Book Description
Stand amid soaring Douglas fir in the great hall of Glacier Park Lodge or sit in the setting sun and gaze into the Grand Canyon at El Tovar. This beautiful gift book will transport you to the majestic lodges of our national parks to relive the glory of past vacations or plan adventures anew. This book and the PBS television series of the same title (to air in spring 2002) take armchair travelers into these architectural wonders and explore the surrounding natural beauty of our national parks. Lodges, wildlife, and stunning vistas are showcased in 175 full-color photographs, along with historical documents from the PBS series. In his introduction, Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, offers a call to preserve this national heritage, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book go toward the rehabilitation of these magnificent buildings.
Customer Reviews:
Glorious photographs will take you there!.......2006-08-06
This book features amazing photos of the Great Lodges along with brief histories of the parks, locations, and lodges themselves. Wonderful illustrations and blue-print depictions are also included. Great gift idea or coffee table book! Will make you long for more travel time!
Glorious Photos, Wonderful Book.......2003-02-08
We purchased this book as a thank-you gift for friends, and we were *delighted* with the quality and beauty of it. Truly glorious photos, not a ton of information but enough, and makes a spectacular gift. Highly recommended.
Here's a way to see America.......2002-04-30
What a treat to find Great Lodges of the National Parks! Not only is the book full of lucious color photographs of the lodges (both inside and out and every season), but historic images and architectural drawings that make you really appreciate the simple fact that they were built in the first place. You also get the full history along with a sense of what the lodges are like today written in a very accessible style. I know people who are trying to go to all of the lodges in Christine Barnes' books. I plan on beginning this summer. (The book also includes Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood National Forest outside of Portland.)
Beautiful book with spectacular pictures!.......2002-03-30
This is a gorgeous book.
It has 192 pages--loaded with lovely glossy pictures.
Not all of these lodges, however, are located in the national parks.Timberline Lodge is in a national forest and Oregon Caves Chateau is located at a national monument.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking. Historical pictures as well as present day pictures are located in the book.
This book is VERY similar to the Great Lodges of the West book (also by Christine Barnes). Some of the EXACT same pictures that are in the Great Lodges of the West book are in this book!
But this book adds more pictures.
This one has more pages (as compared to 136 pages) and this one has more pictures. Also covered in this one is Belton Chalet and Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (which the other book doesn't cover in full detail).
16 lodges are featured:
1) Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming)
2) The Ahwahnee (Yosemite National Park- California)
3) Paradise Inn (Mount Rainier National Park, Washington)
4) Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood National Forest- Oregon)
5) Oregon Caves Chateau (Oregon Caves National Monument-Oregon)
6) Crater Lake Lodge (Crater Lake National Park-Oregon)
7) El Tovar (Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim)
8) Zion Park Lodge (Zion National Park)
9) Bryce Canyon Lodge (Bryce Canyon National Park)
10) Grand Canyon Lodge (Grand Canyon National Park- North Rim)
11) Glacier Park Lodge (Glacier National Park- Montana)
12) Belton Chalet (Glacier National Park)
13) Lake McDonald Lodge (Glacier National Park)
14) Many Glacier Hotel (Glacier National Park)
15) Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (Glacier National Park)
16) Prince of Wales Hotel (Waterton Lakes National Park,
Alberta, Canada)
Also in the front and back is a map that shows where these lodges are located. In the back are Preservation Resources and Travelers' Resources (websites, reservation information, etc...)
Although I didn't know that this book would be so similar to the Great Lodges of the West book--(it's just a bigger version), I do not regret buying it. I have them both and the pictures are mesmerizing.

Microwaved Pressed Flowers, Vol. 8: New Techniques for Brilliant Pressed Flowers (Microwaved Pressed Flowers)
ASIN: 0823031497 |
Book Description
Since the beginning of time, artists have looked to nature for inspiration. They have sketched its shapes, admired its colors, painted its textures, and copied its patterns. Natural Impressions offers a unique way to cultivate creativity by making prints directly from natural objects. In this innovative book, author and crafter Carolyn Dahl demonstrates how printing with a natural material-covering it with a medium and pressing it to a surface-allows artists to see and appreciate exquisite, often-overlooked details and make physical contact with the earth that sustains us. Natural Impressions begins with practical guidance on collecting materials and objects, along with basic instructions for making a successful nature print. Divided into three sections-leaves, flowers, and fish-the book clearly demonstrates a variety of techniques using an array of mediums; for example, paints/pigments, bleach, collage, markers, textile paints, and even rubber stamps. Plus, a special section details how nature prints can meet today's technology with photocopying and computer manipulation. Carolyn Dahl mesmerizes readers with enchanting, emotional stories and observations about nature. She helps them realize the myriad ways nature impacts the creative spirit, and inspires them with dozens of inventive paper and fabric projects featuring remarkable nature prints. Whether one is a beginning artist or an experienced veteran, the techniques in Natural Impressions can be done successfully by anyone-and are sure to foster a deeper, more intimate relationship with nature.

Great Variety.......2007-03-14
The great variety of projects shown makes this a good book to add to my library.
My Review .......2006-11-04
I love the book. It contains a lot of very interesting and new to me information. I have enjoyed trying the ideas and information given in the book.
Natural Impressions.......2006-07-11
It is a great book. I'm very happy to have it. A lot of good ideas.
Wonderful.......2005-08-06
I loved this book. My kids and I have already made fish print tee-shirts, but a serious artist would also find a lot of useful stuff in here. I can't wait to try the moonlit leaves project.
Let Nature Be Your Teacher.......2005-06-30
This has become one of my favorite books; I have shared it with artists and non-artists alike, who all were rejuvenated by the author's poetic, spiritual, and inspirational approach to nature. Unlike another reviewer, I was glad that the author's direct, visceral, and lyrical interaction with her subject avoided direct references to God or an "intelligent designer"--this simply is not germane to her purpose in this gem of a book. Ironically, her meditations on her forays into the natural world teach us, nonetheless, that nature herself can inspire the highest spiritual and moral behaviors if we only choose to slow down, observe, respect, and listen to her wisdom.

Dreaming in Pictures: The Photography of Lewis Carroll

Book Description
Known as the "greatest pictorialist of her day," Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) came to photography late in life, bringing years of literary and artistic experience to what was still a relatively new medium. She believed the camera was a tool of expression and revolved to reconcile
traditional art content with modern forms of expression. The first volume in the In Focus series to examine the work of a nineteenth-century photographer, this beautiful volume examines Cameron's passion for the "divine art" and her "deeply seated love of the beautiful" that are clearly revealed by
her compelling pictures. The J. Paul Getty Museum's collection of Cameron photographs consists of 298 prints. Approximately fifty of them are presented here. The plates are accompanied by commentaries written by Julian Cox, assistant curator of photographs. Along with Judy Dater, David Featherstone,
Joanne Lukitsch, Weston Naef, Pamela Roberts, and Robert Woof, he participated in a colloquium on Cameron, an edited transcript of which is included here along with a chronology of Cameron's life.

Dreamworld.......2007-08-07
It was a pleasant surprise to get to know this 19th century photographer. The images are beautiful and have a romantic dreamlike atmosphere that somehow recall pre-raphaelite paintings. The edition is well done and texts suit well the exquisite photographs.

An insight into the secluded world of the Forbidden City.......2001-10-02
I rather enjoyed this biography on Reginald Johnston. Despite what the other reviewer has said (quite funny), I doubt very much that Johnston would have been able to "mandhandle Pu Yi" as he must have been closely supervised by his minders, some of whom were eunuchs and may have had similar tendencies.
An uninteresting man, with ambiguous tendencies, thrust into the limelight just by rubbing shoulders with the last Emperor, Johnston did write a couple of travel books on China which are probably his more enduring legacy
Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston...the Fleming Fag.......2000-06-21
If you want to find out what kind of a brainwashing, low down, good for nothing person Reginald Johnston is like, then you need to read this book. This old cockraoch constantly used the kid emperor for his own needs. Johnston taught the young emperor about homosexuality as Johnston was a homosexual. Johnston should go down in history for a child molester and thief of children.

Customer Reviews:
Broad & insightful.......2007-08-11
Opening with a tour-de-force of insightful simplicity, Beyond The Goal goes on to explore many aspects of business activity with Dr. Goldratt's custom disciplined thinking. Though I have not come through his excellent speaking with a clear understanding of the Theory Of Constraints, I heard many other ideas and had a pleasant time doing so. He covers a straight-forward process for implementing TOC within an hesitant organisation, as well as providing a brilliant technique for validating any effort to apply new technology in business.
A clear explanation.......2007-05-14
This e-book reminds us Goldratt's literary style: clear, brief and precise.
After reading/listening to this lecture, I fell like I could run any facility in the world far better than the current management does.
This author delivers such a clear vision that by the moment we close the book we could train an audience on this subject.
Excellent value.......2007-03-21
This is my first, but won't be my last, experience with Coach in a Box. Dr. G. is in his usual form (obviously speaking to a live audience) but this material, in this form, is probably not for those uninitiated to TOC. An outstanding supplement to William Dettmer's Systems book on TOC.
Sensational.......2006-03-20
A straight forward explination of this theory. This CD has really helped me to fully understand the power of his theories and has explained to me how this can be implemented into a business. If your interested in improving your business and your efficiencies this is a must hear.
Enlightment to TOC.......2006-03-11
In the goal we saw that there was a light at the end of the tunnel, or a bright blue sky above the "dark clouds of reality". Yet, I fully agree with those that have said that the explanations on TOC are clearer on the works of Dr. Goldratt's disciples.
But then you listen to this wonderful work and then you understand the philosophy behind TOC. He is inquisitive on the current reality to the point where you have to think hard, again and again to see the real constrains come about. No, its not phylosophy of science, because when you are just discerning through the clouds of reality, he hits you with the "show me the money!?!?", why are we even thinking this way if we are not going to get the benefits??!! and Im only in cd number 3 !!!
For those of you who have had some exposure to TOC and believe it can make a difference, I would recommended this cd book.

The Self-Coached Climber: The Guide to Movement Training Performance
ASIN: 159184004X
Release Date: 2003-10-23 |
Book Description
World-class rock climber Todd Skinner is also one of today's most sought-after motivational speakers for business audiences. Whenever he describes his history-making sixty-day free climb of the 20,500-foot Trango Tower in the Karakoram Himalayas (shown on the jacket), people are in awe of his stamina, skill, ambition, and determination. They are also eager to apply his lessons in their professional and personal lives.
Skinner argues that everyone has a mountain to climb, whether it's meeting your annual sales target or launching a new product or getting your department to improve its teamwork. And he stresses that you should set your goals even higher than you normally would, and constantly look beyond the current summit to the next one. For instance, instead of aiming for 10 percent revenue growth, go after a seemingly impossible 50 percent target, and then think of new ways to get there.
In both rock climbing and business, you must define your exact mission, assemble the right team, make the critical transition from preparation to action, have courage when crossing difficult terrain, and weather the storms well. Skinner offers fresh insights into all of these topics and explains principles such as:
* how you think is more important than what you know
* pick teammates for what they will do, not what they have already done
* make decisions in answer to the mountain
* fall toward the summit
* see each challenge as part of a bigger picture, your lifelong ascent
Beyond the Summit presents fresh and inspiring advice on leadership, teamwork, and decision-making skills, combined with an epic adventure tale.
Customer Reviews:
Beyond the Summit: Setting and Surpassing Extraordinary Business Goals.......2007-02-22
I have no interest whatsoever in mountain climbing! Yet, I was fascinated with this "cliff hanger!" Most importantly, I had much to learn from it. The lessons I learned from Mr. Skinner's book about mountain climbing are equally relavant to obtaining any life goal, from raising good children to writing a book. Everyone can benefit from this read.
Can Change Your Thinking.......2004-04-15
Todd Skinner has written a book that invites you to change how you think about challenges and obstacles. Especially pertinent were his specifics such as considering "measuring your progress from where you are to the summit" instead of where you began. There are several "aha" moments to be found in Beyond the Summit that do not ask you to understand a complex model of management or leadership, that are quite profound and immediately useful. Practical and inspirational.
Powerful, challenging, inspiring.......2004-03-29
Is there a better metaphor for success in your endeavors than mountain climbing? So if you want the ultimate in success why not study the ultimate in mountain climbing. The lessons that Todd Skinner brings down from the summit are striking, challenging and forcefully introspective. Having read "Beyond the Summit" I found myself frequently putting the book down long enough to ask myself where I might find my personal 'first ascension.' An incredible book with a powerful story and life-changing lessons.
Fantastic.......2004-01-23
Having just heard Todd speak, I must say, he is by far one of the most influential people I have ever heard in person.
A Refreshing Read.......2004-01-20
I'm one of the lucky people who have heard Todd Skinner present "Beyond the Summit." I wondered how his presentation would translate into written form. What I found when I read "Beyond the Summit," was an elegant, down to earth, kinda zen-like model on how to fully live a life - or conduct a business ascent. I found the philosophy inspiring and practical and the story as fascinating as the first time I heard it. This will be a book that I read at the beginning of each year to keep me on the right path.

A Journey into the Tao.......2007-10-11
This is another book that I read over and over again. It always has something new to say to me depending on where I am when I read it. It covers the blossoming of a master in the martial arts from overbearing neophyte to true master. It explores the Tao and proper principles in training, and contains one of my favorite quotes. "Your quest is not for quantity of production. Your quest, my quest, the martial-arts quest is for quality of experience."
Very Special Quality Reading.......2006-05-25
Master Tri was one of the kindest living beings that I've ever known...a true Master with timeless wisdom found in his words/sharings. He will always be greatly remembered and missed. I've done a painting in memory of him and all of the other Great Masters before him, that I've titled "Spirit of Shaolin" which can be seen at one of my online galleries at: DaelArt.com Dael
The best book on what it means to train martial arts, and to be a human........2006-02-10
5 stars isnt enough.
This is one of those rare books that you can read 1000 times and on the 1001st read you would still get more out of it.
This book can easily be used as a pocket companion throughout your entire life to help you in more ways than i have room to write in a little review.
Also, this book has really helped me to see more clearly as to what my purpose in life is.
I hope it will do the same for you. Na Mo A Mi To Fo
When the student is ready, the book will appear.......2004-09-15
I got this book a few years ago and didn't think much of it because I couldn't understand it. Now, after a few years of Tai Chi and meditation, I'm starting to understand it. A great book, indeed! I'm planning to read his next book.
lessons through fables.......2000-07-26
This short read, told as a fable, is broken down into chapters, each expounding on an idea the book wishes to delve into with greater detail. The relationship between a martial arts master and his student is one of the most profound possible, and this book guides the reader/student into a more profound understanding of the teacher/student dynamic. The end result is, or should be, that the student becomes the master, and that the cycle of learning and growth between master and student is eternal and self-renewing.
There is one narrative quirk that should not affect the power of the lessons contained herein, but does weaken the book a bit from a writer's point of view. Otherwise, this is a valuable book, one that addresses the key relationship between master & student. In the West, it is common for students to not take their masters as seriously as they should, and for masters to occaisonally show less responsibility and accountability than they should. This short volume shows what a balanced, committed disciple/master relationship might look like.
Recommended.

Book Description
There are many challenges to be faced in contemporary society including the stresses of everyday living in the technological age and changes in patterns of employment and family life. Depression is being experienced in "epidemic" proportions in many Western communities, and in particular amongst young people. The search for effective ways to reverse this trend has resulted in a significant shift in psychological approach from a focus on helplessness and pathology to a more positive orientation that emphasises health and well-being. This volume brings together leading researchers in the field of stress and coping to consider ways in which coping research contributes to our understanding of how people in different sectors of life meet goals and challenges. It provides a synthesis of different but compatible theoretical models that have been developed in the field of stress and coping and provides a way forward beyond the traditional stress and coping paradigms The emergent model is able to be used to assess a wide range of issues in the stress and coping domain. Written to be accessible to students and researchers in social, educational, and health psychology, this will be a valuable and important addition to the literature.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A186004. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Department of Defense has determined that Outsourcing and Privatization is key to reducing operating costs and subsequently providing the fiscal dollars necessary to modernize the U.S. Armed Forces. In an effort to achieve this goal, the DoD has mandated that the Air Force study at least 5% of its manning positions for possible conversion to contract. This mandate effects over 200,000 positions throughout the department. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular, Number A-76, Performance Of Commercial Activities dictates the process used to study the appropriateness of these conversions. This thesis explores the usefulness and applicability of this process, commonly referred to as A-76. More specifically, this researcher's goal is to determine if the current process is the most effective and efficient way to accomplish the goals of reducing the Department of Defense operating costs. This thesis explores recent A-76 studies and other strategic and competitive sourcing issues to determine how to drive down cost most effectively.
