"Water represents money and signifies the flow of wealth. To activate this symbol of prosperity...." Lillian Too is the grande dame of writers on systematic Feng Shui. Hailing from Hong Kong, the Feng Shui capital of the world, Too is steeped in the theories and practices of this complex and arcane path of personal and life enhancement. In The Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui, Too reveals a wealth of methods and tools to facilitate the flow of good ch'i in your life. From the size of your furniture to the direction your oven faces, from the shape of surrounding mountains to the year you were born--all of these can affect your life. Through the use of plants, colors, crystals, and mirrors, Too shows how to situate the things in your life to make the most of every situation. It is also essential that one is able to personalize Feng Shui remedies, and to this end, Too includes charts for determining how each reader, depending on birth, age, and gender, fits into the order of things. The eye-popping illustrations make the foreign familiar and make the Complete Illustrated Guide an authority you'll be turning to again and again. --Wilifred Kim
Customer Reviews:
Very poor written Feng Fui Book.......2006-02-14
I bought this book with intention of trying to reposition by house after moving to new house in Torrence, L.A. This book does not provide good tip and very confusing points that may not practical for me. A disappointed book.
Superficial & Without Flow---.......2005-11-04
I have owned this book for a while and never could really get the jist of what where she was going with it. The most interesting parts of book are about the Bank Of China where they follow strong Feng Shui principles and how she became successful in positing her office. This is wonderful if you can move your doors to face your most auspicious positions and have
the clout to tell you CEO you would like to recontruct your office at his(her) expense. I have tried from other sources to position myself in the workspace and will say that my bosses thought I was insane. I think book is poorly written with too much useless information.
good book to pick up and read.......2003-02-21
i keep this one by my bed and read it when i need some inspiration. it always gives me ideas and gets my creative juices going. a good addition to your fung shui library.
Very Confusing.......2002-05-25
This book was very confusing. I have had to buy other books to understand the art of Feng Shui. Not interesting. I would not buy this book.
terrible book. Chinese calendar calculations wrong.......2000-11-09
The chinese calendar calculations are false. The book lacks depth and has too many contradictions.

Book Description
How a culture approaches and depicts death says a lot about the way it faces life. In America, death is a fixture of pop culture, shown in fantasies that are violent but curiously detached from reality and moral lessons. In Mexico, death occupies a much different cultural space. Muerte! explores the lurid history of Mexico's fascination with death, starting with pre-Columbian mythological depictions of death as part of a constant cycle, to the Colonial period's unhappy marriage of native views with Judeo-Christian fire and brimstone, to J. G. Posada's remarkable turn-of-the-century engravings of death that were popular images in newspapers of the time. The author has organized a compellingly dark array of paintings, engravings, and photographs from the grisly but popular tabloids Alarma! and Peligro! Essays by Diego Rivera and Mexican scholars offer insights on the Day of the Dead, Catholic ritual, and the current lust for sensational gore.
Customer Reviews:
Looking for a serious treatment of death in Mexican culture? Steer clear of this insulting mess of sensationalism!!!!!.......2007-05-22
Based on the information I read about this book, I thought it presented a serious scholarly treatment of how death is viewed in Mexican culture, a subject which I am interested in. However, I found this book to be completely sensationalist and without an ounce of any serious (forget about scholarly) consideration of the subject. It also perpetuates negative stereotypes Americans already have about Mexican culture and they way they view death. It's all about pictures the author discovered in some trashy magazine and nothing more! So what? What's worse is how the author exploits theses photos to further his career as an artist (and not a very good one, I might add). The writing is sloppy and self-absorbed and the author is so completely uninformed about this topic (is including Posada and Diego Rivera all the cred you need?)it is almost comical. It makes one wonder if the editors were themselves corpses!! What a shame and a complete disgrace to an aspect of Mexican history and culture that deserves serious and respectful consideration.
Ai dios mio!.......2006-11-14
The typos in this book drove me nuts, but if you can get past them (If I can, anyone can.) it's an entertaining--and stomach-churning--read. Not too deep, not too thorough, but rather a light overview of the subject. Great to have onhand if you don't have access to actual issues of Alarma! magazine. Which most people in North America probably do not. Gorehounds will not be disappointed. People looking for "cultural enrichment" probably will be.
AMAZING........2005-03-24
This is an amazing book. The images are grotesque and disturbing, yet, they make you wonder how and why something like that would happen, and what the situation was. One thing that bothered me, however, was the fact that under most images (especially the ones that striked my interest) it would say, "Unidentified incident". Being as curious as I am, I want to be able to read about each picture, but in MUERTE!, do not expect to get detailed explanations of every image.
Muerte! Death in Mexican Popular Culture.......2001-11-19
.This book is a harsh glimpse into reality in the form of graphic death scene photos and commentary on Mexican death tabloids such as Alarma! Someone said the title was misleading - I do not think so - it says exactly what it is, and has several bloody photos right on the cover. It is not a sugar-coated day-of-the-dead book, although the subject is covered - nor is it meant to be a complete commentary on Latin culture. It is a study of magazines that have been around for years and sell millions of copies each week. The publisher reports on this subject but seems to be blamed for the existence of these tabloids in some reviews I have read. No one seems to mind if Alarma! publishes death scene photos or if people put stickers of peeing kids on the back windows of their cars and say it's about Latino culture. As far as intellectual content is concerned, that is a matter of opinion. I f you are familiar with any of this publisher's other books, then you must know they do not publish shallow material. This is a serious study about a serious subject and it's exploitation and is not for the faint of heart. This book is about death in Mexican popular culture and it's exploitaion and is a subject few have chosen to discuss in detail. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the workings of Mexican death tabloids and death scenes in general.
A scholar of Mexican art says AVOID THIS BOOK.......2001-08-05
...it isn't just that the crime photos it republishes are problematic, but the book has NO INTELLECTUAL WEIGHT and in fact, uses the essays by Medina and Fox (commissioned for another publication, edited and republished without their consent) to "validate" the author's egocentric/gringocentric visions. The TITLE IS TOTALLY MISLEADING and the text offers no ideas that are worth remembering. The first book I ever wanted to really really trash.
Book Description
This third volume in John Freeman's outstanding photographic instruction series provides readers with authoritative advice on capturing the beauty of the physical world. Here intermediate photographers can find information on an exhaustive range of topics, including expert guidance on creating interesting foregrounds, modifying backgrounds, developing panoramas, framing, working with multiple images, and utilizing black and white as an alternative to color. Over 250 images offer perspective on capturing specific types of landscapes--from skies and deserts to waterways and urban landscapes. Find valuable advice on equipment: filters, lenses and film; technique: exposure, shutter usage; and editing: cropping and retouching. A section on digital toning even instructs readers on how to manipulate their work to create surreal imagery.
Customer Reviews:
Looking for Landscape Help........2006-03-07
This book is a good looking book about landscape photography. It's divided into three parts called "The Essentials", "The Subjects", and "Further Techniques".
The essentials chapter deals with equipment, exposure, depth of field and basic composition, among other things. The subjects include each of the seasons and then topics like rivers and canals, the weather and even the urban landscape (but no topics like mountains.) The further techniques include filters, close-ups and computer post-processing. The book is illustrated with many of the author's pictures.
The discussion does not go into much depth about either equipment, technique or vision. For example, the discussion of cameras says that single lens reflex cameras are the most versatile and that digital cameras let you preview the pictures, but not much more. The discussion of lenses tells you about the differences between lens focal lengths as far as angle of view but then tells an inadequate story about depth of field, and doesn't discuss the use of focal lengths to control perspective. When the author discusses deserts he tells you about the importance of shooting early, but tells you nothing about how to photograph the flora and fauna that live in the desert.
When I encounter a book like this, I often think that the author/photographer had a nice portfolio but couldn't find a way to put together the pictures to deal with a common theme so he or she decided that an instructional manual would sell better. But instructional books have to give instruction and this book falls down on the job.
If you want to read a book that covers the same ground but provides a lot of useful instruction (even though it doesn't deal with digital photography), read John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide". More advanced photographers may benefit from reading Brenda Tharp's "Creative Outdoor & Nature Photography." For those concerned about developing their landscape vision, read Niall Benvie's "Creative Landscape Photography" or for an interesting, off-beat approach, David Ward's "Landscape Within". Finally, if you really want a book of pictures disguising as an instructional manual, try Tom Mackies's "Landscape Photography Secrets"

The 1992 presidential election was a rich source of inspiration for Doonesbury's particular brand of satire. Dan Quayle did not like many of the strips collected here, especially Rick Redfern's evidence about Quayle's attempts to silence a potentially damaging witness. George Bush was also pretty peeved when Trudeau printed--verbatim--transcripts of presidential waffling. Sometimes a satirist can just sit back and watch a politician shoot him- or herself in the foot. Over and over again.
Meanwhile, Uncle Duke quits Club Scud and heads back to the U.S. to manage the presidential campaign of his rabid right-wing cousin David. Mike is unemployed and running out of self-esteem, B.D. suffers the aftereffects of Desert Storm, and Zonker returns to the bosom of his family. --Simon Leake
Customer Reviews:
Let's hear it for the Quayle/DEA strips!.......2001-08-26
Individually, the strips in this book are great - relationship issues with BD and Boopsie, George Bush (Sr)-isms, the charisma Clinton exuded during his first campaign, and the highly dubious concept of good ol' Zonker moving back in with his parents in California. However, the mix seems rather mish-mash, mostly thrown in due to era relation. While that's all fine and dandy, we as readers have come to expect a better arrangement from Mr Trudeau. On the whole, however, that would more or less be the only negative feature of the book. It should be noted that hardcore Doonesbury fans like myself and/or people who want to see what the controversy is all about *need* this book, as it contains the Dan Quayle DEA investigation that got the strip banned from all but a few papers in the US ... including the one run by Mr Quayle's family.

Recommended.......2004-09-16
I actually haven't seen this book, but I do have Lewis's Cook's Practical Handbook to Ice Cream, which is the (original) British version. The TOC and index look identical except for spellings (flavor vs. flavour, and so on). I'm guessing Iced Cool doesn't refer to double cream or caster sugar, but I can't say whether it includes the recipe for Gooseberry and Clotted Cream Ice Cream.
As ice cream books go, this one is more of a how-to guide than a recipe dump. Lewis spends many pages on equipment, ingredients and basic procedures. She's a particular aficionada for presentation, and each page is enhanced with about 3 or 4 photographs.
The 50 or so recipes mostly cover the basics. Still, there are some unusual recipes, such as Rhubarb Ginger Ice Cream and Dondurma Kaymalki (!). Lewis has a few interesting ideas: She likes to add cream late to avoid greasy/buttery texture. To the dismay of purists, she recommends corn starch when working with egg yolks. Her berry ice creams have no eggs or milk, and cream is only added after the puree has been churned for 10-15 minutes. Conveniently for those who lack an ice cream machine, she provides instruction for finishing every recipe by hand utilizing whipped cream.

Book Description
Eleven-year-old Chris is small for his age, so he can't believe it when he learns he's been selected for the exclusive all-star traveling hockey team. It's not all fun and games playing for the Arctic Wolves, however. Some of the kids on the opposition are much bigger and rougher, and they pick on Chris because of his size. But Chris isn't the only one getting razzed. His teammate, Derek, is an aggressive player who also happens to be the only African American in the league.Chris and Derek develop some powerful on-ice chemistry that makes them a winning combination. But will that be enough for them to prove that size and race don't matter?
