A quick introduction to a fascinating city.......2007-06-06
I brought this book along with me on my honeymoon to Paris and Barcelona and started reading it on our overnight train to Barcelona. I finished it in about four hours of reading, closing it just before getting in a cab to our Barcelona hotel.
Barcelona: The Great Enchantress is a page turner, especially if you are planning a trip there. In fact, if you are planning a trip there, this book is mandatory reading. It will pump you up for your visit like no tour guide can do. It doesn't contain a lot of in-depth advice for tourists or a careful history of Barcelona's rich architectural history (Hughes has another book for that, although I have not read it). What it does is whet your appetite.
Read this book and get excited about one of the most amazing cities in Europe! This is travel writing at its best and most engaging.
The heart of Catalonia........2007-05-22
A brief sample history of Barcelona and its effect on art, architecture, and the people. Hughes fell in love with this city and became a frequent visitor to the second largest city in Spain. Barcelona is indeed a famous city and one of the holdouts to the Franco regime in the Spanish CIvil War. Perhaps Hughes through his wording tried to convey his love of the city in his writings. However this book came across as a sketchy summary history of this great city.
This is an OK read on this great city. If you want more history, check out Hughes earlier book on this city.
An Abridged Version of "Barcelona".......2006-06-26
Which is not a bad thing, since the original 574-page version, written in 1992 just after the Barcelona Olympics, is too verbose. This version appears to have benefited from aggressive editing, deleting much of the generally irrelevant material on Barcelona's history and Catalan literature and art, which may generously be described as undistinguished.
Hughes' real strength lies in architectural criticism, and here he shines. Readers who share that interest may well want to buy the 1992 version which discusses that topic in depth.
Neither book, unfortunately, has a sufficient number of pictures.
There is an excellent VHS tape of Barcelona [ASIN: 6303209777] that combines both ground and aerial footage. Well worth purchasing.
A Barcelona Connoisseur.......2004-09-09
I read this delightful book on a plane to Barcelona. It whet my appetite for the cultural repast to come. Hughes gives a foretaste of the rich melange of language, history, art, and architecture that makes Barcelona and Catalonia so compelling. Though Hughes clearly loves this city, the writing is fresh and he mixes in sharp opinions so the book never cloys. Delectable.
A Quick Must Read.......2004-09-05
Hughes makes the buildings, history and pride of the Catalan people come alive. His use of Architecture tells a quick story of a strong and independant people, with Barcelona at it's center. His love of the city and people is evident in his story of his most recent wedding in Barcelona. The great thing about the book is that you want more, I'm happy he has a larger volume that covers the city and its eccletic history.

A more appropriate title for this book might be: "Wood-firing by Marc Lancet and Masakazu Kusakabe" as it is mainly about them. Although it is thorough and informative, I was disappointed to see the narrow spectrum of artists represented in it.
Great Book!!!.......2007-02-12
This book covers most everything I wanted to know about Japanese Wood-Fired Ceramics. The only area I wish it had was more pictures of finished pieces. Technique and building kilns it covered thoroughly.
Useful and for the advanced.......2007-01-12
I found this book a useful tool in thinking about the way I woodfire. If a person is not a woodfire potter or avid collector of woodfired work it may not be for you. The is definately not a casual read.
A Must for Wood-fire Enthusiasts.......2007-01-10
First saw this book at the wood-fire conference held in Flagstaff, AZ in Oct,2006. The coauthor Marc Lancet delivered an address that was drawn in large measure from the book. After Jack Troy's classic on wood-fire this book sets a new standard. The wide variety of wood-fire surface effects are connected to the japanese names for those effects and what causes them. The sections covering plans for wood-fire kilns is excellent.
Great Experience.......2006-06-24
The visuals are amazing,from the finished work to the building of a kiln. It was picticularly helpful in deciding on what pieces of art work to put into a firing. The information on the hard work and the gradifacation that inspirers woodfire, helped me perpar for being part of an astonishing process.

Janet Koplos provides an introductory essay for Teun Hocks, a gathering of photos by Hocks representing the first English-language volume devoted to the Dutch photographer's works. Full-page color images of untitled works display works which blend painting with photography and which present single scene stories often open to viewer interpretation. Bold colors, startling reflective themes and introspective art: you can't ask for more.

The G.I. Joe Battlefiles Index is kind of like those old Marvel Universe comics from the 1980's. Inside you'll find profiles of all the Joe Team and Cobra Members, as well as the various affiliates and splinter groups. The Joe listing begins with all of the current Joe Members and includes everything you could ever want to know about each character including real names (unless classified), how they joined the Joe team, their various skills and fields of expertise and much, much more. They are actually far more detailed than the Marvel Universe. It also includes deceased operatives and a history of how the Joe team was formed. The Cobra section is pretty much the same and includes a history of Cobra but they are broken down into groups such as Destro's forces, The Dreadnoks, etc...There is also a Cobra chain of command listing all of the various troop types such as the Crimson Guard, Tele-vipers, and so on.
But it's not just an index of personnel. One of the things many people love about the G.I. Joe comics is the weaponry and vehicles employed by Joe and Cobra and those are also spotlighted and include information on size, weight, speed, and armament. Great art accompanies the text by Many artists and it complements the work very well. This is a nice source book for anyone who is a fan of the G.I. Joe team and updated for the 21st century as well with current continuity. Great stuff!

Peter Thomson provides a detailed account of Brecht's own production in 1949 and then explores how the play has been transmitted--from Joan Littlewood's production in 1956 to the Royal National Theatre in 1995. Brecht's Alienation.......2000-08-03
The book is a good guide on tracing the evolution of the notion of alienation in theater. A different route from the naturalistic theater tradition, alienation aims at "extracting" emotions in theater and sticking with the message and aim of a play. Peter Thompson's work indirectly traces the idea of showing that acting is just plain "acting". He does this by reviewing the various experiences of staging Brecht's classic "Mother Courage and Her Children". For actors dreaming to just plainly "act" in theater (acting a character and not being a character), the good is a good guide. For those dreaming to be the mother in Mother Courage and The Mother, Shente in The Good Person of Setzuan, and St. Joan in St. Joan of the Stockyards--learn from this book.
