Customer Reviews:
Fantastic, practical book.......2007-07-03
This book is great - it is broken down into logical sections, all with incredibly practical advice. The interviews with professionals at the rear are particularly helpful, as are the case studies. The case studies are a wee bit outdated now in terms of style, but the information is still relevant. Its great that the book establishes the need to do market research, as this is an area often overlooked.
Note that this is not a glossy coffee table book - most of the pics are black and white and it is definitely a resource book for learning the basics.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in hospitality design.
A Must Read.......2001-05-16
With 27 years of restaurant experience I know the importance of design to the success of a restaurant. What is often overlooked, however, is that the kitchen and dining spaces have to work together. The authors of Successful Restaurant Design are the first to point out the importance of a holistic approach to restaurant design. Their insights into the design process are a must read for anyone planning a new restaurant or renovating an existing facility. The chapter of interviews offers readers design tips from leading designers and restaurateurs. And the case studies offer a straighforward way of understanding simple solutions to complex issues. This book belongs in the library of every restaurateur and designer interested in keeping up with front and back of the house design.

Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist is a sort of autobiography of Chuck Jones, the brilliant Warner Brothers animator who created such enduring characters as Wile E. Coyote and Marvin the Martian. Like his best cartoons, Jones skips around to the fun parts, giving a bit of childhood here, a few words of drawing advice there, and a good yarn wherever one fits. Jones also manages to work in a detailed yet somehow never boring description of the long and silly process of making a cartoon. Jones is refreshingly generous about spreading credit around to others. He fondly remembers art teachers, tips his hat to fellow directors and mentors Friz Freleng and Tex Avery, and gives the reader a new appreciation of the layout men who create the backgrounds for animated features. Most engaging are Jones's accounts of office life at Warner Brothers, which sounds like just as much fun as you hope it would be. Jones recounts stories of drawing tables wired to wake up sleeping animators when the boss approached and Cal Howard, a gag writer who ran an illegal commissary out of his metal-lined desk. The book is filled with sketches and color plates of much-loved moments from Warner Brothers cartoons and even includes a quick Road Runner and Coyote scene that comes to life when the pages are flipped. Highly recommended for kids who like to draw and adults who have not lost their appreciation for Looney Toons. --Ali Davis
Book Description
The illustrated classic, complete with a new preface by Matt Groening.
Winner of three Academy Awards and numerous other prizes for his animated films, Chuck Jones is the director of scores of famous Warner Bros. cartoons and the creator of such memorable characters as the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Pepé Le Pew, and Marvin Martian. In this beguiling memoir, Chuck Jones evokes the golden years of life at "Termite Terrace," the Warner Bros. studio in which he and his now-famous fellow animators conceived the cartoons that delighted millions of moviegoers throughout the world and entertain new generations of fans on television. Not a mere history, Chuck Amuck captures the antic spirit that created classic cartoons-such as Duck Dodgers in the 241/2 Century, One Froggy Evening, Duck Amuck, and What's Opera, Doc?-with some of the wittiest insights into the art of comedy since Mark Twain.

and so, having re- re-disposed of the monster.......2007-01-12
tremendous text for classic bugs bunny enthusiasts. brings a new found appreciation for the masterminds behind the character development and the environment they "grew up" in.
Fantastic...A MUST for ALL Looney Tunes and Chuck Fans!.......2002-10-05
Simply put, this is the best book ever written about Looney Tunes, and what it took to make them. Chuck shares entertaining behind the scenes info about the Termite Terrace and the people who worked there. Chuck say's that it was quite normal to see the animators look like they were going to wack each other with a mallet. Chuck also tells stories about those notorious poducers, Leon Schlesinger (whos lisp was used in Daffy voice) and Eddie Selzer. When Eddie said "I don't want any gags about bullfights, bullfights aren't funny!", Jones and Mike Maltise had something. Result: Bully For Bugs. When he said the same thing about camels to director Fritz Freleng, the result: Sahara Hare. Though Eddie is quoted as saying about Pepe Le Pew, "Nobody'd laugh at that s**t!", he happily accepted the Oscar for "For Scent-imental Reasons", a Pepe Le Pew cartoon. That (and many more) hilarous titbits are spread throughout this superb book, including high-quality backgrounds and scenes for "Duck Dodgers in the 24th and 1/2 Century" and many others. Also included are many drawings and many photos of the directors, animators and producers. The most illistruated and well thought out book about cartoons ever made.
As Wile E. Coyote would say "Genius, pure genius".......2002-06-19
The world lost an animation genius recently with the death of Chuck Jones. Luckily, there is a book like this that celebrates the animation genius he was. Arguably, Jones was the father of some of the best Warner Brothers cartoons ever made, including "Duck Amuck," "Duck Dogers in the 24th and 1/2 Century," and my personal favorite "What's Opera Doc?" He also is responsible for giving us such great pieces of pop culture as the original "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
Part autobiography, part instruction, part tribute, this book shows us the man behind the screen, or should I say behind the pencil? We often wonder where a genius comes from - Chuck seems to say from anywhere. His mark on the development of the cartoon is undeniable, and monumental. But just as you cannot appreciate art fully until you know about the painter, so it is with Chuck's cartoons. I have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into developing these 8 minute masterpieces. Yes, it's true that Jones gave us some of the clunkers in the 60's as the Warner Brothers studio (and the MGM studio) animation division gasped what seemed to be its last breath. But it's all the more amazing that Chuck could produce such works given what little he had to work with. The world would be poorer were it not for the gives Chuck has given us, including Wile E. Coyote (super genius!),and the Road Runner, Pepe Le Pew, Marvin the Martian and many others. His style was distinctive, his contributions monumental and behind it all, he was a fascinating and talented man. This book stands as a tribute to this genius now that he's no longer with us.
A Joy to Read.......2002-05-30
Rather than an autobiography, this book is more a collection of musing from one of America's greatest storytellers (he just happened to tell his stories with pictures shown in rapid succession!) From his love of Mark Twain to his contempt at studio management, we see not how his life unfolded, but rather how Mr. Jones created his vision. Though there is no drawing instruction, I have to agree with the plethora of lists that this should be on the shelves of every animator, professional or aspiring, as it illuminates what goes into a great cartoon before penicl ever touches paper.
The Life and Times of Charles M. Jones.......2000-09-05
Chuck Jones is one of the best known people in the animation business. He's been in the animation business for over 65 of his 88 years(as I write this review, he'll be 88 on the 12th of this month!).
This book lists all of the cartoons he's been involved with (Warner Bros, MGM, Dr. Suess specials, and many others). Also, he talks about growing up, how real life inspired his cartoons, what it was like working in Warner Bros studio, pays tribute to partners Tex Avery, Friz Freleng, Mike Malthese, and Abe Levitow, and talks about other projects he's done (like his How to Draw From the Fun Side of Your Brain). And as the other reviewers have pointed out, there's an animated cartoon of the Roadrunner and the Coyote on the pages of this book.
Since this book was originally published, he's produced one video in the 1990's (Chariots of Fur) and the historical and whimsical book Daffy for President (available through the US Postal Service).

Customer Reviews:
Good inspirational book.......2005-10-26
The photos in this book are stunning. For a person who loves to travel and take scening photos -like I do- will find this book inspirational.
Text is clear, no small fonts as in many other photo books and photos really stand out, however don't expect full discussions and step by step instructions on how to get the same results as the author.
Nothing out of the ordinary.......2004-06-13
A pleasant enough book with pleasant enough images, but nothing out of the ordinary. The content of this book is no different than many other general photography books out there. This is certainly not a 5-star book, as the ratings below would suggest.
Your best lens is often your feet.......2003-02-24
Kerry Drager covers a range of topics, that include lenses, lighting, Depth of Field, and composition, to name a few.
Throughout each topic he dispenses practical advice such as remembering to bring a snack or a plastic tarp and padding to protect your clothing and save your knees.
Written in a clear, simple, yet engaging manner, this book covers a broad range of material for scenic photography enthusiasts.
Well illustrated, this book provides ample examples to have the reader clamoring to run out with their camera and put some good advice to immediate use.
A Wonderful Book!!.......2002-06-04
I really liked the fresh approach that Mr. Drager uses in this book. I'm a amateur photographer and it really helped me see beauty in areas often overlooked. If the picture's alone Mr. Drager displays aren't enough inspiration to get out and take beautiful picture's, I don't what else would work!! The book is very informative and his way of explaining techniques is very easy to follow. If you want a delightful, well written, illustrated book on this subject....then this is the one to buy!!
A Photo book for almost anyone!.......2002-02-14
Many photo books focus on the photography enthusiasts but Kerry Drager manages to create a book that will appeal to any photography enthusaists but almost everyone else. Why? Almost everyone travels or like to travel and we all take snapshots. This book will help you elevate your snapshots into treasured moments with clear concise writing, illustrated ideas and concepts and inspirational photos.

Book Description
It's a jungle out there, so . . . bring on Bo Nanas, a three-foot-tall talking monkey, who swings through the exasperations of life with wit and a gentle perspective. Tackling whatever life throws him-be it strange jobs, weird relationships, or even genetically engineered bananas-our hero maintains a wry sense of humor. As Bo handles everything from annoying cell phone users to teething babies, readers are sure to see a bit of their own lives in this boldly drawn, prize-winning comic strip.
Who, for example, hasn't tried to do an act of kindness only to have it blow up in their face? Bo spies a sad little puppy tied up in a yard and decides to treat him to a day of movies and amusement parks only to find himself in the back of a police car for his troubles. Work can also be a challenge. When Bo takes an office job he finds himself to be the only available male in the building and thus the center of attention for a bevy of single female coworkers, sizing him up to see if he'll "take to domestication."
After winning the FineToon Fellowship in 2002, Bo Nanas began syndication in May 2003 through the Washington Writers Group. It appears in about 20 newspapers as well as online at MyComicsPage.com and comics.com.

Dear World: prepare for monkey..........2006-03-17
Having known John (the author) for most of my life, I am so pleased to see his maiden voyage off to a flying (well, actually more like a climbing) start. I like Bo, and love that people in the strip refer to him as "Mr. Nanas". I laughed out loud to see John's caricatures of himself in a couple of the panels. Most of all, I like that Bo makes me chuckle. That is, after all, the POINT of the funnies. I am looking forward to book two, and hoping that the Monkey will indeed, continue to meet the World, one city newspaper at a time.
The Most Fun You Might Have with a Monkey!.......2005-10-21
What a wildly clever lot of cartoons about Mr. Nanas! Kovaleski's unique style easily adds to the humor and multi-panel stories. Too much fun for such a great value! Looking forward to Volume 2!

Book Description
Danger, romance, adventure, exotic places, miracles. A thrilling Christian biography of a Cambodian man whose idyllic childhood in a Cambodian jungle village was shattered by the Khmer Rouge takeover in 1975. Physa survived the killing fields, was forced to serve as a communist soldier, escaped over landmine-infested borders, experienced young love in a refugee camp, took the identity of a dead man, faced the bewilderments of American culture, and came to life-transforming faith in Jesus Christ, who revealed his love to Physa in miracle after miracle.
Includes maps, bibliography, illustrations, and black/white photos taken in Cambodia, Thailand, and U.S.A.
Customer Reviews:
No More Fear.......2001-03-12
This book is one that will continue to be my favorite. It is filled with wonderful imagery and a sense of being a part of the story. Personally, I have become closer to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after reading Pastor Physa's book. I recommend this book to all non-believers and believers. This book is a wonderful depiction of God's sovereign mercy and grace. Thank you Pastor Physa for sharing your life. May God bless you with everlasting joy.
You won't be able to put this one down!.......1999-12-31
"No More Fear" offers a first-hand account of what happened early in Cambodia during Pol Pot's murderous regime. Physa's story is so gripping that I found it impossible to put the book down. The author does a good job of conveying the message of hope, faith and trust in God in this book.
This book is educational, inspirational, and a good story!.......1999-10-26
This book was interesting, inspiring and at times horrifying! I was given a peek into the quiet almost bucolic lifestyle of a small village in Laos. Village customs, religious practices, childhood antics were all related in a simple and smooth style. Then the reader experiences the abrupt destruction of this life when the Khmer Forces forced them from their village and farms, separating children from their families, killing, putting people to hard labor. The brutality of this time is described without hype or sensationalism; instead allowing the power of those events to stand starkly in the reader's mind. But the last portion of the book brings yet another strand; the element of hope. As Physsa relates his struggles as a refugee, the reader cannot help but see the work of God in this young man's life. It is a remarkable story about a remarkable person. But mostly it is a story of hope and redemption.
