Rendering in Pen and Ink- A pro review.......2007-05-18
This book is essential. I am a pro illustrator and I still find myself cracking it open. Through out your career in art you will have a hand full of books that amaze you and keep teaching you. This is it.

This book is all that the other reviewers say it is. The text is clear and informative, if dated... but the illustrations! The illustrations are worth the price of the book. Even just the basic exercise illustrations in the first part of the book are beautiful, and demonstrate what is possible with this medium.
I have to admit, I'm a Rapidograph person (and if you are too, please see The Technical Pen in addition to this book) rather than a flexible nib person, but the lessons and examples in Guptill's book are priceless anyway.

A good reference book.......2007-02-18
The information provided in this book is very comprehensive. There is a lot of sections on pen rendering used in the past and the types of materials used. But today, in the 21st century, most artists prefer the technical pen to that of the quill. All the drawings presented in the book are in black and white. I wish there are some in colour inks and combination with water-colours. I also wish it includes drawings of present day pen artists with their masterpieces. All in all, it is a good reference book.
Spectacular examples of pen technique........2007-02-07
A wonderful discussion of pen and ink rendering. This has become somewhat of a lost art, but it is very challenging and this book provides guidance about techniques and materials, and contains superb examples of finished work. Highly recommended!

I had seen this book at a friend's home in it's original form. I read some of it then, and had been searching for the original for some time. But, having now obtained this anniversary edition and read it from cover to cover I find this to be every bit as good as I had anticipated it to be.
The book starts with a basic material list and is a bit outdated in its suggestions for pens and inks, as these have moved on in the past sixty years. But the techniques remain the same and the author takes you from very basic skills and suggestions through many different techniques finishing with quite sophisticated ideas and designs.
I would recommend theis book for both the beginner and the serious and practised artist.

Todd Murrison, The Teacher.......2001-08-15
Todd Murrison demonstrates a wonderful range of techniques for beginners and tackles basic layout for intermediate. As an accomplished graphic artist, Todd explores more graphic applications, than freedom of expression, which this medium can not be separated from. We're waiting for Todd to break the mold in his second book to see all that wonderful talent flurish. Although I do recommend this book as a good one for beginners!

Todd captures the essence of an image with active strokes of confidence. His masculine perspective is unique. A body builder and artist is that unique combination. Personally I have found his talents are many and god given.
Reflected in these renderings in marker we see a glimps into this artists perception of art as media. Todd Murrison shows clear steps in utilizing this media. A must for any would be artist, and Todd Murrison fan!

I am not sure yet and want to give the book a more
serious look. Perhaps my mistake was to buy this
book at the same time i acquired Composite Drawing by
Uddin and Color Drawing by Doyle. The drawings and format
of these books instantly became well worn reference texts
for myself and students. I chose the Kasprisin book because
it presented a medium missing from the other books: watercolor techniques. I will give the prose a serious trial and i hope the book eventually proves to be a good resource too.
However, what bothers me is the book is sitting on my shelf and i am struck by the following realization: when it comes to a technique book, if i am not personally inspired by the sample drawings or paintings i am probably not going to be motivated to try to emulate the techniques. Please acknowledge this may be too shallow of a reaction and you may well find the book meets your needs.

What is Zen Calligraphy?
Calligraphy (sho) is a formative art based on writing. It includes not only writing that is beautiful, but phrases that are novel and interesting. According to the Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitaro (1870-1945; see figure 1), true creativity is not the product of a conscious effort but rather the
"phenomenon of life itself." True creation must arise from mu-shin, or the state of "no-mind," a state beyond thought, emotions, and expectations. Work that is produced through conscious effort is ultimately devoid of life.
Zen calligraphy in particular must spring from shonen sozoku, a Buddhist term equivalent to "true thought." Shonen is a state of full concentration that is devoid of thoughts and ideas, while sozoku here means "free-flowing continuity." Greatness in brushwork cannot be achieved through conscious
effort; it is only achieved through the states of mu-shin and shonen sozuku, or "no-mind" and a continuous state free of the thoughts and ideas that distract the mind.
Zen calligraphy differs from other calligraphic disciplines as it is focused on the realization of "no-mind." Furthermore, in contrast tosho, which uses Chinese characters as a basis, it is the expression of Zen through a brush, whether the result is a single stroke, a Zen circle, or an ink
painting. While sho is restricted to brushed writing, Zen calligraphy extends to other forms of brushwork.
Nearly all calligraphy today is born of conscious attention to an aesthetic concept, but we rarely find lines that are truly alive. In contrast, the calligraphy of Zen masters such as Daito Kokushi (1282-1337; founder of Daitokuji temple in Kyoto) or Ikkyu Sojun (1394-1481) resonates with the energy
of "no-mind" achieved through complete concentration. In these works, the lines are filled with vitality and the shapes are fresh and original.
Sen no Rikyu (1522-91), who established many of the basic precepts of the tea ceremony, held that nothing surpassed Zen calligraphy as a subject for display in the alcove of the tea room. He undoubtedly felt that only art works that reflect the eternal vitality of Zen writings could encourage the
mind toward enlightenment.
Rikyu recognized that calligraphy necessarily demands the highest level of spirituality. A line that manifests clarity cannot be drawn if the heart is clouded by worldly concerns; a stroke cannot be brushed with resolution if the heart is agitated; and calligraphy that reveals depth cannot be
produced if cultivation and experience are shallow.
To write kanji characters that resonate and demonstrate their deeper meaning, one's own mind must achieve unity with the meaning of the words-a requirement that calls for a higher level of spirituality. The calligrapher, therefore, must strive for the state of "no-mind" through meditation and
contemplation.

Ably translated into English by Thomas F. Judge and John Stevens, Zen Brushwork: Focusing The Mind With Calligraphy And Painting by Tanchu Terayama (Nishogakusha University) uses black-and-white photography to illustrate simple exercises and practices that one can follow to expand one's mind and meditation skills through the arts of calligraphy and painting -- especially as they have been practiced in Asian nations for thousands of years. Showcasing works of art as well as advice and practical instructions, Zen Brushwork is a thoughtfully written and an easy-to-follow guide that especially recommended to students of meditation, Zen Buddhism, and the contemplative aspects of the martial arts.

This beautifully illustrated book is of the "coffeetable" variety but that moniker fails to do justice for this incredible look into the life of the brillant novelist. Scores of rare photos and documents illustrate the best text I have ever read on the private life of Ms. Wharton. This is definately not the "ice queen" of other biographers; reproduced postcards and quoted letters give graphic proof of her warm and witty personality . She was clearly blessed with a remarkable capacity for friendship and unending thirst for knowledge and experiences. This is truly the finest biography ever written on the legendary lady of letters. I cannot tell you what a pleasure it is to own this volume, it proudly sits on my shelf alongside Ms. Wharton's own works. An absolute must for any reference library on Wharton!!!

A Beautiful Mind traces the meteoric rise of John Forbes Nash, Jr., from his lonely childhood in West Virginia to his student years at Princeton, where he encountered Albert Einstein, John von Neumann, and a host of other mathematical luminaries. At twenty-one, the handsome, ambitious, eccentric graduate student invented what would become the most influential theory of rational human behavior in modern social science. Nash's contribution to game theory would ultimately revolutionize the field of economics.
As a young professor at MIT, still in his twenties, Nash dazzled the mathematical world by solving a series of deep problems deemed "impossible" by other mathematicians. As unconventional in his private life as in his mathematics, Nash fathered a child with a woman he did not marry. At the height of the McCarthy era, he was expelled as a security risk from the supersecret RAND Corporation -- the Cold War think tank where he was a consultant.
At thirty, Nash was poised to take his dreamed-of place in the pantheon of history's greatest mathematicians. Nasar details Nash's harrowing descent into insanity -- his bizarre delusions that he was the Prince of Peace; his resignation from MIT, flight to Europe, and attempt to renounce his American citizenship; his repeated hospitalizations, from the storied McLean, where he came to know the poet Robert Lowell, to the crowded wards of a state hospital; his "enforced interludes of rationality" during which he was able to return briefly to mathematical research. Nash and his wife were divorced in 1963, but Alicia Nash continued to care for him and for their mathematically gifted son, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager. Saved from homelessness by his loyal ex-wife and protected by a handful of mathematical friends, Nash lived quietly in Princeton for many years, a dreamy, ghostlike figure who scrawled numerological messages on blackboards, all but forgotten by the outside world.
His early achievements, however, fired the imagination of a new generation of scholars. ~A Beautiful Mind: The Life of Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash~ is Sylvia Nassar's most remarkable biography of the life of mathematician John Forbes Nash, Jr. This is not the most flattering of biographies, but a remarkably intriguing one nonetheless. Nicknamed the Kid Professor, Nash started teaching first at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at age twenty-three. Nash gained acclaim following after he became a Nobel Laureate in 1994 for his contributions to economics, game theory, and mathematics. But earning this prestigious accolade was marked by a career of alienation and hardship.
He devised the so called Nash equilibrium, and contributed a breathtaking corpus of research to the study of game theory. Game theory concerns itself with the study of strategic interactions between agents. Parties choose strategies which will maximize their return in response to the strategies that other parties choose. Nash transcended the earlier zero-sum game theories, and revolutionized the application of game theory to both economic, political and military strategic questions. Traditionally, game theory applications were primarily were zero-sum in nature, with the winner-take-all approach-- i.e., my win is your loss, or vice versa.
True genius is often thought to meet the edge of insanity by some people. This held true in the life of John Nash. Lamentably, Nash suffered from schizophrenia, and made harrowing descent into mental illness complete with psychotic delusions and bizarre visions. His illness fueled his bizarre obsessions with numerology and other eccentricities.
Nash resigned his post at MIT after his first serious episodes. He took a position with the enigmatic Cold War think tank the RAND Corporation. RAND, the ultra secretive civilian think tank had a casual campus environment in the laid-back Santa Monica, CA of the 1950s, which hosted some of the most brilliant minds in the United States. RAND was enveloped in a melange of detachment, paranoia, and megalomania. His tenure there perhaps fueled his later Cold War paranoia, which came to bloom when his mental illness reached its full blown stage.
After some breakdowns, Nash recouped his bearings and went onto teach at Princeton. There he met his future wife Alicia who was one of his students. She became enamored with his genius. And contrary to popular myth, though schizophrenics are often thought to be devoid of personal attachments, Nash could show empathy and love. Though his illness frequently revisited him, his wife helped him cope with it. Nash scrawled numbers all over Princeton Hall, and became a mysterious ghost-like figure on the campus of Princeton University. His illness ultimately strained their marriage to the point of separation for a while. At one time, he coped with his illness by traveling Europe and became enamored of his delusions of self-importance. When his mental illness became full-blown, it incapacitated him and left him feeling utterly worthless. His wife had him committed to an institution briefly, before reconciling and moving back in with him to care for him. Instead of being relegated to obscurity, Nash eventually overcame his mental illness with age, and with the recommendation of his peers began to earn the recognition he long deserved.
All things considered, this is a most remarkable look at the life of John Nash. Perhaps the eccentric Nash would not have been very well regarded but for his genius. But Nash showed himself capable of compassion, empathy and love in the relationship with his wife Alicia. Nash possessed as his wife Alicia saw--a beautiful mind. Nash's life was dramatized in the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind based on Nassar's book, which renewed interest in the book first published in 1998.

I read this book long after it was published, and long after it had accumulated more reviews than anyone is likely to wade through. It's tough to think of a fresh approach, but here's a try:
An amusing, minor sub-theme in this book is the fact that John Nash, who ranks at or near the top among American mathematicians of the past century, was a flop at picking stocks. He devoted a tremendous amount of time to looking for patterns and other indicators that might help him beat the market, and he wound up doing worse than your average patzer. He even lost a sizable chunk of his mother's investment funds.
Think about that the next time you are tempted to respond to one of those blaring magazine or TV ads offering to sell you a technical stock-picking system that really works.

A Beautiful Book.......2007-06-15
In Nasar's biography of the Nobel prize winning mathematician John Forbes Nash, Jr., his descent into irrationality is portrayed by chronicling several experiences in his frenetic childhood and those from his early adulthood to the present.
In the first chapters of the book, Nasar juxtaposes several episodes in Nash's distinguished childhood, displaying his early genius in chemistry and math in conjunction with those that reveal a childishness equally as impressive. As a youngster, Nasar shows his penchant for pulling pranks on his friends, at one time electrocuting a neighbor and even his own sister, who was continually forced by her mother as they grew up to include the younger Nash in her social activities. However, Nash, though not taciturn, preferred reading encyclopedias and most of all, experimenting. His experiments with bomb-making actually killed one of his childhood friends, after which Nash stopped making them for the rest of his life.
The book describes Nash's early discovery of his love for math one day while reading a book about Fermat's Theorem on prime numbers, which he proved by his own self at the age of 12. It also details his spurning Harvard for Princeton University, a less recognized mathematics school then despite Albert Einstein's prominent position in the faculty, upon his graduation from Carnegie Mellon University, then known as the Carnegie Institute of Technology, because he felt they had not tried hard enough to pursue him.
Indeed, his egocentrism is depicted throughout the whole biography, and it is this megalomania which would later develop into full-blown schizophrenia and terrorize his whole constitution for decades, halting his academic production almost completely during that time period.
Nash ascribes his sudden affliction to a number of disappointments: first, though Nash had solved a problem on turbulence in which he was able to devise a mathematical model for notating its sudden changes in motion, he found out when he was about to submit his paper for publication that someone else, an Italian by the name of De Giorgi, had beat him to it and published his paper in the most obscure journal imaginable; secondly, he says in a letter that his attempt to revise quantum theory was "possibly overreaching and psychologically destabilizing."; third, he attributes his failure to win the Fields Medal in 1958--his last chance since it is generally awarded to young mathematicians--as a contributing factor to his disease. The rest of the book focuses on his delusional experiences and the assistance and loving care of his small group of friends, including his wife, which helped him finally regain control of his mind in 1990.
It was at Princeton that Nash became familiar with John von Neumann's famous theory on rational human behavior, The Theory of Games and Economic Behavior, which focused on zero-sum two person games, and which he felt was unrealistic for predicting most economic situations. Concentrating on what to him were gaping flaws in von Neumann's work, he set out to write his epochal dissertation on a theory that could encompass all realistic scenarios, called Non-cooperative Games, which contained the definition of his equilibrium theory, whose name he is now its eponym. His results also inspired the most famous game of strategy in all of social science: The Prisoner's Dilemma. More significantly, it was this work which won him his Nobel prize in Economics in 1994.
Nasar states that his hyper-competitive spirit was fueled by an intense drive to succeed. When he did not receive an assistant professorship offer from Princeton after obtaining his Ph.D at only 22 years of age, despite his seminal paper on algebraic manifolds, he was humiliated deeply and thereafter went to MIT where he was offered a fellowship. At 25, Nasar describes Nash's sudden impulse to solve the embedding problem for manifolds--a problem which had been left unsolved since it was suggested by Riemann--as a way to belittle a colleague at MIT. And he did. This is today one of the most famous works in pure mathematics.
The body of research which Nasar obviously has pored over is impressive, and it shows in the fluidity of his biography, which flows like a novel, and the immense number of sources cited. It is a fascinating book and one which I recommend as an insight into the emergence of a supposedly degenerative disease and its subsequent effects on a man who at the time seemed on the verge of unprecedented success and fame in the scholastic world. It also shows how even the most logical can at times seem most illogical, and vice versa. As Nash says, "the ideas I had about supernatural beings came to me the same way my mathematical ideas did." For me, I was less intrigued by the episodes detailing Nash's battles with schizophrenia than I was with those of his academic achievements. His spirit and motivation is something I wish I possessed much more of.
All in all, this is a book I enjoyed immensely. And for $2 at Deseret Industries, I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my money!

Authors Elwood F. Holton III and Sharon S. Naquin, both academics, invested substantial research to produce a little book that might just solve the very big midlife quandaries faced by workers whose jobs have been downsized or exported to another country. People who thought they would never need to take a different job find themselves the new person in a new office again, with no tools to help them cope other than the lessons of the corporate culture they left behind. However, using old cultural information in a new place is the road to disaster, according to the learned authors, who do a fine job of explaining why. Businesses are culture clubs and new hires must learn to get along before they can get ahead. At fewer than 100 pages, this is, nevertheless, a little redundant. Perhaps we need to hear the bell ring clearly, over and over, for the content is useful stuff simply told. For that reason, We recommend this to anyone contemplating a move, to every new hire and to every HR officer as part of the pre-employment package given to all experienced applicants.
Good book overall but lacks first 90 day strategy.......2002-09-11
This is a good book oveall. It offers some valuable insight
regarding being succesful in your new job. However, this book never mentions the 90 day probationary period. I beleive this is becoming more and more important in our competitive work force. A lot of the material is common sense. Like avoiding
comparing jobs too much.
Still, it's a good book overall and I like the 12-step program.

Whenever you move from one assignment to another in your professional life, whether due to a promotion or a complete career change, the move carries with it a requirement to relearn some parts of your job and how you act at work. This book attempts to establish a template to help you through that process.
The book does a good job of laying out the basic requirements you need to address when entering a new job, laying out a one-year, twelve-step plan to ensure you are accepted by your co-workers and supervisors, all of which is designed to make sure you do a better job at your new position. The authors first define the problem, pointing out how newcomers are generally perceived in organizations, and pitfalls they tend to encounter while trying to gain acceptance. They then take you through their twelve-steps, which are prioritized to take you through your first year at work while increasing your credibility with your new co-workers. By working through their twelve steps, you present a better image to the outside, which helps get you accepted into the organization more quickly. And once that is done, you will be far more effective in executing your duties and helping your organization improve.
The book is pretty slim, and some additional discussion of each step would make it more valuable. As a baseline, however, this book provides a good way to approach any new position.

Hard to imagine a book doing a better job than this one does of walking someone through the world of pop music management. The authors have hit on a clever way to provide a wealth of detail, wisdom and rules, while keeping things entertaining: The narrative follows three days in the life of a manager of a band, using that story on which to hang the nuts and bolts. That way, you not only learn the tricks of the trade, but you get a sense of the life as well. This book would by no means be of interest only to someone who wants to get in strictly on the management side--I'm a (hopefully up-and-coming) musician, and almost everything in the book seemed potentially helpful to me, both in understanding what I can expect in a manager, and in learning approaches to self-management as well. This book is a tremendously valuable addition to my career-development library.
