This book goes good with Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy. I have gained better understanding from studying this book as well as Hogarth's. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to know a little about human anatomy.

I also own Contructive Anatomy and his books on HANDS. This is a must have. Not just for the content, but also for the style. Any serious artist should diligenly copy the sketches in this book, as a daily sketch exercise.
One of my Top 3 Bridgman books- great in drawing from memory..........2006-03-26
Mainly for intermediate-level artists- I *might* have to pick this as my #1 Bridgman book. It has a little bit of *everything* depicting figure construction from memory. It's also great for general improvement; a few tips & tricks- an indispensable reference for all working artists.
And Bridgman appeals to a *very* wide-ranging audience: fine & commercial artists; illustrators; comicbook pencilers; animators; video-game designers; fashion artists; sculptors; computer graphics designers; students; intermediate-artists; experts; and professionals. This Complete Guide represents the best of 6 out of his 7 individual books. Drawing the Female Form is the book that gets left out. Designed by editor Howard Simon in 1952; Bridgman passed away in 1943, so it's not Bridgman's fault if anyone has issues with the layout(!).
Here's a quick breakdown of his 6 individual books, from my very favorite to least...
1. Book of a Hundred Hands- His *best* representation of hands; if hands are your main interest, skip all else & buy 100 hands.
2. Constructive Anatomy- His *best* individual work on figure construction- especially with cubed-construction of the head.
3. Heads, Features and Faces- Great for beginners; it isn't in-depth, and it isn't nearly overwhelming like this Complete Guide.
4. Human Machine- Genius in concept- drawings exceedingly sketchy. These are the sketchiest drawings in this Complete Guide.
5. Bridgman's Life Drawing- Like a mini Complete Guide. Treats the figure in its parts as well as with basic, full-figure movement.
6. Drawing the Draped Figure- *Very* basic. Everything you need from this exceedingly thin book is included in this Complete Guide.
In short: The basic *point* of Bridgman's Complete Guide is to help people to draw figures more convincingly, and even from memory. To a great degree, at least in my opinion, this book still succeeds in a very effective way...
P.S. This book is definitely *not* for beginners! Only *Intermediate-level* artists need apply.
Amazing.......2006-01-09
I would rate this ten stars if I could. Speaking as someone who has gone to some school and trying to complete my portfolio through books and tutorials, this book is absolutely indispensable. Its a little hard to understand as navarro states earlier. But once you actually work through an exercise, any exercise, his method clicks very quickly and easily. I am amazed by the amount I learn and skill I gain with every page of this book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in any area of art.

Plants go in and out of fashion as rapidly as hemlines rise and fall. Iris, along with other old-fashioned flowers like hollyhocks and hydrangeas, are once again popular, resulting in a flurry of new iris cultivars and books.
Too often these books focus on descriptions and comparisons of all the truly gorgeous varieties of iris, rhapsodizing over falls and beards and color shadings. Sure, it helps to understand the differences between bearded and Louisiana iris, between species and cultivars, but what a gardener really needs to know is how to integrate these tall, stiff and flamboyant flowers into our home gardens.
There are enough color photographs in Iris: Flower of the Rainbow to convince anyone of the beauty and possibilities of iris; tall bearded iris like hot spice in muted tones of cocoa, gold, and cream, or the delicately splotched lavender-and-white Japanese iris, freckled geisha, are nearly irresistible. What this book uniquely offers are drawings, photos, and advice on how to use iris in the garden along with other plants, and how to time their bloom, mix in with perennials and shrubs, and use in ponds and as edging and in rockeries. The author makes the case for using iris in nearly every garden situation; the easy-to-grow, perfumed Iris unguiculalris flowers dependably in winter, Iris foetedissima grows happily in the shade, and I. pallida variegata has spiky foliage striped in brilliant yellow, a focal point long after the flower has faded.
It's unclear whether the final chapter, "The Future--2000 and Beyond," is prescient or just entertaining, but you won't want to miss the doctored color photos of irises in startling kelly green, or pure black combined with baby-pink. --Valerie Easton

The is absolutely the best book I've seem on iris. The book is well laid out and very informative. Grosvenor is a leading authority on iris and comprehensively explains each genus as a group as to characteristics, culture and breeding. Then he gives detailed descriptions the best cultivars of each type. The photography throughout the book is fantastic and completes this book as a treasure!

Working in the same single-panel approach that Gary Larson made popular with The Far Side, Dan Piraro is at the top of his game with a surreal, offbeat and, well, bizarre look at our idiosyncratic world. When, in one panel, a pipe organ falls on a man on the sidewalk, the policeman notes, "Ironic, he was an organ donor." It may be ironic, but it's also pretty darn funny. Nominated in 1996 for Best Single Panel Feature, Bizarro also received the coveted "Stain of Approval" from the World House Pets Association (or so they say).

This is another typically genius work from Dan Piraro. This guy's work is most often compared to The Far Side because of the single-panel format, but this is even a bit weirder, as hard as that is to believe. Some of the jokes will go over your head, but others will make you laugh out loud (I usually don't laugh out loud while reading, but Bizarro books have often made me do so). This is a great coffee table book and is fun to read with a bunch of friends. Pick this one up and you'll be hooked! Highly recommended!

Bizarro No. 10 by Dan Piraro is one of the funniest cartoon books I've ever read. It's the perfect book to keep in your purse or next to the toilet when you have a few moments to kill time.

that gives definitions to some words you won't find in the Oxford English
Dictionary. It is well worth it!
Best American English Dictionary ever!.......2007-03-26
Whenever I want to know what the "TRUE" definition of a word is (not some politcally-correct, smoothed-over definition you find in current dictionaries), I go to this great treasure. Every American home should have one of these jewels, and it should be kept front and center somewhere, preferably displayed open so that it can be accessed and used readily (it will tend to get used more often that way too). Yes, it is kind of expensive, but how much are truthful and accurate word definitions worth to you? In a day and age where people are making up their own definitions to suit themselves (example; remember Bill Clinton saying ".... it all depends on what your definition of "is" is!? Lawyers also like play free and loose with words.), it is more necessary than ever before. This book will take you back to the roots of truth this country was founded on.

It's hard to believe that this book is worth buying when so many "reviewers" praise it but can't spell worth a hoot. Examples: origional (original), comman (common), sentance (sentence), schollar (scholar), entamological (??? from etymology (study of word origin) or entomology (study of insects)???), diferent (different), supprised (surprised), through for thorough, referance (reference), pouring for poring, it's for its and excelent (excellent). Whew! These reviewers need to actually LOOK UP SPELLINGS and not just worry about the moral decay of the American-English language! I hope Noah's spelling wasn't this bad!
Five Stars is not a high enough rating for this awesome book!.......2007-01-03
This is one dictionary that all seeking to better understand the Bible should have. Its introductory 'green pages' are worth the price of the volume alone; the rest is a wonderful bonus!

Noah Webster was described by the publisher of a competing dictionary as "a vain ... plodding Yankee, who aspired to be a second Johnson"—a criticism that rings mostly true. He was certainly vain and, born in Connecticut, undeniably a Yankee. Moreover, though he referred to Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language as a "barren desart of philology," the American lexicographer relied heavily on the book during the creation of his own American Dictionary, going so far as to filch whole sections. And few would seem more "plodding" than Webster, who was positively obsessed with collecting and preserving bits of information. He kept records of the weather, carefully logged the number of houses in every new town he passed through, filed away every scrap of his writing and everything written about him, and filled the margins of his books with references, dates and corrections.
The proud Yankee's sensibilities, however, also made him a fine lexicographer. Generally credited with distinguishing American spelling and usage from British, Webster shunned prescriptive mores and was doggedly loyal to his own language habits, as well as to those of the average American speaker.
The book covers Webster's major publications and the influences and methods that shaped them; recounts his life as schoolteacher, copyright law champion, and itinerant lecturer; and examines the Webster legacy. An appendix containing title page reproductions from Webster's books, as well as some from his predecessors and competitors, is also included.
