Book Description

Site-specific art emerged in the late 1960s in reaction to the growing commodification of art and the prevailing ideals of art's autonomy and universality. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as site-specific art intersected with land art, process art, performance art, conceptual art, installation art, institutional critique, community-based art, and public art, its creators insisted on the inseparability of the work and its context. In recent years, however, the presumption of unrepeatability and immobility encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work" is being challenged by new models of site specificity and changes in institutional and market forces.

One Place after Another offers a critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s and a theoretical framework for examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism and political progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban theory, postmodernist criticism in art and architecture, and debates concerning identity politics and the public sphere, the book addresses the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between location and identity in the era of late capitalism. The book addresses the work of, among others, John Ahearn, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Donald Judd, Renee Green, Suzanne Lacy, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Richard Serra, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, and Fred Wilson.

4 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-04-28

This is a helpful survey of the related issues of site specificity and institutional critique. My students find it accessible, and find that it ties together major themes and artists of the 1970s. Highly recommended for those teaching/studying art since 1970.

3 out of 5 stars ok for starters.......2007-02-08

I was waiting eagerly for the Kwon to arrive after I purchased it, perhaps this heightened expectation is to blame for the slight sense of deflation as I read it.
The text has a fairly useful historical overview of the history of 'site' as an artistic idea, with a specifically American focus. One of my disappointments was that Kwon appears to be relying on secondary research, drawing from public art examples already extensively discussed in other public art texts, most notably those of Tom Finklepearl and Grant Kester. The book raises some interesting questions about the relationships between comissioning agents and artists in relation to the thorny problem of what constitutes an identifiable 'community.' These questions are however limited to a narrow interpretation of what public art practice is, remaining close to issues found in what has been called New Genre.
All in all useful as an introduction to the subject, a teaching tool for undergraduate students, but perhaps better as a companion text rather than a definitive source. If you have the Finklepearl already you may not need this one.

3 out of 5 stars useful addition to the literature.......2004-05-16

This book is a useful addition to the literature--a more comprehensive book that also looked at practices outside the USA is what is really needed. That's one of the major drawbacks of this book, it doesn't clearly indicate that it is tracing an American history of the idea of site-specificity.

The first chapter provides a short history of site specificity from an American point of view (minimalism, conceptual art's critique of institutions) and draws heavily on James Meyer's idea of the functional site to think about the present, after that the book is a series of case studies. A better book for considering the range and history of site specific practices (which includes this book's first chapter and Meyer's essay) is Erika Suderburg's Space Site Intervention.

2 out of 5 stars One obscure word after another is more like it.......2003-09-28

Miwon Kwon's writing is extremely wordy and very hard to grasp. You'll inevitably spend more time looking up her obscure vocabulary than actual reading. I found her writing hard to comprehend even after reading chapters multiple times. I'm a college level reader, and have experienced few problems understanding other art related readings. Her sentences are incredibly redundant and very hard to understand. Honestly, I would ONLY recommend this book to College Professors or anyone with a PHD; otherwise save your self the time and pass this one up. You'll be happy you did.

5 out of 5 stars one contention after another.......2002-08-10

I find Kwon's book informative and insightful, especially as a practitioner working with installation and context-specific project, and with current development of contemporary theories particularly in mind. Kwon's geneological approach towards reading the development of site-specific work is impressive, obviously overlaid with cultural theory in her analysis. Although she has focused mainly on the perplexity of community-charged art projects at the later chapter, her delivery on spatial politics and the many other facets of the production of site-specific art is most valuable, especially with some useful terminology and concepts (in reading the progress of these practice). Reading the text in conjunction with few other similar books on the issue of space, site and art production, one could discern some of the common notions of criticality and urgency in addressing the unscrupulous co-option of mainstream institutional forces. No doubt, the text could post as both informative and also a challenge towards artistic production, itself in turn becomes a site of intervention as it suggest (and aim) for communal praxis in an (politically correct) age of `glocalisation'.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference........2007-07-28

Very very helpful book to browse if you are getting started. It helps one better understand which types of pastels do what, oil, soft, hard etc.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those just beginning in pastel work.......2007-03-21

I found this book to be a terrific reference for any artist beginning to explore pastels. There are lots of charming paintings by the author, and demo photos of how the paintings came into being. There is also a WONDERFUL section on supplies: what and where to get them, how they're priced, and if they're worth it. Yet, I do wish that the author had spent a little more time on showing and explaining works that were JUST done in pastels and less on mixed media with pastels. But that's just my opinion. It's a great book and worth buying, regardless of how much of a purist you may be.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction and referrence for pastel painting. .......2007-03-14

I bought this book a number of years ago and find myself referring to it over and over. The author covers a lot of ground and does so in an even handed manner, not stressing his own preferences to the detriment of other artists' points of view, e.g. using fixative. (He shows the same fairness in his book on oil painting by the way.)
However, this is not a "step by step" book on how to make set example paintings. Those who are looking for specific by the numbers instruction and hand holding may be disappointed. There are a number of works available that do this, but they do not have nearly the depth and breadth of this book.
The only problem I have with this work is that it needs updating especially in the materials area. Time for a new edition!

4 out of 5 stars great overview.......2007-01-18

I found this book to be very helpful as a reference for pastel materials and techniques. As a beginner pastel artist, the world of pastels and papers can be very overwhelming, and here he provided a wonderful breakdown of the characteristics of each well-known brand.

Macintosh products are known for being easy to use, and deservedly so. You can muddle your way through pretty much any Mac OS program, and make it do what it's supposed to, without a manual or the online help. The latest version of the video-editing software for Mac OS, iMovie 2, is no exception, but David Pogue delivers real value in iMovie 2: The Missing Manual. Composed in Pogue's trademark friendly style, the book contains enough excellently written explanations and examples to significantly flatten the iMovie 2 learning curve, so it's a pleasure to read, bookmark, and refer back to.

For an example of how this book is technically precise in an engaging way, consider how it explains the purpose of the QT Margins check box, which has to do with compensating for a margin-cropping characteristic of televisions. Pogue proposes an equivalent label: "'QT Margins' means 'Assume this movie will be shown as a QuickTime movie, and therefore won't have chopped-off margins.'" The meaning of a fairly cryptic label becomes absolutely obvious.

Further kudos go to the book's designers for their liberal inclusion of illustrations. Where multiple frames are needed to illustrate a point, they're included. Tips and notes serve a valuable purpose, and are likely to introduce even seasoned iMovie editors to features they've missed on their own. --David Wall

Topics covered: Capturing video with a camera, then editing it on the Mac to include appealing transitions, effects, titling, and audio. The process of exporting edited video from the computer (such as for videotape or Web publishing).

Book Description

When it created iMovie in 1999, Apple Computer made digital video editing almost as easy as using a word processor--and even less expensive. Built into most modern Macintosh models is the circuitry needed to record pro-quality video from a digital camcorder, and then send the edited movies back to TV or tape with zero picture-quality loss.

Now Apple takes the revolution to the next level with the dramatically enhanced iMovie 2.0. The new software adds the option of inserting new video over a continuous audio track; removes limitations on the number of raw clips from which to choose scenes; and offers bonuses such as special effects and brightness and contrast adjustments, much greater typographical flexibility in its title- and credit-maker, and a far more useful and complete audio-track editor.

But one thing hasn't changed: iMovie 2, though much more sophisticated than its predecessor, still doesn't come with a single page of printed instructions.

Pogue Press/O'Reilly's iMovie: The Missing Manual, released in May 2000, became an instant bestseller, requiring two reprints in three months and earning rave five-star reviews on Amazom.com. This entertaining guide covers every step of iMovie video production, from choosing and using a digital camcorder to burning the finished work onto CDs. The book's philosophy: Giving someone iMovie without also teaching basic film technique is like giving a map to a teenager without teaching him to drive.

Now author David Pogue is back with an expanded, revised edition, now called iMovie 2: The Missing Manual, rewritten to cover iMovie 2 and nothing but.

Far deeper and more detailed than the meager set of online help screens included with iMovie, the book helps iMovie users realize the software's potential as a breakthrough in the cost, complexity, and difficulty of desktop video production.

With a technical review by Glenn Reid, architect and lead engineer of both iMovie and iMovie 2.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Must-Have iMovie book -- a bit outdated though.......2003-02-20

First I have to give props to David Pogue and his Missing Manual series. As a bookseller and computer geek I've long favored the Dummies books as the best entry-level source for third-party information on software. However, O'Reilly made a smart move when they turned their attention on that market and grabbed Dummies standby Pogue to headline the new series. The Missing Manuals (and their mutant-dogcow mascot) are a credit to O'Reilly and a must-have... assuming, that is, that they cover the program you need. The series is still too small, but I'm sure it won't stay that way.

Now, to the book itself. If you need to do something with iMovie, it's in there. That pretty much covers what I need to say in this review, but it doesn't cover everything the book has to offer. Remember back in the 80s when the Mac made desktop publishing a reality, only to unleash a torrent of wretchedly amateurish graphic design? Well, Pogue spends much of the first couple of chapters attempting to prevent that from happening. This book starts off with a very basic primer on video production and how to use your equipment -- assumed to be a typical consumer-grade MiniDV camcorder, but it covers other options as well, particularly video bridges and the like.

The meat of the book discusses iMovie 2's capabilities, including discussions of its weaknesses and how to work around them. Effects, titles, and transitions are discussed in detail, including some useful information on crossfades (never fade straight to black -- instead, you want a black stillframe). Conversion to other formats is also an issue, and a significant part of the book discusses postproduction using QuickTime Pro. Directions are given for converting your work for DVD or VCD as well.

The issue I have with the book is largely its focus on iMovie in MacOS Classic, and the bugs that are present in that version that might not be in the OS X version. Screenshots all come from 9.x, with the only Aqua material being the interface of iMovie itself. I don't mark down for this since the program operates more or less the same, but an inexperienced user may have trouble. (I might note as well that the book works just as well for iMovie 3, which has a superficially different interface but handles more or less identically.)

So, yeah. If you're doing video production on iMovie, this is the book to get, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars Informative, Clearly Organized and Useful.......2002-10-22

I bought three books to teach myself how to produce DVDs. The Erica Sadun book is for advanced users and was not helpful to me. The Bob LeVitus "Little iDVD Book" is probably one of the most poorly organized and edited books I've ever come across on any subject.

Pogue's "Missing Manual", on the other hand, is comprehensive, clear and well-organized. I've produced about half a dozen DVDs since reading (and re-reading) Pogue's book and it clearly made a huge difference in what I was able to construct using iDVD.

In my opinion, this is the only book you need to read to learn how to produce movies using iDVD.

Beyond teaching readers to work with iDVD, Pogue also offers loads of helpful suggestions about editing in general. This book is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Solved a problem in my first reading.......2002-08-11

I love this book! I was ready to give up trying to use iMovie because of a small glitch that was incurring. After browsing thru the book the very first time I opened it, I came across the trouble I was having with iMovie. Mr. Pogue directed me to the correct settings and I am now having a great time editing my DV movies.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to use iMovie. There is so much more to this program than Apple addresses in the help file. Mr. Pogue's writing is concise but not out of reach for the average Mac user.

I have many books by Mr. Pogue and I would recommend any of them if you are stumped and need a well explained how-to-manuel.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2002-06-17

It's OK. It has about the same amount of material as the "iMovie 2 for Macintosh Visual Quickstart Guide" - The missing manual is fatter because it contains additional stories and things that a reader might find amusing, but that are not particular relevant to the topic. The section on movie making basics is very good. For an expanded view see "The Five C's of Cinematography". I thought I would find more information in this book since it is fatter than in the VQG, but it ended up that they are about even in content.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Simon.......2002-05-21

Can it get any simpler !! ha ha ha ha ha
I found this book to be extremely informative and easy to understand (especially since i am yet to purchace a mac and digital video cammera ).. I will have no hesitation now to go out and purchase a Mac and a Digital cammera .. and feel confident making my first feature film or "Home Movie " LOL

    Book Description

Do you have what it takes to travel trillions of miles to the edge of the universe? Can you handle an adventure beyond time and space? If you have the nerve, behold Talons of Time.

Peddar Zaskq and the Magicians of Lo propel you into a boundless realm beyond the physical universe. They must retrieve the diary of scientist John Skally before it falls into the wrong hands. It contains the Secret of Time.

An even trickier part of their mission is to free John Skally's very soul, held captive by Kal Niranjan, the two-headed God of the Time Makers. Should they fail in their mission, all time and motion - the basic elements upon which this universe is founded - will stop. Life will come to a halt!

This retro-classic graphic novel is based on the 70s spiritual science-fiction adventure by the modern-day founder of Eckankar, Paul Twitchell. Talons of Time is superbly illustrated by well-known artist Mar Amongo. When you reach the story's end, you'll emerge with some of the best-kept secrets of this universe found in the ancient wisdom of Eckankar.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING - THIS IS A COMIC BOOK, NOT A NOVEL!.......2002-03-05

This is a beautifully done "comic book" version of the Twitchell novel, "Talons of Time". Definitely a collector's item if you love the novel, but *not* the novel if that's what you're looking for (like *I* was...).

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-07-11

I have had two copies of this book at two different times. With each book ending up in the hands of friends. The book is very thought provoking. For anyone willing to step outside the norm of thinking, this is a good place to start. Very fast paced and engaging - even for a slower reader such as myself.

    5 out of 5 stars highly discriptive.......2000-05-06

I've found that Paul Twithell's book The Talons of Time is a novel that invokes the imagination. A book that takes you there! You are Peddar Zaskq, the main character of this novel! This one's sure to be a classic. I'd like to see it as a movie, but then movies aren't as good as one's imagination.

2 out of 5 stars Hack Writing At It's Best.......2000-01-12

The book has a very intriguing plot and does move along at good speed. There is action on every page. Twitchell's occassional allusions to great spiritual truths appear like fluff to add credence to a piece of hack writing. Character development is extremely poor. It's as if he wrote the piece as a pamphlet for his Eckankar idea. If you like L. Ron Hubbard's stuff you'll like this book.

2 out of 5 stars Sci Fi Metaphysics.......2006-11-07

Esoteric metaphysics to battle the evil two-headed god and his cyclopean minions. Throw in some astral worlds, space ships, robots, cyborgs, and soul travel and we have a pretty wild sci fi here!

I love science fiction, and metaphysics as well, so I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, the writing is really bad. The book did not flow for me at all, plowing through the pages to get the story was a real chore. Such a shame too, because I really liked the story. A good editor could have saved this book for me.

The metaphysical nature of space and time is discussed ad nauseam. This stuff may have been new and interesting back when the book was published, but it seemed old hat to me now. The story really bogs down in it at times.

I probably would have been better off with the comic book version...

I bought this for my daughter to learn about Mia. I think the price for this book for the detail/content was shocking. It's no wonder they show you so little in the preview, any more and you certainly would not need to buy it.
