4 out of 5 stars Another Addition.......2007-05-21

As I have more in this series of books, I was fascinated by the year-by-year styles in the 1940's. And as with others, I was disappointed that they were not in colour. A minor problem, I think, because the descriptions provided as well as the names of colours also tells me about the time period. What exactly is the shade 'Cadet Blue'? But it does give good all around display of everything from children's clothes...not to mention miniature uniforms for little boys, to men's wear and funny looking men's underwear, to shoes, hats and purses, evening and wedding gowns and the rather uncomfortable looking women's underwear. Along with the others, they are a treasure and a time capsule.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, immersive, beautifully put together!.......2007-05-16

Whenever I take this book out, people fight over a peek into its glossy pages. It covers everything in fashion from the forties, though mostly focusing on women. The pictures depict fashions, from dresses to shoes, hats and gloves to maternity wear; the women's hairstyles, makeup, undergarments, and overall looks give the reader the most authentic possible view of fashion and the aesthetic ideals of the time. The catalogue also shows the prices and features descriptions that include fabric and color. Seeing such low prices is pretty crazy! Obviously, it was relative to wages and the overall cost of living then, but the immersive effect of the book is still strange and fascinating. There are some pictures of man's and children's fashions. This book is thorough and unbelievably beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-01-04

I was looking for ideas for a 1940's costume for a dance competition. This catalog helped me tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars I'm in to retro fashion anyway.......2006-11-06

I love the book. I use it to give me inspiration for my designs. It's a good reference book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-10-11

An excellent visual source of information on the cloths worn during this time period. Most pleasing to the eye.

A must have for any world war two enthusiast who understands war is more than the men in uniform but the people of the times.

Great book.

3 out of 5 stars overpriced.......2005-09-25

I have other books by Richard Schmid. The price for this book, however, is extremely overpriced. The range of $200 to $400 for a used book of this size is much too high His later book "ALL I know about painting" is worth much much more. I paid $100 for this book 6 years ago (new).

4 out of 5 stars Practical approaches.......2003-09-24

My recommendation is based upon the book's content, not collectability value. I have been painting for over thirty years and find the information, techniques and insites in this book very helpful for the figure painter. I often go back to my reference books to rekindle my interest in various techniques and I use Schmid's book when I want to return to oil techniques for figure work. Unfortunatly, most of the good texts on figure work in oil are out of print (like Schmid's). Based on the book's usefulness, I recommend it to any figure artist.

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this book........2002-04-22

I am a figurative painter and I have read this book. I can only conjecture that all the recent publicity about Richard Schmid has raised the price of this book to the outer limits!
I was glad I didn't fall into this price-hipe trap. The book originally sold for around $12.95 and I think that as a book that is what it is worth. I have the same sentiments for "Richard Schmid paints the landscape". If you are an artist I recommend the most recent book, "Alla Prima Painting " which is still way overpriced at $100. but if it is Mr. Schmid's technique and experience you are after this will help you to understand his thoughts, philosophy and technique a little better. Book collecters may feel differently about the inflated price. I am not writting for their benefit but for the artist or art enthusist.

4 out of 5 stars An wonderful book on classical figure painting worth reading.......1998-10-14

I think this book is a beneficial addition to any painters library. Even if you do not paint in the classical traditions it is an excellent source of techniques and thoughts on painting.

Book Description

Handsomely illustrated, easy-to-follow beginners' guide provides instructions for painting the head, torso, arm and leg, as well as step-by-step demonstrations for painting seven female figures. Additional advice on planning the painting, lighting the figure, sketching with oils, and figure drawing with pencil, charcoal, and chalk.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good start........2001-12-28

This book is good for beginners in oil figure painting. It is thorough and instructional.

As you may see in the preview pages, it covers materials and basic techniques in the rendition of female figures in oil. It is also well-written, very readable, and full of practical advice (from how to choose materials to how to find live models). The demonstrations covered in the book are presented clearly and step-by-step (as stated in the title).

For readers who consider buying this book: In the beginning, the book covers how to paint each part of a (generic) female figure. It then moves on to showing how to paint females in different positions. In essence, the artist does a quick sketch in umber (thin wash in turpentine) or charcoal to capture the gesture of the figure. The sketching involves using simple blocks to render torso, hip, legs, etc. This method perhaps is much appreciated by readers who still have not established facility in drawing complex figure gestures. The artist then continues with a dark-to-light approach, rendering masses of shadow and flesh colors; and finishes the painting with highlighted details.

If the above is still not helpful enough, let me be more opinionated, as follows:

- There are NO shortcuts in learning to become a good oil figure painter. This book only serves well as a STARTING GUIDE for beginning oil painters, rather than a comprehensive document as to how to paint female figures.

- When starting to learn something new, as in any discipline, a beginner who follows strictly the instructions will make good progresses. In my opinion, this book will guarantee the "breakthrough" that beginners are looking for. Namely, the level of confusion in the very first figure painting session will soon be diminished, likeness (in terms of gesture and color rendition) will be improved, etc.

- On the other hand, if the readers are looking for other approaches and techniques, perhaps there are two things to do: experimenting a lot and referring themselves to other books of this genre. (See my "About You Area" for a recommended list.)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars it's okay.......2007-03-24

It's an okay book. Not too thrilled by it. Most of the pictures are black and white. Methods are kind of old. The one copy I got have a couple pages torn, which is really annoying. I could've sent it back but too much trouble. Guess it's okay for some fundamentals of figure painting but I wouldn't expect too much out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Figure Painting.......2006-09-02

I am an amateur in painting and this book is very helpful in determining which colors to use for flesh tones and the anatomy illustrated is a excellent resource for the basic design of the figure. It's a good reference to use for each oil painting project.

5 out of 5 stars Good service.......2005-09-23

This book was sent to me extremely quickly and was in perfect condition. I'd order from them again.

5 out of 5 stars What a treat! Please do not touch!.......2001-08-10

I first read this book and tried out some projects from it (out of a total of 24) in 1993 and only purchased a copy for myself as a reference recently.

What a treat! Please do not touch (what you see)!

With only 155+ pages, the author thoroughly covered materials (paints, brushes, knives, canvases, mediums), techniques (stretching canvases, brushworks), basic figure proportions (from head to toe), and full figure painting; working in black and white paints; then moved on to colors.

Twenty four projects, working from separate body parts to full figures, going from black and white to colors, are discussed in-length. Different color schemes (based on complexions, such as blonds, red heads, and based on ethnic groups, including western and oriental).

For readers who consider buying this book: The author's techniques involve painting dark-to-light, covering shadow and background in early stages (block-in), then adjusting local colors to achieve appropriate hues and values, finally, going for little details to finish the painting.

If you have actually done some life figure painting in oil, you will appreciate very much the author's analysis on color temperature, light, and shadow. The author's expertise is surely shown in his paintings; these beautiful models have come to live right in front of your eyes.

HAVE YOU NOT BEEN WARNED NOT TO TOUCH!

My final notes, however, are that to most benefit this book, the readers:

- should have a good drawing skill to achieve likeness from a life model. This book does not help if you don't have it

- should read the book and try out some projects

- should apply the guidelines discussed in the book AND paint from REAL MODELS. Only until then will you have a chance to understand the subtleness and beauty of light, color temperature, shadow, as well as techniques presented in the book.

Subconciously, information presented in the book always comes back to me when I am doing life figure painting, to say the least.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!

4 out of 5 stars Thorough guide to painting the figure.......1999-11-05

There are quite a few books on drawing the figure, but unless you find an OOP Walter Foster guide to painting the nude, or want to fork over $ 100 for the Richard Schmid classic, there are very few on painting the figure. This book fills that gap nicely. Covers drawing, skin tones, the difference between color tones for a blonde and a redhead, selecting a model. Everything you need to accomplish the hardest task facing an artist - painting the female nude. The Gnat says buy it!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer and all-round reference.......2004-01-20

I just upgraded from my simple point-and-shoot digital camera to a digital SLR, and in doing so discovered a whole new world of complexity...and potential. I decided a needed a good reference to get me off the ground quickly, so I can learn the fundamentals (at least) of more advanced photography.
This book has everything I need to get going. It gives everything from the basics to more advanced topics, and presents everything in a really easy-to-grasp visual format.
This book really covers everything you're going to need to start out with. From understanding the whys and whats of ditital photography and cameras, to topics such as composition, focal length, controlling exposure, understanding light (a very important topic, and covered *really* well in this text!), to digital editing, touchup and effects. This is a great start to my photography library...
I would heartily recommend this to anyone just starting out in digital photography - whatever type of camera they're using.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2001-10-25

This book is great for anyone starting in digital photography. I have read and used several books so far and this is one of the best. It may not be the one for a professional or one who is already proficient in digital photography, but it you are just learning this is one I highly recommend. There are many books on the subject and many are not very good, but this is only one of 3 that I would give a high rating to.

5 out of 5 stars if you are starting in digital photography then this is it........2001-10-17

I have read this book and tried it with my camera and computer for the last few days and I deceided to get one of my own. I wish I had this one when I started last year. I have used several other books and only one even comes close to this one for starting to learn digital photography. I have found many useful items that I did not know before. Although it cant cover all kinds of software, this does an excellent job of covering the basics. I intend to use this book to help teach other family members digital photography now that some of them have become interested. It really is a book for beginners but perhaps those who are already quite proficient may find it too basic. For those starting out, I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars To Simple, Waste of $$$.......2001-09-15

The explanations are too simple. Though there are many drawings but some of these drawings are uncecessary. There was at least one error that's found. On page 93. The Lighten Images should have a lower f-stop, whereas the Darken Images should have a highter f-stop. However for some reasons, these two figures are misplaced. Bad decision of getting this book!!!

                  Book Description

In Meeting the Professor, Alexander Blackburn tells the story of growing up as the son of William Blackburn, the legendary professor of English at Duke University. Before his death in 1972, William Blackburn formed strong mentor-protégé relationships with such students as William Styron, Reynolds Price, Fred Chappell, and Guy Davenport, to name only a few. Styron would later describe William Blackburn as "unquestionably a glorious teacher." Through Alexander Blackburn's compassionate look at the "presence and influence of the unique and noble figures" of his parents, we also gain insight into his own struggles to become a writer and teacher.

5 out of 5 stars A compellingly written and inherently fascinating memoir.......2005-01-11

Meeting The Professor: Growing Up In The William Blackburn Family is the autobiography of novelist, essayist, editor, and academician Alexander Blackburn (Professor Emeritus of English, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs). Meeting The Professor provides a kind of dual portrait of Alexander and his father William Blackburn (a legendary crative-writing professor at Duke University and mentor to such authors as Reynolds Price, William Styron, Anne Tyler, and Fred Chappell). Born in Iran to mission parents, William Blackburn became a Rhodes scholar at xford and earned a Ph.D. from Yale. He was a brooding, taciturn and ultimately unknowable man who died blind and speecless at age 73, with one of his most beloved students, Reynolds Price, staying at the bedside night after night playing Mozart for him. Alexader Blackburn would follow the literary life, becoming a teacher of writing like his illustrtous father, as well as maturing into a novelist. Meeting The Professor is enhanced with 40 black/white photographs and is a compellingly written and inherently fascinating memoir.
