Poised against the sky like fantastic giant birds, the bridges and buildings of Santiago Calatrava possess a breathtaking grace and rhythm. Some--including the Milwaukee Art Museum and the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain--are designed to expand and contract like living organisms. In Santiago Calatrava: The Complete Works, Alexander Tzonis portrays the Spanish architect as a unique blend of artist and engineer. Using analogy as a creative tool, Calatrava has filled notebooks with bold sketches of lunging and leaping human bodies that mutate into arcing roof forms and bridge suspensions. At the same time--as the author of a doctoral thesis about how to design frame structures that can open and close--he has invented new systems that combine efficiency and stability with the elegance of a brilliant mathematical solution. Tzonis, an architecture professor whose writing is a model of clarity, leads the general reader through the intricacies of Calatrava's solutions for folding frames and new kinds of curved surfaces. Vastly superior in its depth of analysis to Philip Jodidio's Santiago Calatrava, Tzonis's authoritative text is accompanied by hundreds of glorious large-scale images of the work by numerous photographers. The book opens with a photo anthology of Calatrava's greatest works and then follows the development of his vision from 1979 to his 2004 design for the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. At the beginning of his career, Calatrava designed a roof that looks like a flying machine from the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. Tzonis writes that the concept was "a personal manifesto of what architecture could be: innovative, optimistic, rational, and playful." Conceived a mere eight years later, the Alamillo Bridge in Seville became an instant landmark. A towering, dramatically back-angled pylon supports 13 pairs of cables as deftly as if they were strings on a harp, pushing notions of tension and stability to a thrilling new extreme. --Cathy Curtis

4 out of 5 stars Soaring Excellence.......2005-05-05

This is a very thorough book on an amazing architect. Calatrava is a highly original architect and most of his work is nothing short of breathtaking. The photography in this book really captures the magic of his sculptures. That is what his buildings really are; great works of art. This book covers his work in detail and the text is informative. I appreciated that a model of the station at the World Trade Center site is included, one really hopes it gets build just as designed. I highly recommend this book to anyone intersted in great architecture, this man is a singular talent.

For me this is a very good book of Calatrava's work, but there is a big problem. The quality is good, the photografs are good, the text is not too much but the works presented are only projects that where not built and there aren't recent projects. That's the only problem.

At twenty the "Fra Angelico of Satanism", as Roger Fry was to call Aubrey Beardsley, was an obscure clerk in a London insurance firm. Three years later he was the most notorious — and perhaps the most influential — artist in England.

Here, then, is the marvelous boy—he died at twenty-five—as human being and as complex and tragic genius, in the rich context of 150 examples of his graphic art.

When Ruth Snyder was electrocuted at Sing Sing Prison in 1928, New York Daily News photographer Tom Howard was there--with a miniature camera he'd hidden under the cuff of his pants. The resulting snapshot made the front page the next morning (under the headline "DEAD!") and provoked fierce controversy among those wondering if tabloid journalism had finally gone too far. But, as Luc Sante points out in his introduction to New York Noir, a selection of pictures from the Daily News archives, the tabloids "retailed exclamation points"--Snyder in the electric chair was merely an extreme example of imagery that was a regular staple of the paper's coverage.

Many of the photos in New York Noir are not for the squeamish: corpses in the street or slumped in their car seats appear regularly, as do battered and bloodied criminals and suspects. But the power of these stark images is unmistakable--they are, as the book's title indicates, the raw material for the gritty vision of urban life that film noir popularized. For some people, tabloid crime photos are synonymous with Arthur "Weegee" Fellig; only one of his pictures graces these pages, however, and the other photographers represented here (many identified only by last name or no name at all) demonstrate that his reputation relies as much on promotional hustle as on artistic merit. Whenever possible, archivist William Hannigan supplies background information on the people and incidents in the pictures--but it is the images themselves, rather than the stories, that will stick in the reader's mind. --Ron Hogan

            Book Description

During the golden age of tabloid photography--from the 1920s to the 1950s--photojournalists created some of the most innovate and enduring images in the history of photography. Photos of crimes and criminals, more than any other subject, captured the public imagination. Here for the first time is a selection of the most outstanding crime photographs from the archive of America's premier tabloid newspaper, the New York Daily News

Author William Hannigan demonstrates how these groundbreaking photos helped create the visual style that we now associate with film noir classics from Double Indemnity to Chinatown and L.A. Confidential. Narrating the history of tabloid photography, Hannigan tells how hard-hitting pictures helped the Daily News win the tabloid wars on the 1920s, earning it the title of "New York's Picture Newspaper." An introduction by Luc Sante, author of Low Life and Evidence, examines the impact of these pictures on their original audience and how differently we see them today.

Capturing the mystery and drama of real-life "news noir," the photographs in this volume are both visually sophisticated and relentlessly revealing of human nature's dark side. An eloquent portrait of a city and an epoch, this book is not to be missed by crime buffs, photography lovers, or students of New York City's past.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty photos but not so interesting........2007-09-01

I got this for my sister-in-law and was afraid it might be too graphic for her (she's a bit squeamish about blood). It's not nearly as explicit as I feared. Unfortunately, it's not as interesting as I'd hoped, either. Lots of pictures of rather anonymous people in very sharp clothing. I think she'll like it, but if you're already fairly used to postmortem or morgue photos, you won't be very impressed.

5 out of 5 stars "Black and White and all Shades of Grey".......2007-05-18

This is a collection of black and white photographs mostly taken during the Prohibition and Depression eras for the tabloid "The Daily News". Most of what could be said about this book is already here in the reviews listed, nevertheless, it is worth repeating that "New York Noir" is an important addition to any collection of books on photography, and essential for anyone with an interest in the history of photojournalism. It would also be useful for anyone with an interest in social history; particularly of big city life during the American 1930s, 40s & 50s.

Most of the photos here are of crime scenes, and a few suicides thrown in. Crime scenes are mysteries; we all sense there is a story there. But the real mystery in this book is who were the guys who took these photographs? Whoever they were, they had no idea they were setting down an arena for further developments in creativity - in film, in fiction and in graphic design. This was working class photography and these guys were simply on the job, trying to outdo each other in the quest for a better shot in time for the next issue, sparing little thought over notions of higher-order art. Except perhaps for Arthur Fellig (aka Weegee), who was apparently more astute when it came to ensuring acknowledgement for his work, most of the guys who worked for the newspapers were largely unheralded. They are now just names, long dead and forgotten. Many of the shots reproduced in this book are only credited with a surname, or are simply credited as "Daily News" photos - nobody can work out now who took the shot.

[...]The conditions under which these guys were working forged a new creative genre, now commonly known as `NOIR'. It was an oppressive era, politically and socially, equipment was still heavy and unwieldy, they had to contend with light (additional lighting was used where it was deemed necessary to illuminate, not for artistic effect) and weather variables and while access to crime scenes were not yet barred to newspaper folks, access was sometimes restricted for other reasons. Check "The Trigger's Squeezed" and "Empire State Suicide"; both demonstrate how restricted access forced the photographers to use unusual camera angles, resulting in distant shots with long lines and deep, extended shadows which, together with the subject matter concerned, creates a sense of oppressiveness, of callous unconcern, of cold doom, and of finality (this can be keenly sensed in "Killer's End"); these are what are now regarded as the essential ingredients of good, classic noir film and associated imagery.

What makes a photograph (and for that matter, any piece of good art) a `classic' is that it alludes to a story, or it at least contains something that will intrigue viewers through the ages. While much of the information for the shots in this book, including the names of the persons involved could be traced (the corresponding synopses are listed at the back), there remain unanswered questions. How was it that the two ladies could tolerate each other's presence at the grave of their man in "A Bigamist Mourned"? What was it that a pretty doll such as Anna Downey saw in John Collins, a hardened killer? ("Until Death Do Us Part"). Why did the gangsters have such flippant attitudes? Check the aspect of Louis Capone on his way to Sing Sing in "En Route To The Chair".

There are other questions for which answers could have been provided in the book somewhere, after some further research. It would have been helpful to know the process and exactly why some of the photos were "touched-up" to ensure they were fit for publication. And who were some of these photographers? And what was the system for acknowledgement and payment? Something could have been said about the cops; perhaps some reasoning for their attitudes and conduct with the public. [...]

Regardless of all of this, the book is very exciting. The images reflect the developments in technology, particularly with the flash; first the bar flash, then the bulb, and then finally the `flash gun'. The sharper and clearer shots, including those taken under brilliant light are perhaps the most striking, and what are most easily recognized as `noir' imagery. All together, these are shots of a period in history which will never return. The assemblage of ephemera of that age; the hats, the shoes and clothing styles, the hair styles, the cars, the buildings and everything else can never be reproduced. And there is something very sexy about it all.

For a further exploration in this photography genre, I strongly recommend "City of Shadows: Sydney Police Photographs 1912-1948"; with shots of folks who were colder, cheaper and meaner, and where things seem even more surreal. To see how such newspaper shots influenced photography in a creative sense, see if you can find "Retail Fictions: The Commercial Photography of Ralph Bartholomew Jr." - still around in some `seconds' bookshops.

5 out of 5 stars A Shock To The System.......2005-03-07

Warning: don't expect this book to be easy on the eyes, it is far from that. This is not for children, weak stomaches, or people with heart conditions. The shock is enough to make your heart race when viewing some of these photos. Yet you find yourself staring, sometimes maybe wondering what the photographer was thinking as he took these shots. The book is well done, but you have to be interested in true crime to, if you will, appreciate this collection of photos. It also helps if you appreciate life, then these photos will really have an effect on you, but it also shows you that society really did not change that much since these photos were taken. NOT a good coffee table book, though.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Iconic Photography Evokes an Era........2004-05-25

The "Daily News" debuted in New York City in 1919. It was to be a newspaper for the common man, which meant not especially literate and frequently immigrant. Its currency was images, the more sensational the better. Nothing sold like sex, murder, and mayhem, graphically illustrated. By 1925, the "Daily News" was the best-selling newspaper in the nation. By 1930, twenty-three per cent of its pages were devoted to crime.

"New York Noir" is a selection of about 125 images from the "Daily News" archives, taken from the 1920s through the 1950s. Some are sad, some comical, some grotesque. They're an interesting comment on American urban culture of the time. Many of these photos would spark outrage if any newspaper were to print them today. Their lurid content earned the "Daily News" pointed criticism from many a moralist at the time. But that never hurt business. The style of the photographs had an immistakable influence on cinema and popular culture which continues to this day. The technical limitations that produced starkly flashed foregrounds and pitch-black backgrounds are instantly recognizable in Hollywood films, just as the corruption displayed in the photographs was reflected in popular entertainment. The demeanor of gangsters and thugs -often posed for the photographers- became iconic. Tabloid photojournalists may have wanted only to get the shot that no one else could, but they produced some incredible -and incredibly influential- photographs that have only become more fascinating with time.

Luc Sante introduces "New York Noir" with an essay about the history of tabloid journalism. Editor William Hannigan follows with a history of the "Daily News" and its influence on Film Noir. Both of these essays are very readable and worthwhile. The photographs are mostly one-to-a-page and quite sharp. They are all captioned. There is a section of "Synopses" in the back of the book, which provides further information about the stories behind each photograph, when available. I really appreciate this section, which is conveniently organized by page number. Some of the photos really leave the reader hanging, wondering who those people are and how things turned out. You can find out by turning to the back of the book.

I recommend "New York Noir" to photography and film noir buffs. Some of these evocative photographs are not for the squeamish, but they have made , and continue to make, quite an impression.

5 out of 5 stars A Step Back In Time.......2001-08-25

If you are a fan of photography, this book is definately for you. NEW YORK NOIR is chock full of amazing photographs that were the staple of the "New York Daily News." In this book, you get to see some of the poignant images that help define the term noir, and its connection to the silver screen industry, not to mention its effects on tabloid journalism. Many of these same black and white photogrpahs were often used as references to assist in making modern day motion pictures, helping to give a look into the past. From the days of "Three-Gun" Turner to the electrocution of Ruth Snyder, this book captures New York's horrid crime life in a candid, in-your-face style. There is nothing but unhidden truth in each and every photograph. NEW YORK NOIR is a well designed book loaded with powerful images and somewhat detailed descriptions. It is fascinating, riveting, and gives you a decent look at the roots of photojournalism. You can't help but be intrigued by the gritty, graphic photos that once graced the pages of a daily newspaper. It is one amazingly good book.

5 out of 5 stars Good Research Book!.......2001-02-26

I found this book while searching for information for a project that I was doing on the Wright Brothers. I found it very useful with lots of information about them and also a few pictures. It was also nice because it had information on other people who had experimented with flight as well as the Wright Brothers. That was nice because I knew from my research on the topic that the Wright Brothers had been "helped" by people who lived before and during their time, so it was nice that this book gave them credit. I would recomend this book more as a research book then a sit down and read kind of book. I would recomend to anyone doing a project on the Wright Brothers, the history of flight, or a project on anyone else in the book.

Just as previous generations witnessed a hard fought battle for supremacy between the Empire State and the Chrysler, the John Hancock and the Sears, the Middle Eastern rivals are locked in a battle to be the first to build the biggest.

An ideal Christmas or Birthday present for the teenager who is passionate about aviation and a good source of basic information on flight and the personalities, events and aircraft that have forged its history.

Cunningham makes his home in home in China and takes a decidedly Chinese perspective in this book. For this reason alone I give it two stars, as it is difficult to find a writer who has so immersed himself in the local culture and yet at the same time so consistently parrots the Party line (as in CCP).

One must therefore read this tract with a jaundiced eye. Cunningham represents a growing but altogether still small disgruntled American expatriate community in China which spares no opportunity to assail its homeland but nonetheless covets its passports.

Cunningham is a regular commentator for CCTV-9, the Chinese government's official English language channel, and can be seen on the misnamed show "Dialogue." Judge for yourself whether his precarious position and the need to curry favor in it might cloud his own judgement of the issues raised in this book.

While it is certainly true that most Western journalists do not attempt to provide a balanced perspective in their China reporting, the same can be said in reverse of Xinhua News Agency.

Interrogate this freelancing journalist's conclusions or otherwise take them with a grain--er--bag of salt.

In China the foreign journalists always see American democracy and human rights. However often the foreigner point of view is inacurate and based on the views of other foreigner people. Reaching for the Sky is the first book I read by a Englishman or American about China that has a new point of view. Many people can learn something from this book in Beijing even though they don't want to talk about it. There is additionally some new information in this book.

                          Book Description

The serene life of the irrepressibly optimistic little girl was disturbed. Child-play and fantasies gave way to fear and anguish. Wild thoughts were going through her mind while the German bombs were falling nearby her picturesque retreat:

How dare they disturb my peaceful space? Who are these people who want to conquer the world? Why arenÂ't they satisfied with their own terra firma, their own hideaways and retreats, their own Camelot? Why would they bother my magical surroundings and the environment of all the other children of other lands? DonÂ't they have dreams, other than destroy other peopleÂ's dreams? WerenÂ't they ever children themselves, or better yet, donÂ't they have children of their own? DonÂ't they know that, above all, children need to feel safe and secure, warm and loved?

Only three chapters were completed with the anticipation that the conclusion of this book would be optimistic and cheerful, along with the fervent wish that never again would children have to live through the horrors of war and its dreadful consequences.

The dreadful morning of September 11, 2001, however, changed the mood of us all. The devastation of the horrific events in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania will haunt us forever.

Narrating the dreadful events from the vantage point of a child and making them sound so incredibly interesting it's a feat by itself. The author had my attention immediately and made me yearn for more. I had to finish it all in one reading and yet I did not want it to end. All the stories are superb.
I wish people in power, along with those who get satisfaction in creating turmoil through wars, would wake up and find other means of peaceful coexistence!!!.Ms. Psyhogeos, presents her case eloquently and kudos are in order!!!

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse of a forgotten world through the eyes of a child........2004-09-15

This was a book I could not put down once I had taken it up. The author's childhood memories provide a valuable historical insight into conditions in rural Greece during the horrors of the Second World War and the subsequent Civil War. The author captures perfectly the limited range but vivid experience of childhood.
Most memorable are the moving pen portraits of unforgettable characters: such as the tragic "Lady in Black", of whom it was said that "The history of a nation is written on her face", and the sadistic former collaborator "Mister John", who dominated a small town during the Civil War, and killed the poor and unfortunate at a whim for his own amusement.
It is not surprising that the author, who emigrated to the USA from such a background, found her new home a land of freedom and opportunity. Yet it is disappointing that she never drew any conclusions from the fact that the likes of "Mister John" were sustained in their authority by the US Embassy, which exercised effective control over Greece at the time, and which ran concentration camps every bit as brutal as those of the Nazis, and which governed the country through former Nazi collaborators such as "Mister John"; and all in the name of preserving freedom and democracy.
Still - this was not written as a history book. As a collection of childhood reminiscences it is unbeatable.

                          5 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC BOOK.......2004-08-16

I'm in Greece for the Olympics and going by a book exhibit I purchased this book because I liked the title and I thought it will make a pleasant read while going from one event to the next.I was thrilled by it and I couldn't wait to get into a computer and write this. What a fantastic story!! How beautifully one expresses recollections of childhood.I doubt that I would've liked to have had the sad experiences the author narrates of her childhood, nonetheless, I would've loved to have had the talent to write such a poignant book.I will recommend it to all my friends, it is a story that should be read...Wish I could write more about it but I have to go to my next event which is Basketball. READ PLEASE : REACHING FOR THE SKY: CHILDHOOD RECOLLECTIONS OF WAR AND PEACE, I can guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy it!!

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've read this year!.......2004-08-09

Indeed it is the best book I've read this year and I read a lot. I was given the book as a birthday gift by a friend and I thank her for her wonderful taste. I've read it on a flight to Brussels and I could not put it down. The emotions the author expressed throughtout the book kept me captivated. It is difficult to choose few of the short intertwined stories (they'are all of high interest), but if I have to pick only two I will opt for the one on "first love" and the other on "Dick" the author's dog. Well, I cannot say enough for this exceptional story, the sentiments of a little girl towards war and its results is a cry for PEACE and BROTHERHOOD, the ruined dreams and lost childhood innocence, touch deeply the heart. I loved it! I wish there were many books like this. Beutifully narrated, eloquently expressed! Congratulations to the author and many thanks Anne for making my birthday and travel so pleasant!!!

3 out of 5 stars Promise of book unfulfilled.......2004-07-25

I wanted to love this book but I couldn't. The author is obviously intelligent, well educated, and a perfectly fine writer (technically speaking), but for me, she lacks the ability to convey the full depth of wisdom and understanding that these rich experiences must have imprinted on her. The book is a series of short stories that, while interesting, did not truly touch my heart. Given the great breadth and depth of material Ms. Psyhogeos had to work with, I feel she could have done much better.
