Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-03-15

It is a well thought out and researched book, beginning with a significant amount of history about Bungalows and their Craftsman cousins. From a historical perspective it is definitely worth the read, and contains many source images of homes from this era highlighting the different color choices and how they changed over time. I learned that dark window sash paint was prevalent until the 1920's, when it shifted to white (paving the way for ubiquitous white vinyl!).

It then goes into the process of picking colors, including very helpful suggestions to work with various roof colors, period and real world examples, as well as specific details such as porches, steps and eaves. The book also has a short technical section on colors, very helpful to educate husbands in how to articulate thoughts about colors.

My only real peeves with the book is the lack of references past 1930, and the lack of any Spanish styles, save the cover of the book. My house is (obvious by my peeves) a 1938 Spanish style bungalow. Even without a plethora of period examples for my specific need it helped me decide where I wanted to go with my house, and how to draw focus without detracting from the whole.

Very useful for building my new bungalow home.......2007-03-10

I was skeptical about this book after reading other reviews. However, I was very pleasantly surprised how useful two particular sections of this book were for me. The "Developing Your Own Color Scheme" section takes you through decisions for each part of your exterior. Not only is there the body of the house to decide a color for, but there are the trim and accent colors, the window sash, the roofing materials, and the foundation. In order for a color scheme to work and show off your bungalow's best features, all of these elements need to work together. The other section I liked is "Before And After," which shows how actual homes were improved by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain elements of their exteriors. I even chose my own colors from one of the alternate color schemes the author suggests. Warning -- the color swatches printed in the book look nothing like the real Sherwin-Williams colors of the same name. If you see a color you like, take the book with you and find a similar color at the paint store.

OK, but disappointing photos/examples.......2007-01-15

As a Craftsman bungalow owner, I was eager to turn to this book for some direction in returning my home's exterior to its period. While there is a good attempt to address some of the questions of color, many of the photos are so poor (harshly contrasting sunlight, faded or inaccurate colors, etc.) that the "actual" examples are very disappointing. Further, the best photographed examples are from large A&C homes, not Craftsman, and not "bungalows," as the title implies. However, the color examples provided in the book (in "chip" form, rather than from photos) were helpful. In all, I got something from this book, but not as much as I'd hoped.

Picking colors for exterior paint.......2006-11-03

This is a wll researched book. I wanted to use it to help me pick colors for my house. The book features sherwin williams, not the paint I used. It did give my ideas on how to paint the trim in an original way, but did not really help me pick out distinct colors. Most of the colors used in their makeovers were light. I wanted to see more darker colors for the house body.

Islamic glassmakers were not only brilliant technicians and innovators in their own right, but they also preserved many of the methods of Late Antique Roman craftsmen, passing them on centuries later to Venetian and other European masters. This lovely book is the first comprehensive study of the accomplishments of these artisans. The volume presents glass objects from collections throughout the world—from perfume flasks to pitchers, mosque lanterns to boxes, inkwells to vases—ranging from the seventh to the nineteenth century and through many of the major artistic centers of the Muslim world.

Five introductory essays cover all facets of the subject, including historical background, archaeological excavations, issues of connoisseurship, technology, and science. The authors then discuss 150 masterworks of Islamic glass, grouped by technique or type of decoration (blown, mold-blown, hot-worked, mosaic, painted, cut, and engraved), each of which is illustrated in full color. Examples of European glass objects are also included as illuminating reference points.

The book is the catalogue of an exhibition that opens at the Corning Museum of Glass in May 2001 and at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in October 2001.

it's a glassic.......2006-06-16

Sometimes I read books that are totally out of my area of competence and general knowledge. I often wind up learning a lot, but fear that the knowledge I thus gain will be forgotten soon because it doesn't connect with anything in my daily life---books about amber forests millions of years ago, the French horn, or Chinatown gang wars come to mind. Still, I think it's good to stretch yourself, try to stick your nose in new fields. This is such a book for me. It's basically a beautifully illustrated catalogue for an exhibition held in 2001-2002 at Corning, NY, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, and in Athens. 157 color photos stud the pages accompanied by descriptions of each object in great detail. The authors have included a number of short chapters on glass production in the Islamic world, archeological excavations of glass, (it's hard to determine if buried glass comes from a local maker or was imported), on who used glass and where they got it from, and some very professional chapters on glass making, chemistry, and decoration techniques. You will pick up a lot of glass-lingo, and possibly learn plenty about the spread of techniques throughout the Muslim empires from the 8th century to the 15th ---mold-blown glass, free-blown, hot-worked, slices of mosaic glass, impressed, scratched, tooled, etc. The early Islamic glass makers preserved or expanded upon techniques developed in the Roman or Byzantine periods. Their work has been found as far away as Japan, northern China, and Scandinavia. Muslim glass craft reached new heights in some cases, but after the 1400s, production declined in the area that stretched from Istanbul and Egypt through the Middle East and Iran to India. The rulers began to rely on supplies from Europe, particularly Venice. On the other hand, glass makers in Europe produced many items which copied Muslim styles. In India, glassmakers still kept producing a large number of items for Muslim courts in the 18th and 19th centuries. The title of the book is possibly misleading. I thought it was going to be about Turkey or the glass found in Turkish museums, but no, the focus is on all parts of the Muslim world. Everyone can enjoy the beauty of the rare glass objects presented here. Even if the text is more for specialists a very good attempt is made to explain everything to the layman or, as in my case, the completely ignorant. This could be the glassical text on the subject.

Debbie Farmer's Life in the Fast Food Lane had me laughing out loud so often. As the mother of four kids, not to mention the occasional goldfish, semi-permanent turtle and seemingly permanent hamster, I really appreciate Debbie's self-deprecating, yet never sarcastic, look at family life. Her take on bathing suits and homemade cleaning solutions had me laughing so hard I cried! Finally, as a humor writer myself, I'm a tough audience to please, and Debbie is first-rate.

This book is a great tribute to 75 years of Blackhawk history. Bob Verdi does an excellent job and the photos are excellent. I would recommend this book to all hockey fans. This book would make a great Christmas gift.

This is a great book, filled with many facts (even though everyone mentioned in it is gone from the team)

If you're a Canucks fan, this book is a must have!.......1998-04-18

Even though three of the guys pictured on the cover aren't even on the Canucks anymore (Trevor Linden, Cliff Ronning, Kirk Mclean) and the other is probably on his way out (Pavel Bure) it is still worth the cost. It has tons of pictures and facts about the Canucks including coverage of their '82 and '94 Stanley Cup runs. If you're a Canucks fan, you'll absolutely LOVE this book. This book makes great reading or reminiscing.

This book is perfect. It must of taken a great deal of research to put this book together. The captions are short but very informatve drawing attention to the sensational pictures of the Dusters,Barons,Whalers,Rangers,B.C.Icemen and Senators.I recommend this book to anyone young or old that is interested in hockey.

The only things you'll get out of this book that you may not find easily on the internet are the pictures.

Also, I was disappointed that the author was not a Cornellian.

You can finish this book in one sitting and not because it's well written or particularly interesting. If you extract just the words from this book it will not fill a pamphlet.

Must read for the Lynah Faithful.......2006-01-30

This book is a pleasant summary history of Cornell Big Red Hockey. There is a chapter for each of the six head coaches of the last sixty years, a chapter about hockey on Beebe Lake, and a final chapter on the Lynah Rink experience.

The book is missing two things: color pictures and a summary of team year-to-year results. Lynah Rink has banners honoring the NCAA championships, NCAA appearances, ECAC championships, and Ivy League championships. I would like to see that summary in the final pages of the book.

The "New York Rangers-Seventy-Five Years", is a superb historical look back at 75 years of Ranger hockey. Author John Halligan, who is a former public relations director for the Rangers, gives the fan, a fantastic look back at the birth of this great franchise, and takes you on a journey from 1926 to the year 2000. All the legends of Ranger hockey are presented in all their glory. Names like the Bill and Bun Cook, Lester Patrick, Ching Johnson, Murray Murdoch, Chuck Rayner, Gump Worsley, Andy Bathgate, Harry Howell, Rod Gilbert, Jean Ratelle, Vic Hadfield, Eddie Giacomin, Brad Park, Adam Graves, Mark Messier, Brian Leetch and Mike Richter are just a few of the Ranger legends that are brought to life with rare photo's and text that help make this book the best book ever published on the New York Rangers. The all-time Ranger team fold out section by John Davidson is a very nice touch to this oversized coffee table book. Seeing the full page photo of Eddie Giacomin overcome by emotion playing for the Red Wings, as the crowd chanted his name for 2 hours surely brought back memories of an event that will live forever in Ranger history. All four stanley cup teams are covered here, 1927, 1933,1940 and of course 1994. The book has lots of statistical data at end section of the book to help settle any arguments over who had more goals and shutouts etc. I can't think of a better gift to give to a young Ranger fan who would like to explore the history and players who wore the uniform of the New York Rangers.

I am an avid birder and own all the recognised field guides to birding in the Southern African region. I have used them all extensively and am convinced that the Illustrated Guide To the Birds Of Southern Africa stands head and shoulders above its rivals. I say this for the following reasons:-The combined knowledge of its authors cannot be matched as these are the Guru's of birding in the region with Ian Sinclair undoubtedly the most travelled,most experienced and most knowledgable expert of the lot.His co-authors not being far behind!The quality and accuracy of the distribution maps are, I believe, where the field guide steals a march over other similar guides.The quality of the illustrations which show all the major plumage variations as well as flight patterns makes this an invaluable guide to experienced and novice birders alike.There is currently simply no better book on the market than this one.
