5 out of 5 stars Great Start.......2007-08-01

I found this book to contain a great wealth of information. I did not expect to find the meticulous details of every facet of land development, rather a good overview, and this book provides that. Anyone seriously interested in land development will need to do a great deal of additional study in technical publications and local state, county and city codes. This topic is so broad that I doubt any single book could cover all the issues involved. If you're looking for a primer and are prepared to dig deeper, this book is for you. If you're looking for a single comprehensive book on every detail of land development please let me know when you find it!

1 out of 5 stars A waste of money.......2006-05-25

Elementary discussion of land development. Lacks detail and interest.
the accompanying "checklists and forms" are not in a format that can be manipulated. Nothing is in Word as the description suggests, all in PDF format. Not useful at all.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here.......2005-01-24

Lets face it......if you know anything at all about developing land, the absolute critical item is actually finding a piece of property that makes sense to wast time pursuing. I bought this book hoping to find some insight into ways of "finding" that elusive "good fit" property that maybe I have not thought of. Nothing new here, just some odball potential sources of finding property that just waste your time

2 out of 5 stars Intro to development that could be half as long.......2003-08-15

A fairly useful overview that describes the issues a developer has to address, but not much about how to address them. For some reason the author tends to repeat himself. He says something and then restates it. He makes the same point twice.

He also tends to be rather vague: "Some aspects of site supervision can be dealt with in many ways. Some ways are more cost-effective than others." The book is full of statements like this.

I have found the book useful to help me identify issues that I need to think about, but if you are looking for answers--this book isn't for you. It should be titled, "What to Expect as a Land Developer."

4 out of 5 stars great start.......2003-08-12

Woodson doesn't tell the reader how to survey, do his/her own drawings, tell how to design a curb and gutter system. I didn't expect him to! He does walk you through how to get started on the path to be a land developer, including who and/or where to go for the details you will need to get further information, as well as the long list of subjects and details the potential developer needs to consider and explore.

    Book Description

There's something odd about Richard Kern's most recent photographs. They're so fresh.

These are not typical soft-porn photos of the look-at-me-so-young-and-sexy variety. From bondage to leather to latex to guns, Kern is known for incorporating all of the elements of fetish imagery into his photos. These days, though, his girls are less equipped. They also smile a lot.

Kern, long involved in the New York punk scene, has gained recognition not only for his photography but also for his underground short films of the 80s and 90s (in 1994 he also wrote and directed a video for the alternative rock group Marilyn Manson.)

This volume features Kern's recent work, a testament to the new phase in his photography. Saturated colors and bright atmospheric lighting accentuate his pretty-but-not-perfect young nude subjects. Still sticking with the "no airbrush" motto, Kern's unpretentious, honest photos draw the viewer in close; sometimes it almost feels like you're right there. Imperfections galore, these sophisticated snapshots show it like it really is. Fans of Kern's previous work will find this new direction refreshing.

4 out of 5 stars Snapshot as erotic art? Kern makes it work........2005-09-03

I like color photography. I also like monochrome photography. And I like naked females. A lot. There's plenty of truly artistic mono nude work, but with color it's almost always this snapshot-style stuff you see published nowadays and I don't like it much.

I don't have restrictions about what type nudes I like, if it's good, I like it all from simple non-sexual standing fine art images to gritty borderline porno. If it's good photography, it's good photography. This book of Richard Kern's is just perfect for what it is. Page after page, you don't know quite what's coming next, but somehow it's all in the groove. You really feel a connection with the models and you see them for who they really are, whether that's being photographed while sick in bed or while they are posing for the camera and getting a bit nasty, you sense a genuine connection with the photoartist (perhaps a literal connection, judging from a couple of the apparently post-sex images in the collection). Mr. Kern, with his simple snapshots, has captured and put together something in this book that just feels so ))) REAL (((.

The girls are great. None of them are great beauties (although the young brunette named "Alisa" is pretty darn close), but instead these seem like the "bad girls" you knew in high school that your mother didn't approve of but you loved to play with (or at least wanted to).

This isn't a book of fine art. But somehow it's much more than just naughty naked snaps. Richard Kern is something unique: he really can present the simple color snapshot as an art form and this book is certainly worth owning. The production quality is darn good for a softcover, but it's TASCHEN so I guess that's to be expected. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Richard Kern offers his own aesthetic.......2004-10-23

When I think of Kern I can't help but go back to the days of his super8 films. The hardcore collection was eons ahead of it's time, most still can't see beyond. Kern is transcendent in his work and this book is a brilliant 'no frills' example. It's as though the images ae bordering on self parody, there are some rather untypically attractive woman as well as the others which shows again Kern's fascination with the female body. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR PORN SHOP MASTURBATION MATERIAL YOU WILL BE ABOUT 30% HAPPY. However, if your new to his work, or even photography as art in general, this is not a world of digital hyper-bole. This is not easy on the eyes, but the more you look through, the more you will appreciae flourescent lighting. Kern is the exact opposite. Don't let my or anyone else's opinion influence you. Check out more samples yourself at www.richardkern.com. It ussually goes over the heads of the not so cerebral, but can easily be embraced by the most common lower degenerate types as well. Too many critics, too few doing anything about it.

    1 out of 5 stars Ordinariness illustrated.......2004-05-31

Check out this blurb on the back cover: "There exists an ordinariness in Kern's images that is disconcerting and that ultimately undermines any masturbatory potential or intent". The ordinariness is indeed perplexing. Masturbatory concerns aside, this book has no aesthetic potential or intent either. The pictures seem to be a random selection of cheap Web porn, ranging from the tedious to the vulgar. There are a few better ones, but nothing that you will not forget after turning the page. The book is badly designed and the printing quality is mediocre. You will not keep it in your hands for more than a couple of minutes or pick it from the bookshelf more than a couple of times.

4 out of 5 stars Happy and sexy photos........2003-06-15

Unlike many nude photos, these models often seemed to be having fun. From the front cover where two young babes are arm wrestling to the back cover where two girls are holding hands as they wave to someone, there are many happy yet sexy
    photos.

3 out of 5 stars The Fine Line between Art and Pornography.......2001-08-03

I bought this book without any predisposed notion of what it might contain. I read several reviews of Kern's work, which raised my curiosity level to the point where I arbitrarily decided to acquire one of his books. .... However,...there is a distinct quality to some of Kern's rather stark photographs that transcends anything that you would find at the adult bookstore. One can't help but admire the fact that he uses some very ordinary women as models who are shown in very ordinary contexts, blemishes and all. It's difficult to be "titillated" by what I consider to be Kern's frequently blunt approach to presenting the female body. While viewing the photographs in this book, there were times that I felt like I was receiving a visual biology lesson, while at other times I felt like a voyeur. In that regard, I suppose Kern has succeeded in challenging the viewer's pre-existing perceptions of the female body, and perhaps women in general. In a broader sense, it would appear to me that Kern challenges the definition of art, and blurs the border between it and pornography. Model Release is not a coffee table book, and it's not suitable for anybody who is even moderately immune to being offended. But with an unbiased attitude, the reader may be able to gain a better understanding of Kern's personal artistic vision.

    Book Description

Now for the first time in paperback, this classic provides a dramatic visual and written introduction to the land, people, culture, and history of Greece. Greece is a legendary destination, and anyone who has once fallen under its spell dreams of returning again and again. GREECE: Land of Light captures the essence of Greece-its striking sea and landscape, its people, its culture and history, and its ancient monuments. In the stark light of the Greek sun, colors become so pure and clear that they are almost audible. From the tip of the Peloponnese to the remote mountain villages of the far north to the islands of the Aegean, Brukoff's brilliant color images and Gage's evocative words delineate the heart of Greece. Included are the great classical ruins, Byzantine monasteries, colorful fishing villages, chairs at outdoor tavernas, octopus drying in the sun like laundry, and the ubiquitous cats-the vivid details that each traveler takes home as a memory. Gage's insightful essays on the turbulent history of Greece, its myths and beliefs, life in the villages, the age-old wisdom and spirit of the Greek people, and above all, 'Greece's unearthly, spiritual, almost holy light' are a passionate tribute to an extraordinary country.

1 out of 5 stars The boring journey..........2001-08-28

Like most people who would be interested in this book, I was expecting some insight into the life of the last tsar and his family, as seen by someone close to the family. But, as the title implies, it's his SPIRITUAL journey the book chronicles, with a few well-known anecdotes on the imperial family thrown in. If your looking for a book on the Romanovs or Imperial Russian history, don't buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Different View of Nicholas II and His Family.......2001-08-27

Although this book is one of many written about the tragic deaths of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, it is different than those which often appear explotive. Gibbes's relationship with the Tsar and his family provides us with a deeper insight into the family life, and the unshakable rich faith of this noble family. The book is one of a kind, and an "easy" read. As one who has read many books on the subject of Russian hsitory, I could not recommend it more highly.

2 out of 5 stars Not What the Title Implies.......2001-07-22

I bought this book expecting its majority to discuss the life of Charles Sydney Gibbes, but it's more of an ill-researched portrait of history twisted to fit the author's opnions. Although the first and last few pages are devoted entirely to Gibbes, the rest is about this mass conspiracy that lead up to the revoultion that rarely mentions Gibbes at all (at least a hundred pages do not even relate to his journey or him in any way). I prefer a favorable picture of the imperial family, but even I cannot believe these "facts" presented, espcially since Ms. Benagh doesn't even to refute other opinions; moreover, she seems to say the starving peasants could have lingered on for a few more days. She uses a maximum of eight sources to support her book, all published and most are famous first-hand sources written in the 20s-40s that have been prooven to have some major falacies. Do not believe its claims to be using new resources from the collapse of the Soviet Union because unsolved mysteries in here have been solved and thoroughly explianed in many other books. This book does a decent job as presenting Gibbes as an affable person but is primarily conncerned on trying to rewrite history. If you decide to purchase this book, I want to forewarn you to read a good Romanov or Russian history book beforehand to be able to identify An Englishman in the Court of the Tsar's faults.

5 out of 5 stars More than a spiritual journey; an intimate look at the Tsar.......2001-04-24

American author, Christine L. Benagh, has written a moving biographical and historical journey of an Englishman who went to Russia in 1901 to escape the disillusionment of his faith-shattering theological education. As Charles Sydney Gibbes' reputation as an English tutor in St. Petersburg grows, he comes to the attention of the royal family, whom he eventually serves for ten years until their tragic demise. Through Gibbes' letters and papers, we catch an intimate view of the Tsar, the Empress and their children in their home or on vacation, having tea, doing their studies, playing games and going to Russian Orthodox services. Their lives are placed into historical context with quotes from the biographies, letters and papers of people who knew them.

Sadly, Gibbes is among the first to investigate the fateful Ipatiev house in Ekatarinburg, where the Romanovs and their entourage were murderously slaughtered by the Bolsheviks. Due to his intimate knowledge of the Romanovs, as well as his command of the Russian language, Gibbes continues working in Russia for a time for the British High Command. He eventually ends up in Manchuria, working for the Chinese Maritime Service, during which time he adopts a teenaged Russian orphan and studies firsthand various Eastern religions.

At the age of 52, Gibbes decides to return to his Christian roots, but he is once more shattered by politics in the Anglican Church. After a much soul searching, he embraces the Orthodox Church, where, back in England, he is tonsured as a monk and then ordained into the priesthood.

As Father Nicholas Gibbes, he spends the remaining years of life devoted to the Orthodox faith in England, and to preserving the memory of the Romanov family with the many artifacts and relics he personally collected.

While this outstanding book is called a "spiritual journey," the spiritual journey is actually a pretty slender thread through these turbulent times until the last two chapters. It works as an interesting biography within this period of history, as an intimate portrait of the royal family, as a small slice of Russian (and English) history, and finally as a spiritual odyssey. I'd recommend this to those interested in the Romanovs, the Bolshevik Revolution, spiritual journeys or the Orthodox Church.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-04-04

If you would like a good, honest, brief explination of the events leading to the fall of the Romanovs, this is a great source. Nicholas II is one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented historical figures. Written from the perspective of Mr. Gibbes we have an insider's view of the events discribed. This book is well written, and presented in an interesting manner that keeps the reader turning the pages. Having read many books on the subject of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, I find this to be one of the better ones. Read this and Massie's "Nicholas and Alexandra" and you will have a good picture of what really happened. Thank you Chiristine for this excellent study!

                  Book Description

"Maybe it was fitting that the best young player in the game scored the goal in overtime. Everyone always talks about passing the torch. He caught it."--Wayne Gretzky, after his final game, about Jaromir Jagr

He's Gretzky's heir apparent, a formidable skater with powerful stick-handling skills. 28-year-old right-winger Jaromir Jagr--with an Olympic gold medal, two Stanley Cups, and three NHL scoring championships to his credit--has already shown the hockey world that he's the best. Young hockey fans will love hearing how Jagr came to dominate the sport: the trick he used to developed his strong stride (with no fancy equipment!); the earliest games he played; how he gained international fame, and the secrets of his success. Breathtaking photos capture this superstar in action.
