This is a very easy to follow guide to wood frame construction. I recommend it as a basic reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Wood Frame Construction.......2007-05-31

This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build.......2007-04-09

I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.

4 out of 5 stars Good graphic presentaion of wood frame construction.......2007-03-17

This book is a good tool for anyone, do-it-yourselfer or not, to grasp how North American homes are put together. An excellent tool to learn the nomenclature of houses and house construction. I missed a discussion of the the reasons for and the pros and cons of the various methods. On the other hand, the lack of text is a strongpoint of this book, at least for those who want to quickly get up to speed on home construction.

      Book Description

Highlighting one of the Peabody Museum's most important archaeological expeditions--the excavation of the Swarts Ranch Ruin in southwestern New Mexico by Harriet and Burton Cosgrove in the mid-1920s--Steven LeBlanc's book features rare, never-before-published examples of Mimbres painted pottery, considered by many scholars to be the most unique of all the ancient art traditions of North America. Made between A.D. 1000 and 1150, these pottery bowls and jars depict birds, fish, insects, and mammals that the Mimbres encountered in their daily lives, portray mythical beings, and show humans participating in both ritual and everyday activities. LeBlanc traces the origins of the Mimbres people and what became of them, and he explores our present understanding of what the images mean and what scholars have learned about the Mimbres people in the 75 years since the Cosgroves' expedition.

      Book Description

This reissue of three early essays on Mimbres archaeology and design fills a major gap in the literature on the Mimbres, whose pottery has long fascinated students of the prehistoric Southwest. Fewkes, one of the eminent archaeologists of the early twentieth century, introduced Mimbres art to scholars when he published these essays with the Smithsonian Institution between 1914 and 1924, under the titles Archaeology of the Lower Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, Designs on Prehistoric Pottery from the Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, and Additional Designs on Prehistoric Mimbres Pottery. Long out-of-print, these essays represent the first analysis and description of the complex abstract and representational designs that continue to fascinate us 2,000 years after they were painted.

        Book Description

A distinguished scholar of Southwestern Native arts for over thirty years, J. J. Brody here returns to his early work on the Mimbres ceramic tradition, which established him as the leading authority on the arts of this ancient people. The Mimbres cultural florescence between A.D. 1000 and A.D. 1140 remains one of the most visually astonishing and anthropologically intriguing questions in Southwest prehistory. In this revised edition, Dr. Brody incorporates the extensive fieldwork done on Mimbres sites since the original publication in 1977, updating his discussion of village life, the larger world in which the Mimbres people lived, and how the art that they practiced illuminates these wider issues. He addresses human and animal iconography, the importance of perspective and motion in perceiving Mimbres artistry, and the technology used to produce the ceramics. Placing the study of ancient art and artifacts in the present, he notes the impact of the antiquities market on archaeological and artistic research.

This lively, engaging work will interest archaeologists, art historians, and all people who enjoy the beauty, humor, and humanity of Mimbres pottery. Featuring over one hundred new illustrations and insights drawn from a lifetime of study and contemplation, this is much more than a revised edition - indeed, it establishes a new standard for the artistic interpretation of a classic Southwestern culture for the new century.

        Book Description

James and Other Apes is a collection of 50 close-up portraits of gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans and bonobos. The images are so strong and the featured apes-all named, with personal histories-so human-like that the viewer calls into question the dividing-line between "man" and "animal." Photographed in sanctuaries across Africa and Asia, the apes featured are mainly victims of the trade in bush meat that threatens to cause their extinction. The work of young British image-maker James Mollison, a photographer working for the Benetton artlab "Fabrica" outside Venice, these images are a moving and powerful argument for the protection of the great apes and endorsed by world-renowned scientist and best-selling author Jane Goodall in her powerful introduction to the book.

Arrived well packed in mint condition -Initially read the introduction by Jane Goodhall then turned the pages with the eyes captivating as each Ape jumped out from it's own feature page. A great coffee table book. Although there is a summary for each Ape at the end of the book was looking for more information!

5 out of 5 stars A great work in primate portraiture.......2006-02-26

Mollison's "James and Other Apes" consists of a series of large prints of close-cropped frontal face shots of a number of chimps, gorillas, orangs, and bonobos (in that order.) The lighting and photographic quality is excellent. The work constitutes a compelling examination of both the individuality each ape possesses and the clear and deep connections we still have with our distant cousins.

Jane Goodall wrote a nice introduction that compliments the books silent call for attention to the plight of these magnificent species and individuals. This is a great coffee table book for anyone interested in photography, portraiture or primates.

5 out of 5 stars a piece of pur pleasure.......2005-10-13

I live in Australia and read an article in our saturday paper the Sydney Morning Hearald.
The magazine had one of the images from James Mollison and Other Apes on the cover and I opened to the page immediately, I tore out the pages and stuck them onto my fridge enjoying them and the reactions they caused.
The article was published in about march 2005, said the book was due for publication in August. I must admit I was impatient to have my own copy of the book. I ordered it through a local bookshop noticing that available here was only the paperback. I had a glimpse of it at a Sydney shop it was only the size of a paperback, somehow I found Amazon and 2 weeks later the most beautiful book arrived, so big it didn't fit on my bookshelf. The only way to view these very special and important images. Thanks to James Mollison.

        5 out of 5 stars A magnificent book.......2005-10-05

First of all, this is a wery unique book. There is only minimal amount of text, the main body of the book being designated for presenting photographed facial close-up portraits of great apes, fifty individuals in total. The visual outlook of the book is almost poetic.

But this book is not only a collection of photographs. In the end of the book there are short biographies for each of these individuals, the brief desctiptions giving each face a truley unique personality. And at least for me, the essence of this book is in fact in these - quite often sad - biographies.

Altough many of the photographed apes have had traumatic experiences as a result of human cruelty, in the end the warmth of these magnificent beings shines trough.

Personally I have not considered myself as an ape enthusiast, but after this book I truley am. I recommend it to all who appreciate the variety of life on this planet. This book is a beautiful homage to our close cousins.

4 out of 5 stars a Rorschach test for humanity.......2005-01-10

I had vaguely heard of this book, then surprisingly received it as a gift. It's not what I expected, and is beyond what I could have imagined. Only a few of the protraits could be considered cute or endearing - most are penetrating, a few are frightening. In thumbing through the pages, there's no doubt I'm face to face with other soulful, conscious beings. This book is definitely the safest way to look a great ape in the eyes, and provides a far more intimate opportunity to gaze into and scrutinize the dimentions of a face than we generally have even with other human beings. Without a doubt, the best gift of this book was in watching my reactions rise to each portrait, delving into my own fears and attractions. Each face made me ponder what is human, what is alien, and what is the faint line between? I've been an ape fan for years, I need no convincing of our shared worth. But this is the first time I've recognized how foridable in soul, purpose, and spirit apes actually are. This book is an excellent reality check for anyone who wonders about their place under the sun.

Grimmy is back! And he's funnier than ever in this brand-new collection from Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Peters. Grimmy is the wisecracking, opinionated, cat-terrorizing, postman-chasing, freeloading bon vivant who brings delighted smiles to the faces of his millions of adoring fans in the enormously popular cartoon strip Mother Goose and Grimm.

You either love "Mother Goose and Grimm" or you don't know "Mother Goose and Grimm." In-jokes galore, comic-strip surrealism to the max, an improbably unique Greek chorus-cum-Everyman in the person of Grimmy, and the incomparably droll Mother Goose combine for a highly recommended read. Just be careful about reading it on public transit or elevators--people will begin to wonder about you!

5 out of 5 stars More than just another Notre Dame book.......2007-01-05

Marvin O'Connell's biography of Edward Sorin is an excellent work of scholarship as well as a superbly written story. Let me preface this review by saying that that as an undergraduate history major at Notre Dame I looked forward to Father O'Connell's classes because they were some of the best. He is a master storyteller and can make the mundane issues of history come to life.

In this book O'Connell tells us the story of a young religious order that has a missionary zeal expands into three foreign continents. As a student of Notre Dame history I found that Father O'Connell was able to give me new insight into the inner workings of the Indiana Provence. The chapter on the rebuilding of the main building after the fire is a remarkable tale. The fact that they were able to rebuild the building in less than five months is almost unbelievable. As a construction professional, I doubt that it could be done today.

I would recommend this book to anyone that would like to learn about early Notre Dame and Holy Cross history, however this book is more than the history of Notre Dame and Edward Sorin. This book gives a great snapshot of Catholic History in the United States.
This book along with Jay Dolan's The American Catholic Experience and Robert Burns' Being Catholic Being American will give you a great feeling for the formation of the American Catholic Church.

This is not a "beach book" but it reads almost like a novel and I found myself reading chapter after chapter late into the night.

                5 out of 5 stars A true American adventure.......2001-12-27

Marvin O'Connell has done a wonderful and complete job of describing the life of Edward Sorin. The author begins in a small French village and brings the life of Sorin forward in clear and entertaining language. A story of faith, courage, and determination unfold in the 800 pages without wasting the readers time. The story of Edward Sorin who founded the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana reflects the American spirit. Overcoming difficulties, both human and physical elements, was commonplace for Sorin. The author has done an excellent job of capturing the life of Sorin, and allows his subject to serve as an example for all. This book is recommended as an excellent biography, inspirational writing, and American adventure.

My husband bought this book and I was curious about it when I read the title. I started reading and just couldn't stop. This is a book full of memories and moments that stayed in the mind of the narrator, and they take us (as readers) back to our own memories. These stories made me think about friends in the playground, about that one fleeting moment of athletic success and how it feels to be so close to my dreams of glory. Reading story after story reminded me about that past that we very often take for granted and easily forget, but that will always be a series of defining moments that make us who we are. It's also gratifying to read where the narrator ended up, since he reflects also on his own present life. I am not a hockey fan, but I enjoy good stories, especially when they're written in a way that grabs you.

5 out of 5 stars Just sit back and enjoy the ride.......2007-10-01

Life is ultimately about love. We all recognize love, although we do not love in the same way. None understands the logic of our individual passions, but we count ourselves fortunate to be near its mystery. LA Car Editor-at-Large and sports journalist Brian Kennedy writes about his lifelong love and passion in Growing Up Hockey (Folklore Publishing, 2007). The book draws you in at the beginning, with Brian's preschool adventure onto ice in Montreal, and ends with his touching the Duck's Stanley Cup in Los Angeles. The section titles of his book say it well: Learning the Game, Living the Game, Loving the Game. This is a story of a boy who grows up in Canada 's suburbs living for his pee wee league and collecting NHL cards. This is a story of a man who still is the consummate fan watching games over and over so that the video wears thin. He played until it got too rough, he refereed, he bought tickets from scalpers. He finally finds opportunity to worm himself nearer the game by becoming a sports writer. Here is another instance where he writes so he can be closer to his favorite sport. You see, Brian has another passion and love. Brian also writes about cars and car racing. Hockey and cars are about the adrenaline of gliding speed. But why analyze. Growing Up Hockey should be approached in much the same way as Brian's automotive articles: Just sit back, hang on and enjoy the ride.
