Customer Reviews:
I'm an Idiot for buying this book.......2007-06-29
Did not tell me what I needed to know to pick plants for my yard. I found most of what I needed in Sunset's Western Garden Book (I'm in the western US).
The Complete Idiots Guide to Landscaping .......2007-01-04
This book is very informative and gives alot of ideas and information on how to landscape smaller areas.
Idiot's Guide to Landscaping Illustrated.......2006-06-27
This book is not at all what was expected for the price - all the pictures are black and white except for a very few color pages in the very center, which makes it almost impossible to help the reader identify plants, trees, shrubs, etc. All the black & white pictures blend so trying to distinguish what the publisher wanted the reader to focus on is extremely difficult. Might as well publish the book with only words and brief hand drawn illustrations. The reader still remains an "idiot" needing a guide to landscaping.
An excellent Guide!.......2003-11-14
Landscaping is a science as well as an art, but it doesn't mean you have to leave everything to the pros. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Landscaping" by Joel M. Lerner gives you the essentials so that even if you decide to let professional landscapers dig up, rearrange, and decorate your yard, you can make sure they do exactly what you envisioned. With Lerner's tips and detailed information, you can get a handle on the science and art of your own personal outdoors.
What I appreciate most about Lerner's Guide to Landscaping is the abundance of photos, sketches, and graphics. The layman's language text is well illustrated, leaving very little room for confusion or misinterpretation. And I especially enjoy the headings word play, like "The Plat Thickens," "Rocks Rule!" "Turf's Up!" and "Bean There, Vine That."
Aside from the photos that graphically explain the text, the sidebars and tipboxes are strategically located to answer questions you may have about the topic. For example, the "Green Thumb Guides" offer fundamental information and details spiked with Lerner's personal preferences and suggestions. The "Poison Ivy" box gives warnings and expert cautions about things that are often overlooked or taken for granted. The "Roots and Stems" sidebar includes definitions and explanations of technical landscaping terms. There are also tipboxes on "Planting Ideas" and "Suggested Tools." And most important, at the end of each chapter is a "The Least You Need to Know" section - in-a-nutshell bullet-lists of basics for beginners and reminders for experts.
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Landscaping" appeals to the amateur landscaper because it breaks down complex concepts into simplified schemes. I've always struggled with where to start in planning a decent garden. Lerner organized the whole process into chunks of manageable tasks, and through his book, I now know that I should enlist Mother Nature, study the terrain, and draw my dream garden in detail.
"The constructed environment makes half the aesthetic impact," Lerner said. "The rest happens with the plants and the change of seasons. This book is written to make sure your plantings meet the basic principles of design, offer 12-month interest, appeal to the senses, provide shade, give shelter, attract wildlife, and discourage unwanted visitors, among the numerous other valuable attributes plants provide."
Lerner's book will help you understand the basic principles of landscaping, spark your creativity with its countless site plans and layout ideas, and equip you with the know-how to create a stunning garden and an outdoor home you can be proud of all year round. - Ruby Bayan (www.OurSimpleJoys.com)
Leaving No Stone Unturned.......2003-10-02
Life is a garden, and it is clear that Lerner digs it. His book has turned me from an all thumbs gardener into a green thumb, confident landscape designer. I wish I could display before and after pictures of my property. Thanks Mr. Lerner for the best tutorial I have found on the topic of landscape design.
Book Description
While he was still in his twenties, Horace Tapscott gave up a successful career in Lionel Hampton's band and returned to his home in Los Angeles to found the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, a community arts group that focused on providing affordable, community-oriented jazz and jazz training. Over the course of almost forty years, the Arkestra, together with the related Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA) Foundation, were at the forefront of the vital community-based arts movements in black Los Angeles. Some three hundred artists--musicians, vocalists, poets, playwrights, painters, sculptors, and graphic artists--passed through these organizations, many ultimately remaining within the community and others moving on to achieve international fame. Based primarily on one hundred in-depth interviews with current and former participants, The Dark Tree is the first history of the important and largely overlooked community arts movement of African American Los Angeles. Brought to life by the passionate voices of the men and women who worked to make the arts integral to everyday community life, this engrossing book completes the account began in the highly acclaimed Central Avenue Sounds, which documented the secular music history of the first half of the twentieth century and which the San Francisco Examiner called "one of the best jazz books ever compiled."

Book Description
The seventies had album covers, the nineties had 'zines. Today, the coolest graphic design is underfoot, on the decks of skateboards around the country. As books like Thrasher and the recent indie cult hit film Dogtown and Z-Boys prove, skateboarding is one of the most popular extreme sports today. And as its popularity has grown, so has interest in the actual graphics on the boards themselves-the different designs are coveted by boarders, covered by magazines, and serve as one of the most creative vehicles for graphic designers today.
Boards is the first book to focus on the unique art of skateboard design, featuring hundreds of color photos covering the work of today's hottest board designers, including Birdhouse (Tony Hawk's company), Girl (Spike Jonze's company), Chocolate, Zoo York, Enjoi, and 5Boro. As most boards are produced in limited runs and distributed locally, even the most die-hard boarders will have only seen a fraction of the decks included here. In addition to Q&A's with the designers, Boards features action shots of some of today's hottest boarders, making it a must-have for every fan.
Customer Reviews:
Decked Out.......2007-03-08
Good coverage of the art of skateboard decks with most of the major designers included. Excellent interviews with the designers themselves and their approach to their work.Recommended reading to any collector of this art form.
bogus.......2006-06-25
are you kidding? MTV put out a book on skate art? don't even read any further, don't even think of getting this piece of junk. Look further and you will find something better for sure.
Not worth it.......2006-03-09
Anything else on the subject is far better. This is a poor slap-together that has no relevance to boards or board art. Looks like some first year asian art student's last minute hodge-podge before semester end. If you want the best, buy Sean Cliver's book "Disposable" instead.
Art of the skateboard.......2005-12-13
While I normally am pretty anti-MTV in terms of skateboarding (as MTV is the most mainstream of all mainstream), this book does an okay job of displaying the art of skateboarding in a cool and innovative way. Sure it may not be the most comprehensive of ALL books EVERYWHERE in terms of skateboarding, skate history, etc. But it does a good job at showing what it's got. The shots and art in this book are beautiful. I've always been a fan of aesthetics, "eye candy" you know? Which is one of the reasons I think our skateboard shop online does so well (
www.myboardshop.com ), the gear and clothing we sell is pleasing to the eye. If you like the clothing we sell, you'll probably like this book. I recommend it for the price; can't go wrong.
Non-Skater's View of Skateboard Art.......2004-10-28
I bought this book not because I am a huge fan of skateboarding but because I find the art interesting. This is defintely a good overview of skateboard art. The book includes a large number of skateboard designs, including a number of series by notable companies like Zoo York and Birdhouse. Even curious non-skateboarders will enjoy just paging through. The book authors also worked very hard on the graphic design; the pages have a sleek, embellished look that adds to the book's style but does not detract from the featured artwork. A few comments from a select few skateboard artists are also included, but they add little to the book; the book's strength is definitely in its artwork.
Overall, the book is a good introduction to skateboard art. However, I did notice that some skateboard companies (Zoo York, for example) were featured much more prominently than others, and it seemed as though some companies' artwork were missing. While this is a good book for casual fans, it may disappoint some skateboard enthusiasts a little.

"My wink is binding," Bernie Brillstein writes in the middle part of his memoir of a career in showbiz. At this point the movie-star manager has already admitted that he wanted power and prestige as soon as he started in the William Morris agency mailroom. And that he chased after a Don Corleone-ish kind of respect afterward. But even when he became a clout-carrying manager and near-mogul he kept his people-first credo. You suspect he loves it too for the way it echoes the Borscht Belt, since that's the kind of verbal energy he draws on throughout this anecdote-crammed autobiography. He calls himself "show," but in four decades he had to be "business" too, tough enough to tell clients, as he says he did, when to start their career over from scratch. The book begins with a graphically honest memory of his visit to the proctologist with his family when he was 24--something he guffaws off, but it's probably not far from the sort of reality check he regularly gave clients like Jim Henson, Norm Crosby, Lorne Michaels, John Belushi, and Brad Pitt. He cops to a gambling addiction, a love of "high class call girls," and to the way he stole from Laugh-Into invent Hee Haw. But he also brokered Lorne Michael's big break with SNL, produced Dangerous Liaisons, and eventually got News Radio and The Sopranos on the air. He candidly assesses professional pains too, including Michael Ovitz's pathology, Garry Shandling's riddling neuroses, and the loss of Belushi and Henson. "I care," he writes finally, "because that's who I am." It's easy to smile at that, but by the end of the book it's also easy to believe he means it. --Lyall Bush

He teaches the art of the deal, show business ethics, and reveals behind-the-scenes stories with his humour and savvy.
Customer Reviews:
REALLY JUST A SALESMAN, AFTER ALL THE FUSS!!.......2001-03-28
Because we're so star-struck in America, we tend to be overly impressed with ShowBiz and the people who inhabit that world. But as charming, determined and persistent a personality Mr. Brillstein may be, he's essentially just a salesman - NOT the creator, but a "dealmaker" of the ShowBiz Old School - and after almost 400 pages, I found he'd worn thin his welcome! However dramatic it may have been FOR HIM to accompany John Belushi's body back East, or "duke it out" with the Big Boys in corporate takeovers while at Lorimar, the emotions are thinly drawn and shallow in this book. Brillstein made me less than intrigued with his machinations, unimpressed by his self-aggrandizing spin on events and ultimately unsympathetic to his life challenges. (His obvious misogyny doesn't help, either - he has no use for women outside of the sack, it appears.) Here's another absurdly fortunate, rich powerful older man feeling sorry for himself because time changes everything? I'd have hoped he'd have learned to adjust better to the slings and arrows of life by the time he got to his 60s and 70s!
This book was distressing to me because I REALLY WANTED to LIKE the guy - but I found I couldn't. He's kinda ordinary, and once you remove the "famous" names and large amounts of money, his anecdotes are kinda ordinary! He's not terribly brilliant, sage or extraordinary in any other way than being sublimely LUCKY! I gave the book 3 stars, because it's certainly not dreck, but for inspiration or insight, I'd advise looking elsewhere!
Brillstein is as a big a star as those he represents.......2001-03-07
I'm not sure what drove me to buy the Brillstein book. I had heard of him of years, but wasn't sure that a managers tale was all that interesting. Oh, but is! This book is filled with humor, honesty, and and ego. Bernie seems like a terrific guy and he tells fantastic stories. Some are filled with love: Belushi, Radner, etc. Others venom (and these are the most fun, he pulls no punches): Ovitz, Shandling (more would have better on this), etc. You learn about the inside story of Hee Haw, The Muppets, SNL, and Lorimar. My favorite stuff was about Jim Henson, rarely have I seen so much great stuff written about one of my heroes.
While this may not be a roast, I raise my glass to Big Bernie and the wonderful life he has led. Thanks for sharing.
Unexpectedly Touching.......2000-12-04
I found myself unexpectedly touched by this autobiography. Having read it, I consider Bernie Brillstein a friend. With no self-praise, Brillstein shows himself to be a man of decency, of compassion, of empathy. He began in his profession as an agent at William Morris, dreaming of representing mid-Century comics such as Jackie Gleason and Jackie Gale. When he left William Morris, he became a personal manager, starting the careers of dozens of entertainers who have become household names. The stories Bernie has to tell! He survived--there's no other word--until the end of the century, representing Jim Henson, Lorne Michaels, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd and, as the saying goes, a cast of thousands along the way. He created HEE HAW and greenlighted THE SOPRANOS, headed a movie studio for a short time, got fired, picked himself up and started again. His very life has been the personification of the entertainment business; there are few who exceeded his success. And he is the one having the last laugh: He's still here! But along with the chronological report of his professional experience, what he was thinking, how he pulled it off, there is this man, this basically sweet and decent man, and that's what shines through his book. I enjoyed reading about Bernie's fascinating life.
Passably interesting but..........2000-10-29
A passably interesting look into life of an "old school" agent/manager with some real insights into his client's lives and the behind-the-scenes machinations of Hollywood. WARNING: You'll have to wade through a considerable amount of self-aggrandizment that I found tremendously off-putting toward the end. It's a rare occasion when I don't finish a book but I found myself skipping through the last third and ultimately bailed out with just a few chapters to go.
Readable, but not essential reading........2000-09-07
There's really no good insider showbiz tips or amazing gossip here. I found the book to be readable -- meaning I kept on reading once I picked it up but at any time I could have stopped and not felt like I was going to be missing a golden nugget.
It's a show biz biography of a manager. Did we really expect it to be an essential read?

Book Description
Hieronymus Zoo has fled civilization to live on his own private island, away from the stress, pain, and drama that come from associating with other people. His idyllic lifestyle is shattered, however, by the nightmares that plague his sleep, and a horrifying monster that rises threateningly from the sea. But is the monster real, or just another creation of his mind? And what will Hieronymus do when a very real woman ends up on the island with him? It could end in tears, or maybe in love... or maybe the end of everything they know.
Customer Reviews:
"The memories we select to share are what we use to let other people in".......2006-10-22
This story examines a man (but it could just as easily have been a woman) who constructs a controlled environment for his world. His name is Hieronymus. He literally moves to an island "with his fish and a dog and as many books as he could fit in the walls," an island with no other people. "A person could live decently with only books," he reasons to himself.
When Hieronymus approached the edge of his world on the beach, an obscured and hard to describe "Thing" would consistently "arrive in a shriek of pain, linger for a handful of moments . . . then sink away," terrifying him regularly. The narrator asks, if The Thing only visits the man when he sleeps on the edge of his domain, and never when he sleeps in his bed in his home, why does he continue to sleep on the beach? Because it "brought him his greatest terror" and "his greatest peace." This book is about the struggle to overcome internal reasoning that leads to avoiding socialization.
Hieronymus takes great pains to avoid interacting with other humans. He has all his supplies delivered to the far side of the island while he is asleep at night. One day his ordered crate of books arrives with something extra . . . And that is where the plot summary portion of this review ends, because it is a clever plot, and I don't care to spoil it for readers.
This book is funny and smart. I laughed repeatedly, especially reading the Zen parable of Enyadatta. I enjoy stories of people overcoming personal hardships, and I like metaphors of slaying giants, but there was too little insight and wisdom into Hieronymus' final catharsis. It was a little too much, "just face it, beat it up, and keep on trying hard for one more day." Ironically, those ideas can be counter productive or insufficient to help many people who deal with these types of disabling social issues. While I learned things along the way and I recommend the book, I wanted more innovative & practical ideas and less cheerleading in the end.
A close friend of mine asked me, "What is the book you were reading about?" I didn't want to be insensitive or miss the point of her question, so I didn't say, "It's probably about more things than I understand." Instead I paused to think up a considerate answer, "It's about a person who has lost connection." "Why did they do that?" she asked. Again, the book is very good and there are probably many answers to that question. But I sensed she wanted a brief answer, and not a long discussion about the many possible answers, so I chose, "Probably because they never were taught how to connect."
"Does he ever connect?" she asked. This question was more than I could answer simply, so I finally yielded softly, "You would have to read the book to find out that answer." I didn't want to ruin the book for her, and to me, the answer is not clear for the following reasons: I tend to judge "coming of age" and "romance" stories not by whether or not the author tells us in the end either "he became more wise and mature" or "they found a love that was true and would last." Instead, in a coming of age story, I look to see how many really good ideas the protagonist learns. And in a romance, I look to see if the characters' interactions make their chemistry apparent and enduring.
In this book, the author tells us in the end that genuine change has occured, and a war has been won. But I'm not convinced the ideas and the means discovered by Hieronymus support the dramatic end declarations. And for me, that keeps this very, very good novel from being better.
If you want a better Jamie S. Rich story, with more realism and less dependence on fable, symbolism, & metaphor, I recommend "12 Reasons Why I Love Her" - a book that I give 5 stars.

Book Description
In 1998, the State of Minnesota became immersed in one of the more controversial court trials of the era: The State of Minnesota vs Dennis Edward Courneya. Sudden Death, Overtime depicts the true account of Dennis Courneya and his journey from "Teacher/Coach of the Year" to "Prison Inmate, #198180".
Customer Reviews:
Once I started it, I couldn't put it down.......2001-12-14
'Sudden Death, Overtime' was one of the most inspirational books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It was colorfully written and so attaching that I read for hours just to realize I had finished the book in one sitting.
It not only depicts the life of Dennis Courneya, which is so intriguing and inspirational that it deserves its own story, but the book also incorporates a tragedy.
Anyone that read this book who knew of the TRUE 'Sudden Death, Overtime' and believed justice was served, and still believes that justice was served, has as horrible a moral character as some of the characters you will read about, but they also depict what is wrong in our society today. I challenge those who believed it to be a justice and have not read the book, to read the book, and walk away from it with a clean conscious.
I was not only honored to be among some of the first readers to read this book, but I was also thankful that I did. A must read!
Injustice in a small town!.......2001-11-30
My wife and I both just finished Sudden Death, Overtime. Despite quite a few typographical errors, it is the most compelling and best book I have read in years. Why? My bias may show, but 1. I am a teacher; 2. I know Dennis Courneya; 3. I lived in the town of Hancock for 3 years and could picture almost all the people he wrote about; and 4. my wife's father was the superintendent of schools in Hancock at the time Dennis was hired. I found this book to be straight forward (although, at times the trial transcripts were a bit confusing--the girls, like, really, like should like get rid of, like, too many "likes" in their vocabulary) and not an over glorification of the author. After reading the book I really felt like I was smacked in the face because, unfortunately, this could happen to any of us. I was appalled at the lack of action and concern by the teacher's union (yes, I am a member!), as well as the judge, the jury, and everyone else that was involved in this travesty. I also lost a lot of respect that I had for superintendent Larson and the school counselor, Carol Johnson. I applaud Dennis and his fortitude in surviving the trial, the prison, and everything else he has been subjected to. I'm not sure I would have survived it. I would LOVE to see this as a TV movie!
Unacceptable Justice.......2001-11-04
Sudden Death Overtime is a spellbinding, compelling book that illustrates what should be unacceptable behavior by those involved in the legal system, including citizens on the jury.
If "you" were Dennis Courneya, you would have expected far better by our judicial system. It is clear in the book that "intent" was never proved and that this man has been unjustly accused. The innocence and love with which he approached his teaching and coaching was rewarded with immature, youthful retaliation.
While this incident is focused on teachers as coaches, it would be recommended reading for anyone who manages people. We could all be unfairly accused and find ourselves thrown into the black hole of Lady Justice, with no way out.
Make a movie!.......2001-11-01
I just finished reading the best book I have read in a long time: Sudden Death, Overtime! It is poignant and straightforward. Does this town really exist? I have always believed that the justice system needs an "overhaul" - this book just makes me more adamant in my belief. Hurray for Coach Courneya... stand tall. This book is a wonderful tribute to home, family, and those who try to teach our youth - an awesome responsibility. I am humbled by what Courneya had to endure.
This is a must-read for everyone. Put it on your Christmas list.
An eye-opening experience.......2001-10-23
As a teacher in the United States, I was spellbound when reading this book. As a teacher, I cherish my students and would do anything for them, just like Dennis Courneya did all of his teaching career. I think teachers all over the United States should take the time to read this book. It goes to show how teachers, like Courneya, can have their devotion and love for their job and their students taken for granted in the blink of an eye. This is a true wake up call for all teachers and this book is a must read. I am appalled that this injustice has been allowed to go on in this nation. I hope Couneya finds peace in himself and his family. The girls that accused him of this should be ashamed of what they stand for. The town should be embarrassed of their morality. Read this book, you will be glad you did!!
