Book Description
The Dock Manual is the only book devoted entirely to planning, constructing, and maintaining residential docks on rivers, lakes, and oceans.
Customer Reviews:
The Dock Manual.......2007-09-24
I've built decks and docks in the past and I find this text to be of immense value as I prepare to build a new system of decks and docks at a new location. I'd suggest this this one to anyone who was about to build near or on the water.
Great information!.......2005-08-31
Very thorough. Just the information I needed to determine what type of dock to build on my lakefront property.
Something Missing.......2004-02-08
Yes, this book provides a well-illustrated overview of approaches to dock building and choices of materials. But it doesn't go far enough if you have a significant tidal range or if the wind blows. What's missing is any introduction to engineering. How to make sure the ramp doesn't fall off your float when the tide goes out. How to figure the static forces on your dock caused by 4 knot currents. How to estimate the wave heights and dynamic forces in 80 knot winds. And how to design a dock that will survive this abuse. You might want to involve a professional engineer in these situations, but that can be true of pretty much anything to do with docks. A book with this title should at least introduce you to these subjects and provide references for the gory details. Like some others, the author believes books like this should be peppered with jokes. Personally I find this annoying, but I must admit his jokes are above average. So if you want a funny introduction to building docks in gentle places, this book is for you.
Excellent DIY dock reference.......2002-07-26
I gave up trying to find any useful information on dock building and then happened across this book not long ago. Max Burns has written a very comprehensive reference book that covers almost any imaginable dock/shore situation including the one I was looking for . If you're thinking of building your own, add this book to your library!

"Two artists, two friends, two very different lives"--from jacket flap.......2005-10-20
A fascinating study of two women--close friends--who attended art school together, but whose paths then diverged widely. One woman, Alice Neel, became one of the greatest American painters of the 20th century. The other artist, Rhoda Medary, chose a different life as a housewife whose artworks remained obscure.
How and why these two painters traveled their respective paths makes for illuminating reading, especially for today's woman artist. The issues these women grappled with are far from being resolved in contemporary society: how a woman balances a career with marriage and/or motherhood; how an artist responds to pressure from family and culture to conform; how to follow your dream but still pay your bills. Highly recommended.

Lacks Color Images.......2000-04-08
The narration of this book seemed to be very useful and well researched, however, even though a great number of her paintings where present throughout the book, I would have preferred them be in color instead of black and white illustrations. That was most disappointing.

Book Description
This book presents a collection of powerful portraits of women by one of the twentieth century's most intriguing artists. Alice Neel is largely regarded as one of the most important women artists of this century. Her work combines the brutal honesty -- and lush brushwork -- of Lucian Freud with a nod towards the expressionist palette. She first came to prominence in the 1970s when critics recognized the extraordinary power of her portraits which captured, with brilliant color and incisive line, the psyche of her sitters. Alice Neel's Women is the first volume to collect her portraits of women, which are among her most penetrating and accomplished works. Nearly 140 color images reveal every aspect of her impressive oeuvre, from the dark and somber portraits of the 1930s and 1940s, which were inspired by social realism, to the brightened portraits of the 1960s and 1970s. Among her portraits are a host of artworld figures, such as eminent art historians Linda Nochlin and Ann Sutherland Harris as well as artists Faith Ringgold and Annie Sprinkle. Alice Neel's work is collected by major institutions throughout the country, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, The National Gallery of Art, and many more.

Customer Reviews:
A good end to a great trilogy........2007-05-16
This is the culmination of a fantastic and underated title that has gone under the radar of much of today's western manga readers. Fools!
The city has gone to hell and the division of Black and White at the end of book two has acted as a herald of woe for not only the city but the rest of the cast as well. Without wanting to give too much away I will say that the fate of characters was met swiftly but intelligently and in a way that was in line with the whole concept of a world grounded in a corrupt and degenerating urban landscape.
Black and White remain the heart and soul of the story despite being apart for much of it, allowing the reader to feel the separation and distance experieced by the characters, albeit in their different ways.
The art is one that is a great and unusual blend of Eastern and continental underground styles that is able also to communicate a great sense of sound. This is hard to do in comics and gives credit to Matsumoto.
I cannot recommend this manga enough. It is outrageous that the first volume is out of print. It is really worth the effort to get hold of.
An "existential urban punk" that you won't forget.
hyuuuuu!.......2007-04-04
This might be the best graphic novel ever made, and I don`t say that lightly. It`s a shame that it doesn`t have a wide circulation in Europe and US. It`s pretty much impossible to compare to anything else, Black and White it`s the most lyrical and at at the same time the most punk comic you`ll ever read. Think Miyazaki, Tank Girl and Takeshi Kitano all wrapped up in one story that is so good it hurts. Just get it, if you like indie comics chances are this is your new favorite one.
Magnificent.......2005-02-26
It all comes together. The line quality is in itself endlessly diverting. The vision of the city and its technology and architecture is totally unique. The story... the fabulous, ass-kicking flying boy-hoodlums with hearts of gold, perching atop telephone poles and living in an abandoned car... a techno-post-modern peter pan cast in a deliciously not-anime Tokyo ghetto. These 3 books are incredible. Don't miss them.
thats what friendships are about.......1999-08-13
this book is one of the best graphic novels i've read. i liked the drawings a lot. simple but spicific. i liked the friendship between black and white. and the freindship between the two kids and chocolate the gangster. i recomend it very much
Wonderful, magical, excellent, and surreal!.......1998-11-12
This book is simply wonderful. Though the story might be somewhat stereotypical, the art and characters redeem it. The art is a strange hybrid of Japanese and French styles. The characters are really touching, Black and the way he protects the retarted White, and White with his happy, almost microcephalic observations and attitude. I can't wait to read volume two, and I bet once you read volume one, you won't be able to wait either. Well worth the price of admission.
Customer Reviews:
One volume too many?.......2007-08-24
I own volume 1 and volume 2 of Batman: Black and White. I was very excited when I saw volume 3 available. But sadly, this might be just one volume too many of this extraordinary series. None of these stories have the impact or imagination that the previous volumes had. I consider myself an intelligent person, but I had to go back and read several stories twice in a row in order to understand the endings. In a couple of stories I still don't understand the endings. These stories are confusing, dull, humorless, and the artwork really isn't up to par. In the case of "Fat City", drawn by Mick McMahon, the artwork was downright annoying and ugly. The writers here didn't seem as inspired as the previous volumes' writers were. I guess in a nutshell, this was a letdown. Buy it if you must just to complete the 3 volume set. But if you are reading the Batman Black and White volumes for the first time, please skip this one and read volumes one and two, which are far superior.
