Book Description
"A richly illustrated, reasonably priced account of the burial sites of Egypt's greatest rulers."Houston Chronicle
Here is the definitive account of the Valley of the Kings, visited by millions of tourists and famous throughout the world as the burial place of the great New Kingdom pharaohs. Some eighty tombs were dug in the valley at the height of Egyptian power more than 3,000 years ago, their chambers stocked with incredible treasures and decorated with magnificent wall paintings. It was here, in 1922, that Howard Carter stumbled upon the virtually intact tomb of the boy-king, Tutankhamun. Recently the valley has made international headlines with the discovery of the burial chapels of Ramesses the Great's many sons; The Complete Valley of the Kings is the first book to publish an account of these remarkable findings. Reeves and Wilkinson, both acknowledged authorities on the valley, bring together the art, archaeology and history in one exciting account.

Hidden facts.......2005-11-20
Did you know that there are chambers in the bottom of many temples that are still 'uncharted"? Neither did I. This is a great book.
Review of Valley of the Kings.......2005-08-12
This is a truely comprehensive reference book of the Valley and like others in the Thames and Hudson series is a must for scholars of Ancient Egypt. Excellent!
excellent.......2004-02-11
Excellent book, if you are interest in ancient egypt, read this book, you'll learn a lot of interesting facts about the valley of the kings, the pharaohs, etc..
A True Complete Book on the Valley of the Kings.......2002-12-16
It is the best book on the Valley of the Kings. In it you can find not just information but a treasure, a treasure showing the magnificent treasures of ancient Egypt.
Almost completely perfect.......2002-02-28
The Complete Valley of the Kings is a very well-researched, well-written, well-illustrated, and well-organized book. Everything from the topographic and the geologic maps of the valley through the religious and archeological history of the valley were interesting (and sometimes depressing, considering what some of those early adventurers and so-called scholars did to the place). The information on the dismantling of the Valley at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st Dynasty was especially interesting. Of course, the stars of the book were the tombs themselves. The architecture, decoration and history of each tomb is given as fully as possible. My only reservation in regards to this book lies in the authors having made up their minds on the identity of the controversial mummy in KV55 and airily dismissing as unimportant any evidence that contradicts their theory. Such inflexible partiality calls for a cautious approach to any other "definite" conclusions the authors draw. Otherwise, the book is inarguably informative and entertaining, except for the fact that the authors consistently and annoyingly use the Greek forms of the pharaoh's names (such as the Greek Sethos instead of Seti). Other than that, the book really is almost completely perfect.

Book Description
Ever since anonymous spray-can art began appearing on city walls in New York and Philadelphia in the late 1960s, graffiti has been a ubiquitous presence in the urban landscape, its artists largely unsung heroes. As hip-hop culture spread from America, graffiti became a worldwide phenomenon, emerging in the 1980s as the symbolic artistic language of young people everywhere and one of the most potent influences on youth-oriented marketing and design. With more than 2,000 illustrations by over 150 artists from all over the world and interviews with many of them, this visually arresting book is the most comprehensive survey of graffiti art ever published.
Today's young graffiti artists incorporate a variety of mediums-including stickers, stencils, oils, acrylics, and oil-based chalk-as well as an ever-expanding range of social commentary. This evolution in style and subject matter has earned graffiti the respect of the art world and guaranteed its long-lasting influence on art, graphic design, and style around the world. Great fun for graffiti and pop-culture buffs, the book is also an essential reference work for anyone involved in the visual arts today. AUTHOR BIO: Nicholas Ganz (also known as Keinom, his pen name) is a graffiti artist who has traveled around the world to gather material for this book. He lives in Essen, Germany. Tristan Manco is a graphic artist and director of Bristol-based Tijuana Design. He is the author of Stencil Graffiti and Street Logos.

Great reference.......2007-08-06
I'm an art teacher, and I have this book in my room for ninth graders to look at during "down" time. It is so popular that I have had to repair it with book-binding tape after only two years. Many of the students just enjoy looking at the variety of impressive artwork, and some of them enjoy copying the styles of letters to create their own names or phrases. There are hundreds and hundreds of photos from around the world, showcasing a wide variety of styles. I find it hard to believe that someone could not be impressed with the artwork contained in this book.
Good Gift.......2007-07-14
I bought this book for my sister on her birthday and it's awesome... but some of the art in this book is not as spectacular as I thought it would be. The book is very enjoyable regardless.
Wonderfully Concise, Marvelous Photographs.......2007-06-22
I got just what I wanted from this book; a vivid depiction of some of the best works of graffiti in the entire world. I was certainly not disappointed. The art presented here ranges from simple, stark icons plastered in street signs to massive photorealistic portraits on the sides of enormous buildings, and everything in between.
A Great Pictorial Documentary of Street Art.......2007-06-01
Beautiful, glossy images, with many styles and influences...
ohhh.... but I like those slate grey concrete walls.......2007-04-05
To the previous reviewer:
Quote "It just goes to show how brainwashed everybody is into thinking this act of vandalism is an artform"
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, however the sad thing is that you are actually the one who is brainwashed. I guess it is not your fault that years of conditioning have created a closed mind that is unable to appreciate art in forms other than a nice little square canvas hanging on your living room wall.
Try to remove those blinkers once in a while you may be surprised.
peace
OK, as for the book itself.....
Pros: It covers a good spectrum of street art from many countries and is loaded with thousands of photos, making it a great coffee table book. When you open the book and flick through a few of the glossy pages the quality is obvious you really feel like you got your moneys worth.
Pretty good mix of moonlight pieces and the legal stuff.
Cons: The text is pretty minimal and offers only a brief intro to the artists, but I guess most people will be buying this book for the pictures anyway.
I also thought it could have included some larger format pictures considering the page size, pretty minor complaint tho.
Most people will find it a nice gentle intro in to the world of graf art, others a useful reference.
Book Description
Ever since hip-hop and punk music rose from the ashes of urban blight to become two of the most potent youth culture movements of the twentieth century, the world's streets have taken center stage as vibrant sites of creativity. And in less than a generation, thanks to ease of travel and the Internet, a new global street culture has emerged, bringing all of the world's diverse subcultures and modes of urban expression together: graffiti, skateboarding and bike messengering, DJing, offbeat fashion, gang life, music, as well as design, photography, and other more traditional visual art.
Street World: Urban Culture and Art from Five Continents is the first book to record the whole phenomenon. From New York and Los Angeles to the Brazilian mega-cities, South African townships, and Mumbai, authors Roger Gastman, Caleb Neelon, and Anthony Smyrski highlight cultural hotspots around the world. Divided into more than 50 topics and illustrated with more than 500 photographs, this book celebrates the street as a stage for the visual creativity of a generation.
Book Description
This book describes the major aesthetic image elementslight and color, space, time-motion, and soundand how they are used in television and film. Zettls comprehensive coverage of aesthetic theory and his inclusion of effective visuals and examples place this text in a class by itself.

"Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book."
I would disagree with the above review. Only by learning WHY first, can we learn HOW later. This book is more than a cookie cutter approach to film and video. If you want to "click and drag" your way through an editing program, then true, this book is not for you. Add this to your collection if you want a book that teaches how to see and create film. Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics has staying power.
Fundamental book on the theory of the moving image.......2001-05-20
This was the assigned textbook for my digital video 2 class, and it is simply wonderful. Zettl is a very knowledgable man on the subject of creating images for film, video, and even new media. (Zettl's text Video Basics 3 was used in my digital video 1 class as well) This book lays a solid foundation for the theory behind how and why the viewer perceives the moving image, and how the filmmaker and video producer can create more pleasing and coherent productions.
While the biggest complaint I've heard about this book is it's over-reliance on theory, it still does a good job of contextualizing theory into practical application. Thus the title of the book: APPLIED Media Aesthetics. Although I haven't read any of Eisentien's theories behind filmmaking, I suspect that Zettl's treatment would compete rather well, and is probably more accessible for a modern reader.
This book covers all the bases from color and light, time and space and structuring audio to image. Zettl succintcly deconstructs the intelligent mind behind the images and sound of our cultures film and television productions.
Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book.
The Filmmaker's Bible of Aesthetics or What Works and Why.......2000-11-04
This is probably the most important textbook a film production student can have on his/her shelf. NOT for how to work with actors or how to light a scene, but for understanding the underlying reasons of why things work due to our learned aesthetics and Western sensibilities.
Professor Herbert Zettl has written the most concise manual on why we has film viewers percieve things the way we do. He explains in detail (and layman's terms) how our aesthetics have been formed to interpret the dynamic medium of film and television.
How editing of action from shot to shot creates the illusion of continuous motion. How stagelines work so not to give the effect that your actor is jumping around from one side of the scene to the other. How to crop your shot BETWEEN the bodies natural cut-off points (i.e. neck, elbow, waist) to prevent the actor from looking like a disembodied head or torso.
This book is cover-to-cover insights into what we as viewers take for granted when we watch a good filmmaker's work, but may not consider when faced with the daunting task of mounting a film production and the on-set "reality" problems that dominate the filmmaker's mind when shooting a film.
I first read this book when I was in film school twenty years ago. Since then I have directed many professional film productions and I still review it before starting a new one to refresh myself.
Just as Syd Field's book "Screenplay" is the bible for screenwriting, "Sight Sound Motion" is the bible on understanding what works in film/video and why.
Book Description
One of the most popular and influential cartoonists of the last two decades returns with his stories of twentysomething cynic Buddy Bradley. In this volume, Bagge skewers the occupational frustrations of the Reagan/Bush '80s and the aimless, youthful energy of the early '90s, leading us in this book to the fussy ambivalence permeating the end of the millennium. Buddy Bites the Bullet is the final arc in the 15-year story of Buddy Bradley, collecting the final issues of Bagge's legendary comic book series Hate. Could it be that Buddy and his maniacal girlfriend Lisa finally decide to... grow up? Perhaps, but not before they verge toward an utterly hilarious disintegration with a little help from their friends. Buddy's best-friend Stinky, the one-time rock star turned drug manufacturer, takes center stage in the most riotous chapter that leads to a highly unexpected and deadly end.
Customer Reviews:
Sigh! So Buddy finally "grows up"............2002-09-10
These Buddy stories have been such a big "guilty pleasure" for me for so long now that I'm sorry to see them go. For, as the other reviewers have pointed out, this is set up to be the final, anticlimactic installment where Buddy leaves his third-rate, post-industrial, prolonged adolescence for third-rate, post-industrial, adulthood (or at least the superficial trappings of it).
Somehow, I don't think this will be the end of the Buddy Bradley story. Buddy mirrors too closely the fate of the typical "post industrial", working class kid. This won't be the end of his unhappy decline because things continue to get worse for the working class. Even though Buddy has "settled" for a mediocre existance he will not even be allowed to keep that. I rather expect that in a few years Mr. Bradley's business will fail and he will find himself trying to sell his labor as a middle age wage-slave competing against younger versions of himself for the same crummy jobs. Perhaps Bagge could call that story,_Buddy Bites the Big One_.....
Say Goodbye, Buddy.......2001-08-29
This collection of "HATE!" stories is billed as the last appearance of Buddy Bradley. I rather think we will see Buddy again someday because Bagge does not end his story as much as suspend it. Buddy finally stumbles into adult responsibility: he has his own fledgling business, Lisa is pregnant, and Buddy is down on his creaking knees proposing marriage. He has smartened up somewhat: however some of his buddies begin to pay some scary consequences for their feckless slackery. Once again I'm impressed by the combination of Bagge's precise, almost novelistic characterizations and his wild, hairy, hilarious cartooning. Stinky's sudden self-destruction is shocking, but if you re-read you will find that P.B. has carefully prepared for it; it's almost an archetypal case of personal decline and fall. He lavishes similar care on new characters like Nicole, the nurse who goes on two disastrous dates with Buddy (he thinks she's uptight, but you can sympathize with her desperate attempts to connect with this misanthrope.) George and Val make a cameo appearance that will blow the minds of long-time fans. And Lisa, Buddy's befuddled soul-mate, resurfaces in a highly altered state (Bagge lets his characters change and grow, just like so called real life.) "HATE!" was one of the funniest, most satisfying comics of the '90's. If you are a fan of Kevin Smith's movies, you should get all of Bagge's books immediately.

Customer Reviews:
Inspiring Curiosity.......2002-06-07
I immensely enjoyed reading "Such Silver Currents". It flows at just the right pace, and gathers interest, intrigue, and admiration in the reading. It inspires a curiosity about the era that made me turn frequently to a biographical dictionary for supplementary detail. The author makes her
personalities come alive; her story creates a vivid picture of the interplay of motivations of her subjects. Refreshed by reading about "behind the scenes" people instead of the "big names", I found an underlying theme of the validity of all of our lives, no matter how unknown, how forgotten in the broad sweeps of human history.
