Book Description

Nate Berkus, regular contributor on The Oprah Winfrey Show, contributing editor of O, The Oprah Magazine, and nationally renowned decorator, has created a book inspired by his belief that everyone should love the way they live. This step-by-step guide to achieving your own beautiful rooms is based on Nates signature style and innovative approach to design. As a small boy, Nate could often be found rearranging his room (as well as helping his mother and the other neighborhood mothers rearrange theirs). Throughout the years his passion continued to grow, and soon Nate was heading his own award-winning firm with an elite roster of clients. But it was Oprah Winfrey who gave Nate the chance of a lifetimethe opportunity to go into millions of homes around the world and join her mission to help people live their best lives. It has been a dream come true that has absolutely changed my life, explains Berkus. Not only has working with Oprah helped me redefine my own vision and purposebut she continues to challenge me to use my own life to help others live better. And there is nothing that makes me happier or more grateful than to be a part of that. As Oprah always says, your home should be a reflection of who you truly are. Nate says, no matter how much money you have, he believes that is so very true. I am honored to share my love of design to help everyone make that dream real for themselves with this book.

2 out of 5 stars Blah!.......2007-03-08

I was hoping for something a little more informative. Nate doesn't have a dagree in design, and obviously not one in writting a book on it either... Sorry nate. He has good concepts, and knows what should be included in good design. Each room should have history to it, it should tell a story. So pretty much i just summed it up for you in one sentance. now you don't have to buy the book. I am a tough critic tho, because i am an interior design student...

4 out of 5 stars Inspirations for Decorating.......2007-03-07

I wasn't familiar with Berkus from TV, but love decorating books. Here he shows rooms with before and after photos while describing the challenge and his solutions for it. Each chapter has some questions to help you define what you want your room to feel like and how it should function. I liked the little features like tips for arranging art or the Easy Updates (room changes that could be done in an hour or a day).
Here are the chapter headings:
Getting started : inspirations
At home with color
Something for everyone : family rooms
Living large : small spaces
The right recipe : kitchens
Rest and relaxation : bedrooms
The ultimate retreat : bathrooms
Contain yourself : organizing.

4 out of 5 stars I like the pictures!.......2007-02-09

In retrospect, I'm not sure I would have purchased this book. It's full of good ideas and I enjoyed the pictures, but once I was finished reading it....
If you can get a good price on this, go for it. Otherwise you might consider the library.
But all in all, a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Needs a Little Nate in Their Homes.......2007-01-15

I'm not a decorator. I don't have an eye for colors and what matches and what doesn't. I must admit that every home that I've had, my mother has decorated for me. Nate Berkus and his book have allowed me to grow up and begin to decorate my house on my own. His ideas are so simple, but with an enormous impact. He details every aspect of home decorating to include painting as well as how to decorate mantels, bookshelves, and other places that sometimes aren't considered in home decorating. The pictures are very beautiful and full of color. If you are a fan of Oprah and especially Nate, then this book is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Love it ! .......2007-01-04

I love Nate and his style and also love this book! It's like having Nate's advice at hand 24/7, right in your own home. If you're interested in interior design and want to make your home more stylish and unique, this book will help you do just that!

    Book Description

Using international examples, the author shows that most societies preserve objects of special value and meaning, though they may not be easily recognizable as "museums" to an outsider. Christina Kreps advocates the liberation of culture from the management regimes of Eurocentric museology, and the restoration of people's rights to the control and management of their own cultural heritage. This book will expand the definition of the field and demonstrate that there is not one universal museology, but many.

Odd Jobs Portraits of Unusual Occupations by Nancy Rica Schiff Who blows the bugle at the Kentucky Derby? Who dusts the dinosaur bones at the Smithsonian? Who sniffs dog breath for a living? Who measures the breasts of real models? ODD JOBS introduces you to the real people who perform these truly peculiar jobs. In 65 intimate portraits, photo essayist Nancy Rica Schiff captures the personalities and occupations of these oddball professionals, providing a short profile of each. A 20-year photography veteran, Schiff has spent the better half of that time discovering the behind-the-scenes people who do what others can't (or won't) do. No one can say that America isn't the home of the free, the brave, and the quirky, who will do almost anything to make an honest buck.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun Book!.......2007-05-04

This is a really fun book and it will open your eyes to some of the crazy occupations out there. If you like it, check out "Odd Jobs: 101 Ways to Make an Extra Buck" -- it details good, bad, and really bizarre jobs (like worm farmer) that virtually anyone can get. Either of these books make great graduation gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining page turner.......2006-12-02

When I spotted this book on the shelf, I immediately knew that I had to buy it. It contains a series of photographs of people performing unusual jobs along with a brief description of the job and the person. The cover photo is of odor judge Betty Lyons sniffing the armpit of a man. That photo definitely qualifies as an attention grabber. Her job is to test the efficacy of deodorant.
Other jobs depicted in the book are:

*) Dinosaur duster, he dusts the dinosaur bones in a museum.
*) Mohel, a man who circumcises male Jewish babies.
      *) Barbie's dress designer.
*) Solfeggist, a person who writes down the notes of a musical composition while listening to it.
*) Diener, a person who prepares bodies for autopsies.
*) Duckmaster, a man who walks a small flock of ducks from their home on the roof of a hotel to the fountain where they spend their day.
*) The headmistress of a school for men who want to cross-dress.
*) The keeper of professional hockey's Stanley Cup.

I strongly recommend this book for light reading. I started it and couldn't put it down until I finished it.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite = Male Tampon Tester.......2006-06-10

This book is exactly as the title says...odd. Don't be deterred by the bizarre picture on the front, that's actual what caused me to pick up this book in the first place! It's great for sparking amusing conversations. It's a great book to keep in your bag to read when you have a few spare minutes waiting for the bus, or whatever. It's also a great book to flip through when you see it at the library or in a book store.

This is a humourous book...it'd make an interesting graduation gift, for sure!

4 out of 5 stars Black and White Photography is great........2005-09-21

I bought this for my husband who appreciates black and white photography. His first comment was how good the photography is. Also good for some chuckles.

4 out of 5 stars And you think *your* job was bad!.......2004-12-05

While waiting for my wife to browse quilting books at Powell's book store, I wandered down an aisle and breezed through an entertaining book that caught my eye... Odd Jobs: Portraits Of Unusual Occupations by Nancy Rica Schiff.

Schiff came across a person with an unusual job one day... the official timekeeper at a horse race track. She then started wondering about other "unusual" jobs that people have, and set out to find those jobs and photograph the people who do them. The result is this book. It's not large, only 152 pages. The format is a set of opposite pages for each job. The description of the job and person is on the left, along with a picture of the job and person on the right. And we're talking some really unusual jobs... How about a condom tester held by a lady who is definitely old enough to be your grandmother? A person who milks venom from snakes. A mortuary beautician who prepares bodies for their "final viewing". Dog walker, bull inseminator, tampon tester... all things that need to be done, but you probably don't really think about (or *want* to think about) the people or skills it takes to do them.

So if you're feeling that your job is horrible and you'd like to do something different, take 15 minutes or so and glance through this book. You'll either come back with some new employment possibilities or figure out that your job isn't so bad after all!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Geniuses of our time..........2006-11-10

Alan Moore is one of the greatest writers of our time. With Comic book titles, graphic novels, book titles and movies under his belt, it can easily be said that he will go down in history as one of the greats. Now, inside this volume, Alan Moore's friends, co-workers, associates and confidants give their side of what they feel Alan Moore represents to them. How many people have been inspired to create their life's work because of him? How has he influenced other outstanding authors? What kind of person is he and does he realy practice magick? All of these questions and more are addressed in this excellently penned and highly Visual edition of "Alan Moore: Portrait of an Extraordinary Gentleman" by Spencer Millidge. This one is definately a keeper!!!

5 out of 5 stars a contributing author comments: notes from Link Yaco.......2005-12-12

This was a delightful and strange experience for me. The editor, Gary Spencer Millidge, has a deserved cult following for his charmingly weird STRANGEHAVEN comic. I believe we exchanged email once, he in Britain, I in New York. My main contact was with THE SMOKY MAN!

Smoky is a fantastic soul who lives in Sardinia. Smoky is his nickname due to some pun on Turkish tabacco and his name, I believe.

In poetic English, which sadly, has been improving over the years, Smoky had originally asked me to contribute to his website ULTRAZINE. If you haven't seen this bilingual site, you must. I believe I wrote two or three. And each was translated into Italian. I have to admit that being translated was an exciting experience for me. Even more exciting was Smoky apologetic payment for my work: 10 lbs. of Italian comics! Yes, he mailed me a big beautiful STACK of comics. And they were GREAT. Oh, just wonderful. That was the first time I ever saw DYLAN DOG. Wow and double-wow.

Then Smoky began a special Alan Moore tribute issue of Ultrazine. The list of contributors grew rapidly. Soon major players were jumping on board. AND AN IDEA FLICKERED.

...or at least that is how I understood the genesis of the project, in my interpretation of Smoky enthusiastic poetic English.

I think I had been the only English-language writer on the project at first, but THAT soon changed! MAN, did it change!
But Smoky was a gentleman and included me in the project even tho my one-book authorship dimmed in the shadow of these giants.
Bless Smoky. And bless Gary, who by then had graciously taken on the Herculean task of editing the project. Without him etc.

And the result is a polished lovely book that I am truly proud to be part of.

It was a fantastic experience that I shall treasure to the very end of my journey.

3 out of 5 stars A fair tribute, worth it for some..........2004-07-22

...but not for others. I do feel that the book was a little too long--a few too many single page tributes that just seemed the same ("I first read Alan Moore when I...;" "Alan Moore changed the way I...;" etc., etc.). I feel like this book would have been a better service if the articles had been kept down to people with some legitimate statement on Moore's work or their personal involvement. An excellent example of this is Steve Bissette's essay in which he outlines his dealings with Moore from the Swamp Thing run, on through Taboo, into their falling out over a hornets' nest of problems in the early nineties. The article is not entirely "in tribute," but it does good service to the fans by being informative on a subject frought with rumor and speculation. I'm sure Moore was probably surprised, if not chagrined, to read it.

The Dave Sim article is excellent (I'm working on reading that right now as a matter of fact). It's daunting but highly rewarding: Sim is easily the most undervalued comics interviewer, for a multiplicity of reasons that aren't worth going into here. The more scholastic articles by Jose Alaniz, in my book you can take them or leave them. There doesn't seem to be much appreciable about what he's written about that a cursory reading of the same texts (especially the "Best of all Tailors" chapter of From Hell) couldn't provide. I'm sure they're of some value to someone, but that doesn't really include me.

Also, the book is co-produced by Italian, English and American people/companies, hence the inclusion of a lot of nameless Italian artists (and a couple of writers). I'm sure that's of massive significance to the Italian comics community, but it's pretty far removed from everywhere else. Still, it doesn't muddle up the book too much...and the pictures are nice...

Altogether, I would neither characterize the book as entirely without merit, save the interviews, nor would I characterize it as a 100% tour de force production. It's a good book for hardcore Moore fans (or wanna-be hardcore fans, with a decent but incomplete bibliography in the back). My advice, if you don't have a copy of Watchmen (which you SHOULD), From Hell, V for Vendetta, and a good Swamp Thing or two, buy those first and then enjoy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Inconsequential tribute to a great writer.......2003-10-17

This is a strange book. On the one hand, it's packed with art from a long list of talented illustrators. On the other, I don't know who these illustrators are; they all seem to be European. So, although I like their artwork, the fact that they are doing two-page tributes to Alan Moore means nothing to me.

And then there's the text. If the text isn't an interview with Alan Moore, it's not worth reading. 99% of it is just forgettable. There are three essays by one person (who shall remain nameless) that are memorable because they are so horrible. These essays are 'post modern' --- which means that they are full of silly jargon and obscure references to Derrida and that sort of thing. If you don't know what post-modern writing is, consider yourself blessed.

The one really worthwile part of the book is at the end, in an exchange of letters between the cranky Canadian cartoonist, Dave Sim, and Alan Moore. Moore takes the time to describe why he's interested in occultism and how his research in the last ten years has enriched his life. It's a unique story from a brilliant man. He seems to be spelunking his own psyche and then writing about his discoveries.

I can't recommend this book. It looks nice and the end is good, but it's not really worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Happy birthday Mr. Moore.......2003-07-08

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the funniest and most beautiful tribute ever made to an author! I have never seen anything like this in centuries! I think that the basic idea of the whole project is strongly related with being an Alan Moore fan, which is a thing that a lot of the autohrs involved in the book share. But there's more to it: that means that even though every contribution is not perfect, neat and amazing, love, respect and passion are always granted in every inch of this work. Every artist/writer that has participated has done its best, even in a simple way, to say: Happy birthday Mr. Moore.

If you're expecting me to cite my favourite contributions you are wrong: too many and too beautiful, and right now I can only remeber one of those that Moore will appreciate more: Will Eisner's one!

In a few words: a must-read for all Moore's fan over the globe, buy it and you won't be disappointed.

P.S.: I was almost forgetting to say that in the end of the volume there is a complete bibliography, which can be considered a stand-alone motivation to buy it.

      Book Description

Christa McAuliffe's name is deeply entrenched in American history as the teacher who died when the Challenger exploded in January 1986. Innovative and devoted to her profession, Christa brought to her own life and to her students the joy and excitement of learning, exploration, and accomplishment. Her integrity and love of life endeared her to people both before and during her NASA training. Honest, direct, and outspoken, she did not hesitate to speak out on behalf of the constituency she felt she had been selected to represent: American public schoolteachers and the children in their classrooms.

It is important to know that Christa's dreams did not die with her. Following the disaster many foundations, institutions, and learning centers were set up to honor the Challenger crew. Craters on the moon and even asteroids have been named in their memory. Teacher in Space explores and celebrates Christa's life and legacy and suggests that her goals of involving and educating children are being fulfilled even today.

      3 out of 5 stars "Imagine a history teacher making history!"---Christa McAuliffe.......2007-03-11

I've read several books on Teacher in Space Christa McAuliffe and the Challenger tragedy and bought this book because the reviews described it as focusing on the Teacher in Space program. I am mostly interested in how the program came about, how it was announced and promoted, the application process, the selection process, and the training. The book certainly covers those areas but not in as much depth as I hoped. Much of the book is on the life of McAuliffe which is thoroughly covered in Robert T. Hohler's excellent biography "I Touch the Future..." While just over 100 pages with very wide margins, Burgess' work does offer information as well as a more comprehensive look into certain areas than I've found in other books which makes it definitely worthwhile to anyone interested in McAuliffe, Challenger, and the Teacher in Space program.

Burgess describes the lessons McAuliffe was planning to teach in space better than any book I've read so far. This information is found in the chapter "Learning the Ropes." One of the demonstrations involved a screwdriver to show that, in space, the weightless astronaut would turn instead of the screw unless anchored. As to the programs to send civilians into space, Burgess covers the incomplete plans of choosing a journalist to go into space (Walter Cronkite was one of the forty finalists) more thoroughly than elsewhere. While Hohler's book is a better source on the application and selection process of the Teacher in Space candidates, Burgess offers several color photos of the ten finalists I have not seen anywhere else.

Finally, with a publishing date of 2000, Burgess has the benefit of hindsight that most of the other books on Challenger do not have. He gives a brief update on Christa's husband and back-up Teacher-in-Space, Barbara Morgan. I had always thought programs to send civilians into space of any walks of life died with Challenger, but the Teacher in Space program has continued with Morgan taking the lead. She actually completed astronaut training in 1999 with an expectation that she would enter space as an "educator mission specialist." This book was completed before the Columbia disaster, so Burgess sounded very optimistic about her chances. Although delayed, fortunately, Morgan got the chance to live her dream on the space shuttle Endeavour. The book includes a section of color photos, an interesting chapter on "Space Objects Named for the Seven Challenger Astronauts," and a forward by Christa's mother Grace Corrigan.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Extremely Well Researched.......2002-07-20

While much has been written about the engineering and management decisions that lead up to Challenger explosion, the mission, the Challenger crew and the whole Teacher in Space Program have received much less attention. In this book, the author, Colin Burgess, only devotes a few pages to the accident and focuses primarily on the teacher in space program, Christa McAuliffe, her teaching and NASA experiences and of course the aftermath of the accident. Since the book was written well close to fifteen years after the accident, it avoids much of the sadness, anger and the like which dominated many of the early works on this subject. As a result, the author gives us a wonderful book about the life and times of Christa McAuliffe and the Teacher in Space Program. There is also closing chapter on the next Teacher in Space Candidate, Barbara Morgan, who should fly sometime this decade.

As someone who lives across the street from the Johnson Space Center (JSC), it is quite obvious to me that the author spent a considerable amount of time researching her life and experiences at JSC, since all of the places, buildings, etc., are named correctly (using the names in 1986), located in their proper places and the astronaut training she received is as it should be. In other words, not only are you getting a wonderful well written book, it is also well researched.

One final thing to add, the book contains 32 pages of color pictures and all royalties from the book go to the Christa McAuliffe Fund.

5 out of 5 stars A moving and worthy tribute to a fascinating individual..........2000-10-30

This is not the first book written about Christa McAuliffe- but it may well be considered the last word on her. Many previous books have concentrated on the technical aspects of the Challenger explosion that took her life. Others were written about her as a person, but were written so close to the time of the disaster that it was hard for them to be objective and see her life and achievements in their entirety. With the passage of time, it has been possible to set the Teacher In Space Program and Christa's life in their true historical context, and Colin Burgess has here done an admirable job of doing so. The politically-inspired events that led to a teacher being offered a seat on a spacecraft formerly reserved for those with piloting or science tasks to undertake are outlined by Burgess with objectivity and clarity. But what comes through more than anything from this book is the remarkable strength of personality that McAuliffe had, making her the perfect person for a space flight, and how that strength has meant that, even after her death, her plans for space education have gone ahead. It seems that her mission to educate and inspire people to dream about spaceflight and act on those dreams was fulfilled even though she never made it into space. Burgess, having already authored an important body of spaceflight books, has added a work guaranteed to inspire and motivate anyone.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2000-09-06

As a friend of Colin's, I normally would disqualify myself from reviewing one of his books but I feel that I had to comment on this book.

Colin has done a great job of cutting through the usual American sentimentality whenever the Challenger crew are mentioned and has done a great job in telling us about Christa. However, the book is not just about Christa. The ill fated Teacher in Space program is described in detail as is the launch and the short flight of the Challenger shuttle.

A worthy addition to any space library. Teenagers in particular will like this book.

An easy to read and interesting account of Gretzky's career. He is truly a hero and this book really tries to capture his spirit. This book is appropriate for hockey lovers of all ages - I bought it for my 11 year old son and found myself enjoying it immensely. The photos are fantastic and there are many of them. This book is great for any hockey player or coach and ours is kept on our coffee table.

      Book Description

One of this century's greatest athletes, Wayne Gretzky, The Great One, never failed to enthrall hockey fans with his incredible talent and skill.

It was with bittersweet sadness that the hockey world accepted the retirement of its most beloved player after the 1998-99 season. For the past twenty years, Wayne Gretzky above all has epitomized the toughness, power, and excitement of hockey. A class act, admired by teammates and foes alike, holder of numerous records, and always a consummate sportsman, Gretzky simply defines the game of hockey.

Including more than 120 extraordinary black and white and color photographs, The Great One celebrates Gretzky, from his early days as Brantford, Ontario's whiz kid, all the way to his Stanley Cup glories. The Great One includes a compilation of number ninety-nine's records of achievement and game-by-game statistics for his two decades of excellence.

Expertly written and researched by hockey historian Andrew Podnieks, the book also includes rare interviews, anecdotes, and little-known facts about Gretzky.

With Wayne Gretzky's retirement, hockey fans everyone mourned the passing of an era. But Gretzky's words and achievements live on in The Great One. There is no better way to remember the career of hockey's most superb and charismatic player.

ANDREW PODNIEKS is the author of many books on hockey, including The Blue and White Book, Portraits of the Game, and Shooting Stars. A hockey historian, photographer, and former creative writing teacher, Andrew lives in Toronto.

Wayne Gretzky obviously is the greatest Hockey
player ever (and Mike Modano is the best we
Amre-I-cans have produced, so far). Though
this book is more show than tell, it still
is a worthy tribute to Gretz. There are others
      better though.

I admire everything about Wayne Gretzky and everything he has done. But i also think Andrew did a poor job reflecting how much wayne gretzky has really accomplished. He is not just a great player , he is a great person. The book lacked certain detail and as the other reviewer said. It probably is only meant for a 3rd grade level =)

I bought this book for my 3rd grade son to write a paper with, and found myself completly engaged in it. For someone who didn't know much about "The Great One", I am now as big a fan as my son! Tells a lot about his younger years and doesn't just focus on the goals. AWESOME

I definitely recommend Wayne Gretzky The Great One, by Joseph Romain and James Duplacey to hockey fans of all ages. I recommend this book because it tells the complete story of one of the best hockey players ever to live, Wayne Gretzky. I usually don't like biographies because they usually just tell about the person's career, but this one was totally different because they also focused on Wayne Gretzky's childhood and family.

The book Wayne Gretzky "The Great One" is about a boy that grows up in Canada. He played in the WHL for the Soo Sault Marie Grey Hounds. Then he got drafted by the Edmonton Oilers. After 4 straight seasons they won a Stanley Cup. Then he got traded to the Los Angeles Kings. When he was in Los Angeles they won 3 Stanley Cups. Then in a few years he got traded to the St. Loius Blues. He didn't like it in St. Loius, so for the first time in his career he was a free agent. Then the New York Rangers wanted him, so he went to New York. In 1998 he retired from New York. He is still living in New York. He has 3 children. I nomiate this book to who ever likes famous athletes.
