Book Description

Los Angeles and Southern California have always been a crucible for the experimental in residential design. Here then are the successors to Neutra and Schindler, Lautner and Gehry-architects who break out of the box to create houses that respond to the benign climate and varied topography of Southern California and express the needs and dreams of their clients. From serene white forms to bold expressions of structure, from houses that engage the landscape or ocean to those that turn confined lots to advantage, these are models of creative design. Behind every creative design is a successful architect-client relationship, and Webb gives a rare glimpse of the collaborative process of "designing a house." With some of the best houses built in the past decade, Brave New Houses should appeal to everyone who has thought of designing or owning a house that is one-of-a-kind.

3 out of 5 stars How "Brave" it is depends on the reader.......2005-04-19

Well... If you've just entered the design world of modern living, the content in this book might be dashing and "brave" to you. For most of the readers who are familiar with modern design concept (e.g., me), this book is not "brave" at all. Though it is a recently published book, I felt that it does not catch the pace of cutting-edge modern design simple because I could not get excited at all when viewing the pictures. Plus, this book focuses more on interior than architecture. You need to think about what you need from this book before getting a copy.

3 out of 5 stars A very nice book for leisure reading.......2005-01-13

A very nice book with great photos, however, the floor plans provided are very poor.

Judging from its title, one should know that it is not for most of people. Most of homebuilders work with many constrains, i.e., budge, topographic, dimension of the lots, and not to forget the resell value. Thus they do not have the luxury to orient the house wherever they like and build whatever they like. If one tries to look for practical ideas how to build a house, this book should be the last one to consider. However, I purchased it with full expectation that this was not a practical book, I am happy with what it is. Well, except the floor plans.

5 out of 5 stars good resource.......2004-06-06

Normally when I buy design books I buy for pictures that I use as ideas or reference at work. This book has nice quality photos of the homes at various angles as well as supporting text and floorplans. Being a picture person, I found myself reading and didn't want to put the book down. Lastly, this book is labeled as paperback but I received a hardcover, which I prefer anyways.

5 out of 5 stars Brave New Houses doesn't disappoint.......2004-03-20

Great book with very recent houses. I had seen many of them published in the Sunday LA Times magazine, as well as other places BUT this book provides additional pictures, along with floorplans, and text. The houses represent very current styles and range from small houses to large estates.

Very much worth purchasing.

PS. the book is paper back and approximately 9" x 9" in size

5 out of 5 stars Breaking out of the Box.......2004-01-02

It takes courage to leap into the unknown, but the thirty homeowners featured in this handsome new compilation picked architects who could translate their desires into something they could never have imagined by themselves. Rather than choose an off-the-shelf design, they went for something that was one-of-a-kind. That bold decision brought them lasting satisfaction.

Even if you do more than fantasize about your ideal home, you can learn something from this varied menu of houses. Each has a distinct character, but all open up to nature and conserve energy by pulling in natural light and breezes and blocking direct sun. As Michael Webb observes in his introduction, we spend too much of our lives in boxes--driving, working, and shopping--and we deserve something better to come home to. A new house, or an inventive remodel by a creative architect can revolutionize the way we live.

The thirty completed houses are located from Santa Barbara to San Diego, but most of them are in or around Los Angeles. That gives this book a coherence that is lacking from most anthologies of residential architecture, for each house relates to a similar climate and topography. As a bonus, there are five unrealized projects that show just how far you can break out of the box.

Aimed at professionals and dedicated amateurs, The Art of Faux is packed with gorgeous examples of faux finishes. Internationally acclaimed, award-winning decorative painter and instructor Pierre Finkelstein covers every aspect of the art form in tremendous detail, beginning with extensive specifics on all tools, materials, supplies, and planning, and including preparation and cleanup considerations. Each of the other 10 chapters concentrates on a wide variety of faux finishes in different categories: marble, semiprecious stone, limestone and sandstone, wood, patinas and textures, metals and gilding, tile, organic materials (such as ivory, leather, and mother-of-pearl), stenciling, and trompe l'oeil. There are even instructions for uncommon faux finishes, such as bamboo, Delft tile, snakeskin, and damask, that are not generally taught in other books on the subject. Every finish is presented as a complete recipe, and the list of ingredients includes not only paints, glazes, and tools, but also difficulty ratings and lists of preparatory exercises for techniques that are part of the complete finish. People seriously involved in any aspect of faux finishing--particularly people considering careers in the field--should invest in the information-packed The Art of Faux.

5 out of 5 stars Decorative Painted Finishes.......2007-02-06

Great resource book. Cool techniques...a bit intimidating for a beginner but full of information.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch presentation.......2006-08-11

This is not the next step for those who have been sponging and doing strié on the wall. This book outlines the top end of decorative finishing. These are difficult-to-master techniques and you should be a trained artist (realistic painter) before attempting much of what is described in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Very detailed, but not worth that much money........2006-06-15

I couldn't wait to get this one! It is very detailed. Teaches you step by step AND gives you the names of all colors used. The method to get to the end result is a bit tricky, the brushes he uses can get very expensive, and I think that there are other ways of getting the same result, without all the expensive brushes.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar! Stellar book! Stellar results!.......2006-02-23

This is a great book, and I highly recommend it. I have a few books on Faux finishing but they are no where near as complete, and with the others the results can be considered questionable, or shoddy compared to this one. The teachings in this book will astound you. Everything is pictured step by step. You will learn to achieve complete, and believable transformations. There are also some great examples pictured of finished interiors that will inspire you to create.
If your looking for a book on creating fantastic Faux finishes look no further - I assure you this is one to get.

4 out of 5 stars Practical advice from people who actually do it.......2000-05-11

Think this book is boring, cry me a freaking river losers. Making movies is not exciting, it's long hours and too soon deadlines and ego, ego, ego. This is how you do it. This is how The Blair Witch Project and dozens of other low/no budget videos are able to be made. I found the book to be priceless.

      2 out of 5 stars Bleh.......2000-02-28

This book is out of date, and the "famous director tales" are only a few pages in length each. Not worth the money. Would be interesting to see how this book would look if were written today, with the impact of DV.

      2 out of 5 stars Okay.......1998-10-03

This is not a fun book to read. It's like an old textbook in a community college. It's okay, and it's worth reading, but it's not worth the money. You won't gain 15 bucks of information in this book. If you want to know about independent filmmaking buy Rick Schmidt's Feautre Filmmaking at Used-car prices. This is well worth the read and the money.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellant.......1997-10-26

A general overview of the low budget filmmaking process loaded with pertinent information and technical advice. Areas of interest: starting your own production company and an appendix containing several sample contracts. Includes interviews with the likes of George A. Romero, Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi, Lizzie Borden, Tom Savini and Oliver Stone. It cries out for an update(its eight years old)but its an excellant exploration into the world of filmmaking nonetheless. Worth the dough.

      Book Description

"I have no pride. I tell anything," Jill Conner Browne is fond of saying. As Her Royal Highness, Boss Queen of the Sweet Potato Queens®, she has told legions of fans, known as "SPQ Wannabes," her delectable secrets to living, loving -- and eating -- like a queen. In her words, "More is more."

How much more? The #1 New York Times bestselling author of five works of nonfiction now serves up The Sweet Potato Queens' First Big-Ass Novel: Stuff We Didn't Actually Do, but Could Have, and May Yet. The humor in this uproarious coming-of-queen novel is more delicious than a favorite dessert (the Queens favor Chocolate Stuff™, of course).

In Jackson, Mississippi, Mary Bennett, Patsy, Gerald, and Jill are high school classmates whose daily routine is paced like a shuffle through the local red dirt -- until the arrival of a redheaded newcomer banishes monotony forever. With her luxurious mane and voluptuous figure, Tammy Myers aspires to join the silver-spooners, who make things happen in their lives. When Jill convinces Tammy and the others that money might buy a certain kind of good time and that true friendship has no price tag, the "Sweet Potato Queens" are born. "If it ain't fun, we ain't doin' it," runs their official club motto, and the Queens are true to their word.

Together, the Queens laugh out loud as they step down the long -- and not altogether pretty -- road toward making their very own queen dust, the sparkle that comes from livin' and lovin' their own lives. The Sweet Potato Queens' First Big-Ass Novel: Stuff We Didn't Actually Do, but Could Have, and May Yet reveals that the journey isn't always easy, but in the company of the Queens, you can sparkle, too.

      4 out of 5 stars A Light Summer Read.......2007-06-24

Although I didn't have any laugh-out-loud moments reading this book, I did experience a few chuckles and learned a new term for a bad boss - bosshole. Thankfully I don't currently have use for the term. It doesn't require following complicated story lines so it's a good summer book. The story of high school friendships weathering all the complications of life is close to my heart. It's a reminder that true friendships endure marriages, divorces, bad choices, distance, and in the end true friends are by your side.

Ladies - I recommend this book for all your girlfriends as a reminder of how important they are in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Summer Read!.......2007-06-01

I absolutly adore this book! A fantastic summer read!!! I passed this book along to 2 other girlfriends and they also loved it!

1 out of 5 stars Jill did not write this book!!.......2007-05-23

I live in Jackson, MS and I am a HUGE fan Of all Of JCB's books - laugh out loud funny - but I am convinced that Jill did not write this book. She has more talent and better taste than to have put out this drivel. It reads like a bad book report on the combination of all of her other books. I'm thinking that the author credit "by Jill Connor Browne with Karin Gillespie" means that Gillespie read all of Jill's previous books and did a very poor compilation of them. The flow is stilted, the story is juvenile and inconsistent and there is nothing new in it, just silly, warped regurgitations of Jill's original stuff. The foreword and the recipe sections were obviously written by Jill and delightful as usual but the rest was a waste of time and money. I'm extremely disappointed and frankly surprised that Jill would allow it to be published. Poor Willie Morris is probably rolling over..........

4 out of 5 stars Great ride with the Sweet Potato Queens.......2007-05-16

Misfits Jill, Mary Bennett, Patsy, Tammy, and Gerald band together to fend off the rejection of the popular crowd in high school. Eventually they evolve into the Sweet Potato Queens and they forge a group friendship which does not diminish through the years, even though they all go off in different directions. They suffer through broken promises, broken dreams, and broken relationships but are still there for each other. Their irreverant humor and undying loyalty to one another keep them sane during hard times. This book is full of southern-fried humor and charm and is bound to keep the reader smiling.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeter than sweet.......2007-05-16

This book will get you from the first page. It is funny and emotional. You won't want to stop listening once you start. The friendship the queens have is one that everone wishes to have with their friends. The receipes
shared at the end are a culinary delight. I tried a few of them and they were deliscious. I'm looking forward to
getting another book about their adventures.

                            Book Description

Cathy Lee Crosby is an internationally known and multitalented actress, writer, and producer--star of stage, film, and television. Six years ago, however, in spite of her success, four traumatic events left her world in chaos and despair: the death of her grandmother, contracting Epstein-Barr Syndrome, divorcing football star Joe Theisman and declaring bankruptcy after Joe sued her for half of everything.

Let the Magic Begin is the powerful, inspiring story of Cathy Lee's journey back in the realm of what she calls the Bliss Zone. In her totally entertaining, yet heartfelt account of how her life forced her out of the "march" of reality, and into that magical place we all knew as children where pure energy, creativity, and joy abound, and where "coincidences" open up a whole new world of possibility in each and every moment. With grace, humor, and courage, she re-ignites, step-by-step, the magnificence of who we really are.

Let the Magic Begin chronicles Cathy Lee's remarkable adventure back into the "magic" of her life, and her story will passionately compel readers to begin living lives filled with what they had only thought were in their dreams.

3 out of 5 stars trite spirituality from the "Where is she now?" file.......2001-07-09

This book is mainly interesting to those who wonder "Whatever became of that star from TV's That's Incredible?" As this autobiography (of sorts) indicates, she hit rock bottom. Bankruptcy, sued by her former lover, career going nowhere.

She then tells us how she recovered through discovering a "spiritual path." Talked to shamans and such. Began eating health food from Trader Joe's. She includes recommended food at the back of the book, including brand names.

She drops lots of celebrity names to let us know how "connected" she is to Hollywood. She dishes no dirt on anyone. Nothing juicy in this book. This is no "tell all," but rather her calling card to get back in the business.

I was a fan of That's Incredible, so I bought the book. Reading it, I ended liking her more, and respecting her less. She seems a nice person, but real flakey. Typical Hollywood personality.

If you enjoyed That's Incredible, and wonder whatever became of its star, you may enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Begins With Perception...........2000-01-07

It's been awhile since I've read Cathy Lee Crosby's book, but when I finished it I recommended it to friends "in need" and they loved it, too. I want to recommend it to you.

I've rated "Let the Magic Begin" with five stars because it is an inspiring story of a woman on a magical journey...if I had not believed that the events had happened as magically as they seemed to, perhaps I would have rated it lower, but I have seen the power of "coincidence" in my own life enough to know that there is no such thing! As Cathy clearly points out in the course of her story, perception is the key to the magic of life. First you must believe to make the magic work!

Read this book if you feel there is something undefinable missing in your life. Read it if you want to stop making the same mistakes over and over again. Absolutely read it if you feel you have an insurmountable problem. Read it if you'd like to become a healthier person...read it if you like people.... But most importantly, when you read it, Believe, and the believing will make it so.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read -- Deep Work.......1998-10-05

Cathy Lee's book is beautifully written. Her journey takes every popular "how-to" book in my library at least one step further, farther, faster. I have been buying copies for everyone I know who's forgotten how to have fun!

                            5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......1997-03-26

Cathy Lee's magical journey is an inspiration to all of us. Thak you for sharing your experience with all the other dreamers of the world. Reba McEntir

5 out of 5 stars Help at last........1997-03-23

I've been a suffering Bi-polar most of my adult life and have just come through a five year depressive period. A friend told me about this book and in five weeks I see more and know more about where I'm going and how to get there for the first time in years...if not ever. I love you Cathy Lee for putting down, for us all to read, a way back to the future. Charlie Reinmille

5 out of 5 stars The best description of Southern society and culture........2003-06-06

John Faulkner succeeded capturing the South better than any author I have read. I grew up near his location and in a family with the same moral and cultural values of his. His family could have been mine. If you want to travel to the South that used to be, that our families helped build after the Civil War and before Korea this is the best way I know to do it. His frugal use of words and his short sentences only add to the authenticity of his descriptions. For those of us from there he brings to life,as none other, what used to be and is to never be again.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, you don't know Faulkner until you've read this book.......2000-03-20

A wonderful stylist, John tells the intimate story of the Faulkner family that no biographer or academic could. You simply don't know Faulkner until you've read this book.
