While it astounds me that anyone could think this wonderful collection is child pornography, I *can* see the concern. There's no doubt in my mind that a genuine pedophile would be attracted to this, and for all the most unfortunate reasons. Still, this is an accurate and sensitive representation of something that seems almost vanished from the world--the innocence of people comfortable with themselves, their bodies, and with each other. Alas, this is our loss.
This collection of touching, humorous, and occasionally beautiful photographs is our gain.
You'll be moved.......2006-02-22
If you are after pictures for the sexual excitement, look somewhere else. Yes there are naked women and men, young women and men, and even boys and girls of adolescent age, but you'd have to have a pretty sick mind to find them sexually exciting.
Rather on the contrary this are works of art with some of the best printing you'll see in your life (I'd love to see the originals, as I suspect as good as the book edition is, it still doesn't make it justice), with that simple beauty and simple "laiser faire" that is simply breathtaking.
Jock Sturges first, not best book, does have some nice work in it.......2005-10-07
Mr. Sturges first photography book, it shows the style his fans all know and love but as a first effort has a less polished feel to it. I was surprised to see some pictures taken in Rhode Island, the later books seem to consist of France, California and Oregon with no East Coast U.S.
As always with Mr. Sturges books the subject matter is mostly nude but there are several clothed photos here as well, more than will be found in later books. The style is all well done,(many very nice images), the book is certainly worth owning but doesn't seem quite the quality of the books from "Radiant Identities" onward.
Sturges' Continuing Family Relationship - As we grow up.......2005-08-09
A superb example of natural people doing what comes naturally captured in a wholesome way. Through Jock Sturges' images, we see what we see around us every day - families growing older. His nudes are prime examples of beauty - of which Jock captures with a particular reverence. The subjects represent whole body acceptance - something our society lacks today. The book is well done, and the images crisp and of excellent tone.

Book Description
It's that wonderfully wacky, fabulously funny feline again! Join GARFIELD as he cavorts through this cavalcade of comics with more zest than a spicy Italian dinner! He'll keep you laughing so hard, you won't stop 'til the fun is over!
Customer Reviews:
Very, Very Funny!.......2002-05-13
I'm a big fan of Garfield. He's my favorite comic strip character and I always pick up his books. The 8th garfield Treasury may not be perfect (where are the logos?) but if I laugh really hard during the book, I'm satisfied that I made a good purchase.
In Garfield's 8th full-color romp through Sunday comics, the big fat glutton visits the Nerd Hall Of Fame, watches Jon's chase with the lawnmover, goes to a pet show, and does his usual: eats, sleeps, and kicks Odie off the table.
The colors in this Treasury are a little darker than some of the previous ones, but the drawings look good, and Garfield's bad, fat attitude is apparent throughout.
All Garfield fans will crawl over this book. A good buy.
this is a good book.......1999-10-22
this book was very funny and is better than a some hairypickle. Garfield is a great comic strip.
Oh My God It Is Funny.......1999-06-12
This is the most hilarious Garfield Treasury yet. I reccomend this book to everyone out there.
Garfield is far better than some hairy pickle!.......1998-08-03
I think Garfield is one of the greatest strips of the modern era, and this book almost lives up to it. My only problem with the Garfield treasuries is the absence of the logo panels. Keep up the good work, Davis; and go back to whence you came, Bodega! Get back to your pickles!!
garfield is such a big hairy pickle.......1998-05-28
i did not like this book. eigth garfield treasure? hell, they should have stopped with number one. lets face it jim davis obviously cannot draw real tuff so he draws big fat dumb cats, stupid weenie dogs, and a big dumb idiot jon who probably eats too many hairy pickles. if i were a parent and concerned about what my child reads then i would definitely not recommend this book to anyone. It is horrible, difficult to read and the pictures just down right stink. oh yeah that nermal character is so stupid also, who ever heard of a cute cat, all cats are ugly hairy and smelly just like pickles. if you want a good book with lots of stupid animals and stupid hairy pickles then you will love this absolutely horrible book

Book Description
The bizarre and often humorous creations of René Magritte, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and other surrealists are showcased in this activity guide for young artists. Foremost among the surrealists, Salvador Dalí was a painter, filmmaker, designer, performance artist, and eccentric self-promoter. His famous icons, including the melting watches, double images, and everyday objects set in odd contexts, helped to define the way people view reality and encourage children to view the world in new ways. Dalí's controversial life is explored while children trace the roots of some familiar modern images. These wild and wonderful activities include making Man Ray-inspired solar prints, filming a dreamscape video, writing surrealist poetry, making collages, and assembling art with found objects.
Customer Reviews:
Try It You'll Like It.......2006-08-31
This is not only an informative book, there are many fun activities that will bring out the artist in anyone willing to try them. Love Dali and I used this book in a art class presentation ( I got it out of our local library) enjoyed the book so much and tried several of the activities. Had to own the book.
The art history is pretty good but the activities are great.......2004-02-19
I have read several of these Chicago Review Press volumes that combine art or history with 21 activities geared for kids ages 10 and up, and Michael Elsohn Ross' "Salvador Dali and the Surrealists: Their Lives and Ideas with 21 Activities" is the best of the bunch I have seen to date. The art history section is excellent but this time around the activities are even better. Art teachers looking for ways of introducing their young students to art in general and the surrealists in particular will find these activities to be extremely useful. Of course, in this age of schools dealing with deep budget cuts this book might be even more useful for teachers who do not have training in art or who are simply doing an art unit in their class.
Ross does a wonderful job of putting the Surrealists in historical context. Although he starts by looking at Dali's early life and first impressionist works, Ross tells young readers how World War I and the birth of the Dada movement, started to move art in a new direction. Throughout the book Ross provides looks at not only important artists like Pablo Picasso, Rene Magritte, and Frida Kaholo, but also Sigmund Freud, Francisco Franco, and Harpo Marx. When you get to the Marx Brothers and the idea of absurd comedy that they represented in their films such as "A Night at the Opera," then you can rest assured that Ross is providing not only breadth but also depth to his treatment of Surrealism. Dali is clearly the paradigmatic surrealist artist, which may well just be another way of saying the most popular, but that distinction will not matter to young students who will be fascinated by the famous melted watches in "The Persistence of Memory" (1931) and the gaping square hole in the back of the figure in "The Weaning of Furniture-Nutrition" (1934). I was surprised that they did not show the infamous harp, covered with silverware, that Dali made for Harpo Marx.
Consequently, the text of the book, where Ross looks at how surrealism drew on the revolutionary theories of Sigmund Freud to bring the creativity of the subconscious to art and details the fanciful creations of Magritte, Miro, Dali and other artists, stands on its own as providing a superb introduction to Dali and the surrealists. However, the activities Ross came up with are even better. Starting with such simple ideas a finding Pictures Everywhere, Ross moves on to tricks for altering the way you see the world (Crystal Eyes), and the inventiveness of Free Association and Inkblots. A series of activities are based on the work of specific artists, such as the Splotch Art of Joan Miro, the Solar Prints of Man Ray, the Surreal Objects of Marcel Duchamp, the Art in a Box of Max Ernst, and Dali's technique of Frottage. Of course, when they get to the concept of Hair Art, students might always recognize that from what some of their classmates have already been doing. Ross provides some actual examples of student projects based on these exercise as well as works by great artists that inspired the ideas. Even younger children will enjoy the "Exquisite Corpse" Drawing activity.
Although I supposed I could always glue a lobster to a rotary telephone on my own, perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay to this book is that I wish I had young students that I could get to try some of these out. My youngest daughter should be careful the next time she comes over because I do not think it is likely that I will come up with a way of getting my online Pop Culture class to do this, much as I would like to. This book is so inspiring that I can see teachers who only deal with art tangentially in their class to find a way to work some of this information and several of these exercises into their classes. There are also plenty of other great Surrealist artists for these students to learn more about as well as well as imaginatively inspirational paintings like Magritte's "Time Transfixed" (1938).
Book Description
In the summer of 1950, a most unlikely group was assembled to represent its country in the first soccer World Cup since World War II. The Americans were outsiders to the sport, the underdogs of the event, a 500-to-1 long shot. But they were also proud and loyal men -- to one another, to their communities, and certainly to their country. Facing almost no time to prepare, opponents with superior training, and skepticism from the rest of the world, this ragtag group of unknowns was inspired to a stunning victory over England and one of the most thrilling upsets in the history of sports.
Written by critically acclaimed author
Geoffrey Douglas, and now a film directed by David Anspaugh (
Hoosiers),
The Game of Their Lives takes us back to a time before million-dollar contracts and commercial endorsements, and introduces us to the athletes -- the Americans -- who showed the world just how far a long shot could really go.
Customer Reviews:
great story.......2007-06-27
i thought it was fantastic. it's not as much about soccer as i thought it would be, and it's not the most well written book i've seen, but the long stretches where it seems like the author transcribed a recorded conversation with one of the players are amazing. some of the stories the players recall provide an insight to a time in American history that i never knew. really did give a unique view of an unforgettable moment in US Soccer history. also, very quick read.
A fine read, but it could have been so much more........2006-01-24
Rather than investigating the events surrounding the team from an academic or even journalistic perspective, Douglas basically records the recollections of the surviving members, with more emphasis on their idyllic childhoods than anything that happened at or after the World Cup. There was much more material to be had here had the book had a wider scope or more comprehensive research. As an example, Walter Bahr is one of the seminal figures of American soccer, but the descriptions of him in the book are limited to sepia-toned recollections of his youth in "simpler times." Still and all, it is nice to read about a team that history has not accorded its due, and if one can accept the book for what it is rather than wishing it were something more, the short time it takes to read it is worthwhile.
Good Movie for any die hard soccer player.......2005-10-16
Although the movie may be missing pieces here and there or not go deep enough into character development, it's still a good heartwarming story. Any person with a true love for the sport will connect with it in some way.
Not Many Options.......2003-10-29
I would recommend this book a US soccer fan that may only know the final score for this historic game. This book does describe the state of US soccer in the 50's. For example, some people may not be aware that there is a national club championship open to all US teams (the National Challenge Cup, today this cup tournament is called the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup). This team was made up of players that came from some of the teams that won the cup such as Simpkins-Ford (1948 & 1950 with Gino Pariano, Charlie Colombo, Frank Borghi, and Frank Wallace) or New York Brookhattan (1945 Joe Gaetjens team). For the die hard soccer fan this book needs more details on how this team won its spot in the World Cup. Also, there really is not enough detail on the game itself, which may be a result of the dearth of information even at the time (still there is enough there to get your hear pounding and help the reader imagine the excitement of the game). Considering how the English team felt humiliated by result they sure did not want to discuss the game and the US press could hardly care any less. Also, it would be nice to have the perspective of the English players; however, that was not the writer's purpose. This is a story about the men who played the game because they loved it. There needs to be a more detailed treatment of these men and specifically Joseph "Joe" Gaetjens. That being said there is not much out there on the subject and this is still an enjoyable story of perseverance. I hope this book and the upcoming movie bring more people to examine this
More than just the game!.......2002-11-04
I can understand those who want more about the soccer than the team members. But consider that this book isn't just about the upset, it's about the people who made it happen. It's as much about the social history of the team as anything else. Could the author have spent more time following up reserves and scouring the globe for accounts of the game? Probably.
But I think the story would suffer for that. Could someone write a focused, technical account of the game and the 1950 World Cup? Probably. But the social and personal contexts enrich the story. It could stand to be a little longer, and perhaps fleshing out the other team members would help in that regard. But what there is of this book is more interesting because we're given background.

Spiritual Practitioner & 12 Step Recovery Review.......2003-10-24
This is a fabulous book! I used it in my lecture at the Utah University School of Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies and generated quite a buzz.
This book is an affirmative structure that supports care-givers and children to win in the daily walk of life.
I use this simple and straight-forward tool as a resource and teach it to those in 12 step based residential treatment, in my seminars at New Thought churches and in private practice. I have interviewed the author on my TV talk show and used this interview as a way to introduce the book to others. As people hear about the book and view my interview with Jim, I have been asked to present it as part of my seminar for Family Drug Court, and for caseworkers in the Adoption and Foster care systems.
The professionals attending my lecures have asked that the author write his next book on Addiction Recovery. The method used is universal for creating a positive construct to bring order and easy comprehension of translating principles and core values to all those who have the desire to play. Congratulations Jim McMahon for the expanding success of this book.
I am in currently in Newport,RI and the Juvenile Hearing Committee is interested in this book as well. Bless Jim and his family for creating this treat.

Book Description
Hoop Dreams meets Common Ground in this riveting portrait of a driven basketball coach at an iconic high school, and of his players, each struggling to rise above the many forces pulling them down.
Jack O'Brien, the impossibly demanding basketball coach at Charlestown High School in Boston, has led his team to five state championship titles in six years. Less talked about is O'Brien's other winning record: Nearly every one of the players who stuck with his program--poor kids growing up in high-crime neighborhoods and saddled with the lousy educational system available in urban America--managed to get to college. But O'Brien is no saint. Saints give without expecting anything in return. O'Brien needs his players and their problems as much as they need him.
Revolving around fascinating, complex characters, The Assist is a captivating narrative of a basketball team in pursuit of a championship that also drills down into the legacy of desegregation and explores issues of education, family, and race. O'Brien is a middle-aged white guy coaching an all-black team playing in an all-white neighborhood that three decades ago was at the center of the busing wars dividing cities across the country--a time and place indelibly described in J. Anthony Lukas's powerful book Common Ground. It's the inspiring story of a man who makes a difference, and of boys surmounting nearly impossible odds; it is also the story of the ones who don't make it, and why.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
Pretty ordinary execution of some NFL anecdotes. Bought for $1, so that didn't really matter.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for any Chicago Bears fan. A GREAT book!.......1999-02-20
This is a wonderful book written by Bears of every football era. I've read it many times over and will continue to do so. If you like the Chicago Bears, you will enjoy this book. I can't recommend it high enough. You hear from lots of the guys you'd expect, McMahon, Sayers, Ditka, Butkus, etc., but I also really enjoyed the players who were there in the Bears golden days of the 1940's, guys my dad told me about. And, Doug Buffone's recollection of the day Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes collapsed on the field and died shortly thereafter is haunting and chilling.
If I could, I'd give the book 6 stars!
