Book Description

The yurt or ger is a low-impact structure that causes no permanent damage to the land on which it is pitched. It is easy to erect and can be taken down in an hour. It is cool in summer and, with a stove, warm in winter. For centuries, people throughout central Asia have made yurts their homes. Robust and versatile, the yurt has evolved into the ultimate portable dwelling.
Yurts are perfect for offices, summer houses, meditation spaces, spare rooms, or just beautifully satisfying spaces to be in! Join the thousands of North Americans who are discovering the many virtues of the yurt. Part 1 of the book delves into the history of the yurt and the principles behind its construction, and explores modern life in a Mongolian ger and the culture and etiquette of ger living.
Part 2 gives fully illustrated and detailed instructions on how to make several of the most popular types of yurt, including the "weekend yurt." With a few common wood-working tools, even an absolute beginner could build the frame for this simple, elegant structure.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for yurt/ger construction.......2006-11-03

One of the best books I've found with concise building instructions. It also gives the historical context and more period method of construction as well. Great book for a beginner, which I am.

5 out of 5 stars Gers and Yurts.......2005-07-28

This book is an invaluable source of information on the history, building and use of the portable felt structures called Gers. Well researched and clearly written, the book covers all the detailed procedures needed for building one of these structures including authentic plans for a variety of sizes. There is a good glossary of terms and many helpful suggestions for the sourcing of materials.

5 out of 5 stars Just good info.......2004-09-03

None of the chatter, just good info on how to build yurts and gers. Forget the other larger books. Simple and to the point. Most of the drawings are freehand and not cad, but nothing is lost in the process.

5 out of 5 stars Big things come in small packages.......2003-02-10

It's amazing how much information is in this rather small book. You could keep it in your pocket as you built your own functional yurt. The writing is to the point and very informative. I've checked out many books on building yurts and this is the best. High points of this book for me: clear patterns, listing of materials and tools needed, time estimates for building, vocabulary of yurt parts, basic history of the people who use yurts, their various regions, and yurt variations. Get this book if you really want to build a yurt and do it right.

5 out of 5 stars A do-it-yourself education in the art of yurt-building.......2002-08-11

The Complete Yurt Handbook by professional yurt builder Paul King is a solid history of the yurt, a simple dwelling used throughout central Asia for hundreds of years. It is also a "user friendly" how-to instruction book for building several different types of yurt. Exhaustively researched and steeped in Mongolian history and culture, The Complete Yurt Handbook illustrates its meticulous instructions with photographs and diagrams, presenting a thorough do-it-yourself education in the art of yurt-building. The Complete Yurt Handbook is a fascinating, unique, and highly recommended book presenting just about everything there is to know about the yurt.

Rather than a project-driven craft book, Collage Techniques is an exciting presentation of the medium as a fine art. From the famous practitioners (Matisse, Picasso, Hockney) to the many accomplished artists represented throughout the book, the images are stunning, sometimes startling. A thorough coverage of materials, supplies, and basic methods lays the groundwork of the first section; chapters then focus on various types of papers, fibers, photographs, and technologically enhanced imagery that can be incorporated. The second section explores design considerations for various subjects (still lifes, landscapes, human figures, social commentary, abstract imagery, three-dimensional works). There are no step-by-step objects here, but instead an amazing collection of work that utilizes collage by bringing together painting and sculpture and provides colorful, inventive, thought-provoking inspiration for experimenting with the medium.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good resourse for the beginning collage artist.......2007-03-03

Brommer approaches collage from an fine art point of view. Most other books I have looked at tend more toward the scrapbook and/or kitchy altered art genre. He has an excellent section on art paper preparations and basic design.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource.......2006-11-10

Brommer's text is perfect for anyone interested in exploring collage as a fine art. He gives some history, hence context, for the work of collage. There are plenty of different techniques offered for exploration by the reader with lots of detail and materials lists. These are not "specific" projects, but rather show a project using the methods described and leave open-ended your own creation. The art of collage is also placed in current context when contemporary applications are examined in the end of the book. I rate this for anyone interested in collage as an art form. This is not a "craft" book, but rather almost an art course in collage in a book.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book of techniques .......2006-08-01

As a collage artist, I own many books on collage techniques. This one is especially nice because is presents many established artists and their techniques vs. one artist showing all his or her own work. The materials lists and photos of a work-in-progress are also excellent. This is not a craft book, but for those serious about art making.

5 out of 5 stars Collage /Mixed Media book for arists.......2006-07-10

This gave a great range of techniques and effects for both collage and mixed media. Oddly enough this is the best sourse of mixed media approaches that I have yet seen in any book currently in print. The techniques are clearly and comprehensively explained and the illustrations are perfect. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars This one was juuuust right.........2006-03-10

Being new to the area of collage, I have been searching out interesting and inpirational books from which to 'get the motor reving' so-to-speak. I've felt like Goldilocks in the Bear's house looking at some of the available materials. "This one is too short, this one is too weird, this one is too singular, this one has no background or wisdom to offer..." But, ah! this one, Collage Techniques, is just right. I found the educational and historical perspectives to be useful and interesting to read, as well as the lessons and explainations. The author uses many good examples that come from a variety of sources, so it is possible to look through and say, "Yes, that's the skill or portrayal that I'm looking for." Collage Techniques doesn't get dry or repetative, nor does it foist a single technique upon the reader. It is an older book, but in-my-opinion, a more comprehensive one than many of the newer collage books. I recommend it very highly.

Book Description

Stranger Passing is a fresh view of contemporary society that accompanies a major new exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. With an essay by celebrated novelist and humour writer Ian Frazier and another by Douglas R. Nickel, of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Stranger Passing is an in-depth look at the art of Joel Sternfeld.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Book Of Photographs By An American Master........2005-03-16

"American Prospects," a landmark study of how the modern social order is revealed through landscape, published in 1988, brought brilliant photographer Joel Sternfeld to international attention. Sternfeld expanded this study with "A Stranger Passing." The sixty color portraits of ordinary Americans included in this book, and made over a fifteen year period, were first shown at The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2001, and published at the same time.

Although Douglas R. Nickel describes this book as a collection of portraits in his introductory essay, Joel Sternfeld's vivid images are so much more than traditional photographic portraiture. The pictures go beyond reflecting a mere image of the subject, no matter how interesting or aesthetic. And Sternfeld's subjects are more than the people being photographed. He has captured here the very essence of our culture - Americans, depicted in the context of their daily lives, during odd moments between events. Many of the warmest images feature relationships between two people.

Each photograph tell a story. The volume's cover portrait is titled "Young Man Gathering Shopping Carts." A teenager, with blond bobbed hair, open shirt, loosened tie, stands in a parking lot cluttered with pink shopping carts. The ubiquitous strip mall is the backdrop. His stance, the look of discontent on his face, and the generic locale say much more than most narratives. Sternfeld stirs the viewers imagination. One cannot help but wonder about the subjects' lives - the before and after of each picture. "A Lawyer with Laundry," New York, portrays a seemingly reluctant subject, laundry in hand, leaning against a newsstand while warily suffering the photographer's attention. Some of my other favorites include: a colorful sari wrapped middle-eastern woman pumping gas in Kansas City; a young woman with bouffant hair, wearing a cotton-candy pink jacket holding her pet rabbit in a plastic carrying case; a forlorn woman on a New York City street holding a spectacular Christmas wreath; a man grilling a single hamburger on a broken patio in Cincinnati; and
"Motorcyclists," which shows a man on a motorcycle, wearing goggles and a leather jacket, with an adorable baby in the sidecar wearing a helmet.

Douglas R. Nickel, who wrote the Introduction, is director of the Center for Creative Photography and associate professor of art history in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Ian Frazier, who contributed another fine essay is an author.

I don't usually buy coffee table books, although some of them are gorgeous. I have found that while I may admire the work a few times, I wind up placing the volume in a prominant place and then only glance at it occasionally, while dusting. This book is special though. "Stranger Passing" is a "travelogue of sorts, a detached, understated but compelling portrait of the people with whom Sternfeld has come into contact during his itinerant journeys." The photographer compels us to question the assumptions we make about others. This is an extraordinary book by an American master.

5 out of 5 stars Photographic short stories.......2001-09-27

These sixty portraits of American strangers are rich with an intelligent, questioning beauty. I was dazzled by the exhibit in San Francisco, but now I'm especially glad to have the accompanying book. I rarely find it worthwhile to purchase museum exhibit catalogues, but what I love about "Stranger Passing" is that I can ponder a given image as long as I like, "reading and re-reading" it as I would a really good short story. Indeed, many of these portraits seem as laden with interpretive possibilities as a story by Chekhov or Alice Munro or T. C. Boyle. From a grizzled woman selling papers in the middle of a Colorado boulevard, to a solitary New York banker having dinner, his aloneness matched by a single tulip in front of his little bistro table: I found myself deeply moved by the lavish yet subtle artistry Sternfeld has bestowed on these people and places--each one unique yet somehow familiar--that he encountered in this strange and wonderful country of ours.

5 out of 5 stars Americans Revisited.......2001-09-06

This is the best photographic testament to the USA since Robert Frank came to shore and showed us how strange and beautiful our country was nearly fifty years ago. The subject of these photographs are both ordinary and extraordinary people, who we may cross paths with during any given day. The brilliance of Sternfeld's art is the way these images draw you into the world of each subject. Even the most superficially mundane subject such as two suburban kids standing in a cul-de-sac is cause for reflection. Most of these portraits economically use the scenery to define the world of each individual. In the end, the images are a celebration of anonymous Americans (one can't say "typical" because this collection shows you that there is no such thing as a typical American) in common settings. In my mind, the best images here evoke the mystery and power of a Vermeer painting. The way they heighten our experience of everyday images is what I think they call art.
A side note: If you have the chance, you must see the exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The hyperreal poster-size prints are a wonder to behold. And the cumulative effect of these images leaves one exaltant. (Oh yeah, there's also a pretty good Ansel Adams exhibit curated by John Szarkowski on the floor above.)

5 out of 5 stars redefining "landscape" photography.......2001-08-28

Joel Sternfeld travels the roads of America, and takes pictures with his large-format camera. Although all his pictures include people in various situations (attending a party, selling coffee, hanging out in their own homes, vacationing, promenading, relaxing, observing, working), what he is really interested in, is the depiction of landscapes and soft outplay of the mid-afternoon light. There is an overwhelming sense of loneliness. His composition style is superb; his depiction of quality of light reflections of the industrial surfaces is without precedence. In my opinion, Sternfeld really stands on its own. Not since Robert Frank's "The Americans" have I seen such a collection. His compositions are best reminiscent of Philip-Lorca diCorcia's; but somehow people are not the center of attention (and sometimes not even of focus), what is important is the quality of landscapes and how they shape human lives.

4 out of 5 stars Texans, Gun Control & a Japanese take on them.......2001-08-09

Having been born and raised in the Texas that Kawaguchi attempts to capture in his portrayal (done fairly well, IMHO, if a bit stereotyped), I think I can safely say that if Yamaoka really had walked into a Texas bar and given that pitch on gun control, he never would have walked back out again. Well, he would have, but only on a stretcher. Other than that, it's good book, and that ends on a cliffhanger, no less.

                    4 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2000-10-12

The mangaka (manga creator) of Eagle is Kaiji Kawaguchi, who is famous for his manga The Silent Service, which English language critics have called "reminiscent of Tom Clancy", because it utilized the rogue submarine premise of The Hunt for Red October. Eagle is a both a commentary on politics in modern America and a somewhat soap-operatic story of relationships. At the beginning of the story, reporter Takashi Jo is called to his boyhood home on Okinawa, a small island in the Japanese archipelago, to identify the body of his mother. While he is going through his mother's apartment, he notices that the picture of his father, an American soldier who he never knew, is missing from its customary place. Shortly after this, he learns that he has been assigned to go to America to cover the campaign of Kenneth Yamaoka, a Democratic senator from New York who has recently announced that he will campaign for the Democratic nomination for president. The reason for his selection is baffling to Takashi, and to his colleagues and superiors - he has never covered politics or international affairs, and he admits to himself that his articles were merely filler for the local editions of the paper he works for, the Maicho Shimbun.

Takashi learns, not long after arriving in America, that the reason for his selection was personal, not because of his professional qualifications. As a reporter, he has to struggle to maintain his objectivity in the face of ambivalent feelings about Senator Yamaoka, animosity from the Senator's wife Patricia, his love for the Senator's adopted daughter and press secretary, Rachel, and the shifting political currents around the charismatic senator. The first four volumes of Eagle (about 100 pages each) have been released both individually and as part of an omnibus edition which combines the four volumes into one paperback. Kawaguchi traces the senator's personal history, telling the story of his transformation from enlisted soldier to influential lawyer to politician, and reveals enough of the behind the scenes story and the public events - fundraisers, debates, and primaries - of Yamaoka's campaign to make the reader want to know more.

Kawaguchi's drawings are more realistic than those of most of the manga which have been translated and released in America; they couldn't be called superdeformed or kawaii (cute) by any stretch of the imagination. The artistic style goes well with the story and mood of this manga. I'm definitely hooked, and I can't wait to read the four forthcoming volumes of this series, to see what happens next.

4 out of 5 stars This is starting to get interesting. . ........2000-06-10

If you've read my review on the first volume of the "Eagle" saga, you know that I wasn't particularly impressed with it. Well, I have to say that this volume had me truly enthraled. Particularly the "debate" between Yamaguchi (? sorry I can't quite keep his name straight) and Albert "Noah." The whole buisiness of 'is it better to train the sheep or the sheepherders?' really had my attention. I found my self arguing with both men. I'm still not absolutely certain that this book is a keeper, but the fact that I was internally debating the characters is a good sign (for me, anyway) that this novel is going somewhere. So far, this has been the best novel in the series. I'm looking forward to reading more. I won't make any other comment than that - I have to read more of it before I can say yea or nay to it.

With the presidential election right around the corner, Kaiji Kawaguchi's political manga makes it's timely arrival. The plot revolves around a young Japanese reporter and the Asian-American presidential candidate that it is his job to cover. While the art was very good, and the idea behind it was intriguing, I'm afraid I wasn't terribly immpressed with Kawaguchi-san's work. Perhaps it is a doubt as to whether a Nihon-jin can really understand the American political system, perhaps it is just that he hits too close to home. The story has potential, I'll say that much. I won't give up on it yet.

5 out of 5 stars An Intellectual Hemingway.......2004-09-23

Here is a highly engaging book that ranks among the best I've read this year. Palmer is a storyteller; sometimes he writes about true incidents, sometimes he writes fiction based on truth. One thing in guaranteed, though -- his tales, true or imagined, teach and entertain in a way that few books are capable of achieving. Palmer, who might be called a more intellectual Hemingway, has traveled the world, smoking hash, taking mistresses, and killing monstruous hippos. He writes about these things with wit, irony, and an eye for the deeper truth of any situation. Politics, language, sex. cocaine -- everything is fair game for Palmer's pen, and they are all treated with equal parts respect and awe. Honestly, his writing is the next best thing to being there. Few writers are able to achieve the near-perfect narrative; Palmer is one of them. His book should be on every must-read list. - (...)

                        Book Description

Garry Nelson's account of a run-of-the-mill season with Charlton Athletic instantly established itself as a soccer classic. It reveals more about the up-and-down reality of being a football player than any number of star autobiographies. Its focus is on the overcrowded treatment room, comeback games for the stiffs in front of a few fans, and the occasional highs before the next low strikes you from behind. Told with wit, intelligence, and insight, it is a riveting story as we come to appreciate one man's efforts to earn a living playing the game he loves and to which he has contributed so much.
