Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Straight Talk from the Expert.......2002-02-21

A terrific overview of the sometimes complex concepts surrounding a change in leadership or ownership of design firms. Lays out the options for a couple of different ways to transfer ownership/leadership and includes case studies that show how different options have been carried out. It's a solid book that talks directly to architects, interior designers and landscape architects. Recommended for anyone being considered for a future leadership role in a firm - and definitely for anyone or any firm getting ready for a transfer of ownership or leadership.

3 out of 5 stars Home and Garden Metal craft.......2007-02-01

The book explains some basic crafts with good detail. It did not fill my needs for metal working, but my wife loved the projects amd sent them out as Christmas gifts. The book detailed some attractive projects with instructions for the beginner.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Crafting!.......2003-02-20

I saw this book and picked it up imediately. It has lots of craft ideas that aren't too terribly hard to do. Many of them can be done in just hours and some look incredible. My favorite idea from the book was a wire garland with lights. Incredible in gold and makes an awesome addition to any party. Other good ideas were candle holders, vase, and plant sticks(some whimsical. Lots of pictures shown in each step as well as the layout of certain wire twisting and paper folding.

This is the English translation of the sought-after classic German blacksmithing book. In the early 1900s there was a rejection of Victorian style on the part of many creative blacksmiths. Led by Julius Schramm, some blacksmiths looked back to the ironwork of the Renaissance and the baroque periods. Franz Kuhn in Germany, and Francis Whitaker, in the United States both apprenticed with Schramm, and were strong influences in the rediscovery of the Renaissance. Samuel Yellin, in his large Philadelphia shop, also looked to earlier periods, and worked with the tools, techniques, and traditions of the Renaissance. Max Metzger saw the future of the blacksmith in this revival, and he supported the name "Artist-Blacksmith" to describe those doing creative work. Metzger said, "serious practice in freehand drawing is of basic importance" and asked that blacksmiths use the older traditions in original work. You will find his teachings and ideas on these techniques in this book.

16-page illustrated practical how-to guide by expert metalsmith, Gene Chapman. "In 2004 I began making candle cups out of type 'K' copper pipe which has a wall thickness of 1/16, double that of type 'M' pipe. The thicker candle cups are more attractive in my opinion and, when handled, have a nice feel to them. They are actually easier to forge and produce due to the thicker wall. 'Copper Candle Cups II' has detailed explanations of methods, techniques and tooling used to make candle cups out of the thicker wall type 'K' pipe. Note: The tooling for thicker wall type "K" pipe has different dimensions than those for type "M" pipe". - Gene Chapman, book's author. (See: 'Copper Candle Cups' also available through Amazon).

2 Books: 76 pages and 48 pages. Artist Blacksmithing is a creative process. It begins with an idea which then becomes a mental picture. This must then become a real picture, usually a free-hand drawing, detailed enough to let the beginning smith visualize his idea, determine its size, shape and proportions, and also realistic enough so the experienced smith can present it to his customer, and use it as a basis for a dimensioned shop drawing. These two books will help both apprentice and expert in a most important part of their work. "The pencil is as important a tool for the blacksmith as his hammer." - Jack Andrews. "Serious practice in freehand drawing is of basic importance." - Max Metzger. The drawings in these books appear to be three-dimensional; the objects look as though they could be picked up. The realistic effect is the result of simple shading techniques explained in detail in the text, and avoids the drawing of an engineer. The workbook assigns exercises that will require the blacksmith to do his homework: consider the historical style that is pertinent, be compatible with the surroundings, and meet the functional requirements. Answers to exercises are provided. Together the two books will be useful tools in the artist-blacksmith's shop. The author, Rudolf Baum, is head of the metalwork department at a state technical school in Hennef, Germany. He prepared these books to provide an introduction to descriptive drawing for both apprentices and advanced artist-blacksmiths.

                      4 out of 5 stars Nice Book.......2007-01-16

This is a nice book to add to your photography collection, but if you are starting out dont use this as a beginners guide. He goes into detail of which camera he uses, the lighting techniques, and why he poses the models the way he did. The models and the shots are nice, but if you are just starting out, dont try to use this as a guide.

                      5 out of 5 stars not bad.......2000-08-01

this book was ok, the women where amazing and each photo had a lot of information on the camera used and how it was takin. a book that is worth buying if your are seriously interested in commercial or model photography.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning photographic works by a talented artist.......2000-03-09

After purchasing several other books in the field of glamour and nude photography, I came across this book, Black and White Model Photography. Although I do not usually shoot in Black and White, the techniques are presented in such a way that easy to understand. The author covers a wide range of situations that allowed me to learn more about my photography. When I was stuck on a particular topic, I telephoned the author who was very helpful in describing what needed to be done. I also learned that he conducts seminars throughout the country, and I fully plan to attend one.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Book, But Don't Use It To Learn Photography.......2000-01-06

Although the title of this book suggests this would be a book to read to learn black and white model photography, it really is not. However, I still believe it is an excellent book to buy for a number of reasons, and well worth adding to your collection if your interest is in doing black and white photography of women, particularly nudes. First, the book has technical details of each image (film type, camera, lens, lighting, exposure, etc.) and that sort of information is very useful to a photographer who may be interested in, for example, how various brands of film compare. Secondly, there are some hints, which may prove useful. For the most part, these hints are excellent, but one has to be careful to evaulate each hint, as they are not all good in my opinion. Thirdly, the models are quite beautiful for the most part, making the book worthwhile for those who appriciate images of beautiful nude women.

Now, for the negative ... Although the women Bill Lemon has chosen as models are beautiful, the photography is a bit of a disappointment. In my opinion it is at the level of an advanced amateur. The author/photographer has found some image concepts that work, particularly the contrast of beautiful soft skin against rough wood, but that concept is repeated too much. The photos are not incredibly creative, and they tend to all look pretty similar. I do have to credit Bill Lemon for taking photos where the model looks beautiful, and I'm fairly sure the models who posed for him are quite happy with the photos he has taken. Most models, understandingly, care almost exclusively how they look in the photo, and are fairly indifferent to how creative or artistic the photo is.

I believe the positive aspects of this book far outweigh the negatives, and therefore reccomend it, provided the reader is aware of the above limitations and takes them into account.

5 out of 5 stars 'Black & White Model Photography' is a brilliant showcase.......1999-06-17

Walking in her bare feet she moved in front of the weather beaten wood door of the old barn. The photographer gave her some last minute direction as she turned her body. There was a slight breeze in the air, the early morning sun still low in the sky. The model was in harmony with her background, the light, the pose and the photographer. 'Click'. Bill Lemon's new book 'Black & White Model Photography' is a brilliant showcase of this Photographers unique style of glamour illustrations. Leafing through his book is like leafing through his portfolio with detailed technical data and 'how to' instruction on each image. His style and technique are unequaled and paired with some of the most beautiful models I have seen in years. The 60 B&W images in the book are all creative and well crafted. If I had any problems with this work, it was that I would have liked to had read a longer more detailed interview with Bill himself. What was included is the start of a fascinating study of the man behind the camera. A man that 'boot strapped' his way to the top by using his talent and developing a technique that makes his images as unique as his finger print. What discoveries were not answered in his interview were answered in his photography. Subjects like posing, natural light, film, lighting, composition, printing, finding models, clothing and model selection were all covered in the text of the images. His pictures are fresh, rich with detail and well conceived. The overall harmony of his work makes "Black & White Model Photography" a book to be seen, read and appreciated.

With her dying breath, she summons Dawn, the Goddess of the earth, of birth and rebirth, and protector of the witches. Lucifer, prince of lies, and Ahura-Mazda, master of Heaven, may try to bar her path with treachery and swords, but neither Heaven nor Hell is safe from Dawn's quest for answers - and for bloody vengeance.

The protagonist in Return of the Goddess is a girl. The book is also an examination of religion, as the girl is a neopagan, and comes into conflict with men of the usual patriarchal religion.

Dawn features a little more as a personality, I suppose you could say, working things out for herself while relating to the girl.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Graphic Novel..........2006-02-23

Ok I will admit that I picked up Dawn because of the girl on the cover while browsing the fantasy shelves at the bookstore one day. To paraphrase Jessica Rabbit - "She's not bad, she's just drawn that way..." Anyhow, I read the synopsis of the plot - a witch has to commit suicide to escape her captors, and in her last breath summons Dawn, the Goddess of witches - who by the way is not to be trifled with! The tale of Dawns rampage and revenge is very dark and disturbing, reminiscent of Frank Millers Sin City plotlines... Here Dawn must face off against Lucifer himself in an amazing battle.
Oh, and it doesn't hurt that the paintings in the art panels are fantastic. This guy can draw!

Anyhow, there is more to this book than the large breasted red-head on the cover, [but that never hurts a book!]and I would suggest picking up a copy if you are interested in paganism or would just enjoy a dark tale of retribution.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic myth starring comic's hottest: Dawn.......2005-04-06

This guy can paint, there's no question about that. Although all his heroes more or less look like an idealized self, the art is simply breathtaking. Some say it's close to kitsch - taste differs, is all I can say to that. The dark storyline, eternal fights between good and evil with angels and devils visiting earth surely isn't something for the average comic-fan. But if you're looking for something different and like to stare at welldrawn babes, Linsner is for you.

This is a book of primarily local and regional interest. For those who are unaware, Sterling McMurrin was a professor of philosophy at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City during the 50's, 60's, 70' and 80's. Sterling was considered one of the most scholarly and capable professors at the University and held a variety of important academic positions. In fact, during the John F. Kennedy Presidential administration, Sterling was United States Commissioner of Education (the position that was the forerunner of the cabinet level post, Secretary of Education).

Those who do not live in the Mormon culture in Utah may not be able to appreciate large segments of the book. Sterling describes his years teaching Mormon Seminary in the Church Educational System and his subsequent history in the church. The most fascinating part of the book for me was when Sterling ran afoul of church leaders Joseph Fielding Smith and Harold B. Lee for honestly informing them he did not believe in the most basic Mormon teachings. The subsequent story of him *almost* being brought to trial in a church court and being excommunicated is very interesting and entertaining. Apparently, than church President David O McKay personally intervened and prevented this from occurring. McMurrin met personally with McKay and the details of their conversation are highly interesting. It also furnishes an important insight as to why the LDS Church failed to open the priesthood to African Americans until 1978. (McKay favored doing it, but many people underneath him did not)

After finishing the book, I was proud. I am proud that the University of Utah had such a distinguished professor for so many years. I am proud that the Mormon culture of which I am a part is capable of producing free-thinkers and intellectuals like McMurrin. Sterling McMurrin died in 1996. However, he left behind a legacy of fearless intellectual freedom and inquiry that will long prevail at the University of Utah.

                      Book Description

Self-reflection by celebrities tends to be fraught with unmentionable difficulties. Not, though, when the star in question is the ever intelligent, self-aware, articulate, and magnificent Isabella Rossellini. For years, a wall in the entrance of Rossellini's apartment has been covered in pictures taken of her by different photographers. Looking at the "Me Wall," Rossellini writes that she never really saw herself; instead she "saw the photographer's work, their ideas, and our collaboration in capturing fantasies." Looking at Me gathers together Rossellini's private collection of portraits taken of herself by some of the world's leading photographers, including Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Michel Comte, Patrick Demarchelier, Fabrizio Ferri, Horst P. Horst, Brigitte Lacombe, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Robert Mapplethorpe, Steven Meisel, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Paolo Roversi, Ellen von Unwerth, and Bruce Weber, as well as filmmakers David Lynch and Wim Wenders. Rossellini invites us to join her as she looks at her favorite portraits, privileging us with her witty, humorous, and self-ironical comments. She traces her career, in photographs, from boxing reporter in Muhammad Ali's training camp to highly successful model, from actress in some of Hollywood's more controversial films to head of her own cosmetic line, Manifesto. Mixed in with these public images are pictures of Rossellini in private, with her children, her dog Macaroni, and her pig Spanky. Irresistibly charming, intelligent yet whimsical, Looking At Me proves the perfect complement to Rossellini herself.

This is a fabulous book, the type that you can sit with for hours and enjoy. It is reminiscent of Sante D'Orazio's first book, but on a much simpler scale. The photos are great, the commentary a little bare-bones but interesting. As a photographer, it's also interesting to see how different photographers have captured the same subject, sometimes more than once. Highly recommended and nicely published.

                              Book Description

                              By Robbyn J. Edmonds Ellender

Eric Dean Edmonds was born in North Carolina in November 1961 to Harry Lloyd Edmonds and Gloria Faye Madewell. He was unfortunately born into a family with a history of mental illness. Eric lost his mother at a very early age and with a father in the Air Force, Eric and his siblings were first raised by Aunt's and Uncle's in Virginia and Texas. Eric was later placed in the Methodist Home for Boys in Waco, Texas where he learned many daily living skills that proved to be very useful in his adult life.

Around the age of twelve, Eric was able to move out of the shelter of the boy's home and move to Virginia to live with his father who had since retired from the service.

Around the age of twenty, Eric was diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder, also known as Manic Depression. Placed on medication, Eric was like many, on and off again experimenting with "elf medicating" yet many times he recognized his need to seek medical help. During one of his self-medicating moments there was a terrible accident and Eric almost lost his life. He was hospitalized for over a month after slipping into a coma and after receiving the proper care and the loving support of all of his family, he eventually recovered.

Throughout the years, poetry had become sort of an escape and a way to express his feelings without having to face anyone; his self-controlled emotions. His poetry has changed over the years and Eric now realizes that with the proper controlled treatment and medications and with the love and support of his family, life is so much better.

With this, is the hope that these poems will help others perhaps understand the emotional ups and downs they themselves or perhaps a loved one who may suffer from the anguishing disabilities of Manic Depression.

Ever since a "dodgy" referee and a crackly transistor radio reduced his family to tears as they listened to the 1975 European Cup final, Rick Broadbent has been both blessed and cursed to be a Leeds United fan. Looking for Eric is the story of his quest to track down the legends of Elland Road and discover if they lived, breathed, ate, slept, loved, and hated Leeds just as he had—or was it merely a day job? In the course of his journey, Broadbent gathers first-hand accounts of the best and worst moments in the club's history, including the championship triumphs, cup shocks, and European controversies, as well as unearthing a plethora of stories and anecdotes. We hear Peter Lorimer's description of Don Revie's neuroses, learn the real reasons behind Gordon Strachan's departure, witness Tony Currie's battle with the bottle, and discover who had a bust-up with the legendary Pele.

                                Book Description

Inspired by the romantic Orientalists of the nineteenth century Eric Lawlor went to Turkey in search of exotic splendor: the fez; a luxurious massage; and the likes of Osman, a legendary knave and con man. What he found is a country in which he fez has been banned since the 1920s, the baths are as brutal as police interrogations, and rogues like Osman have given way to young professionals seeking Turkish entry into the European Economic Community.

But in the process of looking for Osman, Eric Lawlor has given us a book of splendid observation and delicious humor -- and a Turkey m which bazaars still hum amid the newness and Mohammed's footprints are still on display. As attuned to the eccentricities of his fellow Western travelers as he is to the oddities of his hosts, Eric Lawlor is a wonderful guide. And Looking for Osman is a pungent and poetic exploration of a country that surpasses all our notions of the exotic.

                                3 out of 5 stars Turkey Demystified.......2006-07-17

This is a very personal account of the author's travels around the different regions of Turkey. I think his introspections are interesting. And, he does make places like Ankara, Ephesus and Bodrum more intriguing without over-selling them. For an outsider, I think this book does very well in showing what one might encounter when travelling in Turkey. Although, it should not be deemed as a general description of how Turkey is really like. I like the tidbits of politics and history incorporated into the chapters. It made me learn some things about the country.

                                3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars for a Light Read.......2004-06-23

I have never been to Turkey, i may never go either. But, i found this book in my new home and decided to read it. I had no expectations. And it turned out to be a nice read. It's the kind of book you pick up and read when youre hitting the sack, or just lying around the house.

The author brings you through several different parts of Turkey and gives you a glimpse of what the culture is like. It is a very personal account of his trip through the country, and i always find things like that pretty interesting.

I recommend it, if you can find it for free, hidden away in a house youve just moved into.

                                2 out of 5 stars boring.......1999-06-01

As a foreign living in Turkey I can say that this book is one of the most boring ones dealing with Turkey. The writer makes a few mistakes in the book, he claims, for example, that Kurdish language is banned in Turkey. The book seems to be written in 1993. Kurdish wasn't banned then anymore. Yes, Kurdish language has been banned, but not during this decade and it is not banned anymore. In Istanbul Kurdish language study books are being sold at bookstores and one can hear Kurdish being spoken every day. For me, this was very surprising, totally the opposite what Western media says. Anyhow, the book also made a few stupid generalisations about Turkish women. The book was fairly naive and shows that the writer has a very scarce knowledge on any Meditarrenean culture. I must admit that I do not think that it reflects the reality of Turkey at all. It is totally from another planet than the Turkey I live in.

3 out of 5 stars An entertaining but sometimes harsh view of Turkey.......1998-09-02

Lawlor did a lot of research, and he writes well, but sometimes I found myself cringing at his behavior among the Turks, at his seeming lack of empathy, and at the snap judgments he occasionally makes about his host country and its people. I also got the impression that he did not spend all that much time there, not enough time to merit the authority to write a whole book. Still, some of the scrapes he gets himself into are edifying and funny. I sense that he means no ill will, and that the harshness I perceived was unintentional. Overall, for a more sensitive, richly researched portrait of Turkey today and yesterday, I recommend Mary Lee Settle's "Turkish Reflections."
