Book Description
Do you have an ugly duckling kitchen? If so, take this book and learn how to transform it into the pretty and practical swan it was meant to be. Whether your kitchen is galley-shaped, U-shaped, L-shaped, or just plain small, this hands-on workbook offers ideas for kitchens that suit every lifestyle, from city singles to growing families.
The kitchen is the heart of every home: the place where we gather with our families and friends; where we prepare and share food; where we work, entertain, and eat. But many kitchens were not designed with all these functions in mind. As a result, they are too small, too dark, and too cramped -- when what we want is spacious, light, and comfortable.
With
Small Spaces Beautiful Kitchens, you can change all that. In its pages, you'll learn how to turn your kitchen -- no matter how small, how drab, how dysfunctional -- into the kitchen of your dreams.

Helpful advice and ideas.......2007-07-17
This book might be useful to more people than its title implies. The emphasis is on efficiency and small kitchens, but some of the kitchens in the book are not so small. Most of the advice will be helpful to anyone who is considering a kitchen renovation, regardless of the size of the room. Of course, a large kitchen gives one the option to create unused space that a small kitchen does not, so the book is especially helpful for people with space-limited kitchens. I use that term rather than "small" because the dimensions of my kitchen are largeish, but the layout of doors (all necessary) limits the cabinets and countertops in the room. I'm looking for creative ways to think about reconfiguring the space, and this book has been very helpful in terms of encouraging me to think about where to store things (items used less often can be outside the main kitchen space, for instance), what I typically do in the kitchen vs. sometimes do or rarely do, and how to plan a cohesive design style that works functionally and makes the kitchen a pleasant place for the cook. For example, I've been using wire shelving units as a temporary solution to my kitchen's lack of counters and storage space, but I wouldn't have considered this as a permanent design option before reading this book. That wouldn't be everyone's preference, but this book provides examples of several design styles to suit a variety of tastes. Other kitchen books provide more advice about the nitty-gritty of kitchen functions such as including enough electrical outlets, materials choices, etc. For that sort of information, I recommend "This Old House: Kitchens" (an oldie but still the best). To help you think about what you want and need in your kitchen in terms of function and visual appeal, especially if every inch counts or if the kitchen is part of another room, this book is a good investment.
small spaces, beautiful kitchens.......2007-05-12
I am pleased with this book. It has a lot of ideas for the kitchen that I would have never thought of. If you are undecided and can't figure out just what you want this is a good book. I'm very pleased.
Lovely design, useful tips.......2005-06-11
If you like contemporary, modern, eclectic, and retro styles, this book is great to look at. If not, borrow it from the library just for the text. I have made more practical moderations to my original ideas from this book than any of the dozens of other books and magazines that I own.
For instance, I originally was set on installing a microwave/range hood combination over our stove. This book points out that having a microwave in this position is inconvenient, even dangerous since it is very high up and over an area that is frequently hot. Also, it is difficult for children to reach. Instead, a built-in microwave shelf in a different location makes more sense. The suggestion may not be as space-saving as my original plan, but made sense nonetheless. This coming from a family of four with an 11'x 8' kitchen.
The photos presented an assortment of styles, sizes, and cost-ranges although it leaned more toward high-end, contemporary, and larger than my kitchen.
I would have liked to see more photos with large key ingredients like refrigerators. I would have preferred to see more floor plans and actual room dimensions. Unfortunately, I have not seen a book yet that was strong in this area. I think that any decorating book that has the word `small' on it's cover should strive to include those details.
Book Description
BISHOUJO (beautiful girls) is indispensable in the world of manga. Even if you can draw women, it is difficult to draw attractively. This book explains how to draw hair, faces, eyes and figure of BISHOUJO in the Japanese manga style.
Customer Reviews:
Great for drawing manga.......2007-08-24
This is a great book for learning how to draw manga girls. Not the best for ideas on actual characters or outfits, this book goes more into HOW stuff works and lays over, and how the body itself is formed, which is tremendously helpful anyway. I recommend it to fans of manga and anime.
Love it a lot!.......2007-07-11
It's not one of my top favorite How to Draw Books I have, but I still love it quite a bit. It helps to get your characters down in the way you want to and it also has things that many other books like this don't. Next to my favorite "Occult and Horror" and "Girls Life Illustration File" it's one of the best out there.
its very pretty but..........2007-04-17
i do think its pretty, cute, and funny (like the cat girl pouncing on a little mouse that looks like jerry!) but there is some pictures of naked girls, ones wearing reveling clothes, some are fully dressed but have [...]. so be sure not to the book to little kids. but there are gorgeous ones, like mermaids. i hope it will inspire its readers ;)!
This is a great book..........2006-03-09
If you would like to learn how to draw women taking showers, stripping down to their panties, languishing in bed naked, prancing about in negligee or serving cocktails in a bunny costume. Otherwise, I would suggest another book.
Great for artists with some training already .......2005-05-25
I agree with many of the others that this is not a beginner's "how to" book, but it has a lot of great examples to use if you are interested in improving Manga drawing technique. There is a wealth of examples in the book, to include "chibi" figures- "squashed", childlike figures. Again, the drawback is that there is very little step-by-step done, so an absolute beginner who has no experience with proportions and form may not like this book as much as I did.

Book Description
From the devastation of the World Trade Center in 2001, through the mountains of Afghanistan, to the battle for Iraq, New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks' images have made history as well as recorded it. Hicks presents the stark but dignified realities of everyday life during the conflict and its aftermath coexisting with pathos and grace.
Customer Reviews:
Tyler Hicks is an Extraordinary Photographer as is the book.......2006-10-06
Contrary to the first reviewer's misinformed and erroneous comment about "are the photographs faked," Hicks is one of the world's finest, most authentic and reliable photojournalists. This magisterial book is a good entrance into the world of his extraordinary visual testimony about the world's events. It is not necessary for me to add more than what Ms. Hegland has already contributed villifing the outlandish accusations promulgated about Hick's work. We, unfortunately, live in a time of easy words and radiant mistruths spread with electrical velocity. If only the hard-won expression of what passes in this life were so easily and readily available to be swallowed and digested.
I recommend this book and the entire scrupulously honest work of Mr. Hicks.
It is magisterial and breath-stealing. Allow yourself this wind-swept moment: by swallowing Hick's photographs, you shall be transformed.
cheers,
A truly impressive collection of the many truths that comprise the realities of the contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq.......2006-03-11
With vivid photography by Tyler Hicks and thoughtful essays from John F. Burns And Ian Fisher of the New York Times, Histories Are Mirrors: The Path Of Conflict Through Afghanistan And Iraq is a truly impressive collection of the many truths that comprise the realities of the contemporary Afghanistan and Iraq. Histories Are Mirrors is a strong recommendation for students of International Studies in general, and the controversial involvement of the United States in these two Islamic nations.
Histories Are Mirrors.......2005-02-12
Our world is in a very tumultuous state. To many, the words "Iraq" and "Afghanistan" are just that... Words. Tyler Hicks' "Histories Are Mirrors" is an important record for our time. He offers the viewer a glimpse of what our global neighbors have to do to survive and exist. War is not pretty. And to those who live in comfort in countries free of continuous conflict, the idea of war is as foreign a concept as the land that they take place in. In my opinion it is the responsibility of all to seek out, view and to try and understand the issues at hand. Some people may consider a few of the photographs difficult to look at... But we must. Mr. Hicks' book is a testament to all those whose paths he has crossed on his journeys. Look at the photographs and look into the eyes of those affected.
Pictures of a changing world.......2005-02-10
People talk endlessly about how the world has changed since 9/11. In his new book, "Histories are Mirrors," Tyler Hicks doesn't talk about the changes, he records them in some of the most riveting photographs I've ever seen.
This book may be the best document to date of what has happened in our world since the World Trade Towers came down. From the Hicks's earliest pictures, taken at ground zero immediately after the attack, through the invasion of Afghanistan and on to Iraq, the viewer is taken step by step through world-changing events and the resulting hope, euphoria, death and destruction.
Hicks is one of the world's leading war photographers. Sometimes it seems barely a bullet was fired that he was not there to record. His pictures of the execution of a wounded Taliban soldier-previously splashed across the front page of the New York Times where Hicks is a staff photographer-are gut-wrenching. And there are many more like that: Marines in close-quarters combat in the cemetery in Najaf, Saddam's soldiers searching for downed Americans along the Tigris, bleeding Northern Alliance soldiers an arm's reach from the lens. The pictures of Iraqi prisoners fleeing the open doors of Abu Ghraib are alone worth the price of the book
But Hicks has another, more empathetic side as well. He goes into the homes of grieving families; he shows the funerals and the hospital wards, the parents who have lost children, the children who are now orphans. The viewer feels the human suffering that results as world leaders solve political problems with guns and bombs.
There are many talented, committed photojournalists working today. Two characteristics separate Hicks from the crowd. One is his persistence-he was one of a handful of journalists who remained in Baghdad during the US bombing campaign. The second is his artistry. Simply put, he understands how to make a riveting, often haunting picture in the quiet moments when there is no action.
Robert Capa, Eugene Smith and Larry Burrows are recognized as the preeminent war photographers of the twentieth century. All were brave beyond belief (Capa and Burrows died in Vietnam). Yet they are remembered as much for their artistry, and for the humanity in their photos. Tyler Hicks follows in their footsteps.

Customer Reviews:
A Twisted Treat.......1999-10-04
While Jim Davis is rarely associated with the modern day literary greats, this book reverses the assumption that the cartoon, "Garfield," is little more than an analogy for suicide. Alas, more than one of us has feared for Jon's life, as a combination of his general bad luck and Garfield's general maliciousness threaten to push poor Mr. Arbuckle over the edge. This book is a playful retreat from Davis's darker themes, in which Garfield becomes the mischevious provider of feline names, as opposed to his usual activities that send Jon to bed crying. This work propells Davis to the head of the proverbial class. Watch out "Family Circus!" Garfield is back in town!

"In the 1990s I have seen the rise of anti-intellectualism within Mormonism, including but not limited to BYU, to a degree that I would not have believed possible thirty years earlier. Perhaps those earlier beliefs that all truth was essentially harmonious were naive, but I see the new anti-intellectualism as driven by a fear fo losing adherents that seems to be a revelation of profound uneasiness on the part of Mormon leaders."

Customer Reviews:
Good History and a Good Read!.......2006-12-14
Highly recommended--I thought I would just skim through this book but I read it cover to cover. Boessenecker has a good, clean style that doesn't get in the way of the story, and an almost obsessive interest in his subject, as demonstrated by the obscure newspaper items and other sources he has tracked down and by the fact that he owns many of Morse's personal items that are photographed for illustration. Boessenecker had a great resource in the accounts Morse left of some of his gunfights and adventures, which provide the best blow-by-blow detail I've ever seen in a book about this period. Interwoven into the story is contextual detail about California history, geography, and social conditions, testifying to Boessenecker's expertise on this subject. This is one of the best books of Western history I've ever read. It provided me with a lot of insight into the life of the 19th century lawman.
BTW, I noticed that "Reviewer from New Mexico" gave this book a good review but only one star--that was clearly a mistake.
Review from Wild West magazine.......1999-09-19
In telling Morse's fascinating story, Boessenecker, a San Francisco-based attorney, often allows Morse to do the telling. (Yes, Harry was far more prolific with a pen than either Wyatt or Wild Bill). You'll also find plenty of solid insight into California's battle for law and order after the gold rush. . . . From now on, when someone sings of a lawman being "brave, courageous and bold," it just might make sense to think of Harry instead of Wyatt. Wild West Magazine, August 1999.
Review from New Mexico Historical Review.......1999-09-19
This work by an eminent writer on old-time outlaws and lawmen can be viewed from several vantage points: the storied career of Harry Morse, the ins and outs of law enforcement in the Old West, and the interplay between Hispanics and Anglos in Old California. Boessenecker describes Morse as a "gunfighter, manhunter, and sleuth whose career is without parallel in the history of the American frontier." More importantly, the author, like other western historians in recent years, shows the difference between the blood and thunder school of thought about Old West gunfighting lawmen who occasionally pinned on a silver star, and those individuals who saw law enforcement in the American West as a profession. As a career minded peace officer, Morse spent decades learning the techniques needed to investigate crimes and to track and capture outlaws and desperadoes. New Mexico Historical Review, April 1999.
A STORY OF AN UNSUNG HERO OF THE OLD WEST.......1998-11-12
HARRY MORSE WAS A HERO FORGOTTEN . HIS BRAVERY, TENACITY AND COURAGE FAR OUT SHINES THE OTHER MORE POPULAR WESTERN HEROES LIKE THE EARPS. HIS GUNFIGHT WITH JUAN SOTO IS EDGE OF THE SEAT EXCITEMENT AND HIS TALES OF ORDINARY DAY TO DAY LIFE IN OLD CALIFORNIA GIVES AN INSIGHT TO OUR HISTORY..GREAT READING.

Jelly Bryce.......2007-10-08
AN informative biography of real american lawman, a modern gunfighter. I have read other smaller bios of Agent Bryce, but this one is very informative. it shows the inside of the man and what it took to be an early American law enforcement officer.
It takes the reader along for ride through the depression era outlaws and lawmen.

Interesting but incomplete.......2004-04-20
I had to buy this book years ago. I bought 6 copies. One for each of my Zumwalt relatives (Father In Law, Brother In Law, Sister In Law, one for each of our two kids and of course one for us.) . Keeping in mind I married a Zumwalt girl. If you remember from the Chapter titled "Mean as Hell", Mr. Hall was killed by Mr. Zumwalt. That was my wifes Great Grandather. What was not made clear is that the Hall brothers were friends with the Zumwalt brothers. Due to some cattle rustling talk, the Hall brothers threatend to kill the Zumwalts on sight. There was a confrontation and needless to say it wasn't the Zumalts to hit the ground. Irony was that Hall was wearing the shirt that Zumwalt had bought him on his last birthday...The Zumwalts lost their ranch in the resulting trial..cost of courts/legal/ and lawyer fees. Mr. Zumwalt was aquited as the bottom line is Hall's threat ,as well as, went for his gun first..That was the way it was back then.
From my understanding Mr. Zumwalt had informed Mr. Harkey that he was a liar and to not cross paths with him again or he would live to regret it.
Over the years, I listen to this story over and over and never tire. One wonders that IF Mr. Harkey may have embellished a bit...It still makes good stories.
Enjoy, as it is the old west as it was.
A more realistic look at the life of a real western lawman.......2002-07-19
A fun vacation read. Anecdotes from a real wild west lawman -- who didn't do a lot of shooting and killing but somehow managed to be in the action none the less. It reminded me a little of the excellent Dustin Hofmann film, Little Big Man.

very surprising book.......2002-05-25
given the title, i was prepared to be unfavorably amused by this book but wound up thoroughly charmed by the direct and often witty descriptions and characterizations by this bona fide turn of that century wild west lawman, who, one must assume, was just as tough and unyielding as the 'hard cases' for whom this work is titled.
harkey's plain style and simple accounting of the events develops a remarkable bond of trust with the reader, and i came away almost with a casual sense of familiarity with some of the most savage and desperate bad men produced by that savage and desperate era.
recommend it very highly for anyone who would like to get a highly entertaining -- but pretty much unvarnished -- picture of life on the edge at that time.

Humorous adventurous........2004-03-04
I found myself being able to visualize the desert, fell the heat of the region and Florida mountains that Skelton speaks of. His writing is extrememly visual and you can almost feel the breath of the bad guys on the back of your neck.
Skelton finds the humor and idiosyncrisies in human nature as we try to finagle our way through life. The characters that he has come in contact with through his law enforcement career, has got to make you think that humor is the best medicine. The one thing that will carry you through the day.
I would highly recommend Down on the Border to get a taste of life in the deserts of the South west. You will find that every chapter will make you laugh and wanting to read more.
The illustrations were fantastic and comical and added to the humurous nature of adventures. The introduction with J. Jackson was truely rewarding seeing, as it demostrates Cops helping cops. Their lives and tales parrallel no matter where they are.
They should be rewarded highly for their service. Thank you for making an insane world seem humorous. I enjoyed the laughs.
Book Description
At 27 William Davis "Dave" Allison became the youngest sheriff in the State of Texas, elected at Midland County in 1888. He was still wearing a badge when gunned down by infamous cattle rustlers Hill Loftis (aka Tom Ross) and Milton Paul Good in 1923. Between times he was 6 times an elected sheriff; a member of the Texas Rangers and Arizona Rangers; Chief of Police at Roswell, New Mexico; personal bodyguard of Colonel William Cornell Green during the vicious 1906 mine strikes at Cananea, Mexico; livestock inspector; and he led the posse that caught and killed Mexican revolutionary Pascual Orozco in 1915. Devoid of bravado, yet fearless, and deadly when provoked, Dave Allison was described by a young cavalryman named George S. Patton as, "The most noted gunman here in Texas."

Product Description
"The Black Badge: The Life Of Deputy United States Marshal Bass Reeves," Paul L. Brady will keep you hanging on every word, every twist and turn in Bass Reeve's life. At a time when slavery was a very recent memory, and "Negroes" kept their place, Bass Reeves became a deputy marshal—known for his courage and skill with a gun. Unable to read or write, he would carry a handful of writs for the arrest of notorious outlaws, and always produce the right writ for the right man. He spent a lifetime upholding a legal system that failed to recognize him and members of his race as human beings, equal to whites.

A good sequel to Carlson's book on Horn.......1998-09-01
After reading "Killing Is My Specialty" I had to get Carlson's sequel on my recent trip through Wyoming. I found it in a bookstore in West Yellowstone, MT, leaving plenty of Wyoming time to read it.
Between the Horn book and the Lefors book, a mock trial had been held in Cheyenne wherein Horn was acquitted.
Although both books appear to be very well documented, I couldn't help but feel that Carlson may have a bit of bias in favor of Horn and against Lefors. Not being part of the Wyoming culture, it may be unfair to make that characterization, but it's what I felt.
An eminently readable book; not to be read without having read about Tom Horn first; preferably Carlson's account.
Book Description
Deputy Sheriff, Town Marshall, Deputy U.S. Marshall, Train Agent, Livestock Inspector, Dan Tucker was the quintessential lawman during the violent frontier period of southwest New Mexico. By his own deadpan account, he was "obliged to kill eight men" in Grant County alone -- not counting four other outlaws he personally dropped from the scaffold. Disinclined by nature to back down from anyone, Tucker was involved in some one dozen shooting scrapes, was shot four times, and he arrested Russian Bill and Sandy King. Yet "Dangerous Dan Tucker" is more than a gunman's story. Author Bob Alexander skillfully weaves in Tucker's nervy confrontations with criminals, with the quirky, everyday details of an underpaid lawman living on the edge. Prodigiously researched and documented, Alexander presents a significant Western character heretofore lost to history. His Dan Tucker is no Hollywood hero, but he is extremely competent and supremely dangerous -- if you're an outlaw.

Complete story of Sheriff Pat Garrett, famous American lawma.......1996-11-09
Metz `s thoroughly researched and well written biography details the controversial life of one of the Old West's most interesting characters, Pat Garrett - the lawman who shot and killed Billy the Kid. The story takes Garrett from his Southern childhood, to his days as a buffalo hunter on the Texas frontier, thru his tenure as a federal lawman and Sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico. Metz addresses the mysterious death of Garrett . It was in that position that he became embroiled in the infamous Lincoln County War. The book also provides in-depth coverage of Henry McCarty - alias Billy the Kid. Thoroughly researched and entertainingly written, Metz's story of Pat Garrett will stand as the standard resource work on this noteworthy Old West character. James P. O'Connor - Nov. `9

Cowboy Justice won Westerners International Co-Founders Best Book Award and to great critical acclaim.
"Cowboy Justice is a nonfiction masterpiece that shows us a lawman who enforced the law because the Rule of Law was sacred to him. There was no sense of personal gain or selfish career building, nor was there a sense of power for power's sake. Gober deserves a place beside Earp, Masterson, Garrett and others who gained fame for their law enforcement. And yet, he almost stands alone when it comes to greatness tempered with courage and humility." ---Michael Martin Murphey
