Customer Reviews:
Not much on Retail... and pricey for what you get........2007-05-14
A bit dissapointed that there was very little targeted toward Retail, specifically lacking in the areas of shopping center and out parcel development... but the formulas were interesting, and the concepts that were explained... were done so in great detail.
Extremely valuable tool.......2002-10-07
"Land Development Calculations" provides an excellent and innovative strategy for working towards sustainable land use and development. The models for varying land development strategies can assist local government land use decision makers and planners as well as developers determine the carrying capacity of land within realistic thresholds. The accompanying spreadsheets for the development scenarios on the CD-ROM are extremely user friendly and do not place an undue burden on the user by requiring what may be hard to find or to collect data. All of the data required just is typical of what is necessary to make appropriate land development decisions. As a local government planner, I am working towards incorporating the information received from the models in to the zoning and development code as part of the approval process by using it to further assess suitability of the property for the purposes proposed (a zoning consideration required in accordance with the State of Georgia Zoning Procedures Act). I strongly encourage other land planners and developers to read "Land Development Calculations," because of its highly practical and very timely material.
Author Delivers Valuable Techniques and Tools.......2001-10-18
This is a terrificaly valuable technical reference for practitioners who need an efficient method of performing land development calulations. The book and its companion set of spreadsheets enable users to answer two key questions: 1) how much can be built on a given piece of land; or 2) how much land is needed to accommodate a given use? The material is clearly written and well illustrated, especially a series of worksheets leading through the method. Another strength is its comprehensiveness and detail, including all major land-use and micro site conditions.

Jewel and Gem Goop. Make-it-Yourself Stickers. Tornado in a Bottle. Funny Putty. Fruity Lip Gloss. Magic Muck. Snow Globe. Scratch & Sniff Watercolors. Believe it or not, it's possible--easy, in fact!--to make every one of these "wacky, wild, and crazy concoctions" (and 57 more) using common household ingredients. John E. Thomas and Danita Pagel have pulled together the cream of the crop of potions, clays, and all-around weird swills for the pleasure of children and scientists of all ages. Why not introduce the very youngest artist of the house to the world of art with Puddin' Paint? Is there a geologist in the house? Make an Instant Volcano--begins with a fizz, then erupts in a bubbling flow of lava. Time for a bath? Try Bathtub Finger Paints--bathers and the tub will get clean at the same time! These truly amazing concoctions are not mess-free, but they guarantee hours of absorbed, lively, creative fun, and inspiration for a lifetime of imaginative endeavors. Brief scientific explanations would have been a welcome addition, but maybe young readers will be motivated to explore the chemical, physical, and geological origins of these experiments on their own. Adult supervision is recommended for all projects. (Ages 5 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Kids don't care how much money you spend on stuff so don't! Use things in the house to create paints and toys. I also bought one for the playgroup teacher.

I got this book for ideas to do with my 4 year old. The ones that we have tried are a lot of fun and easy to do. They are usually items that you would have in your household anyways or cheep enough to buy specifically for use with this book. Which makes it a bonus.

From the creators of the wildly popular book, The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions comes a second inventive collection of wild potions and crazy crafts--all easily and inexpensively made from common household items. Kids should have a ball creating such wonders as an edible ocean (gummy fish suspended in Jell-O) or a greenhouse grown in a plastic bag. Among the 78 recipes are instructions for making such revolutionary new artistic mediums as whipped cream finger paint, dryer lint clay, and toothpaste putty. Quite a few of the concoctions are edible--chocolate bowls and fruity leather roll-ups sound particularly delicious--while others make great party activities or simple gifts. Almost all the concoctions make a perfect diversion for a bored child on a rainy afternoon. The simple, well-organized instructions make the book easy for kids ages 8 and up to use, though the authors call for adult supervision on all recipes. This is the kind of craft book that's bound to become a family favorite--in time, its large-format black and white pages should be covered with the residue of many hours of messy fun. (Ages 8 to 12) --Marianne Painter

Nothing really great but interesting........2007-07-14
Theree wasn't anything I thought that was really great but a couple things I could use with the kids. If I had a choice I would have not bought it.
Good - but will attract insects!.......2007-06-04
This is a fun concept for a book. However, if you live somewhere warm or plan to do these activities during the summer, many of them contain sugar or some kind of food. It screams "ant magnet" to me and for that reason I have not made anything except the spaghetti sculpture which never dried!
Kid Concoctions.......2007-04-10
Fantastic books. My 7 year old grandaughter loved them! Very unique, easy and fun ideas for kids!

Book Description
Sprawling over 3.5 million square miles, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, the Sahara is a mythical land, enchanting not only for its extreme beauty but also for its complex culture. Wrapping its arid terrain around Africa, this vast desert is shared, and sometimes fought over, by some dozen countries.
Enraptured by the desert's magical light and amazingly diverse terrain-its spectacular dunes, stone fortresses, and Edenic oases-photographer Philippe Bourseiller embarked on the first truly comprehensive photographic exploration of this enormous territory. Here, in 200 compelling images ranging from the white sands of Arguin (Mauritania) to the colorful banks of the Niger river (Mali), from the rock paintings of Tassili n'Ajjer (Algeria) to the lakes of Ennedi (Chad), Bourseiller communicates his powerful experience of the desert. A series of texts by Sahara specialists deepens our understanding of the history, people, and landscape of this fascinating area. An invitation to travel the Sahara, this beautiful book will attract fans of the region, of photography, and of world exploration. AUTHOR BIO: Philippe Bourseiller undertook six annual expeditions to the Sahara for four years, eventually compiling an enormous monograph of images of the world's biggest desert. A regular contributor to magazines and books and the photographer of Abrams' Volcanoes, he has been awarded the prestigious World Press Prize five times.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing images.......2006-06-07
This book is everything you need to look for the Sahara.
Although I admire the book's images (its main treasure), I'd love to see them being entitled and given a little story behind; instead the notes and titles are placed in the end of the book, provided with page numbers. Yet strangely the book has no pagination and that makes it difficult to find the right page after all.
Fantastic! Beautiful!!.......2005-08-07
This book is, by far, the most beautiful book I have ever seen published on any subject. The photographs are stunning. They give a real sense of what the Sahara must be like. All areas and forms the desert takes are included, as well as the people and life of the desert. If you have any interest in the Sahara or any desert at all, this book will only serve to enhance your knowledge and peak your interest! Buy it!

Customer Reviews:
A lot of fun and very funny.......2003-10-20
The cartoons in this book are rioutous. Totally irreverent and a hit with this lifelong Catholic. Highly recommended for those of any faith and even those without ;)
Rina Piccolo: Outrageous cartoons, attack dog mode!.......2002-06-24
Rina Piccolo is a rarity: a woman who sometimes writes cartoons in the mode of male stand-up comics, in the tradition of Lenny Bruce--offbeat outrage. The first strip I ever saw by Rina was a drawing of King Kong atop the Empire State Building, with the huge gorilla thinking to himself that his genitals fit perfectly into the window. It was so absurd that I had to laugh. I could also however imagine someone clicking her tongue disdainfully in reaction to the cartoon.
Rina Piccolo delights in taking cliched images and providing a bizarrely twisted caption. If you are easily offended, Rina is not for you. But if you believe there's no such thing as a "sacred cow" you may find her sense of lunacy refreshing and unique. This is not a gentle ribbing of The Church, but a skewering. Will recent church scandals make these cartoons more socially acceptable? Perhaps.
From someone who should be in this book's corner.......2001-09-10
First a disclaimer. I was born Catholic to Irish parents, spent 17 years in Catholic educational institutions, and have many issues (to put it mildly) with the Roman Catholic Church. I love scathing Catholic humor because it works to dissipate my residual antagonism and because, considering the 1950's Catholic culture I lived through, some of its artifacts, folkways, and pastimes are sitting ducks for comedy. Try telling non-Catholics or younger Catholics about the bottle of shoe white that sat next to a missions collection box in school so we could give to the missions and use the shoe white so the whites of our requisite saddle shoes would be white enough to prevent a detention and it's is hard not to convey the humor. It was mad!
I don't know whether Rina Piccolo is Gen-X and therefore different-minded but cartoon after cartoon in this book is simply not funny. The drawings resemble those from 1950's cocktail napkins, cartoon postcards from non-scenic places, and Playboy--those line drawings of women with big bare bottoms and pointy breasts with obese, leering old men. Perhaps this is what tittering burlesque humor is all about and I'm just lacking that sensibility.
I do think Piccolo misreads the cultural repression, though. For example, for all the lunatic behavior of nuns (and I have many stories!), they were women teaching 50-student classrooms unaided and doing it for nothing. In the midst of the madness were sisters who influenced us positively. And many of those same nuns are still busy as octogenarians, working on social justice issues, women transformed by Vatican II to become the Church's great progressives.
This is not to spoil the fun by advocating the sanctimonious, but to say that the essential paradox of life must make itself felt even in the most over-the-top irreverence. For her to have eliminated every trace of warmth from the humor suggests a rigidity in Piccolo that I can't help but think is out of proportion to anything she has experienced.
But that may be the key to the failure of the book for me. She may be aware of the authoritarian arrogance of the Catholic church and be (rightfully) furious about it, but her "humor" is a retaliation to that, as though drawing a bishop in a jock strap will even the score somehow and bring this gargantuan institution to its knees.
I'm currently worshipping as a Lutheran and bought this book in the hope of using its humor to give insight into Catholic culture in talks I'm giving on Catholicism at my church. The very best religious humor can pull out the stops of irreverance, and torture the sacred cows without mercy, but it also gives insight. (Try GROWING UP CATHOLIC by Meara, et al. or Ed Stivender's RAISED CATHOLIC.) I may be overreacting to this book because I believed that it couldn't disappoint me. And 'd be glad to see alternative viewpoints from those who get its jokes so that perhaps I'd get them too. Left to my own devices, though, I'm not its audience and I'm at a loss to know who is.

Book Description
“I used to hate it when my teachers complained about money. Now I see why they did.”—Jim Kohl
Jim Kohl didn’t always know what he wanted to do, but ever since he ‘found himself’ he wanted to teach. He never wanted to be part of corporate life, he wanted to “be there for the kids” and help them to learn to think for themselves. He took a job at an inner city school teaching seventh-grade English, and he was always happy standing in front of his students in Room 5.
Five years into teaching, Jim came to the sad realization that a teacher’s salary was not going to support his family of five in California’s “Silicon Valley,” one of the most expensive housing areas in the country. Jim was faced with one of the toughest decisions of his life. He was forced to choose between the job he was born to do and the family that he loved.
Join Jim for an insider’s look into California’s public school system. Laugh along with him and the wonderful children he had the opportunity to work with. See first hand the poverty experienced by the practitioners of our most noble profession.
Customer Reviews:
Touching story of a teacher's struggle.......2001-06-30
Mr. Kohl lets us into the most difficult decision of his life with warmth and quiet humor, caring and compassion. His wonderful descriptions pull you into the story and as a result I had a hard time putting this book down. I hope to see more from this new author.
Wonderfully interesting and touching.......2001-06-30
As a former educator in Boston, I found this book to be wonderfully written and very touching. Mr. Kohl showed amazing patience and tact in the face of adversity. He touched the lives of many of his students, obviously, who were lucky enough to have such a motivated person at the head of the class. It's a sad fact that teachers are so under-valued and under-paid. I highly recommend this book.
And he claims he's an English teacher?.......2001-06-24
This guy is one of the most boring writers I have ever encountered. His dialog makes you cry out " If you use the phrase "That's Cool" one more time in this chapter I can't take it!"
The first half of the book, he spends whining about how "hard" it is to break into the teaching profession and his contempt for the "sell-outs" in the business world. Apparently he thinks a credential earns him the right to an instant job because he's such a wonderful, gifted human being. As if he doesn't have to prove himself and build a reputation through hard knocks like the rest of us.
While the interesting anecdotes start to pick up in the middle part of the book, this work sufers from a lack of reflection on the bigger picture of educational bureacracy in CA.
His own inappropriate outbursts at different people throughout the story, and his pattern of introducing and describing all the characters (unless they're white) by their race --are a reflection of his imature/ narrow world-view and unfortunately this book remains an ego driven work instead of an expose of a very corrupt system (for which I am an employee).
Review of Noble Poverty.......2001-04-24
This book is perfect for anyone who has children in public school or plans to have children in public school. Anyone who's trying to get by in the Bay Area, especially someone living on a teacher's salary. It's a quick read. It's fun and heartwarming. Jim has done a great job of bringing you into this part of his life.
