America's quintessential house style is reinvented for the 21st century family in this book. Farmhouses evoke nostalgic memories, real or imagined, of a simpler life, and deep, nourishing connections to the seasons and the land. This remarkable collection details and celebrates today's interpretation of the American farmhouse by focusing on traditional elements as adapted for modern needs, such as porches, roofs, windows, mudrooms, doorways, vestibules, fireplaces, and nooks. The 20 homes in this book represent today's best interpretations of this classic style in new and renovated homes designed for modern living. In suburban and rural communities from Maine to California, The Farmhouse celebrates an enduring American icon. This engaging tour, including over 300 color photographs and drawings that vividly showcase the farmhouse of today in a variety of settings and seasons, will delight, instruct, and inspire homeowners, architects, designers, and builders alike. Site and floor plans plus sidebars with historical detail are also included.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - Full of Great Ideas.......2006-10-14

This book is a valuable resource as my husband and I plan our "farmhouse" that we intend to build next year beginning in February. It gives examples of restorations, new construction built to look like the old classical farmhouses across the midwest, and amazing interiors. I love the shaded boxes of information, emphasizing the importance of features such as shape, the color white, porches, etc. It is a lesson book for those wanting a basic education on how to talk farmhouses. We bought three books, and this one is far superior to the others.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect and Invaluable.......2006-01-03

One of over $1,000 worth of books I ordered prior to starting our remodel, The Farmhouse is above and beyond the best book I bought for our tastes, and is the primary resource I have given to our architect. No country shabby chic here -- the style is spare, warm, and elegant. Great photos and text. This book will save us thousands by beautifully getting across our ideas for our new Boulder, Colorado home. Those who like this book would also like Jeremiah Eck's The Distinctive Home.

4 out of 5 stars Review-The Farmhouse: New Inspiration for the Classic American Home.......2005-11-02

An informative book with good examples and photos.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Inspirational Book!.......2004-11-29

This book is a great quality hardcover full of spectacular color photos of the traditional farm style. I found it's content and pictures insipiring and it would make a great gift for any 'farm-style' enthusiast... or it's great for any coffee table! Really an excellent book, un-beatable in terms of conveying a classic style and delivering inspiring ideas!

3 out of 5 stars Not for those looking for a "classic" farmhouse style.......2004-09-14

This book, although well detailed and presented left something to be desired as far as I was concerned. Appreciating the "classic farmhouse" style, which covers a wide variety of architectural detail, I did not like many of the homes highlighted in this book. They were much too contemporized for my "Yankee" preferences. Oddly, the house most resembling a traditional farmhouse style inside & out was a California Greek Revival. The unusual angling of portions of 1 house, the strange selection of plastic siding for another, the glass & steel addition to an otherwise beautiful famhouse, left me wanting more. I'm sure some people like this style, but they were "cold" buildings. If you are looking for a book on beautifully detailed, classic farmhouses, look no further than "American Farmhouses" by Leah Rosch. I believe a modern day farmhouse can be built with an eye to the past and livability for today without sacrificing the warmth and traditional look.

Book Description

All artists are tired of persuading their nearest and dearest to look sad…look glad…look mad…madder…no, even madder…okay, hold it. For those artists (and their long-suffering friends), here is the best book ever. Facial Expressions includes more than 2,500 photographs of 50 faces—men and women of a variety of ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities—each demonstrating a wide range of emotions and shown from multiple angles. Who can use this book? Oh, only every artist on the planet, including art students, illustrators, fine artists, animators, storyboarders, and comic book artists. But wait, there's more! Additional photos focus on people wearing hats and couples kissing, while illustrations show skull anatomy and facial musculature. Still not enough? How about a one-of-a-kind series of photos of lips pronouncing the phonemes used in human speech? Animators will swoon—and artists will show a range of facial expressions from happy to happiest to ecstatic.

5 out of 5 stars Facial Expressions.......2007-09-29

This is a wonderful resource for artists. It offers a variety of models with a wide range of expressions. I Highly reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE NECESSITY!.......2007-09-19

I just recently started creating a webcomic and I never could have done it without this book. The expressions range from highly exaggerated to more subtle and, I promise you, will work for almost any expression you want to create. Also, many expressions are shot at multiple angles, making it much easier for me to create the exact image I am thinking of. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for drawing comics.......2007-08-23

I'd used this book often when drawing my manga. However do note that the facial expressions are mostly very exaggerated. When drawing my characters talking or just a gentle smile, I could not find reference from there.I'd to use a mirror. I hope there's a volume two with two people interacting with each other and different camera angles.

4 out of 5 stars Ummm a little disappointing great book.......2007-07-16

I think it's the only book right now which has addressed reference material for facial expressions. It's really useful, but professionals may get disappointed with the quality of some pictures and blurriness. It's not that all pictures are bad quality, but when you have such an amazing reference you ought to expect a lot and that's where this book is disappointing. But for sure this book will be useful for all beginners and probably higher level artists. For this price don't hesitate to buy if you really want a reference for facial expressions. Some people may not like the quality of the paper, but I think you should also consider the price.

4 out of 5 stars good drawing book.......2007-07-05

i thought the book was something different from what i ordered. but i guess its good for artists

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Close, but no cigar!.......2004-09-14

It is obvious from this book that J.J.Allen has a wealth of experience as a successful portrait photographer.
Unfortunately, this does not translate into being a good instructor.
While Mr. Allen clearly knows his stuff, his lessons are wordy, incomplete, and not well thought out. The portraits used to illustrate a point seem to be mostly chosen from his file cabinet rather than shot to illustrate that point. In some instances, examinations of the portraits reveal themselves to be shot in a method other than what is described.
Most of the fault, however, lies with the publisher, Amherst Media. The lighting diagrams are completely out of scale and sometimes wrong.
It is exhaustive to try and match, for instance, such elements as Image 22 and Image 23 with Diagram 11 and Diagram 12 on pages with no numbers with the accompanying text on pages 36 and 37.
On the good side is a wealth of excellent portraits in a plethora of styles and methods and a few true nuggets of solid advise that will be truly useful to the aspiring portrait photographer.
All in all, it is not a BAD book, it is just that for the money, there are many that are a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLE IMAGENS & SIMPLE DIAGRAMS.......2004-08-03

MOST PEOPLE INTERESTED IN PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY ARE EAGER TO FIND OUT HOW PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPERS MAKE IT. I THINK THE BEST WAY TO SHOW IT IS TO FEATURE THE FINAL IMAGE SHOWING ITS LIGHTING DIAGRAM TOO.THE AUTHOR SHOWS IN THIS BOOK HIS TECHNIQUE OF POSING AND LIGHTING IN A VERY CLEAR WAY.MOST CLASSICAL PORTRAIT IMAGES ARE FEATURED WITH ITS RESPECTIVE DIAGRAM IN A VERY SIMPLE EXAMPLE. THE ASSOCIATION OF THESE BOTH ELEMENTS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS GUIDE.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2004-03-26

I have spent a lot of time trying to find books that would help me improve my skills in portrait photography. I would buy a book thinking it would answer my questions on technique, and the type of equiptment used, etc., only to be disapointed in the generalness of the information. Finally I have found a book that is specific enough to learn something solid.

4 out of 5 stars Lighting..........2003-07-25

It is a wonderful book and I am glad that I bought it, no regrets here.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dry but solid reading.......2003-02-23

I got a little sleepy several times trying to muck through the text, but all the info you need to get started setting up a studio light setup is there. Technical terms abound, though, so make sure you know a gobo from a barndoor.

This third volume in the series comes with beautiful cover art by Stephen Fabian and nine superb short stories (plus two poems) by the master of heroic fantasy. Every tale in the book is a great read, several of these being Lovecraft inspired, and there are fascinating characters: Cormac of Connacht, Solomon Kane, Black Turlogh, and Athelstane. I highly recommend it, and expect this series to only get better.

      Book Description

Rebecca Browning Rankin was a politician in the best sense of the word. She supervised the New York Municipal Reference Library for 32 years until her retirement in 1952. Serving in many key policy-making positions, both on mayoral committees and in professional organizations, Rankin was an excellent lobbyist for the role of information in educating the electorate. She published over fifty articles and books on aspects of city government and libraries, and delivered weekly radio speeches on WNYC from 1928 to 1938. Her career as a librarian, author and radio commentator demonstrates the use of research in the formation of public policy decisions and provides a unique perspective on politics in New York. Rankin also served as president of several library organizations including the Special Libraries Association, which she led to national status during her tenure. During the Depression, she established the Association's employment service and worked with Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and other library officials to provide pensions for public librarians in New York City. Rankin and La Guardia shared the belief that government should carry out the will of the people and care for their needs, and the two worked together to make this a reality.

Quotations from primary sources in the archives of the New York Public Library and the City of New York give the book a strong narrative style. Focusing on Rankin's efforts to document New York City's past as its unofficial historian, the book examines the city's political history during the first half of the twentieth century and illuminates the relationship of the local government with one of its great cultural institutions, the New York Public Library.

      5 out of 5 stars A True Inspiration.......2003-12-22

For those who imagine librarians are like what could have happened to the Donna Reed character if _A Wonderful Life_ hadn't, this volume demonstrates the engagement and vitality of library workers. They collect materials and then present them so that the public can make sense of information and knowledgeably take action. Beyond serving as a search engine, librarians find and deliver to their clienteles an array of useful, entertaining, and educational resources. Ours is a complex world, and we can appreciate assistance the library gives in understanding it.
_A True Politician_ chronicles the life of a librarian who held true to her job as a member of her community. It also offers a hint of romance. I'm glad that I read this inspiring book.

Considered the most important writer of Vietnam's postwar generation, Ho Anh Thai brings an intimate knowledge of the Vietnam War into perspective with a style that is at once whimsical and sharp-sighted. In this first collection to be published in English, we meet characters such as the man who carries his mother's bones in his knapsack in "The Indian." Wherever he goes, the disapproving spirit of his mother seems to watch his actions, and when he extracts the bones from a pond that a lover has thrown them into, his guilt is multiplied upon finding that his mother's finger bones can't be found. In the story "Behind the Red Mist," a young man is magically transported into his own past during the war bombings. He meets his parents before they married and discovers that their generation is actually different from the way in which it had been portrayed to him as a child. Ananda, from "The Man Who Stood on One Leg," swears to pose on one leg, like the god Shiva dancing, until the factory director gives him 1 million rupees to build a temple. The director refuses, but when Ananda dies, the metaphoric temple that was Ananda becomes an emptiness in the town that the director feels compelled to fill. --Susan Swartwout

This collection comprises 9 short stories and 1 novella. All are imaginative and most examine the struggles of the postwar generation in Vietnam. There is a Kafkaesque quality to some of the stories and the novella is especially interesting. Worth a read.

In 2002, soccer's World Cup Finals were played in Japan and South Korea. Following a two-year qualifying campaign, thirty-two countries were involved. While countries such as Brazil and France were among the pre-tournament favorites, the Republic of Ireland had qualified for only the third time in their history.

Ireland's team captain leading up to the finals was Roy Keane, considered by many to be the country's greatest ever player. While soccer is a team sport, Ireland simply wouldn't have been capable of qualifying for the Finals without him. Keane, like all the other members of Ireland's squad, has spent the bulk of his playing career in England - where he has won the Premiership and the F.A. Cup (English soccer's top competitions) several times. He also has a winners medal from the Champions League (Europe's top competition) in his collection. A very focused and determined player, he believes it is necessary to train, eat and rest properly to perform at the highest level.

The events that led up to the World Cup Finals that year, however, must have left him feeling disillusioned with the international set-up. The FAI (the organisation in charge of Irish soccer) had decided that Saipan would be used as the pre-tournament base. After all, it had a very nice hotel. Unfortunately, the team arrived to discover the FAI had brought no soccer balls or training gear - which made training a little difficult. Furthermore, Keane, as captain, wasn't too impressed with the attitude of some of his team-mates; there have been suggestions of late nights and heavy drinking (and I don't mean isotonic fluids). Furthermore, when the training equipment finally arrived, he was unhappy that some were allowed to skip the scheduled training sessions. Keane's anger at what was happening around him led to a huge argument with the squad's coach, Mick McCarthy. It seems that McCarthy found Keane's attitude unacceptable and reservations without foundation; as a result, he dismissed Keane from the squad and sent him home.

The story was huge, and Ireland was divided. A large part of the Irish population bizarrely agreed with McCarthy. Vilified by many in the media, Keane was labelled a traitor. Some made claims about what he'd said to McCarthy. He denied making the most controversial remark, a denial supported by Niall Quinn - another player who'd actually backed McCarthy's position. Keane, however, did have his supporters - among them, the population of Cork City and Conor O'Callaghan. In this book, O'Callaghan looks back to the events of Saipan, the reaction of the Irish people and its effect on him. He was involved in any number of arguments defending Keane - his barber was one of his favorite sparring partners - while the situation left his seven-year-old son thoroughly confused. Like Steve Staunton - who was appointed Ireland's captain after Keane was dismissed - O'Callaghan was brought up in Dundalk. Staunton was another player who'd backed McCarthy at a press conference. One of the funniest incidents takes place at a street party after his neighbour returned home - O'Callaghan made sure his neighbour knew not everyone was happy with his role.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but I'd imagine it has a limited appeal. There'd need to be some interest in soccer, and it will mean more if the reader followed the 2002 World Cup. (Having said that, it probably won't be enjoyed so much by those who supported Mick McCarthy). If you're interested, other books that cover the events of Saipan include "Laptop Dancing and the Nanny Goat Mambo: A Sports Writer's Year" by Tom Humphries and the autobiographies of Niall Quinn and Roy Keane.

5 out of 5 stars Another Lovable Betty Neels ..........2006-11-29

Book Description: When distinguished surgeon Gerard van Doorninck asked Staff Nurse Deborah Culpepper to marry him, his reasons were practical, not romantic. As she had been secretly in love with Gerard for some time, Deborah accepted his terms and hoped for the best. It might all have worked out very happily, had Gerard's friend Claude van Trapp not done his best to try and spoil things!

Gerard is an Orthpaedic Surgeion/Consultant and Deborah, his Theatre Sister, has secretly been in love with him for a long time. She knows he appreciates her nursing skills but doesn't see her as a woman; she is suprised and thrilled when he asks her to marry him. He tells her of course that it is a marriage of convenience. Included are the scenic, architectural, and food descriptions as any Neels reader may expect. ... This Good-Looking Rich Dutch Doctor and Good-Looking British Nurse is a lovable and slightly different Betty Neels - this time the spoiler is a male.

Coenraad & Adelaide van Essen from "Sister Peters in Amsterdam" and Dominic & Abigail van Wijkelen from "Saturday's Child" appear in this story.

                  5 out of 5 stars Comfort food for a reader's soul........2006-06-24

Reading Betty Neels is like listening to George Strait, if you like one song chances are you are going to like all the others, if not, move on. Ms. Neels has essentially written the same story 134 times and if it pleased you once it will satisfy over and over. In this book Deborah, surgical nurse, has secretly been in love with the Dutch doctor who has been working at her hospital for two years. He seems aloof and oblivious to her and others. As the story opens he pops in and asks her to marry him as he is leaving for Holland and wants a companion and hostess to manage his home life and obligations while he continutes his practice. Love is not mentioned and Deborah, who had been on the point of fleeing, gives in and accepts. The plot progresses through fancy dinners and expensive fashions until love triumphs in the end. Though it sounds as if I am mocking, believe me it is just a gentle nudge as I have read most all of these books more than once already in my life and have a stack at hand to fall back on when real reading gets tough. Either this is a comfort zone for you or they will annoy you. But if you choose to embrace them, welcome to my world!

Gerard van Doorninck asked Deborah to marry him, explaining he had found her a sensible reliable girl--one who would make an ideal hostess for his home. Love was not mentioned. But loving him, Deborah found his offer better than losing him.
