In 1930 the Olmsted Brothers and Harland Bartholomew & Associates submitted a report, "Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches for the Los Angeles Region," to the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. After a day or two of coverage in the newspapers, the report dropped from sight. The plan set out a system of parks and parkways, children's playgrounds, and public beaches. It is a model of ambitious, intelligent, sensitive planningcommissioned at a time when land was available, if only the city planners had had the fortitude and vision to act on its recommendations.
"Parks, Playgrounds, and Beaches" has become a highly valued but difficult-to-find document. In this book, Greg Hise and William Deverell examine the reasons it was called for, analyze why it failed, and open a discussion about the future of urban public space. In addition to their introduction and a facsimile reproduction of the report, Eden by Design includes a dialogue between Hise, Deverell, and widely admired landscape architect Laurie Olin that illuminates the significance of the Olmsted-Bartholomew report and situates it in the history of American landscape planning.

Remarkable Foresight.......2002-07-11
It's true that the maps are often too small and would be better in color, as the originals are. However, the reprints are far from illegible, and the text of the Olmsted-Bartholomew proposal is captivating in and of itself.
I was fascinated to read the astute predictions of these men of vision, and their thoughtful proposals for increasing the quality of life for Angelenos. I remarked at the urgency of their recommendations; they seem to genuinely fear the social consequences of allowing a city to grow with inadequate space reserved for recreation and natural beauty.
If only we could know what L.A. would have been if the plan had been adopted!
Reprinted maps are dark, and hard to read........2000-05-26
This reprint of "The 1930 Olmsted-Bartholemew Plan for the Los Angeles Region" is more exactly a low-quality copy. The maps are so dark they are very difficult to read, and the way they are bound into the book, much of the details are lost into the seams. The original maps were color, so any references to colors in the legends are lost, and the gray scales blended together make the maps even less articulate. It's important that a document such as this is reprinted for all to see, but it seems as if this volume has missed an opportunity of becoming a library keepsake.

Good but not as good if you expect advanced staff, and not so advanced.......2007-01-13
It is very basic. I think many people may figure out what to do with their paint pro with included manual. Author should have instructed more on layering and masking with more complicated pictures. I would advice anyone who bought this book also buy Ken McMahon book on a subject. Oh, how much money we as a customer spend on those self-help books. And the thing is we find only one or two brilliant ideas in them. So, buy all books on subject.
I learned a lot and I already thought I knew a lot........2006-02-24
I got this and Ken McMahon's (and Robin Nichols) book at the same time. I initially thought I was going to like the other book more, but this one became ever-so-slightly the preferred of the two. It's not perfect and I still struggle with layers/masks sometimes, but there are a lot of good tips and tools in this book. I certainly felt like I learned some things, and I considered myself well above average, not quite a power-user, but close before reading it.

I really do not understand all the 5 star rating for this book. It is not bad, but it is much more of an overview then a detailed explanation of improving photos with PSP. I guess the title (and the reviews) had me expecting more from this book, but every topic is just generaly covered with not near enough real world improve your photos informaton. It is basically a glorified user-manual and the photograpger's guide in the title is very misleading, im my opinion. I would not recommend this book unless you do not already understand the basics of PSP and how to use the interface. Don't expect many tips if you are a real working photographer.
Great Book.......2005-09-23
Being slighty familar with an older version of Paint Shop I still order Dummies and Paint Shop Pro 9 Photographers Guide.
I was not disappointed. Dummies gets you started but the real meat of Paint Shop Pro is in the Photographers Guide. It is one thing to be able to figure out how to do something, but there a so many things in Paint Shop Pro 9 that most people don't even know that they are there. This book will show you them and how to use them. A lot of nice ideas also. If you fully want to use PSP buy this book

I have been looking for a book that would tell me exactly what each tool would do for PSP 9, and this is the ONLY one I could find. Thank goodness it is good! It covers photographs, which is what I deal with creating graphics. And it appears to apply to the new version of Paint Shop Pro that Corel just published. Good investment!

Not 100% comprehensive, and spent more time than I would have liked on basic procedures, and less time on layers and masking. But still, I learned a lot from the book and it was certainly a valuable tool in helping me get the most from Paint Shop Pro.
Some Good Material, but Several Annoyances.......2005-10-02
At first glance this is an attractive book, with a high standard of graphic design and a profusion of color illustrations. Working with it unfortunately reveals a number of annoyances. First, the organization is chaotic, with topics showing up in unexpected places. Among many examples, Chapter 1 purports to introduce PSP's features, but includes redundant and superficial sections on choosing a digital camera and computer. Chapter 3 deals with basic picture manipulation, but leaps into a discussion of scripting (which probably deserves a separate chapter). The various levels of chapter subheadings use very similar type, so it's hard to discern the structure of the book. Some topics are covered in the main body of the text, but others are only found in separate "step-by-step projects", which seem to be an attempt at exercises for the reader. Another complaint is the huge number of screen shots that are simply too small to read. And the before and after examples of image adjustments are so small that it is often impossible to see the differences. The book covers a lot of material that is obvious simply by looking at PSP's user interface, yet some important topics get short shrift. For example, the issue of color management. I couldn't find an answer to the common workflow question: "What is the best sequence to apply the many functions provided by PSP?" The authors are obviously qualified to provide some insights here. There is some good material in the book, but with some attention to organization and space priorities, it could have been much better.
Excellent Companion to Koers' Book.......2005-08-06
Previously, I had purchased Diane Koers' "Paint Shop Pro 9: Photographers' Guide" from Amazon. It is an excellent book, and I highly recommend it. Over time, however, I found some gaps in Koers' book and so I purchased McMahon's book. Now, I find I refer to McMahon's book more than Koers.
McMahon does a better job of explaining PSP9's toolbars and basic workings. He also gives valuable insights into the digital darkroom while he discusses PSP9's functions. Like Koers, he uses excellent examples and sample photos to illustrate his points. The print quality is outstanding (the book was printed in Italy and, as with all Elsevier publications, the offset process is exemplary) and enhance the lessons.
For the aspiring photographer who wants to master digital darkroom techniques using PSP9, I recommend the following books:

As a traveler, I had always been frustrated at “having to eat and run” when visiting fascinating places. Being able to live, teach, and travel, and really get to know people was like a dream come true when my husband and I spent a year in China. Although fascinating, it was not an easy year. Coping with the lack of heat, of familiar foods, political monitors in the classroom, and few teaching materials sometimes made teaching a nightmare. It was the first time in my life I had ever written “Spitting in the classroom will not be tolerated” on my class syllabus.”
Traveling in a country with woefully inadequate facilities and resources was frustrating and maddening. Venturing out without knowing the language created some awkward, embarrassing, and sometimes humorous situations. In one instance, some enterprising and engaging salesmen inveigled my husband into posing for pictures, prominently holding up some sample commercial products. When the pictures and sample brochures arrived later, we discovered that he seemed to be enthusiastically endorsing a feminine hygiene product. Nevertheless, as we came to know our Chinese students, friends, and colleagues who shared their lives and experiences, we gained a new understanding of courage and an appreciation for the endurance of the human spirit, and the natural sweetness of the Chinese people.

Ruth Koenig's book "The Red Blackboard" is a real first person account of what it is like for a Westerner to live in China. Many of us travel in China and live in their Western Hotels; we do not see the real China. Having worked for the Internatioal Execuitive Service Corps in several countries, I understand that only after living in China for nearly one year the Koenig's were able to get their students to fully relate their exeriences and feelings. After reading this book a traveler has a better understanding of the things they see in China.

It was a sometimes difficult, frustrating, even maddening, but ultimately enjoyable and satisfying year.

It was an exciting teaching experience and and a fascinating look at a society and a culture that is unfamiliar to most Westerners. Dealing with the everyday events that presented themselves gave insight into the politics and values of China and left me with great affection and respect for its people. You will learn and even, I hope, laugh when you read about our experiences. It was the first time in my life I'd ever had to write on my syllabus, "Spitting in the classroom will not be tolerated;" the only time my husband was my hair colorist; and the greatest number of hours I'd spent without going to the bathroom.
Nevertheless, I hope that just as we came to a better appreciation of China, that the Chinese whom we came in contact with have a better understanding and an affection for Americans.

Okay, I'm impressed!.......2003-03-15
Talk about getting a "two for one" deal! When I saw this book I was expecting to have to sift through some boring, rehashed history of the SAS, I was pleasantly surprised! Not only is this excellent book a well written and easy to read Narrative of the SAS, it's a complete Survival and "How To" Book also! Author Mike Robinson is well known for his many other books on Special Operational Forces around the world.
Each topic is covered in detail, how to pull off cold weather operations, small unit tactics, desert work, rappelling, general survival, basic medical, chemical operations, Signals, radio work, weapons, staying hidden, booby traps, handling guerrilla troops, and much much more!!!! I stayed up all night reading this book and couldn't put it down!
The exotic pictures really set the book off well and each diagram of tactics is well presented. The information is top notch, not the usual "I was with em and killed a hundred people" type thing at all. You REALLY get your money's worth from this book! You'll be impressed (and educated!)
A good overview........2002-06-21
SAS shows training for every Special Forces troops in a fairly comprehensive overview. It is not easy to be in this elite group, and men must be commited to get there. Since 9-11 there is a new awareness of the dangers SF face to protect freedom, and a new appreciation.
If you want to know the path some of the men and women take, read this book.

Mike Robinson is a photojournalist who uses his artistic skills with the camera and drawings to chronicle the selection, training, testing, and intellectual requirements of this elite Regiment. The many photographs and drawings add to the scenes, but it is his articulate writing style that reveals an excellent writer sharing the world he knows. Robinson is a pseudonym for a man who served with the British Army and in overseas forces.
For the writers:
If battles are part of your story whether modern, fantasy, science fiction, history, war, romance, every genre, then seeing real heroes in action adds to your knowledge base and will make your warriors and their fights believable.
Suppose a highly trained SAS agent who is caught by time finds himself in the midst of the "French and Indian War" or "The War of the Roses." Imagine the great advantage for the "Redcoats" if a team of specialists happened to cross the Bermuda Triangle and find themselves in the midst of American war for Independence. There is no limitation for imagination.
As I read this book, I felt as if I were a miner plucking nuggets with every shifting of the sand. I hit the golden mother lode. Though I had purchased this book as a reference for my own creativity I found myself absorbed and involved -- Mike Robinson has crafted a masterpiece.
The book:
The SAS was formed in Africa over 50 years ago. The Regiment still wins most of their confrontations. Why? To become a member a man must overcome a wide range of training that includes physical, mental, weapon, equipment, paratrooping, medical, analysis, and more. The consistent training means that every member knows what to expect from others, and they build on a bond of absolute trust within each four-man Sabre Squadron.
Robinson's dedication in the Preface is a profound statement of his respect for these heroes: "For the cornerstone of their success has always been, and will always be, the individual SAS soldiers themselves. It is they who win, because they dare, often against impossible odds and at the cost of their lives. To these men this book is dedicated."
Overviews of the chapters:
* Joining the SAS -- volunteers must pass challenges that include navigation by compass and distance in areas that do not provide visible landmarks; jungles, deserts, mountains, or any place where weather has limited the visibility. Additionally, to become a member of the SAS each man must endure exhaustion and pain in their effort to reach the next rendezvous.
* Weapons Skills -- beginning with a day in 1972 when 250 guerrillas attacked nine SAS soldiers who, with a few local gendarmes and tribesmen, defeated the attackers this book documents weapons, skills, and uses including: snipers, battles, armament, intrusion defensive positions, and more.
* Explosives and Sabotage -- with knowledge and training SAS four-man patrol can cause damage that brings aggressive enemies to a stop.
* Counter-Terrorist Tactics -- terrorists are analyzed and a group of no more than 50 full-time soldiers are on call to defend and defeat terrorism tactics. This section includes descriptions of a warfare kit, dress, weapons, and exercises in the "Killing House."
* Fighting as a Four-man Team -- each regiment consists of four four-men troop specialists: medic, communications, linguist, and demolitions expert; also each man has at least one specific patrol skill. As their experiences with the SAS increases, so does the variety of these skills.
* Silent Killing Skills -- to survive when behind enemy lines each member is trained to kill without being seen. Various tools and methods are described.
* Medical Expertise -- trained to use what is available in the locale and in a med pack, these men help their comrades and friendly causalities.
* Civil Disorder Control -- in the midst of civil unrest extremists often use the turmoil to further their own ends. The Regiment have skills to "surgically remove" the subversives.
* Observing the Enemy -- camouflage and concealment skills allow a patrol to move into "hot spots" and strategize for victory.
* Signals and Radio Skills -- all soldiers are trained in the art of using communication equipment, hand and body signals, and Morse code.
* Behind Enemy Lines -- this includes destroying enemy communications, rescue missions, and survival.
* Staying Hidden -- trained to remain hidden even in the most boring or difficult conditions is the difference between success and failure. The SAS has embraces Risk.
* Operating in Hostile Regions -- SAS troops work and battle in the freezing arctic, hot humid jungles, barren desert sands, islands or on the ocean.
* Specialist Insertion Methods -- heavy transport aircraft, parachuting from high or low altitudes, helicopters where troops rappel down from the fuselage, canoes and other water flotation devices and stealth are only part of the skills used to reach the mission location.
* Booby Traps -- these devices are designed to maim rather than kill, and defeat the enemy's morale. The loss of morale creates carelessness, fear, and suspicion.
* Glossary -- of the weapons and equipment used by the SAS.

This book explains a whole lot about the tactics, fighting methods, and organization of Englands premier Special Air Service. A must read for anyone interested in how the SAS goes about its duties.

How does the law regard and define mental incompetence, when faced with the problem of meting out justice? To what extent has the law relied on extra-legal authorities--be they religious or scientific--to frame its own categories of mental incompetence and madness? Wild Beasts and Idle Humours takes us on an illuminating journey through the changing historical landscape of human nature and offers an unprecedented look at the legal conceptions of insanity from the pre-classical Greek world to the present. Although actual trial records are either totally lacking or incomplete until the eighteenth century, there are other sources from which the insanity defenses can be constructed.
In this book Daniel Robinson, a distinguished historian of psychology, pores over centuries of written law, statements by legal commentators, summaries of crimes, and punishments, to glean from these sources an understanding of epochal views of responsibility and competence. From the Greek phrenesis to the Roman notions of furiosus and non compos mentis, from the seventeenth-century witch trials to today's interpretation of mens rea, Robinson takes us through history and provides the intricate story of how the insanity defense has been construed as a meeting point of the law and those professions that chart human behavior and conduct: namely religion, medicine, and psychology. The result is a rare historical account of "insanity" within western civilization.
Wild Beasts and Idle Humours will be essential reading for anyone interested in the evolution of thinking not merely about legal insanity but about such core concepts as responsibility, fitness for the rule of law, competence to enter into contracts and covenants, the role of punishments, and the place of experts within the overall juridical context.

Not for the Non-Specialist Reader.......2001-09-30
Daniel N. Robinson's Wild Beasts and Idle Humours (The Insanity Defense from Antiquity to the Present) sounds and looks more fun than it actually will be for the average reader without a sure grounding in legal, philosophical and psychological theory and history. The author does indeed cover the period from antiquity to the present, as per the sub-title, and provides many interesting ideas along the way, taking a rather conservative approach, but there are also many cases and people just dropped into the book without any explanation on the assumption that the reader will be familiar with all of these legal cases and philosophers from the past two centuries. A grounding in classical and medieval history (with luck I did have that) will help the reader manage the first part of the book. For students of legal history, this book could prove quite interesting and, perhaps, invaluable as the author makes a clever attempt to bring ideas of insanity as far back as the writings of Homer and Hesiod. For this poor soul, the book was a struggle with a few rewards along the way.
