I found this text very frustrating. There is no instruction in technique beyond some simple perspective lessons. If you want to know how to accurately render different materials you will have to find another book. You can tell there are many more steps he uses to achieve his renderings, possibly even the use of other materials or media with his markers, but there is no information about it in his book. It is the text our professor uses for our Intro to Color Rendering class and I think there has to be something better than this!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best on the subject.......2007-02-06

An excellent reference text for both the student of design and professional. Beautifully illustrated with step-by- step instructions explaining the mediums and techniques in their use to acheive maximum results!

5 out of 5 stars Pat Arnold's Review of Sketching and Rendering Interior Spaces.......2007-01-11

I really feel that the book was written in easy to use format. The instructions were very clear and concise.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but text should be formatted differently.......2005-12-22

I was disappointed with this book. I felt it needed more examples from different artists, rather than just the author's work. In addition, the book uses strange font and formatting which is sometimes difficult to read. In general, the information is easy to understand, but I have found other books present the same information in more concise terms. Okay to add to a collection, but not recommended to be the main source for any interior design project.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-01-16

I am a Graphic Design student in Kansas City. Finding anyone to teach you marker rendering is impossible, yet the field demands you have this talent. This book is a great start. I've looked all over for good books on this subject and they are rare. The book is in FULL color, with plenty of exercises. He also tells you the exact marker he used in each drawing, to keep u on track. And works through all perspective problems. It's inspiring just flipping through the pages. However, it still demands practice and discipline, but with this book it will help. If you've been scared of marker rendering, start with this book, it will get u on your feet.

    Book Description

By today's standards, men wore formal dress every day in the 1890s. The color lithographs and line drawings of men dressed for work that are shown here bear striking contrast to men in the streets now. That very fact makes these clothes more than interesting today, they are actually time capsules for the lifestyle of a century ago. Heavy woolen cloth that has lasted a hundred years, and practical styles that were always comfortable and smart-looking bear witness to the time before automobiles and electricity. Now they have become antiques themselves. The hundreds of cloth swatches that appear have subtle patterns and plenty of texture to withstand much use. Vintage clothing collectors and designers will marvel at their variety.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifullyi llustrated by some very good photographers.......2003-05-28

I have mixed emotions about this book. The book is beautifully illustrated by some of the leaders in the wedding field. The tone of the book, though, is often gushingly sentimental, which may be the state of wedding photography today (Try out a fuzzy picture of a bride daydreaming over her SHOES). Still, Hurter tries to present a balanced picture of wedding photographer as it is today - discussing traditional vs. photojournalism approaches and their pros and cons.
The pictures are well-worth seeing, but if Hurter's style turns you off, you might be more rewarded by Steve Sint's "Weddding Photography: Art, Business and Style,'' which also is beautifully illustrated but more down to earth, practical and objective. Better still, read them both and find a balance somewhere in the middle.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant Primer on Wedding Photography.......2003-04-14

Unlike many how-to photography books of this genre, The Best of Wedding Photography is a very beautiful book filled luscious wedding photographs. The photographers selected are from well-known wedding photographers in the field. For the photographs alone, you will want to go back to this book again and again. It is also wonderful handbook on photographic tips and techniques from the masters in the field. Great advice on portraits, groups, lighting, various approaches and albums. All these topics are illustrated with lavish pictures. It is a wonderful primer for anyone starting out in the business.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-09-09

A great resource for anyone either entering the Senior Portrait market, or seeking to refresh business and photography techniques. As one who works a lot with teens, I believe that the author's sense of how to work with them througout the entire process is right on - refreshing and honoring of Teen spirit. The photos and posing suggestions are helpful, as are the ideas and results from several very accomplished Senior Portrait artists.

Definitely worth adding to your library

      3 out of 5 stars Great inspiration.......2007-06-08

Good inspiration! Only thing this book lacks is really how it was done. If only it had a page after each concept telling how it was done this book would be absolutely perfect! But if your starting out this is what you should read so you can know what you dont know and where to start your education!

5 out of 5 stars More than I expected!!! A+++++.......2006-08-25

I ordered this book with the hopes of expanding my photography from wedding and family/children portrait work to do senior work. And this book provides great deatils about getting into this line of work. But it does much more. It covers details for all types of portrait work to fine tune your photography with chapters on proper posing, lighting and much more. Whether you are just starting or have been in the business for a while you will benefit if you read and apply the information within. Great Job!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent senior photo book.......2006-02-19

Bill Hurter has managed to assemble a collection of some of the finest senior photographers in the country to create an exceptional set of images and text. This is like the title implies, the best in senior photography.

This book is a must-have for all senior portrait studios

      2 out of 5 stars Very amaturish.......2004-07-13

Start by looking at the cover. This book as so many digital ideas (not what we were looking for) but they chose such a poor image for the cover. Instead of such gimicky digital ideas, maybe Mr. Hunter and the others should have retouched the cover image. Blood shot eyes, yellow teeth, a floating eye and stray hairs will put most professional photographers out of business in less than a year. We have been in business for over 15 years and are now thinking just about anyone can write a book. Maybe we will.

          Bride of Deimos Vol. 1:

Long ago, a brother and sister, lived happily on Mount Olympus until they fell in love. The gods were so angry about their forbidden love that they exiled them from the mountain, turned the brother into a demon, and imprisoned the sister in the deep ocean. As her body rotted under the waves, she asked her demon brother to find a girl that looked like her so that she could possess a new body. In the modern world, the demon finally finds the correct match: a high school girl who looks exactly like his beloved sister. Instead of offering her up for possession, however, the demon falls in love with her. Jealous, his sister sends Death and Onis (two Japanese ghosts) to take the girl's life! This popular manga series was the basis for an anime film directed by Rintaro, who recently won international acclaim for his direction of Metropolis.

4 out of 5 stars Nice to finally be able to properly read the pages!.......2003-09-10

I was introduced to the first volume of DEIMOS NO HANAYOME [Bride of Deimos] in 1983. Since then I've acquired all the volumes through #17. I've got the video, the record [a mixture of drama and song], and I've read fan translations of some of the stories. Still, I was pleased to find out that there are English language volumes because my Japanese language skills have never been more than rudimentary. I could make out the basics of the stories, but it's nice to get the details.

This volume does have all the stories from volume one: 1. Minako meets her stalker, Deimos, and discovers he considers her to be his bride. 2. Deimos' chosen victim is Minako's own cousin. Is there anything that can be done to save Ryou? 3. This one opens up on a boy locking his mother in the basement. Now it's 5 years later and he's attracted to Minako. Deimos warns her away from Natsuhiko. Should she listen? 4. Deimos says there's a frightening truth behind a familiar Japanese legend. If this isn't one of his tricks, one of the teachers at Minako's school is in grave danger. 5. Why are people developing a shadow in the shape of the Devil Lily of Ghost Fire Island on their bodies? Now Minako is one of the victims and must seek the answer if she is ever to be cured. 6. This is Deimos' origin. It's not the same as the Greek/Roman myths, as you can tell from the back of the book. Venus is tired of waiting to take over Minako's body. She wants that body *now*! 7. In this we meet a crying Noh mask. Why does it cry? Yes, it's another tragic love story. 8. The disfigured racer and his blind beloved are the subject of the last tale and it shows what Deimos is willing to do to prove his point.

The copyright date is 1975. Those fans familiar with Ms.Ashibe's art in "Crystal Dragon" will find this earlier work more "cartoony", but it's still quite effective.

That should be "Ms.", not "Mr." Tsukiko's Secret for the title of the third story. [In the original, it's Tsukiko Sensei, "Sensei" being a suffix used with the surnames of teachers, doctors, scholars, etc. My old grammar notes text says it implies more respect than "san". Also, the kanji used for her name are "moon" (tsuki) and "child" (ko).

For the curious, I'll provide the meanings for the kanji in the little ovals on p. 177 are [starting from the tree and moving closer to elderly Mr. Kogorou]. I looked most of them up in my little READING AND WRITING JAPANESE book. The others I had to find in my Nelson's JAPANESE-ENGLISH CHARACTER DICTIONARY: "E - To depend on", "Han - generally; to carry, to turn; to enjoy", "Nya - if" (I know the hiragana are "ni ya," but Nelson's "nya"), "Ha - wave [as in sea or ocean]", "Ra - silk gauze, thin silk", "Mitsu [not just "mi", according to my Nelson's] - secrecy; denseness (of population); minuteness, carefulness, fineness", "Ta - many, much, abundant", "Ko - old, former times; reason", "Toku - virtue, power of comanding love and respect", "A - flatter, fawn upon".

Personally, I think they should have used "terror", the other meaning of Deimos, because it's more frightening than "fear".

The pictorial cover is actually from volume 14. The original dustjacket shows Minako from the hips up. She's wearing a pink plouse with a frill around the collar and cuffs, and a red jumper (in the American sense of the word). She's looking to the left and seems more puzzled than distressed. The background is black except for a couple of bare, grey tree branches, and Deimos' face (colored a pale blue) and part of one of his horns (white).
His eyes are green in this picture. They're blue in later dustjackets. The back of my dustjacket has a gold oval with the face and hair of Venus (blue eyes, strawberry blond hair) and four versions of her butterfly form coming toward her, the last partially in front of her hair. I'm pretty sure that the image on the back of this cover is on my record, but I'd have to finish moving some boxes that I have in front of the record player at the moment to get to it.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting older horror manga.......2003-08-25

This series is from the '70's explaining the clothes & hair, but it's worth it. The set-up--sibling gods Deimos & Venus love one another, thus are punished--Venus's beauty destroyed, her body rotting in the underworld, & Deimos turned into a devil. He seeks the reincarnation of Venus to revive her, finding it in Minako who is very resistant to Deimos's advances. He's persistant & as the story advances, seems to be falling for Minako as he is repulsed by some of his former lover's tricks on the girl.
In Volume 4, Venus plays more games with Minako in the 1st story, Myth of the Red Nails, drawing her back to the Roman god world full of romantic twists & cursed lovers as Juno nails another female pursued by her husband. Deimos is almost unseen in this & the 2nd tale--only a few frames questioning his ex's actions.
In The Haunted Mansion a girl is betrothed to a rich man, but she doesn't love him & is killed by him. Minako escapes a rainy night at this mansion, but of course it's not a quiet night.
Sorrowful Vampire--a hit & run leads to an apparent series of vampire deaths. A suspicious girl smelling of lilies is at the center of it all, but even Deimos is mislead on this one, although he does save Minako.
Dolls Do Not Die--more typical deal with the devil for immortality with the usual twist. Deimos seems to enjoy his work.
In Fruit of the Black Mass the story echoes our devil's own with a sister in love with her brother gives herself to evil, but dies in the effort so of course Minako stumbles into the house, becoming possessed by the sister's spirit.
In A Burying Beetle's Requiem Deimos gets his own story & once more questions his goal of saving his sister by taking Minako to Hades. A father blaming his daughter for his wife's death is killed by the daughter.

5 out of 5 stars Crossing Silver Creek.......2004-04-26

Surely, truth, beauty and goodness lie within the soul of Jayson Duffy. His book, Crossing Silver Creek, revealing episodes in his life, is beautifully written but far too short. His readers will hunger for more.

5 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup on Steroids.......2003-05-13

Unlike the popular, saccharine Chicken Soup series, Duffy writes narratives that not only touch the true nature of humaness but also incorporate great literary style. This look at life is sometimes uplifting and sometimes sad but always well written.

You will not be disappointed with this book. It will allow you to connect with another human being and learn more about yourself.

          5 out of 5 stars A Different Genre.......2003-05-12

Crossing Silver Creek consists of 20 narratives, in addition to a foreword, that put a positive spin on personal experiences--at times when the positive isn't as likely to find. Topics range from trout fishing in Northeast Iowa to coping with loss. Duffy's lyrical writing includes a variety of literary techniques that make his storytelling naturally compelling. The author is candid with his personal experiences from boyhood to adulthood. As the reader, there were moments when I felt as if I had shared the same experiences and made the same discoveries. Read this--you'll enjoy it.
