Book Description
Virtually no other form of American architecture is as widespread or as popular as the Spanish Revival style. From bungalows and mansions to gas stations and government buildings, its influence-and its fans-can be found everywhere. Yet there has never been a single comprehensive survey of this diverse category of design.
In Red Tile Style, Arrol Gellner describes the rich history and fertile permutations of Spanish Revival architecture. Packed with more than 250 lush color photographs taken by Douglas Keister, this handsome volume ranges from the style's origins in the Spanish colonial churches of the Southwest to its emergence as a commercial form in late-nineteenth-century railroad stations to the nationwide explosion in popularity sparked by the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego. Learned, lucid, and pleasing to the eye, Red Tile Style explores the far-reaching Spanish Revival influence in today's architecture in all its variations and adaptations. For the serious student and architecture fan alike, this book is truly a landmark.
Customer Reviews:
Charming book.......2007-08-31
Gellner's book captures all the charm of the 1920-1930 Spanish style homes in California. There are hundreds of pictures of this type of home--lots of mansions as well as small bungalows suitable for people of very modest means. Lots of ideas for anyone building a home or doing remodeling. I was especially struck by one "Marina District home ...(which) gives the illusion of depth and complexity despite its constricted urban site". Wish I could find an architect like that one.
FAB!!!.......2004-04-20
This book gives a GREAT history on these "spanish style homes"...as soon as the book arrived, i went thru it just studying the photos ans reading the subtitles - (i was imediately educated on the style). Then i went and started reading it from the beginning. WOAH!!!! It did a great job at explaining the history and the developement of what we just generally refer to "spanish style."
It is truley an informative book. Especially if you really like the mission/spanish look.
we are working on our new home, and it will be great to not only decorate it how we like, but also KNOW the background and reason to why we decorate it how we do.
Building a Spanish Colonial? This is the Bible........2003-12-25
In researching a Spanish Colonial retirement home for Florida, I've reviewed numerous similar books. As noted in the other reviews most books deal with the top-of-the-line mansions and hotels in this style. This book has a chapter just on examples of modest houses in this style. It has another chapter on small scale courtyard apartment projects. It has tons of the details you might want to employ to give your home the "authentic" feel. Of all the books I read, this is the one I BOUGHT!!
Buy this Book!.......2003-04-05
There are books out there that cover the spanish revival style, but, most tend to focus on the larger than life homes of people who can afford magnificent, large estates. Finally, a book that not only showcases the large estates out there, but, more importantly for me, the "smaller" more realistically sized homes that I could see myself living in. If you love this style of architecture as I do, buy this book, you will not be disappointed!
Great Book For Reference Or Just For Pleasure.......2002-12-18
This book is well written and profusely illustrated showing overall views of varied Spanish Colonial Revival structures, residential, commercial and public. It also contains many detail shots of lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures and other unique parts that make up the whole of this style. The book is valuable to the architect, restorationist, home owner and anyone interested in architecture in general.

Appalachian Lives

Book Description
A world we have lost, in beautiful photographs and moving words.
Life in the steep hills of Appalachia has changed more in the last twenty years than in the previous two hundred. Long a region of farmers, burley tobacco, cattle, copious gardens, durable traditions, and hard-working families, it has become a region of retirees, developers, young urban escapees, and new highways. Aware of the transformation, Tim Barnwell set out to document the lives of the people in the land he grew up in. His sensitive portraits, landscapes, and farm scenes, and his penetrating oral histories give us an entrée into a life characterized by straightforward joys, hardships, isolation, and independence. It is a way of life we will not see again. 100 duotone photographs.
Customer Reviews:
The Old Days Are Still Here.......2005-09-18
Tim Barnwell has done an excellent job of choosing pictures for this book. It's in black and white and is well done. The past comes back quickly in our minds. It's hard to believe that people still live like this in our day and time much less that they choose to live this way.
Appalachia hasn't changed much over the years when it comes to the rural areas. These people look like they could have lived a hundred years ago instead of the 1980's! Gardening, quilting, plowing and haymaking are still going on today but it seems much easier in the modern world then these pictures show.
The people remind me of my grandparents. They make me want to go visit them. I'm glad there are people who want to remember and pass on the old ways.
Any one interested in farming and rural things will enjoy seeing this book. The conversations are very real and believeable even in today's world.
Barnwell's Magnificent Portraits.......2004-12-11
The quiet pictures in Tim Barnwell's The Face of Appalachia are full of small revelations. Ernest Rector, a fiercely intense elderly man, glares at the camera. One arm supports a large portrait of Jesus. The other cradles a framed magazine cover showing Johnny Cash with his wife, June Carter. You'd think he was encircling his family.
"When Bill Taylor was sick," Rector recalls, "a bunch of us went over to his place and shucked and put up seven hundred bushels of corn so his hogs would have something to eat over the winter. We didn't get a penny for it, and didn't expect it either. ...Today, if you were dying of thirst, you couldn't get a man to give you a drink of water for less than a dollar."
That story has nothing-and everything-to do with that picture. It's one of 85 brief oral histories Bramwell has appended to the more than 100 duotone portraits and landscapes here. This captivating book makes you wish more photographers wrote down what the people they picture have to say.
Barnwell's studious, scrupulous achievement is worth a long look.
Terrific, truthful portrayal of Appalachia.......2003-11-30
Wow! What can I say. This is one beautiful book. I'm 70 and grew up living this lifestyle. I still have a farm here in Kentucky. Finally there is someone who "gets it" and shows Appalachia as it really is. Mr. Barnwell understands the people and connects with them. Through touching photographs and captivating conversations he portrays the heart and soul of the region and it's people. You know, this is how people across this great country used to live, it's just that it hung on here longer due to the isolation. So if you want to see how you father, mother, grandparents, and great grandparents lived, take a look at this book. It is one of a kind from what I've seen. I can identify with every scene, but I think folks everywhere can too, even if they weren't raised here. I think great pictures can transcend culture and be meaningful to anyone with an appreciation of life. It's one of the prettiest done books I've seen as well-great print quality and design. Folks will look back on this a hundred years from now and realize what a masterpiece of work Mr. Barnwell has created, capturing this life the way he did. I highly recommend it!
Face of Appalachia-One Terrific Photo Book.......2003-11-18
This new book is a one-of-a kind masterpiece of photographic work. There are a hundred or so photographs and they show a true view of life in the Appalachian region. They are timeless and haunting. There is a wonderful section in the back called "Oral Histories" where each person photographed tells a story about their life-which is captivating in itself. That, combined with the top-notch photographs, makes this a unique treat-beautiful images and intriguing stories from real lives. It will appeal to photographers and non-photographers alike. The images look like they could have been taken in the 1940's, but are from the last 25 years or so. Mr. Barnwell obviously spent much time getting to know these people, even being invited into their homes to record private moments in their lives. They are not the stereotypical views most photographers from outside the area do, or the exploitive poor-white-trash portrayed by other photographers like Shelby Lee Adams. But they are not simply a romantic view of days gone by, either. Rather they capture the true heart and soul of these amazing people-showing the beauty and the flaws in unflinching detail. The images are not only stunning but extremely well reproduced. The book is well organized, beautifully designed, and has wonderful production qualities. It's also a bargain compared to prices of similar quality photo books I've bought.

Men In Hats on Paper!.......2004-11-12
I'm a big fan of Men In Hats, so of course I was excited when the book came out. With the high resolution strips printed in full color, it looks sharp. Also, there is a bonus long-form story in the back of the book, so it's more than just the strips you've seen online.
I highly recommend this book.
Great comic, but why buy it?.......2004-10-09
I don't really understand why someone would want to buy a collection of web comics that they can get for free by going to the web comic's site. Perhaps to support the creator, or if it was reccomened to them and they don't have an internet connection. So, given that, I can't justify five stars.
The comics themselves, however, are hillarious... at least for those with a more cynical or just plain off-beat tastes. If you're reading this review, then you can go to the site (meninhats.com) and see if this is the comic for you.
Technically I haven't read the book, but..........2004-07-11
I am a real fan of the webcomic. This comic relies on dialouge and interesting characters instead of flashy art. It may not be for everyone but I LOVE it. The humor is sorta like a fusion between The Farside and Calvin & Hobbes. I highly recomend that you buy this.
By the by the comic is located here: http://meninhats.com/ if you want to try before you buy. ;)

Valley of Silence.......2007-04-27
It took longer than usual for this series to grab me, but it is well worth the effort! This is a wonderfully enthralling trip to an alternate universe with great visual imagery, engaging characters, smart dialogue which demonstrate, yet again Ms Roberts great talent. Do not be put off by a change in the fabric & weave of her work! Definately worth your time.
disgusting, bloodthirsty series--"0" stars.......2007-04-15
I have been a Robert's fan for 2 decades--own just about everything she has ever written--and this trilogy is the most disgusting, bloodthirsty, violent, grotesque piece of trash I have ever read. She just can't have written these. If the rating allowed "O" stars that would be my rating. Unfortunately, since so many millions of us buy on faith, the trilogy will most undeservedly end up a best-seller unit. I read #1 and threw it out, something I have never ever done with a Robert's book. Got 1/3 of the way threw #2 and into the garbage along with the untouched #3.
Not Her Best.........2007-03-16
I usually love Nora Roberts Trilogys but this one left me cold. I could not get into it at all. I loved her witches trilogy and her others but this one...sorry, Nora - I will await your next one and hope for the best.

Vest focuses and explores three of the foundations of the Benedictine way (silence, the exploration of Scripture, and the hours of prayer) leading the reader toward their own spiritual growth.
Customer Reviews:
Solid Introduction, But Not For the More Experienced.......2001-06-29
This book, had I been a novice in the spiritual "arts," would have received five stars from me. It deals with the three spiritual acts of silence, holy reading, and prayer, from the perspective of Benedictine spirituality. As such, it is a solid introduction to all those. However, if you have some experience with any of these discipines, and with Benedictine spirituality, and are looking to go deeper, you ought to consider another book. Vest does, though, offer a good bibliography at the end to guide the reader to more material. Overall a good book, but not one I will return to.
Spirtuality in the Ordinary.......2001-05-19
This book is divided into three primary sections/disciplines: Silence, Prayer and Holy Reading. I knew that the book would challenge me immediately in the chapter on silence....it was so good I kept thinking that I wanted to talk about it to my friends. I realized in that chapter how little inward and outward silence I really have. The suggestions were practical and on target.
The Benedictine approach is something rarely discussed in my circle of fellow Christians and in the church that I attend. Some of the language used was awkward and foreign to me at first. The message, however is wonderful. We can all find greater spirituality in the ordinary things that we do. We can all find greater peace and love in Christ every day. Because some of the ideas were somewhat new to me, I had a slight feeling of "aloneness" when I started reading the book. Then at the end, it was all brought together in one of the most powerful thoughts: "Living the Gospel is about being in Love. It is knowing that we are never alone"
This book will most likely be one of the few I keep close by and reference frequently. It is a book that draws the reader back to the wisdom it offers.
It Answers Your Questions.......2000-05-20
No Moment Too Small by Noreen Vest is a concise, very readable, exploration of three of the building blocks in Benedictine Sprituality. Her discussion of "Lectio Divina," Holy Reading, makes the journey into this discipline easy to approach. Especially helpful is her explanation of the various ways of interpreting the Scripture for devotional use. Ms. Vest opens the door to a rewarding prayer life with a rich discussion on prayer as dwelling in the presence of God. I would recommend this book all those wanting to understand more completely the beauty of solitude, prayer and holy reading in the Benedictine life.

Customer Reviews:
fantastic book!.......2005-12-21
As the leading civilian expert on the Secret Service, I highly recommend this book. Larry Sneed is to be commended for getting so many primary witneses on the record (in detail, as well).
Vince Palamara
History Channel, author of two books, in over 32 other author's books, etc.
The Official Story.......2005-03-13
Mr Sneed got many people to talk in there own words about the case. Unfortunately, as soon as I read the names I knew what they were going to say. The Dallas police force was the best, they were so clean it was scary! Every officer said the same thing-no conspiracy-both Oswald and Ruby acted alone! Only one admitted that Ruby did not go down the Main St. ramp-Officer Vaughn was telling the truth-and Gus Rose saying that the photo of the chevy in Gen. Walker's driveway had a whole obliterating the licence plate is a blatent lie. Nevertheless, I'm glad I read it because now I know what the researchers were up against trying to solve the case.
DRY AND PACIFYING..........2004-08-13
To conspiracy buffs and lone nut believers alike...this has got to be one of the most non commital and non emotional book about that day in Dallas ever written. Note to conspiracy buffs...almost all the stories sound TOO similar...like they have had ALOT of time to concur...to the lone nut Oswald did it folks..it will stike you odd about the dispassionate way all of the people tell their stories, I mean I realize the bulk majority were police and FBI, but it is just so dry, even if Oswald could be proven to be the lone nut, surely it shouldn't make the assassination less emotional. Literally it goes" well I went down the steps and looked at the top of my shoe..blah!Blah!" It is an okay book to have if you have a good collection already, and just want it to put with the rest.
Sneed is the Man.......2003-02-07
Being a friend Mr.Larry A. Sneed(AKA the voice of the Panthers) he realy knows what he is talking about. But what I realy think Mr.Sneed should do is become a stand up comedian or the announcer for the dawgs. But back to his book. His book provides many different views on the assasssination from many different sources. I especialy love his thinking on the 2 bullet theory. But back to Mr.Larry A. Sneed(AKA the voice of the Panthers) as person. He gives his all to teaching. The man is a historical genious and comedic genious also. His presence in the classroom surpasses any other teachers. When he walks in the room he brings something no other teacher does (and im not talking about the hair dew or the color changing glasses. So buy his book he needs the money so he can go on more trips to historical sites and buy random things of ebay.
A "must" for Kennedy assassination conspiracy buffs.......2002-05-06
No More Silence: An Oral History Of The Assassination Of President Kennedy by Larry A. Sneed is a solid primary reference of a shattering event that changed America forever. The personal testimonies of eyewitnesses, policemen, and people involved in the transfer of Oswald fill this solid reference book that adds the weight of human emotion and perspective to shelves of historical analysis. A "must" for Kennedy assassination conspiracy buffs, No More Silence is a unique, uncensored, and very highly recommended reading.

Entertaining and Informative (Weird Intro, Though).......2005-08-10
I thought the story "Silence" was very good, surprisingly interesting and engaging given its age. Its plot was not unlike many modern tales, which I found interesting also.
If I have one complaint, it is that the translator used some seemingly too modern vocabulary in her translation, like "hit the road," though I suppose there could be something quite similar in old French usage.
The most amusing part is the introduction, that among other things, mentioned that the story shows a hatred for women. They describe insults from the story against women. As a woman, I thought "Yeah, seems about right for a book written in that time." But lo and behold, turns out, the writer threw only as many insults towards evil women as he lavished great praises upon the women of good virtue. And he even said as much at the end, almost as if he were speaking in reply to the introduction. Didn't do him much good, though, they didn't listen. ;)
About the story, it was much better than I expected, with lots of excitement (never a dull moment) and strong characters. My main disappointment was the end, but I'll leave that to be discovered.
Cheers!
Deceit, desire, and disguise!.......2003-06-01
While another review has stated a similarity between this work and Homer's Odyssey, I would like to state that I did not see any connection between the two stories.
On the other hand, this is a wonderful story containing dragons, true love, anthropomorphic personifications of abstract concepts such as Nature and Nurture, wars, romance, thought provoking commentary, and humor. The poet inserts his own comments on life, society, and the behavior of the characters throughout the work to such an extant that he is as much a character as anyone else. Furthermore, this thirteenth century romance contains a French female warrior who predates Joan of Arc by approximately a century. It is amazing to think that this work was nearly lost to time by being hidden in a box labeled "old papers - no value."
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only complaints were concerning the translation rather than the text itself. There were a number of spelling errors in the English text. Some references to notes on the translation were mismarked or missing. Also, as someone who can translate a bit of Old French, I found that while the majority of the translation was fine, there were occasional places where I wondered how she arrived at the word that she chose. Also, while the line by line translation in a facing page format made it easy to switch back and forth between English and Old French, I found many of her English phrasings to be awkward in that while they would look fine as a sentence, they did not scan well in a poetry format.
Still, those were minor quibbles over all. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys medieval literature like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight or Chretien de Troyes' romances.
A remarkable story of feminsm, heroism, symbolism; a classic.......1997-11-20
I had the luck to read this book in a literature class, and it has become a very personal love of mine. The story is beautiful and the characters are so full of symbolism; it is a feminine version of Homer's "The Odyssey", but with a feminist theme. The history behind the book is to intriguing that anyone interested in Classical Literature Studies, French Literature, Feminist Literature, or a good story, would quickly fall in love with its beauty as I have. I am currently attempting to contact publishers in hope that someone may realize its importance as a mythological masterpiece, and hope this review may spark some interest. If De Beauvior were born 500 years earlier this would be her "Second Sex". I believe in the story and its universal importance. (I give it a 9 because it was originally written as an Old French poem, which may be why it is so inaccessible--very few people can read Old French--but the story itself is priceless)

Back cover blurb (not a review).......2007-05-20
'Til death do us part...
Nicky Fairchild had backpacked her way to Venice hoping to find sunshine and warmth. Instead, she'd nearly died of pneumonia, then been swept off her feet by Dr. Carlo Santini, the sensuously brooding widower who'd saved her life.
She'd fallen immediately in love with him. There could be no other explanation for agreeing to marry a man she barely knew. And all too soon she became Signora Nicolina Santini, with a fashionable new hairstyle, a flashy new wardrobe and a husband who made her feel uneasy, almost fearul at times -- a husband whose friends looked shocked when they met her. Was this destined to be a marriage made in heaven -- or hell?
