Customer Reviews:
Mainly Classic Designs.......2003-06-17
This book will not teach you how to sew curtains but it will give you loads of ideas for your window treatment. However, it is only ideal for those looking for classical designs since no modern styles are shown.
It also lacks new creative designs, I always felt that each design is familiar to me.
Great source of ideas for elaborate window treatments.......2003-04-20
The book contains line drawings of styles for all the various elements of a window treatment as well as ideas for dealing with different kinds of windows. The book decomposes window treatments into pelmets, valences, etc., etc., etc., with pages of line drawings of styles for each element. Then, it pulls the various elements together into a total look.
I was leant this book, but I found it so helpful I bought my own. It has drawbacks. If you want something simple and/or you plan to make them yourself, this probably isn't the book for you. There are no instructions or measurements of any kind, just the drawings. But if you're working with a decorator who knows a professional, or are a decorator yourself, then this book will help your imagination run wild.
The Curtain Sketchbbok 2 by Wendy Baker.......2002-06-13
This book is really great for any windows. Mostly if you are a interior designer. It gaves you lot of good examples which curtains will good in what rooms with different types of furnitures. This book gaves you something that no one esle has. You will be the first one to have that design in your room before someone esle does
Curtain Sketchbook 2.......2000-03-28
This is a great book if you're looking for unique window treatments. I wanted something everyone else didn't have. It is not a how-to book but the illustrations are very detailed.
Excellent sourcebook for design professionals........1999-10-24
The Sketchbook has page after page of ideas for easy reference and presentation during consultations. Cuts your workload with ready- made artwork. I want her latest edition printed in 1998 or 99.

The English are famed for their love of pageantry, theatricality, dressing-up, secrets, rituals, cricket, irony, the past--in fact, anything with which to disguise themselves and baffle onlookers. A foreign journalist said recently that it is the only country in the world where the children behave like adults and the adults like children. There could be no better introduction to this topsy-turvy wonderland than this lavishly illustrated guide to all those weird offices that still exist--offices that in any other country would have been quietly and efficiently abolished ages ago. Here is the Chief Butler and Grand Carver of England (the Earl of Denbigh, by hereditary right), the High Almoner, the Lord Warden of the Stannaries (responsible for "knackt bals"--don't ask!), and the Herb Strewer at the Coronation. It is all undeniably arcane and faintly ridiculous, but the child in us all will find it a hugely entertaining splash of color and eccentricity in an increasingly drab and uniform global culture. These Keepers of the Kingdom are sure to disappear before too much longer. Enjoy them while you can. --Christopher Hart, Amazon.co.uk
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating insight into Britain's fusty institutions.......2004-04-23
If you have any interest in Britain's history and institutions, this is a great coffee table book to own. If, for example, you're a law student, and you want to know what the rolls, as kept by the Master of the Rolls, look like, there's a photo here, with a full page description of the office.
If you're British and you aspire to any of these grand old posts, with or without the ermine, this is probably a good book to start plotting your ascent.
I've also read the slightly more recent 'Jubilee' edition (which I gave to my father as a present and is available from amazon.co.uk). Only a few of the entries have changed, largely to reflect the replacement of Conservative politicians by their Labour equivalents.
If you want another analysis of where the power lies in Britain today, but without the photos, read Anthony Sampson's excellent 'Who Runs this Place?'.
Delightful.......2001-06-06
The American Revolution was unfortunate in one minor respect. United States national politics and governance is terribly boring. The office-holders on this side of the Atlantic are called President, Senator, Congressman, Under-Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs and other dull republican titles. We don't get to have a High Almoner, a Swan Marker, a Boy Bishop, or any of the other offices the British have accumulated over the centuries. Not even an Herb Strewer.
This book examines the histories of many of Britain's historic offices, both ancient and relatively modern. The office-holders are beautifully photographed, many in their distinctive dress and regalia. Many of these stories are fascinating. I never knew, for example, that the Bishop of Norwich is also legally the Abbot of St. Benet-at-Holme or that anyone visiting the Hospital of St. Cross can still get the Wayfarer's Dole, a piece of bread and a cup of beer, merely by asking for it.
Essential for anyone interested in history. Also, a fascinating read.
Fascinating.......2000-08-03
It's quite fascinating to see what went to managing a kingdom. Even though many of these are largely cermonaly now, it's still makes me think what it must have been like in England's hey day when all of these people where at the height of their power.
The pictures and writing are top notch.

Customer Reviews:
A haunting peek into the world that was Storyville.......1998-07-01
My literary introduction into turn-of-the-century New Orleans, specifically Storyville, was a novel by Frank Yerby entitled "The Girl from Storyville; A Victorian Novel". On the cover of that particular edition is an artists rendering of one of Bellocq's Storyville photographs. The images of that book have remained vivid in my mind for more than 20 years, and when I saw the photos in this book, I was once again taken back to a life and time so long ago, and yet so real. The stark, poorly lit images extoll the gritty, decidedly non-aesthetic world in which these women lived. It is, at times, disconcerting to view the gay smiles on their faces, knowing , or at least supposing, their misery. The history of that place and time will continue to fascinate me as will the very real record preserved for us by E.J. Bellocq.
a masterpiece.......1998-03-14
One of the most extraordinary collections of photographs ever published. I suppose I still prefer the original 'Storyville Portraits', but it's certainly good to have so many extra photos, hitherto unpublished. It's so difficult to describe the unique qualities of these strange, compelling images. They seem suffused with pathos, sometimes simultaneously grotesque and romantic. I love the photo of the naked girl scratching a butterfly into wall-plaster. She seems almost to be a pinned-up specimin herself, flattened across the space of the wall. But the lighting - here and in all of the images - so lovingly sculpts the figure that all feelings of exploitation vanish.
Susan Sontag's introduction is a big disappointment. She seems to have little to say and shows very little real feeling for the photographs. For much more sensitive insights you need to find the original introduction - consigned to the back of this edition - or read Michael Ondaatje's 'Coming Through Slaughter' and Brooke Bergen's 'Storyville: A Hidden Mirror'.
Surreal.......1997-12-09
A lovely book, and one you might appreciate if you: a) Enjoy beautiful photography, b) Find prostitutes romantic, c) Are excited by plump women, or d) Are interested in offbeat and surreal images. Many of Bellocq's photographs are truly odd. For example, the one of a woman whose face is bizarrely hidden behind a too-large Zorro mask, slumped awkwardly in a wooden chair. Or the one of a woman wearing only a sly smile and high heeled shoes, her elbow propped uncomfortably on a window sill, armpit cheerfully thrust outward. Or the one of a woman in a weird full body stocking. Some of the pictures are weirder still for having the faces of the subjects crudely blacked out, or for being blotted with corrosion and cracks. Of course, these were not due to Bellocq, but they do contribute to the surreal, almost Joel-Peter Witkenesque look of his photographs. Wonderful all the same.
Storyville Portraits by E.J. Bellocq.......1997-04-28
New Orleans' Storyville was prior to it's closing in 1917, the only legalized red-light district in North America. The photographer Bellocq (inaccurately portrayed in the film "Pretty Baby") recorded it's woman in a series of mesmerizing and touching portraits. In 1970 New York's Museum of Modern Art
put on an exhibition of the long forgotten, recently re-discovered photographs (painstakingley reprinted from the original negatives by their rescuer, the noted photographer Lee Friedlander)and issued an accompanying book. I borrowed the book from the library while in art school several years ago and have lusted after it ever since. Long out-of-print, but recently reissued and expanded, I found the book at Amazon.com. Beautifully printed and presented, the photographs still retain their hold on me...

the latest Robin at his finest.......2000-03-31
This trade paperback collects two Robin story arcs, the first telling of the death of Tim Drake's mother and the crippling of his father (before he became Robin) and the second telling of Tim's first conflict with the Joker without Batman watching his back. Both stories are satisfying and help to develop the young Robin as a character. The Joker's Wild story, reprinted from the second Robin miniseries, is really incredible. Tim is depicted as a totally normal teenager in most regards (although he has an odd after school job), and Chuck Dixon actually can write teenagers as actual people, something a lot of writers who try to write about teens can't do. All in all, a great book for fans of the dynamic duo, especially Robin, of course.

Book Description
Through powerful personal narratives and photographs, this examination of the lives touched by the Vietnam War draws from the experience of those people, both American and Vietnamese, affected by the war on the battlefront and at home. Stories recounted include those of the soldiers, nurses, refugees, Amerasians, and of those who fearfully awaited the return of friends and family members. Ultimately, the stories reflect moments of history in the hope and despair that define individuals' lives.

A True Masterpiece.......2005-01-16
The author is gifted with both lens and pen...the vivid photos coupled with poignant stories drags the reader through a twisting maze of emotions.
I believe that this is one of the very best books concerning a generation that is still trying to find it's way or perhaps come to terms with themselves...so many stories, so many unanswered questions....so much pain...so much heartbreak...so many tears.
Each story is filled with a vast spectrum of emotions.
Charlene Edwards is simply gifted...I can say no more to describe her talent.
I am unable to add more for fear of becoming redundant...I lack the words to offer a review that is worthy. I can only say that 5 stars is inadequet.

An Essential Journey.......2004-05-11
Even if you couldn't read the words, the stunning photographs alone in this work would reveal the depth and range of emotion endured by everyone touched by the Vietnam conflict. Each personal vignette carries a similar theme - why were we there, how did the atrocities of the war effect me, where am I today? Sadly, there are more tragedies than triumphs, as with all wars, but so poignantly true in this one. Yet, you must go back with these people, imagine what it was like for them, remember how you experienced those times, and hopefully emerge with a compassionate understanding of what it all meant.
There are other books out there titled Voices from Vietnam, but Ms. Edwards has listened to these particular voices and played them back as a ringing chorus that will move you to forgive but never forget the victims on both sides of this war.
"Voices From Vietnam".......2003-02-13
Charlene Edwards has put together a wonderfully deverse and mosaic puzzle that refects the human side of the Vietnam War. She has captured the spiritual and emotional energies of those she interviewed and photographed in her book. The book not only has wonderful photos but the text bleeds with heart felt stories.
Her 10 year quest to share the feelings and images of those personal experiences was a gift to the rest of us. I found myself moved to tears at times, by the images and stories she has introduced us to in her book. I am richer for having had the experience of reading this book.
Understanding = Healing.......2002-12-07
Voices from Vietnam is a brilliant and riveting collection of images and essays that brought the Vietnam war alive to someone who was born at its conclusion. It is a must-read for anyone who served in the war or had loved ones who did. As the daughter of a Vietnam veteran, the stories in this book have been instrumental in helping me to understand some of the things my father experienced as a soldier in this war. This compelling book shares stories from every possible perspective, yet the themes of pain, suffering, survival and triumph are very much the same. This is a very personal, very human look at the affects of war. I highly recommend it as a tool for healing and for understanding.
Two Sides of The Same Face.......2002-12-06
Voices From Vietnam was written by someone who was very young when this war took place, but who was drawn to it and remained dedicated to the understanding of it for the rest of her life. This book is very special because it humanizes both sides and helps us to realize that it was a tragic mistake from the very beginning. Misguided but well-meaning Americans went into the abyss that was left behind by the French colonizers. The people of Vietnam were devastated by over 11 long years of fighting with the Americans .The most powerful nation in the world could not ultimately overpower the determination and tremendous courage of this tiny and poor country. One of the greatest and most profound lessons as demonstrated in this book is that the Vietnamese have forgiven us for the utter decimation of their country and are willing to help us heal the terrible wounds inflicted on both sides. The author introduces us to many people and their stories and shows us that it is possible to embrace your former enemies and work together towards a better future for all.For many Vietnamese the legacy of the war is saddness-the loss of time and place ,of family and friends ,of youth and innocence. If you turn the coin over you find once-young Americans burdened with those same loses. In the end we are a mirror image of each other. Perhaps we will never be able to fully make sense of what we endured on both sides for eleven years. The Vietnamese know they won the war but there was no real winner. The author shows us some of these people and how they have rebuilt their country and extended a hand to us in forgivness and friendship. The many beautiful photographs and interviews tell this story perfectly and for every one of us to understand perfectly. This is an outstanding testimony to the good we all have in us-if only we would try to remember it.

Alone Among Friends is the first full-scale biography of W. Robert Parks, the eleventh and longest-serving president of Iowa State University. The life of Parks and the evolution of his university are intimately intertwined compelling this biography to serve as a history of the nation's first land-grand university as well. Alone Among Friends shows how a people's college, under Parks' stewardship, went on to become one of the nation's great institutions of higher learning a the peer of even the more prestigious European university systems. Alone Among Friends is a detailed, candid, occasionally humorous, exceptionally well presented and highly recommended biography of the man who, more than any other, is inextricably linked to Iowa State University.
