Poolscaping: Gardening and Landscaping Around Your Swimming Pool and Spa
Catriona Tudor Erler Manufacturer: Storey Publishing, LLC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1580173853 |
Book Description
Bare, stark swimming pools - those rectangular concrete holes in the ground surrounded by a chain-link fence - are going the way of the dinosaurs. Pool owners (and there are 7 million of them across North America) have begun to see the pool and the area around it as an outdoor living space, a place for entertaining a crowd or relaxing alone. In response to this hot, new trend, gardener and landscape designer Catriona Tudor Erler has written POOLSCAPING, a one-of-a-kind handbook overflowing with inspiring ideas and practical advice on how to make your swimming pool the lovely, welcoming centerpiece of your property.
Erler takes readers step by step through the poolscaping process, whether starting from scratch or renovating an existing pool. She begins with choosing the best location for the pool and designing (or refurbishing) the deck and edging that will surround it. She presents a host of ideas for dramatic pool lighting, including underwater options. The fencing chapter addresses choosing styles as well as safety issues and even how to disguise a fence with plantings.
Erler explores design options for building or renovating a spa adjacent to the pool, as well as how to incorporate furnishings, pergolas, and pool houses into the poolscape. A plant directory features the best poolside plants, with a focus on varieties of flowers, vines, and shrubs that are low maintenance and look attractive throughout the pool season. Erler also offers ideas for outstanding poolside planters and containers for bringing greenery and color right up to the pool.
Illustrated with beautiful full-color photographs of outstanding poolscapes, this unique guide demonstrates how any pool owner can transform the pool area into the showpiece of the neighborhood.

I'm happy to see a book on this topic, especially one written by an accomplished writer and photographer. Many garden swimming pools stand out like a sore thumb - a harsh rectangle of Hollywood blue water with cold tile edges. They're lovely and cool in hot weather, but UGLY. Anything that helps to change or disguise this is all good.
The writer has many suggestions for doing just this. She addresses in depth topics such as decking, enclosures, structures, furniture and plantings. She has researched and offers suggestions for problems such as awkward rocky sites and the need to have an enclosure around the pool that doesn't block the view or make the place look like a prison.
It was good to see a generous number of pages given to plants and plantings - everything from container planting to landscaping the entire site. The writer also focuses on planning ahead when installing a pool or landscaping around it, and on matters relating to the budget. Both are very important and often overlooked..
The writer obviously has an encyclopedic knowledge of her topic and her writing is crisp and to-the-point. She understands the issues facing people who want to integrate their pool into their garden and addresses them directly. Her photographs illustrate her points with relevance and clarity. I'd recommend this book to anyone trying to add some style and class to a garden with a swimming pool.

Book Description
Bold, innovative, technological marvels, skyscrapers first became part of the nation's landscape of triumphalism during the Gilded Age. In the 20th century, they began to form distinctive skylines, reflections of the unique character of each metropolis. A distinctive piece of Americana, skylines have grown to embody the national character and tradition, a combination of ingenuity, courage, bravado, and the will to accomplish the seemingly impossible, and an expression of the freedom to reach the greatest heights of human experience that has shaped the United States. Skylines: American Cities Yesterday and Today showcases the skylines of 48 great American cities with the brilliant panoramic photographs of Blakeway Worldwide Panoramas. Historical views of these cities, both photographs and detailed maps, reflect the increased importance of civic pride over the past century. Historian M. Hill Goodspeed guides readers through each city, offering atmospheric historical portraits to accompany the vintage images and the stunning contemporary Blakeway images.Customer Reviews:

Minimum Wage: Book 2 : The Tales of Hoffman (Minimum Wage)
Bob Fingerman Manufacturer: Fantagraphics Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 1560972866 |
Amazon.com
Minimum Wage: Book Two is a thoroughly enjoyable twentysomething slice of life. Even though this is the second collection of Bob Fingerman's Minimum Wage stories, it reads well as a stand-alone volume: all of the characters are properly reintroduced and are distinctive enough to immediately engage new readers. The first two of the five chapters deal with protagonists Rob and Sylvia looking for an apartment together in New York City. Anyone who's had a hard time looking for a place to live or who hates to move will find plenty of humor in these pages. The fourth chapter, which centers on a comic-book convention (Rob is a cartoonist), is chock full of funny scenes and comics-industry cameos, which can be pretty darn funny if you're in on the jokes (if you're not up on comics convention humor, though, the chapter may not be as engaging). The volume ends slightly anticlimactically, leaving room for a third book, but don't let that deter you. Minimum Wage is great reading.

Hockey Gods: The Inside Story of the Red Wings' Hall-Of-Fame Team
Nicholas J. Cotsonika Manufacturer: Triumph Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1572434813 |
Book Description
Nine future Hall of Famers. The greatest coach of all time, who entered the Hall of Fame long ago. No NHL team has ever had a collection of characters as accomplished as the one the Detroit Red Wings had in 2001-02.But did it work? Did egos clash? Did they go all the way?
In the tradition of John Feinstein's best-selling A Season on the Brink, Nick Cotsonika will draw back the curtain on one of the most compelling stories in the history of sports. Never before has an NHL team brought together such a dazzling number of big names. Chris Chelios. Sergei Fedorov. Dominik Hasek. Brett Hull. Igor Larionov. Nicklas Lidstrom. Luc Robitaille. Brendan Shanahan. Steve Yzerman. And, of course, legendary coach Scotty Bowman.
With this unprecedented talent comes the potential of unprecedented problems: competition for playing time and limelight, the burden of expectations in a Stanley Cup-crazy place like Detroit, a city that calls itself ``Hockeytown.'' With access to the players and coaches, Cotsonika will be witness to it all, how the players deal with themselves, how they clash with the mercurial Bowman, how they handle being part of the richest payroll in the sport's history, thanks to deep-pocketed, aggressive owner Mike Ilitch. Cotsonika will provide, in sharply engaging fashion, many details of a season in the NHL usually hidden from view.
This stew of unprecedented personalities and pressure is bound to be irresistible to every hockey fan.

Fantastic narrative of a season to remember.......2002-09-24
In "Hockey Gods," Nicholas Cotsonika, the hockey writer for the Detroit Free Press, follows the team from their embarrassing and shocking first-round ouster in the 2001 playoffs (the team's earliest exit since 1994), through training camp, the regular season and the Olympics (in which the Wings had 10 players and one prospect representing five countries), culminating in the spectacular playoff run and Stanley Cup victory.
If you are a Red Wing fan, this book should be required reading; however, I think any hockey fan would enjoy reading this book. It gives an excellent inside look at perhaps the best assemblage of talent the NHL has seen on one team in quite some time. And with Curtis Joseph in net replacing the retired Dominik Hasek, Mr. Cotsonika may just have to write a sequel to "Hockey Gods" next year!

Shooting Stars: Photographs from the Portnoy Collection at the Hockey Hall of Fame
Andrew Podnieks Manufacturer: Firefly Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 155209314X |
Amazon.com
Perhaps it's as simple as the colorful uniforms dappling the stark white background, but no sport photographs more beautifully than hockey. Shooting Stars is a collection of the splendid images of the '70s eternally frozen by Lewis Portnoy, the photographer who, with his strobe lights and zoom lenses, revolutionized the capturing of hockey on film. More than just a master of action, Portnoy introduced marvelously detailed, close-up portraits of players in action. Each of the 75 full-page color pictures, all permanently enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, is accompanied by a full page of explanatory text, all of it historical, much of it anecdotal. Some of the more unforgettable prints to check: an ancient and exhausted Gordie Howe, a scarred and bump-faced Bobby Hull, Chuck Lefley tottering precariously on one skate, maskless dinosaur Gump Worsley in the net, iron man Garry Ungar bloodied and bruised, and goalie Jaques Plante taking a face full of flying ice. Portnoy's camera not only preserves the chill, it lets you feel it. --Jeff SilvermanBook Description
"A hidden treasure for the hockey world."
Craig Campbell, The Hockey Hall of Fame "The real excitement in Lewis Portnoy's life began one night 30 years ago, when he witnessed a savage brawl in a now shattered establishment just east of Dogtown (St. Louis)."
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The brawl that changed Lewis Portnoy's life was in a major league hockey game. He had brought a newly bought Nikon to the game, "and I jumped up and started shooting." He became, for 10 great years (1967-1976), the leading photographer of hockey in North America, pioneering new lighting and photography techniques, soon copied by other professionals.
Portnoy's 75 color photographs of National Hockey League players in action represent the birth of modern hockey, after the expansion from the original six-team league. New equipment, colorful goalie masks and uniforms, and a faster, international influence made the spectacle more crowd-pleasing. And! as the league grew, the audience got bigger.
This book is the first to chronicle the opening of that era in hockey, and Lewis Portnoy's photos perfectly complement the descriptive text by Andrew Podnieks. There are essays and player anecdotes about the development of the larger league and the great times that went along with it.
Andrew Podnieks is a hockey historian.

In 1945, the Hockey Hall of Fame began inducting the game's superstars into its pantheon of greats. Among that first group were legends One-Eyed Frank McGee, Georges Vezina, and Lord Stanley of Preston. Since then, every player who has made a tremendous contribution to the game has been so honoured, from Maurice Richard to Johnny Bower to Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. For nearly a third of a century, the Turofsky brothers of Toronto--Nat and Lou--found magic through the lenses of their cameras, particularly when those lenses were focused on hockey and the original six clubs that made up the NHL. Innovators and master craftsmen, their stark black-and-white photos are still haunting more than 60 years after they were taken. This magnificent collection of 73 pictures, culled from more than 21,000 Turofsky negatives archived at the Hockey Hall of Fame, is filled with drama, brutality, and grace--like the sport it's chronicling. In addition to a lively biographical introduction to the brothers, Portraits of the Game presents each photo with detailed information about the time, the players, and the game played. Historically and artistically, this book has the force and fascination of a well-executed power play.Book Description
