Book Description
Palm Beach Houses offers a strikingly illustrated, extensively researched history of Palm Beach architecture. It reveals the stories behind the families who built these palatial homes with exquisite detailing, lavish interiors, and semi-tropical gardens. Valuable close-ups on Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio, and Marion Sims Wyeth, the three major architects in the area during the 1920s and 1930s, are also included.

Vahalla on the Atlantic.......2006-01-21
This is an easy book to navigate, the text is informative, and the photographs are nicely done. I was a bit disappointed that some of the grandeur mansions where absent, but the largest, Mar-A-Lago was included, and that was appreciated. None of the homes are explored in great detail and though every home has an image, I would have liked to have seen more visuals, but as I have stated above the images are well done and the book does cover an impressive list of homes. I recommend this book as a good sampling of Palm Beach homes, but hardly definitive, maybe someone will be able to gain access at some point to some of the grandest private estates, and here's hoping they bring a camera with plenty of gig's.
A2techbooks.......2003-10-23
I received my book in good condition and in a timely manner. I appreciate the packaging and promptness.
A brilliant book for architectural enthusiasts........2001-11-23
My boss has this book to get ideas for designing custom homes for high-profile clients. I have read the book from cover to cover but every time I open it, it seems like I discover anew more pictures & details of these beautiful homes. These Palm Beach houses were built as if they were competing with one another for the title of 'most splendid work of art'. Most are not sprawling mansions or overly complicated expressions of the wealth of their owners. They are, however, fine examples of the architecture of Palm Beach summer homes of the 1920's priveleged upper class.
I love this book. Of course It would be nice if there were floorplans. And as usual one closes the book wishing he could see more photos of each of the houses. But there are many stunning photos. Kudos to the photographer. It is well worth the money and I will get it someday if I can no longer borrow it from my boss.
Superb illustrations and text.......1999-05-30
This fine coffee table book is filed with wonderful photographs of a small selection of some of the finest mansions in the country. The ranges of houses from Adam and Regency, to simple clapboard, to Spanish/Moorish is excellent. The text is informative, accurate and well written. If interested in South Florida fine architecture, this book is a must.
Book Description
Palm Beach: An Architectural Legacy details the meticulous restorations of over twenty great houses and public buildings on what has been called "America's Riviera." These houses were restored from 1988 to the present, and each house has won the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach's coveted Ballinger Award. The glorious photography showcased here respectfully documents the superb restoration of these houses, many of which have never before been published.
The cycle of building and restoration chronicled here encompasses one of America's enduring architectural landscapes, as well as the dynamics of its social history. Public and private structures designed by some of the style-setting early architects are depicted, including the works of Addison Mizner, Joseph Urban, and Maurice Fatio, as well as anonymous designers whose feats of imagination rivaled those of the most celebrated professionals.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2006-06-26
Polly Anne Earl does a beautiful job with this book. It is everything I expected it to be. The pictures, the history, the overall format.
The book highlights many Robert Ballinger award winning homes throughout Palm Beach.
The award is given for outstanding historic restorations of homes deemed "historical landmarks".
This book includes majestic homes by many renowned architects including Addison Mizner, Marion Silms Wyeth, and John Volk amongst others.
Another book to enjoy is "Palm Beach Splendor" the homes of Jeffery Smith.
If you are thinking of building a home, have an interest in architecture, or just simply enjoy browsing thru beautiful homes; you won't be disappointed with either.
fp
Palm Beach Splendor.......2006-01-21
This book covers an impressive array of homes and the images are crisp and well conceived. Palm Beach is so blessed with stunning architecture, it really is like a laboratory for grand residental design. The homes selected are for the most part spectacular and the interior detailing is often stunning. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation of well crafted restoration and great residential architecture.

The Land of Mango Sunsets: A Novel
ASIN: 078624738X |
Book Description
Known for her moving characters and emotional honesty, Mary Alice Monroe brings readers a beautifully rendered story that explores the fragile yet enduring bond between mothers and daughters.
Carette Rutledge thought she'd left her Southern roots and troubled family far behind. But an unusual request from her mother -- coming just as her own life is spinning out of control -- has Cara heading back to the scenic Lowcountry of her childhood summers. Before long, the rhythms of the island open her heart in wonderful ways as she repairs the family beach house, becomes a bona fide "turtle lady" and renews old acquaintances with her mother that she will earn life's most precious lessons -- true love involves sacrifice, family is forever and the mistakes of the past can be forgiven.

FIVE STARS PLUS !!!.......2007-07-17
MONROE IS A WONDERFUL AUTHOR,AND HER NOVELS ABOUT THE LOW COUNTRY IN THE SOUTH ARE SIMPLY CAPTIVATING. SHE AND ANNE SIDDONS MAKES YOU WANT TO GO TO THE SOUTH LOW COUNTRY AND STAY THERE FOREVER. THIS STORY IS WONDERFUL AND IS SO REAL AS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS,AND FAMILY MEMBERS SO OFTEN HAPPEN IF PEOPLES LIVES. LOVED THE BOOK !
Great Summer Read.......2007-07-16
The Beach House was a great summer read. I have always wanted to spend
a summer in a beach house on the east coast and this story had me wanting
it even more. Learning about the Loggerhead turtles was an extra
added bonus. Looking forward to reading other Mary Alice Monroe books.
Well written but boring.......2007-06-29
This book is an easy summer read, very well written, with an interesting theme of the loggerhead turtles. However, I found the story itself very uninteresting, nothing beyond what most of us have in our own families.
Carolina family dynamics.......2007-06-22
An odd mix of realistic situations for the main character with an undertone of romance novel in the latter part of the story. The love of coastal nature and realistic, but inspiring, treatment of relationships among the women made this a book my wife and I have given away to others. Definitely light and fun enough to warrant a place in the beach bag for your next trip to the beach house.
The Beach House.......2007-05-29
I read the Beach House and fell in love with the characters. Couldn't wait then to read the sequel. Mary Alice Monroe creates great peolple and educates you at the same time. The turtles were wonderful and so interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Good Step-by-Step Collage Book.......2006-01-19
I like this book, along with Creative Collage Techniques by Nita Leland. As a beginner, I needed something that would give me the information I needed and to spark my creative juices.
This book includes a Materials and Ingredients list for each project and Recipes throughout. There was cornstarch paste recipe, which may be something I try at a later date, but I want to keep it simple for now. The book has great photographs and text that show the steps needed to complete the project. It also includes a gallery of collage art by various artists. Collage Art covers paper, fabric, found object collage and collagraphy "the process of making a print from a collage plate".
A very nice book to add to your collection.
Nice Addition to the Collage Library.......2005-08-19
I rate this book a 4-star only because it's several year old. The inspiration here is terrific. I question some of the "how to's" only because there are other methods available now(no need to make your own glue). Acrylic medium is the best adhesive available for collage art. It touches on fabric collage as well. The gallery of work is wonderful. You cannot (and should not) duplicate, but your are given enough inspiration to create your own work. I would say this book is big on "Look what you could do" and little light on the "How to". Still . . . a good keeper. Excellent and plentiful full-color photos.
Lush, be inspired!.......2003-10-09
I've had my share of disappointments with collage books. So much of the rubber stamping craft craze has moved into what we call "Collage".
I was afraid this book would be hyping rubber stamp and craft company
products. Never have I been so WRONG!
This book is by and for artists who are working on original ideas. The "how to's" are not for cookie cutter projects but informative in recipes (wheat paste glue) and techniques. All work in this book is by serious,
original artists.
This book has me planning two days off to play around with some of my own ideas using the techniques of application of paint and materials in this book.
You won't be sorry, buy the book!
Releasing my "Inner Artist".......2001-10-26
I have long been interested in collage and recently decided to try my hand at it. To facilitate this, I got several books on the subject. This was one of the nicest and most complete.
Atkinson's beautiful book was a great help. I liked the way collage artists showed, step by step, how they created their collages. The photgraphy of the pieces was excellent, making it a very visually appealing book.
My only disappointment was that the book did not cover what materials to use, what glue to paste with, what different kinds of papers are available, and preservation of the finished work. This is not the fault of the author....she never claimed that the book was a beginner's guide.
Overall, this was a great resource book.
Collage for the conoissier..........2001-05-28
This book is dedicated to those who already know the first steps of collage works: what materials to use, what glue to paste with, what elements to include... but it gives an amazing amount of ideas and new approaches that are awesome. You can't miss this publication if you are collage-prone. It's a delight for the eye and helps you understand how artists use their skills and imagination. Take a look!... Am I wrong?

Book Description
Fred Terman was an outstanding American engineer, teacher, entrepreneur, and manager. Terman was also deeply devoted to his students, to engineering, and to Stanford University. This biography focuses on the weave of personality and place across time—it examines Terman as a Stanford faculty child growing up at an ambitious little regional university; as a young electrical engineering professor in the heady 1920s and the doldrums of the Depression; as an engineering manager and educator in the midst of large-scale wartime research projects and the postwar rise of Big Science and Big Engineering; as a university administrator on the razor’s edge of great expectations and fragile budgets; and, finally, as a senior statesman of engineering education. The first doctoral student of Vannevar Bush at M.I.T., Terman was himself a prodigious teacher and adviser to many, including William Hewlett and David Packard. Terman was widely hailed as the magnet that drew talent together into what became known as Silicon Valley.
Throughout his life, Fred Terman was constant in his belief that quality could be quantified, and he was adamant that a university’s success must, in the end, be measured by the success of its students. Fred Terman’s formula for success, both in life and for his university, was fairly simple: hard work and persistence, systematic dedication to clearly articulated goals, accountability, and not settling for mediocre work in yourself or in others.
Customer Reviews:
A Real Biography.......2005-07-15
This biography of Fred Terman was thorough, detailed, and well-documented. The author did a fine job in piecing together the biograhical data into an enjoyable narrative. At times it is very scientific and gets into real science, at others its heart warming and all about love, family -- the stuff that really matters.
What is really amazing is the amount of documentation -- letters, notes, historical records, sketches, etc -- that not only the author dug up, but apparently Fred kept and then donated to the University. I learned about a lot of other things Fred donated to the University too -- such as his house and his book royalties. It goes without saying, but I learned a lot about Fred.
Although I am a Cornellian and not a Cardinal, I believe that this book should be required reading for every freshman entering both Stanford and Cornell, in the summer prior to their matriculation. Not only does this tell a story of a real person, with weaknesses, faults, and strengths, it tells a story of a human who perservered through terrible, life-threatening illnesses to become a leader who changed not only Stanford and Palo Alto and also catalyzed Silicon Valley, but the world. Moreover, it also is a story of family, of things good in life that I believe is still a value in the Valley and was partially responsible for enabling it to springboard off of Fred's initiatives. Finally, it is a story of an entrepreneur, whose vision, perseverance, and care enabled him to achieve greatness, not through himself, but through others, and he reveled in it.
As a Ph.D. student researching entrepreneurship and innovation within the triple helix models (university-industry-government), I was of course interested in why Stanford is such a leader in innovation, and thus this book was a must for me to read, once I learned it was published last fall. However, I got so much more out of it than expected, over and above what I sought to understand intellectually within my narrow field of academic interest. But then again, this is what a good biography is supposed to deliver, is it not?

THHIS IS NOT A REVIEW, BUT A CORRECTION IN YOUR LISTINGS OF ONE OF MY OTHER BOOKS. You mis-spell my author's name in one of my books now out of print. in my book Coulomb and the Evolution of Physics and Engineering in Eighteenth-Century France, you have my name listed as spelled Gilmor, and Gillmour. INCORRECT. Correct author's name
C. Stewart Gillmor, as in four of my other books you list.

Open frank take on Black male sexuality.......2001-05-08
Many psychologists recommend that if one is truly attempting to heal deep wounds of emotional frustration, exhaustion and depletion the mind has to change focus. At the root of that catalytic change must be an ability to properly access what went wrong and a commitment to truly be honest and call a spade a spade. In his latest literary offering, Walking Proud: Black men living beyond the stereotypes, medical doctor George Edmond Smith performs a much needed truth-telling session about black male sexuality in an effort to heal old cultural wounds that are infecting the black family. Dr. Smith takes a fresh and frank comprehensive approach to explore the attitudes and issues associated with black male sexuality. Smith identifies the impact stereotypes and cultural influences have had in blocking many black men and women from having fruitful relationships and happy home lives. The 12 chapter-256 page book discusses how Black men view themselves as family members and romantic partners. Walking proud delivers powerful advice on how societal stereotypes sabotage relationships, how to change hurtful behavior as Dr. Smith examines what anger and abuse mean in sexual relationships. Practical tools on how to develop intimate communication skills, in addition to how to deal with sexual problems like impotence and other sexual dysfunction are also discussed. Not one to talk about black men in a vacuum, Dr. Smith incorporates female insight into Walking Proud to reveal what black women expect from black men and what black men need from their women and even touches on the controversial subject of homosexuality....With a forward by Essence columnist and psychologist Gwendolyn Goldsby Grant, Walking Proud attempts to preserve a paternal model needed in the black community and seeks to make it a norm rather than an exception.
