Pure Glamour.......2007-04-17
This is one of the few books that could be judge by its cover and title. The pictures are excellent and the properties selected are some of the best mansions in FL. I enjoy the many details that are exposed with blueprints and sketches next to their actual pictures. The books include seven of my favorite's houses in FL, an apartment in NYC and other selected properties. If you are looking for a book full of splendor this is the one.

Wow, what a book! These estates are just incredible, the images are vivid and first rate and the text is very interesting and easy to navigate. Jeffrey Smith really knows how to design grand homes, his houses though mammoth, really fit Palm Beach, I mean one expects grand mansions in this Vallhalla of the truly rich, but Jeffrey Smith's homes are tastful, they are huge, but they fit their environment and are respectful to the neighborhoods in which they reside. Very nice book on a most deserving subject.

Summary Information on bodies, lenses, not accessories........2006-02-21
This new version has 2004 copyright date and likely added information; my old version included a paragraph on each Leica body and three paragraphs or so per lens up to 2002 (copyright date). Leica M & R, body & lens lines, are both included.
What makes the pocket book really stand out among Leica literature are the lens descriptions by Erwin Puts. Given are basic naming of the lens design for some of the older lenses, how to identify the lens via its physical characteristics, and lens visual performance characteristics. Production date range, Leica sales code, serial #, max aperture, lens diagonal angle, minimum focus distance, weight, and filter for each lens back to the 1920's are listed. Most information is accurate but given all the variations on these lenses no such information is perfect. Rather than saying the book has errors I'd say that the information listed is accurate plus the same lenses were made with occasionally different characteristics such as for example with a different filter mount.
Included are two MTF graphs for almost every lens, one wide open and one at best aperture. Since a brief combined technical/aesthetic comment is woven into the lens information the book is one of the few places where lenses can be compared. For those who like to study MTF graphs hours of fun are to be had. MTF graphs are briefly explained in the "Introduction to Lenses" section.
A fantastic book for the new and especially used purchaser. For more verbal lens description but no MTF graphs see Erwin Puts "Leica Lens Compendium". This book is one of the elements that makes Leica a great camera to own since other manufacturers don't have the motivated intellectual user following necessary to produce such basic information on their lenses. If you want MTF graphs the Pocket book receives highest recommendation.

If you've been bitten by the Leica bug, or have an interest in Leica history, you'll like this book.
It's not a book that's going to keep you up reading until the wee hours. It's reference material, pure and simple.
If you need to know the date of manufacture of a specific Leica product you'll probably find it here. Do you need to know if a particular lens was made in both chrome and black paint finish? Yep, that's here too.
To call this a "pocket book" is something of a misnomer unless your pockets are larger than mine. I also can't imagine carrying this book around unless you're doing some serious Leica shopping.
Anyway, it's probably the cheapest Leica accessory you're likely to come across and one that you really should own if you're a Leica lover.

For the 7th Edition listing information up to 2002: Brief identification and functional information for Leica-M to M7 and Leica-R to R9. For M lenses all but the newest 50mm F1.4 Asph (unless I've forgotten another new M lens, for R lenses I don't know). Basically all lenses until about the year 2002 publish date.
The information is designed to help the purchaser of historical pieces quickly determine differences so most of the important facts are listed. Two MTF graphs for almost all lenses except a few older ones. The biggest aperture and the best aperture MTF are given. Pictures of nearly all lenses and variations. A thrill to read and use. Erwin Puts comments are included with the MTF's.
Includes Visoflex system adapter chart and lenses and Telyt information. R lens camming explained and pictured. Screw and Bayonet M and R Body historical chart with important yet limited list of defining features given. Digital to Digilux-1 plus Leica S1 "scanner" studio camera for M & R lenses digital basics and models. Compact cameras until 2002. Page 88-90 MTF and filter types explained (missing is filter size and thread chart!). Special body models and lenses listed. Servicing discussed.
Serial numbers for bodies and lenses. Add to this the "Leica Handbook 2002/2003" (buy direct from Leica) which has better filter information and a few web downloads from Leica USA and you can identify and build a Leica system.A truly great reference book that I use constantly to compare and purchase lenses. THE best of these quick reference books.
Extremely useful to Leica collectors.......1999-11-23
I refer only to Laney's 6th Edition of this book published in September 1994. I am searching high and low for the update -- probably still published by Hove Collectors Books in the UK (they are well-known for their Leica series). The book gives a rapid comparison of pretty well all Leica and Leicaflex cameras and lenses, with photos and production numbers by year (unusual data) for each model. It also has very useful camera and lens serial number dating lists (provided by Leitz in Germany) which will tell you when a camera/lens was made. There is also a companion book by same publisher called Leica-International Price Guide which I also seek. Latter book shows the rarity of each item and gives market prices for ALL Leica items (not just cameras and lenses) in dollars, pounds and deutschemarks, plus a reference page to the camera and lens book when relevant. If you are a Leica collector/user, or are planning to buy/sell equipment, these book are a great, almost essential, companion set. As I said, Hove has been in the Leica book business for decades. Amazon: why don't you list Hove and their books?

Although he has never run for elected office, the former president of the University of North Carolina has been prominent in public affairs for decades and ranks as one of the most important American university presidents of the post-World War II era. Friday's thirty years as president of the university, from 1956 to 1986, spanned the greatest period of growth for higher education in American history, and he played a crucial role in shaping the sixteen-campus university during that time of tumultuous social change. In the 1960s and 1970s, he confronted a series of administrative challenges, including the expansion of the university system, the evolving role of the federal government in the affairs of a public university, an intercollegiate athletics scandal, the anticommunism crusade and the Speaker Ban, and racial integration.
Link also explores Friday's influential work outside the university in American higher education, on the Carnegie Commission on the Future of American Education and the White House Task Force on Education, and in the development of the National Humanities Center and the growth of Research Triangle Park. Now retired from the university, Friday heads the William R. Kenan, Jr., Fund and the Kenan Charitable Trust.

Given to me as a gift by my niece, this book gave me many good laughs. The writer is one heck of a funny guy. He seems to know his stuff, too, about, as he says, "uncling." I particularly enjoyed the low-down on uncles of pop culture. I'll be purchasing a copy for one of my uncles shortly.

What better gift for a favorite uncle? The book is filled with funny stories, fascinating trivia, and warm tales of unclehood. I especially liked the author's interviews with children.

The book was written by cruising the web for anything and everything related to uncles. And that's it, just a list of trivial factoids about uncles. There is almost no original content here. I was hoping for an essay, or at least some good exerpts from literature, but instead I got synopses of TV characters. Some research-only books like Cod, are good. This one is pretty lame, definitely not worth it.

It's about time us uncles got some attention. This is a really fun book that my girlfriend gave me. I just became an uncle seven months ago and love my little nephew. And now I have a few more ideas on what to do with him as he gets older and becomes an individual. What a fun book. Russ Wild should be proud.
