Book Description

First published in 1966, and since translated into 16 languages, this remarkable book has become an essential document in architectural literature. As Venturi's ""gentle manifesto for a nonstraightforward architecture,"" Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture expresses in the most compelling and original terms the postmodern rebellion against the purism of modernism. Three hundred and fifty architectural photographs serve as historical comparisons and illuminate the author's ideas on creating and experiencing architecture. Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture was the winner of the Classic Book Award at the AIA's Seventh Annual International Architecture Book Awards.

4 out of 5 stars Venturi in its complexity.......2005-07-18

this book impacted the field of architecture during its time as much as LeCorbusier did with his book. Its extreme in its area of covering the world of architecture and how Venturi studies each theory on how the world of architecture has changed and is changing. Definately a must read for any architecture student or anyone associated in this long term field. the history of this book is more important than anything. Although alittle complex it is a must for those mentioned.

4 out of 5 stars Still Relevant..........2005-01-31

Now that the bottom of postmodernism has actually fallen out and is being dragged along the street by the chains of American capitalism, it's "alright" for students of architecture to return to that misjudged canonical textbook of post-modernism, C+C by Venturi. While not as engaging as his other main work "Learning from Las Vegas", this book still leads the reader into a meticulous analysis of the physical composition of major pieces of architecture, and the composition of the thoughts that made them. After reading it, I found myself unconciously applying it's main dichtomy of complexity and contradiction to much of the architecture around me, if that is any testament to its power.

5 out of 5 stars Gateway towards looking at architecture.......2004-06-24

I had to read this book for a class specifically regarding Robert Venturi and the postmodernism movement that he became a leading proponent of. However, this book is NOT a manifesto for a postmodern vacabulary- rather, this book looks at all architecture from the Parthenon to the common family home. Let me say that I have read many architectural theory books, but nothing that really inspired me to look at a building and really see what the architect intended like Complexity and Contradiction. This book really focused my attention on the possibilities for great architecture on any level- from museum to treehouse. I feel that anyone with an interest in appreciating architecture should certainly read this book. Because of my studies of Robert Venturi and his contemporaries, I have pursued a degree in architecture and certainly plan to incorperate his ideas and philosophies into my work.

3 out of 5 stars the duck and the decorated shed.......2000-03-24

venturi's book highlights the inherent complexity in today's post-modern society, coupled with the depth of comprehension often mistaken by critics. A must buy for Architecture students!

I'm new to digital photography, and a big question I had before buying my camera was "which one to buy". I'm pretty technical, but photography jargon was beyond me. I felt like I was making a decision in the dark. I lucked out by asking friends who did know about photography, but it made me uncomfortable. It's hard to find a single source who can explain everything succinctly.

I chanced across this book in a bargain bin at Fry's; what a deal. This book answered every question I've had about digital cameras , traditional 35mm, and it compares and contrasts them. It is well written, explains all of the camera settings and how to use them get better photographs.

While published in 2004, it remains current. I bought a camera released in the fall of 2006, and this book is still extremely helpful. It even has a chapter on buying the right camera, and the organization of the book is perfect to build your knowledge before you buy. I definitely recommend this book.

As a professional film photographer for years, now venturting into digital, this book is perfect. It offers basic information on the difference between film and digital, but is written at a level that speaks to professionals. It's full of good tips. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars See the chapter on camera phones.......2004-10-01

Just a year or two ago, photography passed a tipping point. Digital photography usage has increased amazingly, and traditional film is fading fast. Why? Well, this book offers some (actually many) reasons. It goes through what you should know about this new way.

Of necessity, there are sections of the book common to both methods. A chapter on the principles of taking good photos, that could have been written a century ago. Some ideas in photography are timeless.

But the bulk of the book deals with the unique aspects of digital photography. Like different file formats. At least it is easy to convert between these. Plus, with digital, you now have a tradeoff between higher resolution and being able to store fewer photos as a consequence.

A key chapter is devoted to camera phones. Ubiquitous cameras, that can easily transmit their messages wirelessly to anywhere in the world. Ultimately, this may be the most radical upheaval in the entire arena of photography. It means that in cities, from now on, there may often be someone watching and recording you. Even if this is not so, you should assume it. The changes in our expectations of privacy have only begun.

4 out of 5 stars A solid guide to digital printing.......2005-02-08

This clear and concise guide is a great resource for beginners and serious amateurs. Well-organized and well written, it covers all aspects of digital photo printing, from selecting equipment, supplies, and software to preserving and presenting photos. Windows and Macintosh users alike will find good information. Rather than focusing upon a single photo-editing program, the author gives general photo editing advice, with examples from a variety of software packages. Confusing issues like camera resolution versus screen resolution versus printer resolution are explained clearly. One shortcoming is that the explanations of how to set levels and apply sharpening to images are too brief and simplified. There are also a few too many illustrations showing equipment and supplies. The author has wisely provided ample cross-referencing between chapters, and has included a number of information-rich tables.

                Book Description

The Cambridge edition of The Lost Girl uses the manuscript which D. H. Lawrence wrote in Sicily in 1920 to recapture his direct relationship with the text, and in particular to recover the characteristically fluent punctuation which the novel’s original printers obscured or ignored. The edition prints all four of the passages which the publisher censored without Lawrence’s full knowledge and the hero’s name is correctly spelled for the first time in an English edition. The novel is set mainly in the Eastwood of Lawrence’s youth, the full annotation identifies a great many real-life characters and settings. John Worthen’s introduction gives an accurate account of The Lost Girl’s development, composition and publication, and the influence upon the book of Lawrence’s desire to write a commercially successful novel. The textual apparatus records all variant readings.

                5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Find.......2004-05-15

This book was given to me on the last day of High School in 1972 by a girl friend. I've kept this book ever since and it ranks up there with my all time favorite books even though I agree with one other reviewer that this is not the best example of Lawrence's work. However, with that said, this book also has a heart and tenderness that really meant something to me. I'm amazed no one has ever written a screenplay of this work since it's worth it. It was the only book Lawrence ever won a prize for, which says something about it. Take a chance and read it.

                3 out of 5 stars Patchy stuff.......2003-11-15

"The Lost Girl" is the story of Alvira Houghton, who lives in a small Midlands town with her father, a draper. Mr Houghton undertakes various schemes to get rich quickly, each one more unrealistic than the others. Meanwhile, Alvira fears that she will end up a spinster, yet finds herself unable to make a commitment to any of the men who pursue her, that is until the Italian Ciccio arrives.

This is one of Lawrence's less-renowned novels, and was completed some years after it had been started. Indeed, I thought that towards the end, Lawrence's style was more mature than in the earlier sections of the book, thus betraying the times it was written. Therefore I felt that it was a disjointed work - for example, in the middle section (in which Ciccio first appears, and Alvira's interest in him grows) the plot drifts, as if Lawrence could not work out any resolution.

Despite these problems, I thought that there were interesting themes in "The Lost Girl", such as Alvira's fear of taking any action to resolve her predicament, as if the very fact that she had choices tortured her. I suppose one could draw parallels to existentialist thought, the tyranny of choice. Alvira is consumed by the need to be active in her life choices, and distressed by the mores of the society in which she operates. Lawrence rails against this in the early parts of the novel, criticising women for being so passive, for expecting others (men) to meet their needs for them.

Ciccio, being foreign, is not constrained by English social values, and therefore can provide Alvira with one way out of her impasse. Yet it's up to each reader to decide whether or not she has made the right choice in the end. Or is she still paying a high price for her earlier indecision?

Not a great example of Lawrence's work - it's too patchy for that, but it has its points of interest.

                5 out of 5 stars Extroidinary Novel.......2003-02-08

This book was beautifully and passionately written. It is a love story unique and philosophical. Do we choose our own fates? Alvina will tell you.

                5 out of 5 stars Soul Searching.......1999-02-26

Just like SISTER CARRIE, THE LOST GIRL is about a young woman searching for her place in the world. Meaning, floucing from one man to another, flirting, playing, getting engaged then dashing away for fun. And just like JEANNIE GERHARDT, this old man gets herself in trouble.

But the most fascinating part of this book is it's glimps into her background. How she was brought up in a wealthy and rich household, only to try out different occupations against her father's wishes, then ends up as a lower classed female in life. Very tragic.

                5 out of 5 stars A Touching, Soul-Searching Novel.......1998-07-11

I recently got done reading this wonderful, yet forgotten novel of Lawrence's. Truly compelling in it's intricate details of a young woman trying to find herself. Literally. She goes on the 'universal' self journey and discovers that she was lost and finally finds her identity and sensuality in the man she loves. D.H. Lawrence has a wonderful way of not wrapping up the ending in a nice, neat little package. As always, Lawrence is the ultimate man of mystery, sensual needs and desires. A "must read" for those who love to read Lawrence and for those who never have!

In 1855, Susan Hathorn set sail with her new husband Jode, captain of a three-masted cargo ship. She recorded their trip from Philadelphia to Savannah, Georgia, and on to Cuba and London in a diary. En route, the beauties of a moon rising over Cuban mountains, shipboard duties, and the pleasures of socializing with other seafarers are interspersed with reports of sea squalls, bedbugs, and a too-lively crew. "Strange doings in the galley," she notes amusingly. "Stewardess drunk as a beast--thinks her husband so--had a regular fight." Her diary entries are knit together by Catherine Petroski's sometimes dry, but often enriching comments on sea life, shipping, and Hathorn's background.

                Book Description

Excerpts from Susan Hathorn's journal, combined with contextualizing commentary by Catherine Petroski, create a vivid picture of daily life and social mores in the age of sail.

5 out of 5 stars A Diary of the Year 1855.......1998-06-15

Susan Hathorn speaks for herself through her diary, but Ms. Petroski provides background and insightful comments that explain some of Susan's more obscure references. Newly married, Susan accompanied her husband on his ship to England and the West Indies. She kept this diary for the whole year of 1855 while she was on the ship and then when she was left behind in their hometown in Maine because she was expecting a baby. I found it absolutely fascinating although a lot of Susan's time was spent at mundane tasks. Susan sure had a thing for sewing! I recommend this book highly to anyone who is interested in the lives of women in the 19th century.
