Book Description

Clearly written and profusely illustrated, Patterns of Home brings the timeless lessons of residential design to homeowners who seek inspiration and direction in the design or remodel of their homes. Patterns of Home promises to become the "design bible" for homeowners and architects. The 10 patterns described in the book -- among them, "capturing light" and "the flow through rooms" -- are drawn from hundreds of principles and presented with clarity by the authors, renowned architects who have designed homes together for more than 30 years. Insightful tours of 33 homes also bring the essential design concepts to life. This book will jump-start the design process and make the difference between a home that satisfies material requirements -- and one that meets the personal needs of a home. "Patterns of Home gives us the tools to make our houses truly wonderful places to live." -- Sarah Susanka

4 out of 5 stars Take what you need, leave the rest.......2007-07-04

The architect authors have matured since they wrote "A Pattern Language" (APL), and have made a large effort to extract and apply just the essential rules from the hundred of rules of APL.

True, PoH is a large, posh book of large, posh homes. The cost of the homes are far outside the means of over 99 percent of American families. However, these large designs include truly practical concepts that can be translated into more realistic homes.

Each design is far more useful and welcoming that what you might find in a bool of hundreds of houseplans. We are going to build an energy efficient home under 2000 sq ft, and we will refer to PoH to stay on track with the few essential elements. No, it will not have 30 foot ceilings over a huge common room (just you try and paint it!), but it will show the roofline and include other elements.

4 out of 5 stars valuable information .......2007-05-07

This book provides valuable informaion for those who want to pursue the perfectly built and positioned home. The concepts are fasinating and could be somewhat easy to put into pratice, however, the author uses large, VERY expensivly built homes leaving the impression that only the very wealthy can afford such superior design. This is unfortunate. I do believe that some the most basic concepts can be put into play in most homes it would just take some imagination and determination.

4 out of 5 stars starts the gears turning.......2007-01-09

A good browsing book to get in the mindset of looking at homes with a keen eye. Not overwhelming in details (which is what I wanted at the moment,) it gave me a good basic set of tools to begin thinking about why I liked or disliked the places where i've lived, practical functionality, and alternative design. If you really want to delve headfirst into the subject of patterns of space, the book that this was based off of would be best. If it's just a little nudge towards inspiration, this is a good bet.

5 out of 5 stars Great place to start!.......2007-01-09

This is a great overview for learning the basic principles of home design. We were able to look back at the various places we lived and understand why we loved or hated certain elements which gives us a better understanding of what to aim for in our next house.

5 out of 5 stars Architecture in a nutshell.......2007-01-05

I bought this book while shopping for a house. It contains beautifuly distilled information, and illustrative photographs. There is so much information that it takes some dedication to read the whole book. I don't know if a textbook-educated architect would agree with the info, but it all makes great sense to me. Many of the examples describe homes on very large lots. Living in Los Angeles, I don't know many people with such large lots. I'm sure that in other parts of the country, the examples are more pertinent.

Non-western scripts are a challenge to western coin collectors. Plant challenges you to learn Arabic script with short, to the point chapters followed by amusing exercises (solutions in the back of the book). Those who are only interested in modern coins can just take chapters 1 to 8 and 23 to 26. Plant is not just knowledgeable about Arabic, but also about coins.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good not great.......2006-09-14

This book is okay for the novice Hasselblad user, of which I am one. Since it tries to be all things to all people, you have to wade through a lot to find what you are looking for. More than a bit pricy for what it is.

    1 out of 5 stars Very dissapointing!.......2005-01-05

I bought this based upon other reviews. I was grossly dissapointed. This book is a product of the 60s - 70s that's been added to as Hassleblad releases new lines. How can a $60 USD book on Hasselblad contain NO photographs of any Hasselblad equipment? It's all line drawings and the better part of them are relatively primative based on today's standards.

The book does cover most of the body lines and accessories. But I found the narrative to be brief and the accompanying illustrations to be difficult to see - especially for the older gear. The book covers some technique but I didn't buy this book to learn technique. If you've ever used a Magic Lantern camera guide you'll think you've bought an antique with this book. I immediately returned this book.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2004-11-13

This is a great book if you have new or nearly new hasselblad equipment. Example of lack of details are very little information about the older prisem finders and he does not even mention the 21 mm extension tube, which by the way works great with my 80 cf lens.

He sounds like he works for Hasselblad often mentions you should upgrade your equipment.

Did have a good section on flash and exposure though. I am now looking to buy an older book from ebay that covers the older hasselblad stuff with proper details.

3 out of 5 stars The standard Hasselblad book.......2004-06-21

Hasselblad cameras have good and bad points. The good points are that they are, through longevity and marketing as well as other qualities, the standard in pro medium format photography, and Hasselblad system items can be rented worldwide: they are reasonably durable, have good optical quality, and lots of system accessories are available. No other medium format system boasts a fifth of all the various items available for the Hasselblad system. Because they are the standard most photographers understand them. Because working pros favor them, prestiege buyers, wannabes, and dilettantes do so as well.

The downside is that they are heavy, noisy, expensive (especially for the lenses which are not so much better than their Japanese counterparts), and can be damaged easily by careless or untutored handling: they are somewhat awkward: and their 6x6 cm format is simply out of sync with standard print sizes (with a 1.2:1 aspect ratio) or 35mm practice (1.5:1), leading to never utilizing the whole negative in practice.

This volume is to all intents and purposes the official unofficial Hasselblad manual of practice. You are getting "100% Standard Tech" here:this is the fountainhead of Hasselblad doctrine. If you've committed to using Hasselblad cameras the Hasselblad way, this book shows you how to do it. You won't find any criticism of any current Hasselblad equipment or any objective "vis-a-vis" here.

If you are looking into whether or not you should choose Hassselblad, this book is essential provided you keep the above in mind. Other books will provide information on other systems. Hasselblad is definitely not for everyone, even everyone without financial impediments to doing so. Large format, 35mm, other MF SLRs and the classic twin lens reflex are all better choices for some uses-and users. However, if you want a visually conspicuous status symbol, it's tough to go very wrong with Hasselblad.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-02-08

This is a thorough review of the Hasselblad system and a great book on general photography as well. It is particularly useful for someone who has a basic camera system and plans to rent additional components as needed. The only criticism is that the illustrations (often wonderful color and black and white photographs by Mr. Wildi) are not referenced directly in the captions. Rather than using "Top, Left, Right, Upper Left "etc., the captions state "the other" image. What other image? You can figure it out fairly quickly, but this needs changing in future additions. I blame the editors.

Perhaps Mr. Wildi could write a section on studio lighting, flash metering and the Visatec system in the next addition as well?

Thank you Mr. Wildi for this wonderful book. It serves as a reference manual, is a joy to read, and is aesthetically enriching: A work of art.

5 out of 5 stars Before AKIRA, there was MAI.......2005-11-05

MAI, Psychic girl is truly on of the classic mangas that has somehow been forgotten in the US mainstreaming of Japanese manga and anime. Released in the late 80s/early 90s Mai was one of the first hugely successful B&W manga comic books.

The story itself is a rater simple but entertaining take. Mai is a young school girl who has started developing psychic abilities. She is the target of a sinister secret society who hope to harness her power (and others like her) to obtai world domination. Much like Otomo's AKIRA, Mai encounters other people who possess simlar powers to her and she must deal them.

The artwork is by famous manga artist Ryoichi Ikegami who is ebst known for his work on Crying Freeman. The style is not your typical cutesy sailor moon/dragon ball Z manga art, opting for a more realistic, sometimes western comic book approach to storytelling.

Overall MAI is a true classic a a fantastic story. One worth reading!

3 out of 5 stars Strong art, weak story.......2004-04-28

This tells the story of Mai, a Japanese school girl who becomes the target of vague organizations of powerful conspirators who want to use her for her psychic powers.

The art is interesting, and often quite attractive, although a bit of gratuitous soft core jailbait porn is occasionally thrown in. While the quality of the artwork is generally high, I was less impressed than some reviewers by the art in the fighting scenes, of which there are many; it was often difficult to follow what was happening. There are some elements of the art also which seem to make no sense; Mai is described as having inherited her powers through her mother, who was the latest in a line of psychics going back for centuries and linked to a particular Japanese temple and village, yet the mother, when she is shown, has entirely Caucasian features.

The story takes off a bit slowly, and the characters aren't entirely developed.

This volume is the first of three, although the other two, strangely enough, don't seem to be on Amazon yet. Unfortunately, the sequels aren't as good as this one. The characters change suddenly, Mai and her enemies acquire new powers without warning when it forwards the plot, and the ultimate evil plan of Mai's enemies, when it is revealed, is utterly unbelievable.

I would give this volume on its own a mild recommendation, but it isn't really complete on its own and I can't recommend the full set.

    4 out of 5 stars good read.......2003-05-27

This book is about Mai, a girl who happens to be a very powerful psychokinetic. She doesn't think her abilities are a very big deal, although she is careful to hide them from others. Still, she uses them mainly to keep boredom at bay. Unfortunately, a secret organization is after her and other psychokinetics, so that they can use her for military purposes. Her dad, a man skilled at martial arts, as other ideas, however, and does his best to keep her safe.

The artwork in this book was unexpected for me, much more realistic than anything I've seen in other manga works. However, it wasn't consistantly good artwork, and some of the characters tended to look odd, as another reviewer noted. The story itself was very riveting, and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more about Mai, and I'm looking forward to the next volume.

5 out of 5 stars excellent- all manga should be like this.......2000-05-03

I had read other manga before, but this one totally blows everything else I have ever read away. At first, the main character Mai, is a bit reluctant to accept her destiny as protectress of the earth, but when she starts using her powers to battle, it becomes very gripping and hard to put down. With the exception of some nude scenes that had no place in this manga, I found this book to be extremely entertaining and nonoffensive.

5 out of 5 stars Mai oh Mai!.......2000-01-04

This book was amazing. It really got me into most anime and manga things, and it's easy to see why. Gripping storyline, beautiful art...I really felt involved. Kudo and Ikegami are much applauded. Oh by the way, mail me if you find any other comparable manga things, please.

        Book Description

Dr Zoltan Dienes is a world-famous theorist and tireless practitioner of the 'new mathematics' - an approach to mathematics learning which uses games, songs and dance to make it more appealing to children. Holder of numerous honorary degrees, Dr Dienes has had a long and fruitful career, breaking new ground and gaining many followers with his revolutionary ideas of learning often complex mathematical concepts in such fun ways that children are often unaware that they are learning anything. This is an honest account of an academic radical, covering his sometimes unconventional childhood in Hungary, France, Germany and Britain, his peripatetic academic career, his successes and failures and his personal affairs. Occasionally sad or moving, frequently amusing and always fascinating, this autobiography shares some of the intelligence, spirit and humanity that have made Dr Dienes such a landmark figure in mathematics education. A 'must-read' for anyone with a professional interest in the field, this is also an absorbing and frank book for anyone interested in the life of a man of ideas who was not afraid to take on the might of the traditionalist educational establishment.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling and Unpredictable.......2007-07-26

This book kept me involved until the very end. I was immediately drawn in to the story and couldn't help but read this novel in only two or three long sittings. It is very fast-paced and somewhat disjointed to add to the suspense. The reader is able to view the events from varying vantage points, with some key passages repeated from a different character's point of view. It reads like a Palahniuk in its structure and caculated detail -- it is evident that the author has reasearched many topics in order to give the story an authentic context. Highly reccommended -- excellent debut!

        4 out of 5 stars Deft Debut.......2007-05-08

While pre-ordering Palahniuk's, Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey, I stumbled across this debut novel. I read the three Amazon reviews, and then Googled the author's name to get the 411 on Mr. Weinberg. Turns out that he's fairly young, published the book himself, and writing is only a hobby for him. That was enough for me to take the $16.98 gamble on Rule Number 5.

The first 100+ pages I read in one sitting, which is extremely rare for me as I typically only read while making the short commute to and from work. "Entrancing" is the first adjective that comes to mind.

The remainder of the novel was equally entertaining, and I can see why another reviewer mentioned traces of other great authors. There were definitely some insightful and educational parts which reminded me of Douglas Coupland's writing style (much more plot development here though). Rule Number 5 doesn't offer any dark, mind blowing plot twists, but I noticed specks of Chuck Palahniuk as well... mainly with the repetition and anarchy.

This story probably won't change your life. Although, if you're looking to get lost in a well composed, suspenseful, (and somewhat) transgressional fiction novel, then add Rule Number 5 to your shopping cart now.

5 out of 5 stars Rule Number 5.......2007-03-18

Fulfilling, like a warm cup of milk.
A seat of your pants thrill ride through the mind of a genius.

5 out of 5 stars Rule Number 5 an instant classic.......2007-03-16

Weinberg here initiates a new trend in the modern American novel, wearing his influences on his sleeve almost as easily as he obliterates them. Traces of Copeland, Palahniuk and Hammet all make appearences, but only to be sacrificied on the alter of Weinberg's creativity. The story both deconstructs the problematics of storytelling in the post-modern world, but also blazes a new path for literary narrative that is at the same time self-assured and negating. The authors use of profanity highlights the utter banality of language, while the reliance on dialouge to move the narrative illustrates how trapped we are in the insipid matrix of language. This Cartesian dualism is then mocked by the monophonic nature of Weinberg' story, but perplexingly reinforced by the context of the sotry. Overall Weinbergs maidan voyage on the sea of literature is anything but ordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Rock solid, from start to finish........2007-03-16

        Book Description

It was the Rumor of the New Millennium for the entire hockey world. The biggest story of the 2000-2001 National Hockey League season began as a whisper in Pittsburgh, and then raged across the sports pages and web sites of North America as the holidays neared. Mario Lemieux, the super-sized star of the National Hockey League driven too young from the game at which he excelled, was contemplating a comeback. In the wake of an interminable string of ailments and injuries, Super Mario had left the game in 1997 and limped into the Hockey Hall of Fame, barely into his thirties. By age thirty-four, he was president of the Pittsburgh Penguins, once again resurrecting a foundering franchise, this time in a suit. Ironically, accepting that responsibility only heightened his desire to address some unfinished business...on the ice. Healthier than he had been at any time in the last five years of his playing career, No.66 confirmed his return to the NHL ice wars, a belated Christmas present for Pittsburgh and the hockey world. Few could imagine the impact he would have on the league. From his early days as a hockey prodigy to the brilliant rise of his career (and its unexpected fall due to injury) and finally his return in a blaze of glory, Mario Lemieux: Over Time is the definitive book on one of the greatest hockey players of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Why Is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's Swimming Pool?: Ho.......2005-03-18

What do hockey players do with the Stanley Cup after winning the most cherished trophy ? That's what author Kevin Allen wrote about in the book Why is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux's Swimming Pool?: How Winners Celebrate With the World's Most Famous Cup. With each player getting twenty-four hours to spend with Lord Stanley's Cup the cup comes back with a lot of bizarre memories.
The book takes you through the long journeys that they Stanley Cup endures. It takes you to many foreign countries like Russia and Canada, to the pool of Mario Lemieux or even to Cornell with Joe Nieuwendyk to visit his blind college professor. The book describes how meaningful winning the Stanley Cup is to hockey players. Long after the final game the players still have the same emotions with the Stanley Cup as they did the day they raised it over their heads. The book includes many players stories of when they won the Cup from the likes of Maurice Richard to more recently Brett Hull.
I highly recommend to those hockey fanatics who just can't get enough hockey. This book defiantly makes you want to keep reading and once you start you will not be able to put it down. Every time I see the precious trophy I always think back to this book and all the unusual things that the athletes did with the Stanley Cup.

        5 out of 5 stars a pretty funny book.......2003-09-10

this book was pretty funny to hear all the stories of the stanley cup it makes you laugh when you see people drink out of it to it also makes you think what you would do if you ever won the cup its great

5 out of 5 stars WOW, what a cool book!.......2002-09-25

This is one of the coolest books I have ever read. Being a hockey nut, I just ate these stories up like no tomorrow. You don't need to be a crazy fan like myself to enjoy the stories though. The Stanley Cup is definately the most well traveled hunk of silver around and its story is still being written. The Cup means so much more that just winning and this book illustrates just how important it is to people and just how uncontrollably happy they can become when they raise it over their heads. One of these days, when I get my day with the Stanley Cup, I hope to be featured in a book just like this.
In general, this book is a unique collection of fascinating stories that have been compiled for over one hundred years. No hockey fan should be without this and I highly recommend it too anyone who is looking for an easy going and enjoyable book.

        5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2002-06-06

If you are a fan of hockey, this is a must! I couldn't put it down. One story after another, after another. Next time you see the Cup, you'll think back to all of the hilarious things the Cup's been through. Five star, double thumbs up!

        5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2001-05-31

What a great way to pass time between playoff rounds. Mr Allen had done his research. I can't watch Bill Clement without laughing so hard from his recollection of the Flyers Victory parade. A touching story is also included about Rocket Richard and his famed input on the Cup lore. Also a surprising and VERY sentimental touch of Pat Verbeek's day with the Cup in 1999. It's nice to see guys like him with even more reverence for the Cup.

One of those rare athletes whose skills raise the level of his sport, Mario Lemieux, who twice led the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup, was a courageous and charismatic presence from the moment he skated onto the ice; he deposited his first NHL shot into the net, and never looked back. No defense could stop him, not even Hodgkin's disease. He forechecked just about everything that stood between him and his goals--both on and off the ice. Lemieux retired in 1997, his place in the hockey pantheon assured, and The Final Period, with its dazzling display of text and photographs, is a brilliant tribute to his career.

I like to call this book an "Adult picture book" because of the easy read and scrapbook of great pictures. I only wish it was written a few years later so Mario could tell us about his plans to save the Pittsburgh Penguins. This is one athlete that has never been arrested, has never done drugs, has been happily married to his wife (and he has only had one wife), and he's not going to go bankrupt anytime soon. Hats off to a great athlete and an awesome man.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book to find the definition of a true class act........2000-01-02

This book is the best book I've ever read on an athlete. It gives plenty of information throughout his career and really shows you what a class act Mario is. Not only is it detailed well, but the pictures are awesome. If you doubt Mario as being one of the best athletes out there, read this book. You'll see why he earned the name Super Mario.

Mario Lemieux: The Final Period is a very nice book, mainly made up of photos of "Le Magnifique". The book has few words, but countless wonderful photographs. It features many game-action photos of Mario during his years as a Pittsburg Penguin, as well as personal photos of him and his family, and even hockey action photos of Mario before his NHL playing days. A must have for a Mario Lemieux fan.
