5 out of 5 stars Great book for some great ideas.......2006-09-03

Sorry, but the person who gave this book 2 stars is smoking crack. I spent about an hour flipping through this in the bookstore, but since I had no cash at the time I'm going to order it from amazon. I'm reading as many modern residential architecture books as I can right now since I will be building a house with my wife in the not too distant future. If you are familiar with Dwell magazine, that's the general look we are going for. Most books we have found are good for the general structure of the house. I liked this one for ideas specific to the interior. Lofts covers a wide spectrum of modern interior design for loft structures. This book was great for us in that it was packed with some great pictures that really inspired new ideas for what we want the interior to be. That ranged from creative use of space to flooring, flow of light, and furniture. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

    2 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Dull.......2006-08-07

After enjoying the book "Small Spaces: Good Ideas", I was eager to order another book from the Good Ideas Series. I was greatly surprised to find this book to be so very dull and uninteresting. Most of the lofts shown are remarkably similar in style and design. Virtually all are of the sleek, architectural style that even an avowed minimalist like me found cold and unappealing. Most of the lofts were in New York, while other great cities with a grand history of loft living (such as Los Angeles and others) were omitted. I could not find any lofts that reflected the live/work spaces of real people. The interesting variety of loft design and lifestyle is not reflected here. Order this book if you are looking for examples of expensive white boxes with sharp angles. Otherwise, don't bother. Personally, the only thing this book inspired me to do was to give my copy away.

5 out of 5 stars Companion to tape series by Robert B. Hale.......2005-08-18

I purchased the companion tape series from Jo-An Pictures Ltd in NYC (212-532-5003) several years ago. The book and tapes record the lectures given by Robert Beverly Hale at the Art Student's League in NYC. You may never find better instruction on artistic anatomy and drawing the human form! He was without doubt the greatest instructor of this subject! The tapes are almost like attending his classes! You must draw from life as well as study this material to master the subject. If you cannot afford the tapes, at least get this book! You will not find a better investment but you must also make the effort! A valid observation from his lectures: 'You can not draw a form, if you don't know it exists.' If you want to draw figures that will impress other artists, clients with medical training or other sophisticated viewers, then master the lessons in this book!

I believe Tony Ryder may have attended Robert Hale's lectures at the Art Student's League. Also get Tony Ryder's book entitled "The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing". It represents the other traditional approach to figure drawing. His explanation of light and shadow on the human form is the best I have ever seen. He emphasizes that it takes many hours to complete a finished drawing. Quick sketches are good for warming up but it's only one aspect of practice. Both books are well worth the investment!

        5 out of 5 stars very comprehensive.......2002-06-04

I am currently in Figure drawing 2 and this book is a wonderful help. I have few figure drawing books that I feel compleatly happy with and this one is the best. It shows you how the masters worked with simple shapes, line, value, mass, and anatomy to represent the figure. It breaks up the chapters into body parts and each chapter deals with that specific part. By presenting works of master artists and disecting them you understand how the human form works and can be expressed. I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in drawing the figure, especially beginers.

In Stalinist Russia, it was commonplace for Soviet history to be rewritten with inconvenient participants removed--often men or women who had aided the Communist Revolution in the early days and then had somehow fallen afoul of Stalin himself. In The Commissar Vanishes, English art historian David King assembles an impressive body of photographs and artwork that shows the process whereby a hero could overnight be made into villain. "The physical eradication of Stalin's political opponents at the hands of the secret police was swiftly followed by their obliteration from all forms of pictorial existence," King rightly notes: in one noteworthy sequence reproduced on the cover, a photograph of Stalin with three revolutionary leaders is airbrushed and cropped and clipped until, one by one, those leaders disappear and only Stalin is left--conveying the message that Stalin carried the Russian Revolution by himself. Another photograph from the 1920s depicts a meeting of dozens of trade-union and Bolshevik leaders; by the late 1930s, all but a handful of them had been murdered at Stalin's orders. King's work restores some of these men and women to history and illustrates the essential inhumanity of totalitarian thought.

        Book Description

A New York Times Notable Book, 1997

The lavishly illustrated and often darkly hilarious retelling of Soviet history through the doctored photographs under Stalin.

The Commissar Vanishes has been hailed as a brilliant, indispensable record of an era. The Commissar Vanishes offers a unique and chilling look at how one man--Joseph Stalin--manipulated the science of photography to advance his own political career and erase the memory of his victims. Over the past thirty years David King has assembled the world's largest archive of doctored Soviet photographs, the best of which appear here, in a book Tatyana Tolstaya, in The New York Review of Books, called "an extraordinary, incomparable volume."

Splendid blending of text and photographs. I gave this book to my teenage son as he was reading "1984" for a school assignment. He was impressed with the book on its own merits. The pictures draw you in, and I think this is especially true for teens. I could also see that it helped my son understand that Orwell's fiction was everyday life for the people of the Soviet Union.

        5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2003-09-27

A terrific historical document. Graphically captures the paranoia and retroactive history making that was Stalinism.

        5 out of 5 stars A rare gem.......2002-06-11

A true gem of a book, dealing with a subject that is much overlooked. As the inspiration for Orwell's 1984 revising history, it is a chilling look at early Soviet attempts to rewrite history by erasing people from photos. Watching a photo of 5 men dwindle down to a picture of one as the others are disgraced, imprisoned, killed and then erased is just mindblowing!

Whether you are a fan of Soviet history (i'm not) or not, the cold war touched us all and this book documents it in the entirety

        5 out of 5 stars WOW........2002-04-05

I saw this book just today, in History class. Like another reviewer, i had previously read 1984, and thought it was great, but a little far fetched. would they *really* go to all those lengths to distort history? Well, "The Commissar Vanishes" answered my question. I don't think i've ever seen something so... wow.

5 out of 5 stars Stuff of History, Stuff of Nightmares.......2001-11-11

What would it take to make Hell on earth seem real to you? This profoundly disturbing book had that effect for me.

It might be possible to view this book as humorous. Mr. King's years of patient scholarship have unearthed unmarred originals of photographs that he presents with little or no comment next to what are frequently crudely butchered falsifications of those who fell out of favor with Stalin. Particularly in the age of computer photomanipulation, the alterations are initially comical to twenty-first century eyes.

As one works through the book, however, the comic effect is obliterated by mute evidence of the sheer numbers of people who were expunged year after year from the historical record. Particularly frightening are the official portraits self-censored by relatives of the now-deceased in hopes of forestalling the same fate.

Although not strictly a falsification, of particular interest to me was a picture of the document officially expelling Leon Trotsky from the Communist Party, complete with angry annotations in the margin by Comrade Trotsky himself.

I'd like to believe that the very existence of this book and its photographic record, despite the Soviet attempt of many years to rewrite history, proves that no regime can stifle all unflattering facts about itself for all time. But then I wonder in how many cases, about how many people, they might have been successful. By all means, read this book. Be a witness. Remember the dead. But be warned. The stuff of this history is indeed the stuff of nightmares.

I had always seen Red Talons as the bullies of the werewolves. Never thought they had that much to them, and I had figured out they were simple minded.

And then I met Storm Eye. And I really thought she had a story to tell. Her character and her story are so great that I wanted to know more about her. The mistakes she do, how she learn from them, and the goo things that come her way and are earned by her... Astonishing, really!

And the Fianna book... well, what can I say? I'm really into Fiannas, and just to see how one of them just come and saves the day is great!

4 out of 5 stars Red Talons Exposed.......2002-01-05

Red Talons is the best section of the six parts White Wolf has published so far. It delves into the inner workings of the most misunderstood tribe in the Garou Nation. Storm Eye deals with the loss of her full wolf kin and the consternation of being forced onto an airplane by fellow werewolves. The best part of this novel is the formation of the pack and the bonding of a pack to its totem spirit. Fianna is less interesting, but it puts a new twist into the overall plot of the novels with the pure arrogance of the Silver Fangs.

The tension amongst themselves becomes a danger more powerful than any Black Spiral Dancer, as their comraderie dissipates into a mess of drunk frustration. The bad guys take full advantage of this, and try to pit the werewolves against each other, and plan an all-out assault as well, just for fun!

                        Book Description

Manchester United have enjoyed more than their fair share of great players down the years, but none has been more comitted to the cause than the subject of this biography, Roger Byrne. Brought up in Gorton, a working-class suburb of Manchester, Byrne was at first a promising wing-half, later even turning out at centre-forward, but he came into his own as a left full-back fir United and England. Indeed so committed was he to his position that he threatened to leave United unless Matt Busby returned him to the position following an experimental period on the left-wing. Moreover, Byrne was a product of his era. The 1950's were a time when footballers were woefully underpaid. Indeed, Byrne and his teammates refused to take part in a BBC film under the working title 'training with the Champions' because the players were not going to paid enough. However despite these clashes with authority, Byrne remained fiercely loyal to his manager, teammates and the club's growing army of supporters. By 1958 he and Matt Busby had forged a team of great talent and great resource only for the Munich air disaster to take the Babes away. Who knows how good Roger's team could have become if fate had not intervened?
