5 out of 5 stars Great Travel Companion..........2006-06-05

For those of you interested in the praticality of this as a travel companion, trust me, it works. The maps are not enough alone to find buildings in their respective cities but between knowing their general locations and addresses you can easily navigate your way to find them. I carried this book in my pocket around Europe and can say first hand that it was the best travel guide I had. A must for any Architect or student planning on traveling.

5 out of 5 stars So Many Buildings In Such A Little Book.......2006-03-27

When the original Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture was released in My 2004, several reviews were more enticed with the size of the tome in contrast to its contents. Frankly, I was put off by the price tag (albeit well deserved).

However, the recently released Travel Edition of the tome has become one of the essential resources of my library.

First, don't be put off of the fact that the softcover book is referred to as a Travel Edition as it contains a wealth of projects (subdivided by continents then countries). For each project there is a single project photo, project address, and the project architect. With each building a sentence or two states the significance of the project to 'Contemporary World Architecture' (an overly broad subject in itself).

Second, there is a grand diversity to the projects profiled in the Travel Edition in terms of project types and locations. I haven't come across another book to date that offers such a variety of projects within the covers.

Lastly, the Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture Travel Edition provides project insights and narratives that are free of any bias or criticism. The lack of both is something that is rarely found in a subject as subjective as architecture, and is welcomed in this context.

The Atlas suffers from a minor foreseeable problems. The book limits itself to projects that were complete as of the time when the book went to press. Any building completed during its printing or afterwards suffers the fate of being excluded from the Atlas; perhaps it/they will be included in future editions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for an Excellent Price.......2006-03-21

I think this is a book EVERY architect student should posses as a reference. It contains a large selection of references from all over the world. In comparison to the large version, which is rather costly for a student, this version contains brief descriptions and its a good size. I just wish there was a version on DISK!!!

5 out of 5 stars So many buildings, so little time.......2006-01-30

Superb little book. The only problem is how to see all the buildings in it before you die.

5 out of 5 stars A great little book, esp for European buildings.......2005-12-23

This compact travel guide is a good bet, especially for European buildings. For the US try the latest edition of The Architecture Traveler.

The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture--so massive that it comes in its own plastic carrying case--is one of the rare publishing events that lives up to its hype. The book showcases 1,052 buildings completed since January 1998 with thousands of well-chosen color photographs plans, elevations, and cross-sections. Major elements of each project are described in elegantly succinct texts. Rather than simply pay lip service to the concept of "world" architecture, this book ranges throughout 75 countries on six continents. And although the big names in the field are here--Rafael Moneo and Herzog & De Meuron are each represented by nine projects; Tadeo Ando with eight, Frank Gehry with six--the focus is on the ingenuity and diversity of contemporary architecture, regardless of the fame of its creator.

The book's global view embraces many approaches, including experimental construction, neo-modernism, postmodernism, reinterpreted vernacular architecture and lingering traces of the International Style. While virtually every building type is included, from factories to museums, from lookout towers to train stations, the largest and most creative category is single family housing. Selected (as were all the projects) by a panel of leading architects, critics, scholars and others, these homes offer a tantalizing sense of what is possible, even on a modest budget. Grouped by country, the residences establish a sense of local context--from the elegant use of Scandinavian wood to the imaginative use of narrow plots of land in Tokyo. Fully indexed, with an array of maps and world data charts, The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture is destined to serve as a unique reference tool. But the geographic organization encourages you to just open the book anywhere and make a discovery--perhaps the surreal vision of Ake Larsson's Icehotel (carved from ice and snow), or the forest of Cor-ten steel pipes Jose ABP Forjaz used in the Mbuzini Memorial, or the startling shed forms of Rick Joy's Tubac House. --Cathy Curtis

Book Description

The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture presents a global survey of the most outstanding works of contemporary architecture from around the world completed in the last five years. Organized geographically and illustrated with global, regional and sub-regional maps locating each building, the book illustrates more than 1,000 completed buildings, and includes some of the most influential projects as well as many lesser-known buildings from around the world. Sections on World Data, Building Data and Architect's Biographies build up a detailed picture of the influences on contemporary architecture today. Every building type, from the largest publicly-funded art museums and airports to private houses, is covered, and each project is illustrated with colour photographs, line drawings and a descriptive text.

    Book Description

Television emerged as the dominant mass medium in the United States during the era that President John F. Kennedy termed the New Frontier. Although television would soon be decried as "a vast wasteland," during this era artists began to engage with the medium in a sustained manner for the first time--and not just as an object to be pictured, but as a system that demanded a renegotiation of the relationship between the realms of art and life. The New Frontier is the catalogue of the first exhibition to examine the impact of television on the visual arts in the United States at a crucial period in the development of both. With a lively selection of nearly seventy-five paintings, sculptures, installations, films, videos, photographs, and documents from the United States and Europe, it explores how twenty artists, including Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Lee Friedlander, Dennis Hopper, Edward Kienholz, Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, Robert Rauschenberg, Wolf Vostell, Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann, and Garry Winogrand, responded to the increased prominence of television in daily life during the early 1960s. Working in modes and styles as varied as collage and assemblage, Pop Art, Color Field Painting, Fluxus, Performance Art, and documentary photography, these artists engaged with the perceptual, technological, and social changes catalyzed in part by the emergence of television as the dominant mass medium.

4 out of 5 stars Good but with some limitations.......2006-03-16

The book is very good and very complete. I only see 2 problems! First, all the pictures are in black & white. Even the paintings wich takes off a bit of the magic of the camera work. The second thing, is that the information doesn't seam to be very well organized. I'm talking about the subtitles. We're presented with all the images in a row (from each 2 pages) and then, at the end of the second page, we have all the subtitles together.

In the end, it is very good for the money that's asked for it but not too good...

5 out of 5 stars All the others are friggin' bastiches!.......2004-02-17

If you're just going to get one book about the Main Man, be sure to get this one -- the Last Czarnian. It contains mind-blowing art by the quintessential Lobo artist, Simon Bisley and laugh-out loud words from Batman scribe Alan Grant. The situations are off-the-scale riot. Lobo, feared intergalactic bounty hunter must bring in his school teacher to Vril Dox, along the way they meet all sorts of crazy characters. In the end, we'll know why the book is titled the Last Czarnian.

Lobo was originally meant as a send-up/spoof to all those Marvel/Image grim and gritty characters like Cable, Wolverine and Punisher, but he the joke was lost to the fanboys back in the '90s and they (including me) lapped up his murderous, over-the-top antics. Just like the Main Man himself, this book kicks ass!

5 out of 5 stars The Main Man at his Fragginý Best!.......2003-06-23

No other Lobo story produced holds a candle to Lobo: The Last Czarnian. Keith Giffen and Alan Grant's dialog is inspired as well as laugh out loud hilarious. Simon Bisley's artwork is amazing. It's truly his best art, and some of the best art ever published by DC.

The story is deceptively simple. Lobo must transport Mz. Tribb- his 4th grade teacher and author of his scathing unauthorized biography- to Vril Dox. Lobo has promised to deliver Mz. Tribb alive, and Logo never breaks a promise. The worst news is Lobo would like nothing more than to kill his former schoolteacher. He vents his homicidal rage in a series of hilarious adventures. Four comic books are reprinted in this volume and by the end of book 2, Lobo is being hunted by

The Legion of Decency- psychotic, tea-sipping grannies out for blood
A convoy of space truckers -their leader is an Elvis impersonator
The Sons of Lobo- biker Lobo wannabes
Oneida Police Swat Team- who want to kill Lobo after he kills their police chief
Storm Troupers of the Pan-Galactic Demolition Dance Company- desperate to pay Lobo back for upstaging them during their chainsaw ballet.

During his adventures Lobo also runs afoul of the Orthography Commandos, a group of hooded literacy loonies that hold lethal spelling bees.

This story was far ahead of it's time. Originally published back in 1990, it's every bit as relevant, irreverent, and hilarious today as the day it was published.

---Also, a must have for Garth Ennis fans!---

5 out of 5 stars How do you spell "Mutilation"?.......2000-05-28

With dialogue by Alan Grant (Batman:Anarky, No Mans Land, etc) and art by Simon Bisley (Slaine), this comic is bound to be a success.

Lobo is a lunatic bountyhunter (more like bountyslayer) who has killed everyone on his birthplanet, just to be unique! The problem is that his old schoolteacher has survived and he has to protect her. The story is set in the DC Universe paralell to the Legion of Superheroes. Parts of the plot includes chainsaw ballet and a murderous spelling contest.

This is a good comic book and is recommendet to those who have read "Hitman" and such comics. Try this one instead, the original.

                    5 out of 5 stars I loved it but..........2007-05-23

I mulled over this book for a long time thinking it was some fanboy "history" lesson, but I broke down and bought it anyway. I was so thrilled after I started reading it to see that it was all from the players' words! I loved reading about the guys from the 40s all the way to now. It is a inspirational book and it makes me proud to be a fan even though I was not born into hockey. No I was not a recent convert or riding their tails when they won, I started with the in the 80's (yes when they were not at their all time best). Anyway, the only thing about the book I was disappointed with is it did not have Gordie Howe's words (even though he wrote his own book, he could have something in it), Larionov, Federov, Vernon, and many others who did not contribute. Of course, it could have been the authors choice to not include them so I hope there will be a volume two!!! Still, this is a fabulous book to have if you really are a fan of the Red Wings and a fan of hockey.

5 out of 5 stars For my daughter.......2007-01-11

My daughter started into hockey while going to Northern Michigan University. She then got hooked on the Wings. I was hoping that Art's book would introduce her to the culture of the Red Wings. She loves it. Thanks Art, miss you on the radio and hope you land on your feet soon.

5 out of 5 stars This one is keeping me very happy in bed........2006-11-23

What a great read! As the youngest daughter growing up in Detroit, I grew up in a family that loved professional hockey and college football . . . I watched from the fringes. Hockey did intrigue me, but I never really got hooked into the sport. As I went through the bookstore recently I spotted this book on the Redwings. I saw that it was individual stories and I thought that might be a great way to get a taste for what I may have missed, since my family goes on and on about the Wings. So glad I made the purchase. What a wonderful read. A few stories each night before bed, what a great way to retire. Each one is insightful and I was really drawn in. Guess what, I think I'm hooked . . . I will now be attending some live games. Go wings!!!

                    4 out of 5 stars A Fine Retrospective.......2005-05-29

Despite the mindless drivelling of the "Reader" who referred to this book as "propaganda," it's actually a well-written and fascinating look at one of the NHL's most successful franchises. The first post-1967 team to capture the Stanley Cup, the only NHL team to defeat the Soviet Red Army Team during 1ts 1976 tour, the first expansion team to have members elected to the NHL Hall of Fame, and the only expansion team to have made appearances in seven Stanley Cup finals in its first thirty years of existence, the Flyers certainly have a glorious and entertaining history despite "only" winning two Stanley Cups. As for Flyers fans being "pie-eyed zombies," I'm willing to bet "Reader" (maybe he needed help sounding out the big words and that's what accounts for the bitter tone of his review) is too much of a cowardly little boy to have actually ventured into Philadelphia to conduct his research. Ignore his axe grinding. (And by the way, "Reader," the film SLAPSHOT was inspired by the Johnstown Jets, not the Flyers. But neither hockey knowledge nor reading seems be exactly your strong suit, does it?) This is a fun book for fans of the Flyers, their players, and NHL hockey in general.

                    2 out of 5 stars Propaganda.......2000-03-25

This so-called momentous book is nothing but a mouthpiece for more Flyers propaganda. The employees and fans of this franchise have a maddening (and misplaced) smugness about them, and this tome does nothing to dispell that. Considering that the team hasn't won squat since 1975, the book leads you to believe that the Flyers are the Yankees or Cowboys of hockey. The book does not dwell on the disastrous effect the Bullies had on the sport, inspiring the classic movie "Slapshot". It also leaves out the fact that 99 percent of the fans are pie-eyed zombies who would follow Bob Clarke off a cliff if he led them there. Someone needs to do a true expose of this vastly overrated franchise, which has managed to milk 2 lousy Cups for 25 years now.

5 out of 5 stars Flyers fans everywhere need this book~.......2000-03-20

I will be the first to admit that I am not the ultimate hockey fanatic. I don't know a lot about the sport, but I do like to watch when I can and the team I like to watch is the Philadelphia Flyers. I can still remember 1975 when they won the Stanley Cup.

This book from Sports Publishing Inc. is a great piece of work and the author has certainly does his homework researching the players and the moments that have made this hockey franchise a great one in the annals of the NHL.

Players like Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Eric Lindros, Rick Tocchet, Ron Hextall, Pete Peeters and so many others are included in the one a kind book, and that only the first chapter. Chapter 2 gives you the best, worst and most unusual in the Flyer Franchise history.

Chapter 3 is a chronological listing the 50 momentous events in the Flyers history and the appendices give a listing of the career stats for the greatest players. Like so many other books from Sports Publishing, this is another winner!

The second in a series of books written by hockey's most authoritative author, Stan Fischler, examines the storied history of the Boston Bruins. Formatted like his first book for SPI, The Greatest Players and Moments of the Philadelphia Flyers, Fischler's Bruins book contains all of Boston hockey's most famous names -- Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, Eddie Shore, Milt, Schmidt, John Bucyk, and many others. Of the "Original Six" NHL clubs, only the Montreal Canadiens have a better all-time winning percentage than the Boston Bruins. Stories and trivia about all five of the Bruins' Stanley Cup championship teams are also included.

I'm not the biggest Fischler fan out there (he tends to write in empty platitudes), but this book is definitely worth checking out. Some of his rankings are kooky (Bucyk over Espo, Neely not in the top 20, saying that Tiny Thompson was the best goalie in Bruins history aside from Frankie Brimsek even though he rated both Gerry Cheevers and Ed Johnston ahead of Thompson), but that would be the case with any such list. It's a great generator for discussion, and the bios for each listed person have some neat anecdotes. There are no new revelations about Ray Bourque or Bobby Orr, but there's good information about some of the old timers like Bill Cowley, Cooney Weiland, and Frank Frederickson. If you're a fan of the Bruins, this is essential. If you're a fan of hockey history, it's also worth picking up.

                    Book Description

Stan Fischler, the dean of American hockey journalists and best-selling author of more than 60 books on hockey, profiles the heroes of Hockeytown in Detroit Red Wings' Greatest Moments and Players. One of the National Hockey League's "Original Six, " few teams in professional hockey have enjoyed more success than the franchise in Detroit. Among the players Fischler glorifies are the immortal Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio, and Sid Abel, all players whose numbers reside on banners in the rafters of Joe Louis Arena. Fischler also writes in-depth stories about current stars such as Steve Yzerman and Brendan Shanahan, as well as Detroit's highly successful coach, Scotty Bowman. This book is a must for any sports fan's library.

                    2 out of 5 stars Eh..........2004-06-08

Stan Fischler is touted as "the dean of American hockey journalists", but as Fischler himself says in his comparison of Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe, don't confuse *most prolific* with *greatest*. What seems like a promising book about one of the NHL's most storied franchises is fettered by typical Fischler weak writing and superficial analysis chock full of meaningless superlatives and platitudes.

The nadir of this mess is Fischler's explanation of why Gordie Howe was a greater hockey player than Wayne Gretzky. While I happen to think Gretzky was greater I understand there is an argument to be made for Howe; Fischler just does a very poor job of making it. Any arguement that Howe was better has to be based on Howe's undeniably superior longevity and all around game. However, aside from some token comments about Howe's versatility, Fischler is content to rely on unmitigated nostalgia for "old time hockey" and Howe's fighting ability - spending nearly a quarter of the piece on pugilistics.

He also implies that Mark Messier carried Gretz because Messier won two Cups without Gretzky, apparently not realizing that the same could be said of Howe and Red Kelly, who won four Cups without Mr. Hockey. He also points out that Gretzky and the Rangers never made the playoffs after Messier bolted for Vancouver, omitting that Messier's Canucks also missed the postseason and were actually one of the worst teams in the league during most of the Moose's three years in BC. Fischler also neglects to note that while each won four Cups, the first of Howe's was won primarily without Gordie as he was recovering from a near fatal head injury, playing only one game (in which the Wings were skunked 5-0).

The main draw of the book - the top 50 greatest Detroit players - is littered with questionable selections and a lack of explanation of why the players were ranked where they were. The most dubious choice was John Bucyk. The Chief is a Hall of Famer and certainly belonged on Boston's top 50 list, but he played only 104 games for the Wings and scored a whopping 11 goals and 30 points. Were Bucyk's meager contributions in that year and half really better than a decade of Marty Pavelich, described elsewhere in the book as arguably the NHL's all time best defensive forward but somehow not deemed worthy of the top 50? Other kooky picks include Luc Robitaille and the omission of Kris Draper.

That's not to say the book is without positives. It does offer plenty of anecdotes about a wide array of players and moments from a decorated organization, including several eye witness accounts of the Howe/Kennedy incident that nearly ended Howe's career and life. It also provides some short interviews/bios on Detroit suits like Jack Adams, Scotty Bowman, and Jimmy Devellano plus some old timers that are worth reading.

I enjoyed Fischler's similar Boston Bruins book, but as a hardcore Detroit fan it's possible that I was more apt to notice the errors in this tome. I wouldn't recommend it unless one is a Wings completist.
