Book Description

Bare, stark swimming pools - those rectangular concrete holes in the ground surrounded by a chain-link fence - are going the way of the dinosaurs. Pool owners (and there are 7 million of them across North America) have begun to see the pool and the area around it as an outdoor living space, a place for entertaining a crowd or relaxing alone. In response to this hot, new trend, gardener and landscape designer Catriona Tudor Erler has written POOLSCAPING, a one-of-a-kind handbook overflowing with inspiring ideas and practical advice on how to make your swimming pool the lovely, welcoming centerpiece of your property.

Erler takes readers step by step through the poolscaping process, whether starting from scratch or renovating an existing pool. She begins with choosing the best location for the pool and designing (or refurbishing) the deck and edging that will surround it. She presents a host of ideas for dramatic pool lighting, including underwater options. The fencing chapter addresses choosing styles as well as safety issues and even how to disguise a fence with plantings.

Erler explores design options for building or renovating a spa adjacent to the pool, as well as how to incorporate furnishings, pergolas, and pool houses into the poolscape. A plant directory features the best poolside plants, with a focus on varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs that are low maintenance and look attractive throughout the pool season. Erler also offers ideas for outstanding poolside planters and containers for bringing greenery and color right up to the pool.

Illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of outstanding poolscapes, this unique guide demonstrates how any pool owner can transform the pool area into the showpiece of the neighborhood.

4 out of 5 stars what I needed to know.......2007-08-22

This book was an excellent resource for the designer looking to work with swimming pools. The ilustrated examples and artistic tips were an invauable inspiration for sparking the imagination when designing pools. Before reading this I did think of pools as slabs of concrete filled with water, but I believe this book has put far down the path of being able to design elegant swimming pools. I consider this a must read for any architectural designer.

2 out of 5 stars Not a great source for landscaping ideas.......2005-08-09

Based on the description, I believed this book would be full of design ideas and photos of well-landscaped pools. It isn't. If you are looking (as I was) for examples to show a landscaper (or to do it yourself), you should look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2005-04-29

This is one of the not so good books for pools like many many others. I don't know may be it is too hard to write for pools. There are inside some pictures but nothing to catch the eye neither spectacular. THis book was suppouse to guide you how to create your own pool but I have see much better books!
So if you are going to spend money to build a pool keep on searching for another book!

5 out of 5 stars Covers swimming pool decor and appropriate landscaping.......2004-03-04

Transform the swimming pool of a backyard into a Tuscan paradise with tiles and flowering plants, or create a pool with a beach-like presence filled with beach plants: that's the idea of Pool Scaping, a title which covers both swimming pool decor and appropriate landscaping around it. Pool Scaping is a lovely guide which covers the specifics of plants in a water surrounding.

4 out of 5 stars Professional and to the point.......2003-10-15

The writer starts out with "Swimming pools have come a long way from the turquoise water holes surrounded by stark paving. Increasingly pools are being integrated into the design of the house and garden..."

I'm happy to see a book on this topic, especially one written by an accomplished writer and photographer. Many garden swimming pools stand out like a sore thumb - a harsh rectangle of Hollywood blue water with cold tile edges. They're lovely and cool in hot weather, but UGLY. Anything that helps to change or disguise this is all good.

The writer has many suggestions for doing just this. She addresses in depth topics such as decking, enclosures, structures, furniture and plantings. She has researched and offers suggestions for problems such as awkward rocky sites and the need to have an enclosure around the pool that doesn't block the view or make the place look like a prison.

It was good to see a generous number of pages given to plants and plantings - everything from container planting to landscaping the entire site. The writer also focuses on planning ahead when installing a pool or landscaping around it, and on matters relating to the budget. Both are very important and often overlooked..

The writer obviously has an encyclopedic knowledge of her topic and her writing is crisp and to-the-point. She understands the issues facing people who want to integrate their pool into their garden and addresses them directly. Her photographs illustrate her points with relevance and clarity. I'd recommend this book to anyone trying to add some style and class to a garden with a swimming pool.

    Book Description

Bold, innovative, technological marvels, skyscrapers first became part of the nation's landscape of triumphalism during the Gilded Age. In the 20th century, they began to form distinctive skylines, reflections of the unique character of each metropolis. A distinctive piece of Americana, skylines have grown to embody the national character and tradition, a combination of ingenuity, courage, bravado, and the will to accomplish the seemingly impossible, and an expression of the freedom to reach the greatest heights of human experience that has shaped the United States. Skylines: American Cities Yesterday and Today showcases the skylines of 48 great American cities with the brilliant panoramic photographs of Blakeway Worldwide Panoramas. Historical views of these cities, both photographs and detailed maps, reflect the increased importance of civic pride over the past century. Historian M. Hill Goodspeed guides readers through each city, offering atmospheric historical portraits to accompany the vintage images and the stunning contemporary Blakeway images.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd Favorite Christmas gift this year.......2007-01-11

My 11 year old son is very interested in large cities with lots of skyscrapers so when I found this book it was perfect for him. The book contains very interesting historical photos of each city as well as an incredibly beautiful 2-page full color aerial photo. The aerial view is a sight to behold and provides a view of each city that the average person would never see. The recap at the bottom of each photo provides terrific information on buildings and items of interest shown in the photo. This is a great addition to our library of geographic books and one that we will enjoy for many years to come. So what was his favorite Christmas gift? It was the Skylines of the World book by this same author.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and important contribution to American architectural, city planning, and urban studies.......2005-12-05

The oversized, oblong shape of this lovely title will challenge library shelves but lends to display: perfect for the panoramic scenes of American skylines which is the focus of Skylines: American Cities Yesterday And Today. The world's first skyscraper in Chicago was finished in 1885, but skyscrapers have graced almost every large American city since. This celebration provides modern photos of almost fifty such skyscrapers, adding more from around the world and providing historical photos and maps for each city. Personal travel and research combined with these original shots makes Skylines a unique and important contribution to American architectural, city planning, and urban studies.

    4 out of 5 stars Dazzling Skylines.......2005-11-06

Finally a quality photography book on the skylines. I have been waiting on a book like this for some time. This book is very well done, most of the photographs are vivid and just jump off the page. The photographs of Atlanta and Honolulu are especially well done, it seems like you can see forever. The only real qualm I have with this book is that the pictures of the skylines are not consistant, some are up close, some are more current, and some are taken at night. The two skylines I am most familiar with, Houston and Dallas, are represented with daylight photos, that I am appreciative of, but the photo's are too close, both cities have great skylines that stretch out from the city center and give a breathtaking vista, which unfortunitely was not represented. If they had been photographed in the same way as Atlanta I would have been thrilled. I would have liked the creators of this book to have taken all the pictures the same way, in the daylight, high above, and on clear, crisp days. This is a nice book, but it could have been great, I would have been so pleased if all the pictures where as well done and aweinspiring as the pics of Honolulu and Atlanta, now that would have been a five star book and then some. Having said all of this, I do recommend this book to anyone with an interest in architecture and arial photography, you won't be totally disappointed, you'll just be left like me, a bit sad, thinking it could have been better.

Minimum Wage: Book Two is a thoroughly enjoyable twentysomething slice of life. Even though this is the second collection of Bob Fingerman's Minimum Wage stories, it reads well as a stand-alone volume: all of the characters are properly reintroduced and are distinctive enough to immediately engage new readers. The first two of the five chapters deal with protagonists Rob and Sylvia looking for an apartment together in New York City. Anyone who's had a hard time looking for a place to live or who hates to move will find plenty of humor in these pages. The fourth chapter, which centers on a comic-book convention (Rob is a cartoonist), is chock full of funny scenes and comics-industry cameos, which can be pretty darn funny if you're in on the jokes (if you're not up on comics convention humor, though, the chapter may not be as engaging). The volume ends slightly anticlimactically, leaving room for a third book, but don't let that deter you. Minimum Wage is great reading.

          1 out of 5 stars what a shame!.......2003-08-06

This is a very poorly written personal tale that was obviously never actually edited. The error-filled writing, immature perspective, and ridiculous story spoil any help this "writer" could have given to others who would like to live and work in Japan.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!!!.......2002-10-15

"Rising Sunsets" is an excellent first novel exploring love and survival in a new and unfarmilar environment. The reader is captivated by the main character's jorney in facing a series of challenges, and, just as in life, David is sometimes successful and sometimes fails. The reader is surprised by the challenges and alway kept in suspense wondering how David's challenges will next be met. The romantic side of the story is realistic and deep and paints a beautiful picture of a a true affair of the heart. In sum, "Rising Sunsets" is a promising novel, that inspires and provokes the reader to think and seize the moments that make life worth living.

I couldn't put it down! In fact, I havn't! I am on my third read and can not wait to start on it a fourth time! The book is an expertly woven work of love, life and how the two intertwine with one another! Of all the countless books that I have read in my lifetime this one ranks at the top of the list. It is definately one that is on my all time favorite recomend list AND on top of my gift list for people of intellect that like to read as much as I do! If you are looking for a great read to sweep you away from the every day doldrum of life as we know it today...I highly suggest that you latch on to this book as quickly as you can!

A sweet touching story that reminds everyone what it was like to face the real world as an adult for the first time.

          5 out of 5 stars Avid Reader.......2001-07-05

"Rising Sunsets" is a captivating story about a college graduate's first adventure into the real world of working for a living. Although his hopes for the career of his dreams seemed to have been thwarted, David Fletcher fortunately finds new opportunities in a teaching career in a foreign land. This adventure leads David along many torturous paths of life, with unexpected episodes involving personalities of cultures foreign to David, and tumultuous times working within the framework of this foreign culture. This book is rich with dialog and expression of emotion, and this makes for fascinating reading. The reader is kept wondering what in the world will happen next, and many surprises keep the action moving rapidly along. The interplay of several personalities in the book is vidid, and very realistic, making the personalities come to life. All in all "Rising Sunsets" is a very enjoyable and entertaining novel, which has many moments of action causing deep introspection and enjoyment for the reader.

From the obscure tale of a noble family in England that dates to the 14th century to the most recent winners of the Cup, hockey players and team personnel who are, in modern times, allowed one special day with the trophy during their summer of victory.

                          Book Description

Nine future Hall of Famers. The greatest coach of all time, who entered the Hall of Fame long ago. No NHL team has ever had a collection of characters as accomplished as the one the Detroit Red Wings had in 2001-02.

But did it work? Did egos clash? Did they go all the way?

In the tradition of John Feinstein's best-selling A Season on the Brink, Nick Cotsonika will draw back the curtain on one of the most compelling stories in the history of sports. Never before has an NHL team brought together such a dazzling number of big names. Chris Chelios. Sergei Fedorov. Dominik Hasek. Brett Hull. Igor Larionov. Nicklas Lidstrom. Luc Robitaille. Brendan Shanahan. Steve Yzerman. And, of course, legendary coach Scotty Bowman.

With this unprecedented talent comes the potential of unprecedented problems: competition for playing time and limelight, the burden of expectations in a Stanley Cup-crazy place like Detroit, a city that calls itself ``Hockeytown.'' With access to the players and coaches, Cotsonika will be witness to it all, how the players deal with themselves, how they clash with the mercurial Bowman, how they handle being part of the richest payroll in the sport's history, thanks to deep-pocketed, aggressive owner Mike Ilitch. Cotsonika will provide, in sharply engaging fashion, many details of a season in the NHL usually hidden from view.

This stew of unprecedented personalities and pressure is bound to be irresistible to every hockey fan.

3 out of 5 stars Great insight into how this team was put together and inside the locker room........2005-10-12

If you are interested in how the Red Wings put together their all-star hockey team. This is a good book. It is interesting to see how the players intereact with the coaching staff and each other off the ice.
It is a difficult read though because it is written in sort of a "random" mode. Do not really know what the book is supposed to be as it seems like a game play by play at points and them seems like a general manager/player issue play by play.
Almost like a bunch of news articles put together into a book with no clear thread to hang onto throughout. Less a story than an insider recounting of events.
But, if you like the Wings this is an interesting read.

                          5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading.......2003-04-28

I loved this book!!! There was alot of insider info. It was interesting to hear about the behind the scenes deals and negotiations that went on to make this great team. This book did not overdo the stats and scores, etc. like most hockey books do. It was a quick, fun read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have bought several copies for gifts for family and friends.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent backstory.......2003-04-07

This is a really excellent book for Detroit Red Wings fans to read. I read this book a few months ago and I keep thinking about the stories I learned from it. It has a lot of backstory of how they added more players to this already amazing team, like how they signed Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille and Dominek Hasek. It demonstrates why fans love the Detroit Red Wings. It gave a lot of behind the scenes information that the average fan would not know. And there was a lot of information in the book that I don't remember reading in the newspaper when it happened. This book is essential for any Red Wings fan to own because it documents one of the best seasons the Wings ever had, going for their third cup in 6 years. I highly recommend it!

                          2 out of 5 stars Delayed Penalty.......2003-01-24

This book could have been great - but it isn't. If you're wondering about the exact time shots occurred or goals were scored, buy this book. But if you're looking for a behind the scenes view of how this team worked together, DON'T buy this book. Cotsonika's writing style is like a book full of box scores. He mixes past, present and future events in the same paragraph - there's no flow to the story, no drama, no interesting facts. Cotsonika even throws in a couple of self-serving lockerroom moments that have no bearing on the story being told. I really looked forward to reading this book, and I forced myself to finish it, hoping it would eventually get better. My advice? Look in the Free Press archives for Mitch Albom articles about last year's run for the Cup.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic narrative of a season to remember.......2002-09-24

At the start of the 2001-02 season, hockey fans everywhere wondered how in the world would the somewhat retooled Detroit Red Wings' nine future Hall of Famers manage to fit all those egos in the dressing room and come together as a team. There were those who thought the team was too old to go deep into the post season, citing the number of players over 35 on the team while jokingly referring to them as the Gray Wings. As the season progressed, we got our answers, punctuated with an exclamation point. Quite simply, they became a team to chase a common goal - a bright, shiny silver chalice affectionately known as Lord Stanley.

In "Hockey Gods," Nicholas Cotsonika, the hockey writer for the Detroit Free Press, follows the team from their embarrassing and shocking first-round ouster in the 2001 playoffs (the team's earliest exit since 1994), through training camp, the regular season and the Olympics (in which the Wings had 10 players and one prospect representing five countries), culminating in the spectacular playoff run and Stanley Cup victory.

If you are a Red Wing fan, this book should be required reading; however, I think any hockey fan would enjoy reading this book. It gives an excellent inside look at perhaps the best assemblage of talent the NHL has seen on one team in quite some time. And with Curtis Joseph in net replacing the retired Dominik Hasek, Mr. Cotsonika may just have to write a sequel to "Hockey Gods" next year!

Perhaps it's as simple as the colorful uniforms dappling the stark white background, but no sport photographs more beautifully than hockey. Shooting Stars is a collection of the splendid images of the '70s eternally frozen by Lewis Portnoy, the photographer who, with his strobe lights and zoom lenses, revolutionized the capturing of hockey on film. More than just a master of action, Portnoy introduced marvelously detailed, close-up portraits of players in action. Each of the 75 full-page color pictures, all permanently enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, is accompanied by a full page of explanatory text, all of it historical, much of it anecdotal. Some of the more unforgettable prints to check: an ancient and exhausted Gordie Howe, a scarred and bump-faced Bobby Hull, Chuck Lefley tottering precariously on one skate, maskless dinosaur Gump Worsley in the net, iron man Garry Ungar bloodied and bruised, and goalie Jaques Plante taking a face full of flying ice. Portnoy's camera not only preserves the chill, it lets you feel it. --Jeff Silverman

                          Book Description

"A hidden treasure for the hockey world."
Craig Campbell, The Hockey Hall of Fame

"The real excitement in Lewis Portnoy's life began one night 30 years ago, when he witnessed a savage brawl in a now shattered establishment just east of Dogtown (St. Louis)."
                          St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The brawl that changed Lewis Portnoy's life was in a major league hockey game. He had brought a newly bought Nikon to the game, "and I jumped up and started shooting." He became, for 10 great years (1967-1976), the leading photographer of hockey in North America, pioneering new lighting and photography techniques, soon copied by other professionals.

Portnoy's 75 color photographs of National Hockey League players in action represent the birth of modern hockey, after the expansion from the original six-team league. New equipment, colorful goalie masks and uniforms, and a faster, international influence made the spectacle more crowd-pleasing. And! as the league grew, the audience got bigger.

This book is the first to chronicle the opening of that era in hockey, and Lewis Portnoy's photos perfectly complement the descriptive text by Andrew Podnieks. There are essays and player anecdotes about the development of the larger league and the great times that went along with it.

Andrew Podnieks is a hockey historian.

In 1945, the Hockey Hall of Fame began inducting the game's superstars into its pantheon of greats. Among that first group were legends One-Eyed Frank McGee, Georges Vezina, and Lord Stanley of Preston. Since then, every player who has made a tremendous contribution to the game has been so honoured, from Maurice Richard to Johnny Bower to Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. To celebrate the Hall's 10th anniversary at its current location in BCE Place in downtown Toronto, Fenn Publishing and the Hockey Hall of Fame have collaborated with author Andrew Podnieks to produce the most significant, most lavish pictorial and anecdotal celebration of the 324 honoured members in the Hockey Hall of Fame, from that fist list of players in 1945 right up to the current 2003 inductees. Fully illustrated, Honoured Members includes all of hockey's greatest players, from the early legends such as Cyclone Taylor and Hod Stuart, to Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr, and on to Gretzky, Lemieux, and Dale Hawerchuk. Never before has the Hockey Hall of Fame allowed such unprecedented access to its archives, its collections, and its honoured members' lives to celebrate the game and the men who made it the world's most exciting sport. Included are letters of congratulations from the Hall of Fame to newly-elected players, nomination forms from Members of the Selection Committee putting forth new names to add to the list of greats, and private photos from the induction dinners themselves. The history of the Hockey Hall of Fame is also considered, year byyear, from its humble beginnings in name only in 1945 when it was called the International Hockey Hall of Fame, through 1961 when the first Hall of Fame building opened on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), to its present location at Yonge and Front Street in Toronto as a 50,000 square foot museum and entertainment centre, among the most popular tourist destinations in the city. Honoured Members is a must-have book for the casual fan and the devoted follower of the game. - Published with the official license of the Hockey Hall of Fame - Only publication to contain all Honoured Members-Players, Builders, Referees, and Linesmen inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, 1945 to 2003 - Contains many never seen before photos and images from the Hall of Fame's private archives - Published to coincide with Hall of Fame's 10th anniversary at current location

For nearly a third of a century, the Turofsky brothers of Toronto--Nat and Lou--found magic through the lenses of their cameras, particularly when those lenses were focused on hockey and the original six clubs that made up the NHL. Innovators and master craftsmen, their stark black-and-white photos are still haunting more than 60 years after they were taken. This magnificent collection of 73 pictures, culled from more than 21,000 Turofsky negatives archived at the Hockey Hall of Fame, is filled with drama, brutality, and grace--like the sport it's chronicling. In addition to a lively biographical introduction to the brothers, Portraits of the Game presents each photo with detailed information about the time, the players, and the game played. Historically and artistically, this book has the force and fascination of a well-executed power play.

                                  Book Description

Classic Photographs from the Turofsky Collection at the Hockey Hall of Fame

For almost thirty years, from the late 1920s to the mid-1950s, brothers Nat and Lou Turofsky photographed the Original Six hockey teams in action, capturing forever many of the greatest moments in hockey history, like Maurice Richard shattering "breakproof" Herculite glass and Bill Barilko flying through the air as he wins the Stanley Cup in overtime.

Portraits of the Game contains the finest photographs in the history of sports photojournalism.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift for true fans of the game.......2000-01-07

A truly amazing collection of hockey action made more compelling and awe-inspiring by the almost total lack of protective equipment. These still photos are action packed and full of movement. I gave this book to a hockey coach who reported with all sincerity that it was his favorite Christmas present this year.
