Great SIPs Primer.......2007-08-23
Excellent overview of SIPs construction basics and techniques. Author explains in ordinary terms so any layman can understand. Anyone considering SIPs construction should buy this book. It would be nice if a newer version (this one is 2002)were available to discuss the latest products.
Arguing for the Technology.......2007-01-13
Good book to explain the fundamentals and ideas behind why Structural Insulated Panels area a good building medium. Unfortunately, the solid information on estimating the costs or tricks to design that the interested party are looking for are not there.
I look for someone to write the next book in the series.
an excellent source for hard to find information.......2006-06-18
this book provides a thorough and well detailed look at SIP anatomy and construction techniques. information on this construction type is extremely difficult to find from sources other than (possibly biased or glossed-over) information from SIP manufacturers. the content covers so many details of its construction that it could concievably be used as a primer/manual/textbook for contractors or others interested in using this construction type. any information needed to supplement the information found here will most likely be so specific that it will be material related to a particular manufacturer's product or information gleaned directly from materials testing reports. i have looked extensively, and not been able to find, any materials on SIPs that could compare to the value of this source.
Excellent Starting Point for Learning about SIPS.......2005-09-21
Just a quick note on this book. My wife and I are looking to build an energy-efficient home. We are both engineers and very detail-oriented people. As part of our due diligence, we picked up this book after seeing a demonstration house built with SIPS as part of the 2005 Smithsonian Folk Life Festival (this was part of the US Forest Service pavilion - sustainable building approaches area). As noted in an earlier review, this book does have a bit of a promotional feel. However, it could simply be the author's enthusiasm for what appears to be a very good product. The book is also somewhat light in treating potential problems with SIPS. The failures of mutliple SIP roofing systems in Juneau, Alaska should have been addressed. In fairness though, these failures seem to largely be installation problems on the part of a small number of builders unfamiliar with the product. Overall, this book is a very useful and fairly detailed introduction to SIPS building. We would love to see a follow-up title that goes into much more technical detail on designing for SIPs use, as well as further exploration of lessons-learned from using SIPs in various settings and climates.
Answered my questions.......2004-05-25
I have been considering building a home on a piece of property I own for the better part of a year now. I'm a fan of SIPs due to energy efficiency and the perception I have of their ability to withstand the harsh climate of south Texas. It helps that the best home I've ever owned (and I've owned more than ten) was a panelized home but on a wood foundation that I purchased in Minnesota 15 years ago. The house was solid, energy efficient and better built than anything any of the many site built stick homes I owned before and since.
I've tracked down a variety of sources of information on SIPS including most information readily available on the web. This book has been an essential tool for me, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone considering building with SIPs. It addresses all of the common objections and misperceptions (and there are many), and it does so in a methodical and comprehensive manner. I can see where some folks might consider that to be promotional, but I believe there is still a stigma to panelized construction, at least in the minds of a large segment of the population, so perhaps it's appropriate that a little promotion or cheerleading is included. It also addresses a number of practical considerations you'll have when building, such as electrical, plumbing and hvac considerations. It's not a manual, but I wasn't looking for a manual. After reading it, I feel that I will be better able to find and work with a builder and accomplish my goal...to build a quality, affordable house that is structurally superior, energy efficient and will last the rest of my life. Most importantly, I have yet to find another source on the subject that provides so much information with so little effort. As a result, it gets five stars.

I have found the book to be quite useful. The information is not up to the second, but it is a great starting point and reference.

Excellent Reference Material.......2007-07-16
This is an amazing reference book if you're a tattooist. I know the slant of the book comes from law enforcement background, but if you're a tattooist this book is great for a little history lesson in gang tattoos as well as explaining some of the symbols that are commonly used. A fascinating read and an amazing window into prison life.
Highly Disappointed.......2007-05-27
The concept behind this book is good enough, but unfortunately, not only is the writing mediocre, but the drawings are subpar and the drive of the book seems to be towards informing frightened people who want to know who, of the people around them, are "gang members" or "dangerous." What's unfortunate is that, for example, dragons and tigers are outlined as "gang" tattoos for Asians with dangerous lifestyles, which, while that is relevant, it is problematic because it is not pointed out that not *all* Asians with those as tattoos are dangerous. I imagine that anyone who is reading this to "identify gangbangers on the street" around them, aside from, say, security guards or similar individuals, will give into fear and judge those around them with tattoos because of what they read in this book. But as I said. The writing has errors in it, such as the constant misspellings of Teotihuacán, and gems like saying that Asians get tattoos of dragons and tigers because those animals are native to Asia. (Tigers, maybe. Dragons? Better wording is in order.)
In sum, I have read much better books on the topic and not only because they contained better data, but because they were written and/or illustrated more professionally.

The quality of the information on current tattoos was excellent, and worth the investment. You can't tell the street gang players without knowing their tattoos; this book will give you what you need to not only get started...it will become a 'go to' book in your library.

This book was very interesting. But...simply put, not enough photos. Many of the photos included don't show any tattoos at all. Random elderly people and prisoners, jail cells, signs, etc. If you're wanting to understand the prison culture and politics, it would be wonderful!! If you're looking for an interesting photobook of people's tattoos, this is not the one to pick.
Excellent resource.......2007-01-03
For those passionate about Russian prison culture, this is the book for you. This book provides an excellent resource for the meaning behind Russian prison tattoos and it provides valuable information on contemporary Russian prisons...which don't seem to have changed much since the end of the Gulag system. The author attempts to show as many different tattoos as possible, but it does feel repetitive. What helps is the author providing information about Russian prison culture; this brings context and a story behind the tattoos.

this is an excellent book about russian prison tattoos. it has a lot of clear pictures. it also has quite informative text from good research done by the author. i reccommend this book to anyone interested in tattooing in foreign cultures and countries.

The book is alright they break it down to politics, being a Russian who came here when I was ten, I realize that the American jails and federal prisons aren't so bad, except cook county jail and tent city in Arizona, lots of info, big photos, but to get the whole perspective, who the bitch is, and who swallows sperm , you would need to complement yourself with the second book called Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia. The books go together.
A world rarely seen.... .......2005-04-18
Fascinating anthropological, photo-journal examination of the symbolism and code representations of Russian prison tattoos. An explicit, brutal look at a world most Russians and indeed most Westerners will never see. For an American audience, the importance of tattoo symbolism may be somewhat lost. After all, we live in a world where over privileged frat boys and corporate conformists are now "inked" with designs once almost exclusively earned by members of our own working or "criminal" classes.
Overall a fascinating read, even if the brevity of the text leaves something to be desired.

Chicano poets Jimmy Santiago Baca, Jason now conducts poetry

Tattoos have a distinct anti-authority appeal. The origin of this appeal might be traced to the early Christian proscription of tattooing and the resulting European laws against the practice. Whatever the source, tattooing today has an aura of the forbidden about it. Second, tattooing may have inherent appeal due to the pain involved in the operation and the permanency of the design; thus tattooing is restricted to the brave and the dedicated. Third, and most important: in some circumstances, people are deprived of the opportunity to acquire and display the ordinary means of identifying and presenting the self. Not Worth The Money But Lots Of Pictures.......2005-02-15
I purchased "Prison Tattoos" to study gangs and their tattoos. Being interested in law enforcement and part owner of a tattoo shop this book caught my eye. The intro is about 8 pages followed by 60-70 pages of pictures some fuzzy and crude. The post script is one more page. Lots and lots of pictures of work. But at about a dollar a page of writing, this is a mighty expensive book with little information. Good buy if found of the sale rack or used.
Interesting commentary and tattoos, mean looking guys........1999-06-28
I picked up Prison Tattoos at a college bookstore because it was on sale. It included temporary tattoos made from some of the convicts' designs, which was also novel.
I mainly enjoyed the introduction and conclusion of the book, discussing prison and tattooing, the reasons, the methods, the meanings, everything. It included a discussion of the penal system's dislike of tattooing in prison facilities.
The images were striking, but they were mostly of full bodies and torsos, so the actual tattoos were hard to see any detail in. Also, being a showcase of prison work, there were few pieces that looked particularly good. However, as a gallery of the genre, it got the point across.
I am glad I purchased this book, as I found it interesting, but it was not the valuable guide that I had hoped that it would be.

Why do fools fall in love?.......2005-10-06
Never before had I read the trials and tribulations of love in the way Cathy Guisewite described it in the introduction of this little book. Because of Dad's love for his daughter and the later reinforcement of the fairy tales we read as children, we as women are programed to find love. Social changes and circumstances, however, have disappointed us. It's disconcerting to find out that there are so many losers out there and you have to search far and wide amongst the frogs for that elusive prince on a white horse. But we never give up, because love is always worth another shot. We have hope, if nothing else.
