Book Description
Small houses are no longer synonymous with cheap houses and lack of privilege. Instead, they symbolize a range of culturally coded values: compactness, efficiency, discrimination, discreteness, minimalism. Opening with a detailed exploration of the social and historical background behind compact housing in the twentieth century, this book goes on to feature thirty-seven illustrated case studies that represent some of the best examples of small houses built worldwide within the past decade.
Plan areas range from 75 to 1600 square feet and each project embodies a particular design approach. The case studies are organized into three chapters-Rural Retreats; Urban and Suburban Bases; and Small Clusters and Multiples-and include work by such architects as Toyo Ito, Herzog and de Meuron, Simon Ungers, Enric Miralles, LOT/EK, and Kazuyo Sejima. The book includes over 300 full-color photographs illustrating the houses' interiors and exteriors as well as detailed plans.

Good reference addition to home library.......2007-03-09
A good book with some nice case studies. Not a bad addition to my reference library. I'm giving it 3 stars only because a good 1/4 of the featured homes are not that great and seemed out of place in this book.
Nice to have in your reference library.......2006-11-10
This book has some good material to get the creative juices going. It is a nice collection of interesting designs that give a pretty good sampling of what innovative contemporary residences can look like. I would have liked to see more technical information and details.
Expensive, expensive, expensive.......2006-05-15
These are houses for very rich people who never have to worry about the resale value of their house. The first chapter was very interesting, a brief review of housing history. I enjoyed seeing the workman's cottage with the unheard-of luxury of a plumbed bath - set flush to the kitchen floor and kept covered when not in use. I wonder how many people forgot and fell into it the middle of the night?
This book will be of no help at all if your interest in building a small house is motivated by economy or a desire to minimize the adverse environment impact of the construction. That said, there are a few really good ideas and some astonishingly lovely houses. The Irish "boat house" would be a great place to watch a storm come in, with its glass wall. But I'm not sure why it needs a kitchen and a bath. And the chalet/cabin with a whole-wall "shutter" to cover its large glass picture window is clever. I liked the straw mats hanging as a sunshade off the broad eaves of the clay house in West Africa - it made the house look as if it belonged there, and made the space between the wall and the shade into more useful space.
But the tiny tiny cube house on top of the elevator shaft was just plain weird.
Kind of fun, not very practical.
Extreme examples.......2004-04-09
The introductory chapter, a brief history of architect-designed small houses (large expensive houses usually get this treatment), was the best part for me, as the author is very knowledgeable. Here he describes the groundskeepers' homes on large estates, and the later workers' cottages built by large companies, that started this category. The rest, however, is the standard thou-shalt-covet-thy-neighbor's-house pictures of very recent, attention-grabbing, expensive, glass-crazy fashion statements.
Book Description
A visual look at the architectural details of smaller residential spaces
The Contemporary Design Details series takes a highly visual look at architectural design details that are more often dealt with in a technical textbook format. The books take readers on a tour of the best details designed by great architects around the world. The series provides a powerful presentation of the most challenging and evolving architectural and design categories.
Small Environments focuses on the type of architectural details that make up distinctive residential spaces under 1,200 square feet [120 square meters]. It presents recent work by architects from around the globe in color photographs and architectural drawings. Rather than simply another compendium of small projects, the book is structured according to categories of architectural detail. It includes sections on components essential to the design of small spaces, such as built-in pieces, mobile systems, storage, outdoor rooms, siting strategies and daylighting details.

Book Description
In Imaging the Early Medieval Bible, five outstanding medievalists challenge conventional wisdom on the beginnings of biblical illustration. Traditionally, scholars have maintained that the subjects and format of Bible illustration were largely determined by archetypes of the earliest years of Christian artistic culture. Taken together, the essays in this book present a convincing argument that illustrated and decorated Bibles were shaped by ad hoc decisions that resulted in a creative variety of approaches.
First, John Lowden asserts that biblical manuscript illumination is more likely to have derived from, than to have inspired, biblical monumental painting. Katrin Kogman-Appel provides a thorough survey of the debate over how Jewish motifs entered Christian art. In her discussion of Roman manuscript art, Dorothy Verkerk proposes that the celebrated Ashburnham Pentateuch, rather than the hypothetical Leo Bible proffered by Koehler, should be taken as a witness to the capital's approach to Bible illustration and the kind of model sent to the monastic scriptoria north of the Alps. Lawrence Nees presents the northern Bibles, Insular and Carolingian, as individual commissions for specific donors made at certain specific moments in time. Finally, John Williams studies the Bible of 960 in León, an ideal vehicle to examine the premises underlying reigning theories of the evolution of Bible illustration. Although its format and extensive imagery have been taken as a sign that it reflected early stages of Bible illustration, it stands revealed as owing little to pictorial traditions.
Taken together, these essays present a convincing argument that illustrated and decorated Bibles were shaped by ad hoc decisions that resulted in a creative variety of approaches.

Equus: Finding the Mystery and Majesty .......2005-12-08
Christopher Makos has done the impossible: he has successfully elected to extend his special gifts as a portrait artist of famous people and as a sensual documentarian of the male nude to the realm of animals. EQUIPOSE is a survey of supple and wondrously articulate images of horses that goes far beyond the curious eye and enters the realms of sensuality/spirituality.
Makos uses the same observation skills for which he has earned acclaim in books and magazines and applied those skills to capturing the musculature, the sheen, the power and the disparity between the surface and the underlying massive musculature of the horse. In tender close-up details Makos allows the light and his eye for detail to marry and the result is our being able to observe the veins, the individual flicks of the mane, the eyes, the torsos and the legs of these beautiful animals is inspiring.
If it sounds as though this portfolio is about sensuality then the reader is justly prepared for this particularly satisfying foray into yet another realm of the prodigious gifts of Makos. I am reminded of the play 'Equus' in which a boy's psyche is closely bound to the horse. That is the kind of romanticism that Makos captures. And the results are stunning! Highly recommended. Gidddddeup!.......2005-11-03
Christopher, you have done it again! And this time, with my favorite animal!
The photo's are INCREDIBLE! I just love horses...believe me! I love mounting them; riding them; talking with them; not talking with them!
This is truly one of your best works so far!
A Horse of A Different Color.......2005-11-03
Christopher Makos is one of the most exciting photographers working today. In this gorgeous new book, he has taken one of the most perplexing of all animals - horses - and demystified them with his incredible and candid shots and angles. A must for any horse lover, or anyone who simply admires the beauty of amazing photography.
Makos in the Winner's Circle reviewed by In the Know .......2005-10-26
Makos trains his practiced eye on horses and comes up with a fresh point of view. This book is a departure from his usual subject matter of objects, artists, and young men, yet the Makos aesthetic is present throughout. The photographs are beautiful and striking depictions of horses and the equestrian environment. Makos has achieved the rare coup of giving the viewer a new take on a classic subject. This is not a book of horse photos, but rather a new book of Makos photos that happen to be about horses.
Fine book.......2005-10-26
Its a fine addtion to any photography book collection. Chris is an amazing photographer. He has a great for eye for classic beauty. This is a new direction and a good one. Its very collectable, as all of Makos books are.

Cutie Hentai..........2001-06-06
The second volume of the Sorcerer Hunters manga is actually better than the first, and infinitely better than the popular anime. For one thing, Omishi Rei's artwork is just lovely, and I find it much more satasfying than the anime, which looks a little rushed. To my delight, the indomitable, cross-dressing Mille Feuille appears in this volume (he's the aqua-haired Knight who has such a small part in the anime), along with a crazed Necromancer, a zombie girl, and other of SH's trademark lunatic villains. The manga, of course, preceeded the anime, and provides fuller, funnier, accounts of the Sorcerer Hunter's adventures. The only fault is the slightly lacking translation from MixxManga, who is notorius wit fans for doing rather unsatasfactory jobs at their translations. Look out for spelling and grammatical mistakes... Sorcerer Hunters is a goofy sword-and-sorcerery journey, with mythical backdrops and a catchy cast of characters. Check this one out if you can handle a light-hearted fantasy world where sorcerers, mudity, crossdressers, and shaping-changing-over-sexed boys are just part of the nine-to-five...
I love this manga.......2000-10-16
This book is really funny. My favorite character is Carrot I think he is really cute althought he's a pervert *-*.Its a very entertaining story, if you are an anime fan you will love it :) . I saw some episodes in VhS and the ending theme is gourgeos^_^ Anyway if you are an anime fan and you love sorcerer hunters write to cristalmoon16@hotmail.com:)
good even better than the first one.......2000-09-20
a truely wonderful manga. the style is a bit less elegant that I like but the story more than makes up for it. I like the way Carrot and Tira like each other in the manga unlike in the anime where Chocolate likes carrot. I do find the names a bit odd but it's okay. the basic story is these 3 (and sometimes 5 or more) characters like in a different world and they're job is to punnish corupt scorcerors.
Sorcerer Hunter..........2000-09-18
this is a great gn, but some it doesn't fully get the crdit it deserves... even though it gets very close to hentai, it's not... and the plot is REALLY good.. i don't wanna give anything away, but this is a MUST read if you're an anime/manga fan.
