Book Description
Aby Warburg (1866-1929) is best known as the originator of the discipline of iconology and as the founder of the institute that bears his name. His followers included such celebrated art historians of the twentieth century as Erwin Panofsky, Edgar Wind, and Fritz Saxl. But his heirs developed, for the most part, a domesticated iconology based on the interpretation of symbolic material. As Phillippe-Alain Michaud shows in this important book, Warburg's own project was remote from any positivist or neo-Kantian ambitions. Nourished on the work of Nietzsche and Burckhardt, Warburg fashioned a "critical iconology" to reveal the irrationality of the image in Western culture. Opposing the grand teleological narratives of art inaugurated by Vasari, Warburg's method operated through historical anachronisms and discontinuities. Using "montage-collision" to create textless collections of images, he brought together pagan artifacts and masterpieces of Florentine Renaissance art, ancient Near East astrology and the Lutheran Reformation, Mannerist festivals and the sacred dances of Native Americans. Michaud insists that for Warburg, the practice of art history was the discovery within the art work itself of fracture, contradictions, tensions, and the energies of magic, empathy, totemism, and animism. Challenging normative accounts of Western European classicism, Warburg located the real sources of the Renaissance in the Dionysian spirit, in the expression of movement and dance, in the experience of trance personified in the frenzied nymph or ecstatic maenad.
Aby Warburg and the Image in Motion is not only a book about Warburg but a book written with him; Michaud uses Warburg's intuitions and discoveries to analyze other categories of imagery, including the daguerreotype, the chronophotography of Etienne-Jules Marey, early cinema, and the dances of Loie Fuller. It will be essential reading for anyone concerned with the origins of modern art history and the visual culture of modernity.

butterflies in the details.......2004-05-25
It is my hope there will be more such pleasing books and articles about Aby Warburg's life and works. M.'s book suffices to place the Florentine and Native American explorations of Warburg in context and in (usefully) anachronistic correspondance. The complete title promises an image in motion, though most of the images Warburg used for his work were static plates. Mightily, M. shows the energies of the figures--the reticulations and folds of serpents and veils--express the flash of a captured ecstatic movement that enthralled Warburg and echoes the Dionysian-pagan vision of Nietzsche.
The pursuit of iconography and quest for symbols and similar energies in art and ritual culture still remain prominent in the writing of working Warburgians. However, Warburg himself gains popularity now too among historians who find interest in his techniques (montage work and avoidance of narrative) and M. makes similar claims for Warburg's relevance to cinema and film theory.
Spanning biography, analysis, theory and history, this book is most handsomely produced (gorgeous b/w plates), utterly readable, and completely cogent.

Men Before 10AM Too book.......2006-11-10
Really nice black and white photos. i bought the book for the Mark harmon photo "Mark Harmon 7.33". I would have liked some smaller shots of other pictures that were taken during the shoots for the book on each page, maybe to see what was rejected.
Men and their Natural Beauty.......2004-06-08
The photographer couldn't have done a better job capturing those sweet and innocent moments of the men we love most. Her depictions gave view to a soft and tangible feel to these famous faces. I absolutely love this book! I also loved the idea that you put the beautiful, Til Schweiger as the cover man. Til is my favourite actor; not so big in the United States, but definitely the Brad Pitt for Germany. My regards to the makers of this book.
Men in their natural habitat.......2003-08-23
No matter what celebrity drew you to this listing, you should know that this book is well worth having. Any star photographer can assemble a collection of famous people, but only Veronique Vial can bring you something quite like this. What you see, as you look at these images, are people so completely at ease with her -- and the camera's -- presence that they've let their guards down and revealed their most basic, human selves to her, to her camera, and to us. These are the stars before they put their public masks on, and Veronique treats them with enormous respect and kindness, while treating her audience to something we otherwise can never have: an intimate, private moment with our favorite public figures.
Okay.......2003-04-25
The only picture really worth looking at was Vin Diesel (page 51). He's the reason I bought the book.
Two words....Vin Diesel........2002-02-20
All the men in this book are amazing in with their various looks and different ways about them. But, I'm sorry, Vin Diesel just looks sooo hot and stands out the most in this book. Of course, this is just my opinion, but it was reason enough for me to buy the book...hee.

Book Description
The Missing White Dragon is a wonderful compilation of the most popular Asian folk tales and select portions of history, retold with an exotic touch of romance. Reading this book not only introduces fans to the culture of Asia, but it also gives readers insight to the bedtime stories Asian parents often tell their children at night. In essence, this beautifully written anthology shows fans the influential stories Asian children hear just as Americans children would be told fairy tales such as Goldilocks, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel & Gretel.
Customer Reviews:
Cool anthology manga!.......2006-03-07
You don't usually see many actual manga anthology graphic novels. This is a collection of short fantasy stories from Park Young Ha, the creator of the manhwa Bambi. They are all shojo-oriented and take place at different parts of an alternate reality.
The first story is the title chapter where a young man who finds out he's being forced to marry a pretty young demon girl. Neither of them wants to marry the other, so their fathers agree to cancel the wedding if they can find the young man's family heirloom, a seal of a white dragon. Unbeknownst to them, he actually gave it to the demon girl as a present when they met as kids.
The next one appeals to anthropomorphics a little more. In it, animal spirits live with the humans in a single world, and one bright young girl acts as a struggling healer. She saves the life of a wolf spirit who takes on human form to help her realize her true feelings.
Following that is the only story in the book that takes place in modern day. A male student accidently reads an encantation from his girlfriend's spellbook. Now, she has dog ears and a tail. They go to see a local wizard who tells them the only way to break the spell is if the boy confesses his love for her.
Next, an adventurous girl goes to sell her father's divine sword. However, she encounters a handsome dragon in human form who claims to be the original owner of the sword. Together, they help out a fox spirit free his wife who is trapped, while at the same time fall in love with each other.
Finally, a failing summonner tries to woo the heart of a princess with his fairy slave girl. He ends up landing in prision because of his attempt to scam everyone, but his fairy helps him out.
All in all, this was a nice little anthology. It's refreshing to see a manhwa or manga done in this fashion. Nice fairy tale-like storylines, with fresh shojo artwork. Furries should love it as well as readers of girls manga.

A book for the emergent church to consider........2007-06-22
This is Christianity before the Machiavellian takeover. Faith before Christianity was a political party. Principles from a time when principles were still an important material for building relationship. It's all the stuff the emergent church is yearning for.
It is also - at least in my life, and most importantly - a book that describes a faith that will not melt in the furnaces of pain. A rare and precious thing.
Sweet Balm for a Wounded Soul.......2007-05-16
I think Martin Lloyd Jones' endorsement of this book is a good place to start: "I shall never cease to be grateful to...Richard Sibbs who was balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil...I found at that time that Richard Sibbes who was known in London in the early seventeenth century as 'The Heavenly Doctor Sibbes' was an unfailing remedy."
There are many reasons why we may feel like this: our struggle with sin is finding little or no progress, we are overwhelmed by the remaining corruption that abounds in our hearts, we have been blindsided by devestating circumstances, we have entered into a perpetual state of doubt regarding the reality of our salvation, or a combination of all the above. Many of us can attest to the fact that we have often felt like a bruised reed.
The good news that Sibbes labors to provide his readers in this wonderful little book is that truth found in Isaiah 42:3: Jesus will not break the bruised reed, nor will he extinguish a dimly burning wick. On the contrary, Christ cherishes the least amount of grace in a believer's heart and seeks to fan it into flame. Sibbes realizes that we, like the author of Hebrews reminds us, "are in need of endurance" (Hebrews 10:36), in times where we feel only steps away from foregoing the battle altogether. In order to provide us with the strength to persevere, Sibbes gives hopeful counsel. Although there is much excellent material throughout this book, for the sake of space I will mention only a few.
1. First, we need to remember that bruising is absolutely essential. "This bruising is required before conversion that so that Spirit may make way for himself into the heart by levelling all proud, high thoughts, and that we may understand ourselves to be what indeed we are by nature" (4). It is also essential after conversion, "After conversion we need bruising so that reeds may know themselves to be reeds, and not oaks" (5). There is good reason for why Christ, in his wisdom, bruises us. One primary reason is so that we might be humbled and brought off of relying upon ourselves. Sibbes later explains, "Hence proceed those spiritual desertions in which he often leaves us to ourselves, in regard to both grace and comfort, that we may know the spring head of these to be outside ourselves" (115). Christ bruises us in order to show us, mercifully, that we are fully dependent upon Him.
2. Christ may allow us to be conquered by sin in order to help us have victory over other, more serious sins. Sibbes explains, "A Christian conquers, even when he is conquered. When he is conquered by some sins, he gets victory over others more dangerous, such as spiritual pride and security" (95).
3. In order to keep from endless despair, we must treasure the least amount of grace we find in our hearts. Sibbes again, "Since there is such comfort where there is a little truth of grace...let us often try what God has wrought in us, search our good as well as our ill, and be thankful to God for the least measure of grace..." (124). In other words, morbid introspection that sees only sin and not the grace that God has worked in our hearts (however small) is not wise or healthy. We must, in order to persevere, be able to see and thank God for any true grace we find in our hearts.
4. Finally, always remember that faith will prevail. Sibbes closes, "The Lord reveal himself more and more to use in the face of his Son Jesus Christ and magnify the power of his grace in cherishing those beginnings of grace in the midst of our corruptions, and sanctify the consideration of our own infirmities to humble us, and his tender mercy to encourage us...And may he grant that the prevailing power of His Spirit in us should be an evidence of the truth of grace begun, and a pledge of final victory, at that time when He will be all in all, for all eternity. Amen" (128).
As I stated above, there is much, much more. And I heartily recommend this book to those who are currently feeling bruised and battered and who need great encouragement. Let Sibbes be a means of grace and comfort to your weary soul.
Encouragement for the struggling Christian.......2006-12-11
Richard Sibbes was born in Suffolk in 1577 and started his studies at Cambridge in 1595. In 1632 he was sentenced to banishment to New England due to his strong Puritanical tendencies, but he died before the sentence could be carried out. He was one of the most influential Puritans in the early seventeenth century and was renowned for his powerful and eloquent preaching. He wrote many essays and books but he will always be remembered for writing The Bruised Reed. First published in 1630, it has now been reprinted numerous times and has comforted and reassured many a Christian soul.
The book centers around the third verse in Isaiah 42. It reads, "A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth." Breaking that verse down, Sibbes does a masterful job of comforting and encouraging Christians in their walk with Christ. The great Anglican theologian, Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones, wrote of The Bruised Reed, saying it was a "balm to my soul at a period in my life when I was overworked and badly overtired, and therefore subject in an unusual manner to the onslaughts of the devil...The Bruised Reed...quietened, soothed, comforted, encouraged and healed me."
What to like: Widely recognized as a classical piece of Christian literature, The Bruised Reed shows Christians why Isaiah's comparison of us to a bruised reed and a smoking flax are accurate. We are bruised. We are in a body that constantly wars with God's Spirit. And our faith can hardly be compared to a fire, for often we barely give off enough heat to smoke. Yet Sibbes shows us this is no reason to be discouraged. While it is easy for us to get discouraged about our lack of faith at times and our sinful tendencies Christ will not let us break nor let our small spark of faith be quenched. Giving practical advice on Christian living, Sibbes masterpiece is gentle yet firm; theologically deep but practical.
What not to like: I'm going to be honest here - this book was hard for me to read and that's not something I say lightly. The text was written in 1630 and the old English used is exceedingly difficult at times. This is not a book I would recommend to light readers. The book only weighs in at 128 pages but it took me a good while to read it; I would say it took me at least as long as it would normally take me to read a more modern book twice the size. I'm not saying that it was not worth the effort or that I didn't mine significant spiritual gems from the contents - just that, at times, it was mentally draining.
Memorable Quote: The whole conduct of a Christian is nothing else but knowledge reduced to will, affection and practice. If the digestion of food in the stomach is not good, the working of the liver cannot be good; so if there is error in the judgment it mars the whole of practice, as an error in the foundation does a building. God will have no blind sacrifices, no unreasonable services (Isa. 1:13), but will have us to love him with all our mind (Rom. 12:2), that is, with our understanding part, as well as with all our hearts (Luke 10:27), that is, the feeling part of the soul.
Conclusion: Though not for the novice reader, this book is well worth the effort for Christians to read. The wisdom in it will go a long way to help us during those times of discouragement and downheartedness. I would also add that the gentle and humble tone of the book should be an example for all Christians to imitate when communicating the truth of the gospel. All in all, this was a most uplifting read and did much to encourage me to persist in my feeble attempts to live my life for Christ.
Puritan masterpiece..........2006-11-08
this book, through Scripture, is food to the hurting soul. Have you had those times where you are so torn by your sin that you feel as though there is no way that Christ would save you, or would want to commune with you? This book points to that thought as proof of the bruised reed that needs to be gathered by the One who created it. This book will lift you up to show you that you must be bruised to understand forgiveness. You must be bruised to understand your Saviour more intimitely. I highly recommend to anyone, whether you have felt this way or not about your life this book will lift you and place you in the Father's hands, making you understand, through Scripture, that the Father truly cares for His children.
Cruisin' For A Bruisin'.......2005-11-22
Concerning Richard Sibbes, Charles Spurgeon claimed "Sibbes never wastes the student's time, he scatters pearls and diamonds with both hands." With the same profundity and richness that typically characterizes Puritan works Sibbes, in The Bruised Reed, masterfully and beautifully deals with things like brokenness, humility, mercy, and grace all wrapped up in the greater subject of hardships, whether they be brought by persecution or one's own sin. In a time where hedonism seems to reign supreme and commandeers the hearts of sinners and confused Christians alike, The Bruised Reed delivers a good dose of sobriety to those who would revel in their good circumstance.
Might it be if one is not under affliction of one sort or another that he has not been bruised, broken, or brought to the end of himself? And if not, has he, in his pride, been given over to his depraved mind, unable to hear the thunder of God's voice which grants a man repentance? May it not be for you, me, or anyone! The wise Puritan writes, "This is such a one as our Saviour Chirst terms 'poor in spirit' (Matt. 5:3), who sees his wants, and also sees himself indebted to divine justice..." and God lowers us "levelling all proud, high thoughts, and that we may understand ourselves to be what indeed we are by nature." Let the sinner see his suffering as God's kindness which leads to salvation. Let the saint see his suffering as the means by which God perfects grace in the heart of His servant, mortifying the flesh.
With simple language and Biblical saturation, Sibbes encourages the Christian to take comfort in tribulation while looking to victory, to show grace to the weak, and to believe in Christ's goodness to us despite afflictions undergone. I heartily encourage any and all to read this fine work and now I leave you with some words of wisdom from Richard Sibbes. "In pursuing his calling, Christ will not break the bruised reed, nor quench the smoking flax...he will not only not break nor quench, but he will cherish those with whom he deals."

Can it really all be true?.......2001-06-09
Maybe I am a little sceptic, maybe I missed the point of this book but it left me asking more questions than discovering answers. I don't doubt that James had an horrific childhood and I don't doubt that he discovered the Lord.....but can it really all be this simple!! At his very lowest James was picked up in a car by Scott and his wife, who saw it as their mission in life to drive around all day looking for lost souls to save. This was the lowest point in James's life and he was told to accept the Lord and his whole life would change....and it did. From here on anything James wanted he just had to pray, and it happpened. A young man was dying of aids in Kenya, James prayed for him, and he began to get better. James wished to buy a property for his church back home in the USA he submitted an offer of $47000 on a property valued at $700,000+,but before submitting the offer he prayed and would you believe it his offer was accepted. I so much wanted to find something in this book, maybe if I could speak to James I would discover the Lord's magic, but like all sceptic's I have unanswered questions, ok one small boy was cured of aids but what about all the rest in the world? What about all the day to day suffering all around the world? Can it really all be this simple and all be answered and solved in a positive way by saying I believe? I am from Northern Ireland and found the last chapter in this book of particular interest, James makes mention to Clarence and Ruth Coulter in a little town called Tandragee....well it so happens that Clarence is my cousin and a truly great and wonderful Christian he is too. As I said earlier this book left so many unanswered questions in my mind, the only way I could hope to answer them is by meeting James or having a likewise Christian send me an email. I may be a little sceptical but I am open to hope and persuasion.
Great cover to cover.......2000-01-28
This story goes from childhood crime to living through the hard times of Uganda, Africa to involvement with the paramilitaries of Northern Ireland. This story never boggs down and was the most inspirational biography that I have read in recent times.
A "real life miracle" story everyone should read........2000-01-27
This is the true story of James Reed; a loser, alcoholic, drug addict, thief, and a basic degenerate. Then, in a twist of fate, he is snatched from the pit of hell by the saving grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.
This is, by far, a more realistic presentation of a life completely turned around that I have had the pleasure to have read. The author, Noel Davidson, is from Ireland and has a unique writing style that keeps you wanting for more. And there is plenty more here to keep you going. Noel writes like a person thinks so it is an easy, enjoyable, adventurous read. And the Lord takes takes this new life and casts James into the one of the greatest adventure stories since the likes of Moses, King David, or the apostles themselves.
This is a must read for all who know the Lord - and definite must read for those who want to know what the Lord could do with the life of one who does not yet know the Lord.
I could not put it down. It's a keeper.

Book Description
Author Henry Yu, president of Yuin University, chronicles the sinister victimization of his school in this searing expose. Yuin University, once the top school in the United States in the field of acupuncture and oriental medicine, was beaten into virtual anonymity by a corrupt state regulatory commission. Racial prejudice and professional rivalry yanked Yuin from its brilliant past into a present that could only be described as nightmarish.
Yu recounts the events that led to the state's denial of accreditation for the university, and the events that continue to prevent the school from recapturing its former glory. Proven by his persistence to fight for the preservation of ethical behavior in the bureacracy of the educational system, Yu is determined that Yuin University will "like the smoldering wick, arise from the haze."

A Bruised Reed - Copyright In the Library Reviews.......2003-08-05
A moving historical fiction, A BRUISED REED by Helen Stephenson Spaulding is the story of Lucey Hanks, grandmother of Abraham Lincoln. The novel opens with Lucey telling Tommie Childerson of her pregnancy. He refuses to marry her and even suggests she get rid of "it". She emphatically refuses to get rid of her baby and declares she will raise the baby by herself.
Unfortunately, Lucey miscalculates the strength of her father's anger. A deacon in the local church, he disowns her, publicly declaring her a whore and a sinner. Hurt and angered by her father's actions, Lucey turns her back on God, proclaiming she will not serve such a cruel, uncaring, and unloving God.
Her journey from a stubborn, defiant, unbelieving, single mother into a dedicated, devout Christian wife and mother was entrancing. Ms. Spaulding immerses her readers into Lucey's world. The descriptions, details, and dialogue are authentic to the period. Emotionally touching, A BRUISED REED shouldn't be missed.
