Book Description
Until now, homeowners have had to choose between the twin worlds of budget-friendly mediocrity and unaffordable fantasy. Responding to this gap, acclaimed architect Duo Dickinson demonstrates that a customhouse doesn't depend on a fabulous price tag. The House You Build offers a third way of building that is grounded in the realities of time and money, but focuses on your fondest hopes and dreams. Here are 20 real-world situations where unique and imaginative homes were built on real-life budgets. When you build on a budget, there are no right answers, only careful choices. There are 20 dreams in this book, and these dreams came true. The House You Build is the first book of architect-designed homes that presents the real costs of their construction including design fees, the Six Rules on Getting What You Want (and can afford), a broad range of house styles from all over the country, and homes that accommodate a wide variety of lifestyles.
Customer Reviews:
A big disappointment to anyone who wants a normal family home.......2007-02-06
I bought this book with high hopes after seeing the reviews. But it turned out to be a big waste of money. As another reviewer noted, most of these homes are unique and built for specific sites that have views, or wilderness, etc. Many of the homes are quite small and not suitable for families with 2+ kids who want great rooms, guest rooms, offices, etc. The only really useful info are the photos which show a few design styles that you may wish to incorporate into your house, i.e. non-traditional open staircases. But most of the styles can be found in any home magazine.
If you are building a small retirement home and want a unique design then maybe this book is for you. But if you are like the rest of us who are looking to build a nice 2-story family home on a standard suburban lot in a classical cape cod, rambler, victorian or even contemporary style you won't find any useful plans or information. I give it 2* only because it was slightly more useful than the truly awful Dummies book (see my other review).
Good for all intersted in housing design.......2006-03-05
This is a good book for both the professional and the layman. The professional will most certainly find him/herself saying, "I knew that" at some points in the book, but will also glean kernels enough to make it worth his/her time. It is written in a style that is understandable by the "common man", yet doesn't condescend to the professional.
For the layman interested in good design and with a limited, realistic budget, to whom quality is greater in the equation than quantity, it is a veritable treasure trove of interesting and attainable design ideas. If you are embarking on the adventure of building a custom home, you will find inspiration and a vision of what the end goal will be.
The houses in this book are representative of real world examples, which is very refreshing, nodding neither to the McMansions that are so popular in today's subdivisions, nor to their hybrid architecturally aloof cousins on the other end of the spectrum (both being ostentatious in their own right).
great book.......2006-02-25
If you are interested in alternative ideas to home building and want to get out of the big box store and track home mentality, read this book.
Helpful book for home building/remodeling.......2005-06-07
I originally got this book from the library. It was so full of good ideas and helpful advice that I decided to buy it.
A wide range of house styles are covered in the book, from contemporary to more conventional, but they're all interesting. I especially liked the author's suggestions for minimizing costs while ensuring beauty and construction quality.
I'm not planning to build a house, but am planning to remodel. This book is full of excellent photos and ideal solutions.
Not what I expected.......2005-04-21
These are not houses that people would build. I was very disappointed in this book. The houses pictured were only the weird modern type that most people wouldn't build. We don't want to build a standard boring "production" home but these were just too far out there.
Book Description
This delightful book is designed for the many artists who are motivated to paint and draw, yet who find it difficult to fit art into their daily lives. It is especially for those artists who see art as a necessary outlet for their creativity.
Dory Kanter's inspirational instruction is perfect for both beginning and experienced artists alike. Unlike other books that simply try to motivate readers to be creative, Art Escapes gives readers fun, easy-to-execute ideas for building an "art habit." Inside, they'll find daily projects for drawing, watercolor, mixed media, collage and more. All of these projects are presented simply, yet none are simplistic. The concealed spiral binding makes using the book easy and accessible. Readers will increase their skill and creativity, as well as find the time to make a little bit of art everyday.

Great Leaping Off Point for a Daily Creative Practice.......2007-09-20
I am a writer who uses a daily writing practice to keep my life working better and occasionally I happen upon something that could work in my "regular" writing, but more than that - I also create surprisingly cool word combinations or notice a thread to pick up and examin later.
I am beginning to dabble in the visual arts as well, so when I saw this book I simply had to pick it up. At first, I was looking at it from the Writer's standpoint... and even there it had merits.
This is almost like a guide, a mentor, to having a daily artistic practice - a way to use your daily life and experiences to create an artful life... from which more art will flow.
I love an early-on statement author Dory Kanter makes when she asserts:
"You'll never have time for art unless you claim the time."
This book shows one how to claim the time and then use it for the best use.
Excellent. Many of the reviews touch on the physical form of the book (lively, engaging writing style with adorable illustrations and lay-flat spiral binding) so beyond that, I won't say more. Let me add one thing, though - that this book is much more visually appealing, sensorially appealing - than I would have expected it to be.
Sort of like getting dessert for free that you didn't even order and because of this, magically has no calories. Yes, that about says it!
Got me going!.......2007-06-17
I love this book. It is beautifully illustrated and written. And, unlike the reviewer who felt it was limited to journals, I feel that it just made me want to be more creative generally. I started one of the exercises immediately, and I don't even have an art journal.
Great book for artists and amateurs.......2006-01-24
I am not an artist and did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Still, I am attached to this book because it is taking me on new journeys, helping me buy just the tools I need to create work in pencil, watercolor, pastel and other media. Although I have purchased other books on collages, painting and drawing, this one is my favorite.
creating desire.......2005-10-11
ms. kantor's exercises are so well explained that it just takes one read thru and you are there, getting your supplies and going at creating art. whether it be painting, sewing, writing, ms. kantor's eloquent descritions of the process of creating make you hungry for making more and not caring about the outcome but rather she makes you want to create--something that all artists' desire and she so well brings to the surface for discovery. the honesty and visual integrity of this book are fabulous.
Simplicity in Creativity.......2005-08-04
I read this book, bought my own sketchbook, and began to go through the exercises. With each exercise my own creativity was opened. I began to rely on my sketchbook for capturing my personal reflections as I went through my daily life. Eventually, I began to travel with my limited number of art supplies, as described in the book. Now wherever I go my impressions are captured. This art is private and therefore freeing. Great book! Liz Ross
Book Description
Now in Paperback "The practice of photography as we know it today would be all but inconceivable were it not for the remarkable innovations of Harold Edgerton."
-ARTnews A bullet seen the instant it explodes through an apple . . . a milk-drop splash transformed into a perfect coronet . . . a golf swing shown in a procession of exposures taken milliseconds apart0some of the world's most famous photographs were taken by Harold Edgerton, the late MIT scientist who invented the electronic flash. This great classic, first published in 1987 and now back in print in paperback, celebrates Edgerton's genius and his lasting influence on photography. More than 125 superbly reproduced plates illustrate the phenomenal range of his work, and Edgerton himself describes his efforts to capture the world in microseconds. Prizewinning author and photography historian Estelle Jussim discusses his profound legacy, and commentaries accompanying each plate explain the techniques used to create these exceptional images. HAROLD E. EDGERTON (1903-1990) was one of America's most acclaimed scientists, known not only for his high-speed flash photography but also for his lifelong explorations of underwater phenomena. He invented most of the sonar and camera equipment used by Jacques Cousteau and by the team that found the wreck of the Titanic. ESTELLE JUSSIM is photo historian emerita at Simmons College in Boston. GUS KAYAFAS was Edgerton's picture editor as well as his student. He is founder of the photography laboratory Palm Press, near Boston. 125 photographs, 25 in full color, 100 in duotone, 2 full-color gatefolds, 9 x 111/4"
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating photos.......2002-02-08
Many of these photos were familiar to me but I'd not realized all originated with the same person. The book is vaguely grouped into sports shots, everyday item shots, bullet shots, and high-tech science shots with other various photos strewn about.
I found the commentary on individual pictures to be informative and interesting. The introduction, however, seemed to wander into an essay about art movements in the mid-1900s and didn't provide information I wanted to know.
Overall this is a fascinating work to flip through.

Book Description
Three kids, stuck in a very bad situation, coming from different walks of life and different haunted pasts, end up in the same stolen car on the run from the law... and then things get a bit crazy. Angela was raised in a life of privilege, but things aren't always as pretty on the inside as they are on the outside. She carries a terrible secret that could ruin the whole facade, something even Damien-her hero, her angel, her object of romantic obsession-may not even know. He stumbled into her life by accident, and he hasn't been able to get out. And Raevyn? Just call it the wrong place at the wrong time, being up to no good in a no-good part of town. It's broken locks and screeching tires as sirens fade behind them. What lies ahead is a road full of amoral killers, a blood-hungry media, and mysterious men in overcoats and fedoras who always seem to be wherever the trio goes. Written and drawn by Eisner-nominee Arthur Dela Cruz. Check out his site at http://www.kissingchaos.com

Beautiful from cover to cover.......2003-08-18
This book blew me away. The art and storytelling are so complimentary, it makes the experience of reading this trade paperback truly amazing. The art was definitely the first aspect that drew me in, then the story pulled me closer and wouldn't let go. I highly recommend checking this out. Arthur Dela Cruz is a rare talent, this artist excells at more than one medium, and this read is surely proof of that. I found myself lingering on pages long after reading the words, taking in the art. Then, found myself later to be thinking about the words I had just read and considering all the twists and turns that had happened. Wonderful. Enjoy this book.
Beautiful Art and a Story Like No Other.......2003-08-09
This collection of Arthur Dela Cruz's Kissing Chaos series was a great read. The art pulled me in and the writing pulled me closer. I've always been a fan of "on the run" stories, and this book was no exception. Chances are, you haven't seen art like this much before. A combination of medias that when combined, made perfect sense. Keep your eyes open for the now available comic book entitled "Kissing Chaos-1000 Words". It continues the story of Damien & Angela and sheds new light on events from the first collection. I recommend this trade paperback 100%.
Beautiful Chaos.......2003-04-11
This is one of the most beautiful comics i have ever seen. ADC's use of grey's to create an almost surreal mood is wonderful. The story itself is also surreal, you never know what is really going on, kinda like watching a David Lynch movie. If you like Lynch, I suspect you'll like this too. Can't wait for the rest of the series' to come out, i can't wait to see where the road ends. I find ADC's website useful, [website] for when you want to find out info on the next series' and some samples from the book if you want to take a look. And if you want to get your girlfriend into comics, this is the perfect choice.
On the road to adventure.......2003-03-28
I remember hearing rumors about Kissing Chaos when it was first published. When Oni announced they were releasing a collection of the first series, I suddenly became entrenched in intrigue. I ran out and bought most of the issues, unable to wait for the trade. The story and art were fascinating. A great deal of the events and characters are shrouded in mystery, which adds a huge ammount to the epic nature of the tale. This collection is well-worth a close look. First, it collects the entire first storyarc into one book. Second, it has a bunch of backup stories orginally printed online and at conventions. It also features Dela-Cruz's sketchbook and a how-to on his coloring technique. Finally, the unique size of the graphic novel makes it look just like a paperback novel, so no one knows you're reading comics! I am in eager anticipation of the next collection.
Best Comic i've read in a while.......2003-03-28
I'm not a huge comic collector, but this stands out as the best series I own. The story is well written and the artwork is amazing, creating a great book about kids running away from the law. Reading it, you will get the feeling that this could be easily turned into a film, or be right out of a regular novel, which makes it great to buy even if you don't normally read comics or graphic novels. I'd highly recommend this to anyone, whether you own a huge collection of action comics and appreciate great graphic novels, or if you've never really liked comics and was looking to just start getting into them. After reading this one several times over, it seems clear that Arthur Dela Cruz will soon become a big name in the comic world.

King Kenny will never leave the hearts of Liverpool Fans!.......2001-03-01
This book is one of the best I have ever read. It gives you more information about him, more then the newspapers could give you in 5 years. He tells you about all the good times he had at Liverpool being both manager and player. Explaining some of the arguments as well. My dad has met Kenny in the late 70's. He went to go and watch Liverpool play and on the way home he got on the bus with the full squad. My dad also stayed with them and in the morning Kevin Keegan asked him to nip down to the chemist for him. So the helpful man my dad is he zoomed off to the chemist but only forgot the money!!! So he had to run all the way back for the money. Now back to Kenny Dalglish. The greatest footballer Liverpool have ever had. This book is one of a kind. I would reccommend anyone to buy this book.

A wake-up call to the Developed World!.......2001-04-11
Peter Dalglish is a visionary...there are no two ways about it. He has seen and experienced more in his lifetime than many of us ever will, and his story is one which every young person should read.
He has touched the lives of children from war-torn North Africa to the corrupt shanty towns of Bangkok--and in each he has made a fundamental difference in those children's lives. His contribution to social development is as far-reaching as any of the great figures in international affairs that may spring to mind, except he has achieved it on a small-scale, personal level.
I believe Mr. Dalglish has touched on a point that we should all take to heart: that those of us who have been fortunate enough to have the resources we do, have an OBLIGATION to give more to the lives of these impoverished children.
I commend Mr. Dalglish and think his book a fantastic reflection of a distinguished career of service.
A riveting read written by an inspirational man.........1999-01-31
I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did; I was interested to read it after hearing Peter Dalgleish speak. He is a charismatic, brilliant speaker and this book is equally riveting. A lawyer by training, Dalgleish was heading for the big salary, the luxury life. The book charts how he turned himself around and ended up using his characteristic drive and energy to help some of the world's poorest children. It will make you question the values of western society and it will make you realise that with energy and a determination, many things are indeed possible.
A fantastic and extraordinary look at the life of street kid.......1998-08-24
This book is touching and encouraging on all levels. It teaches the true meaning of many things, touching on the soul and heart. Definetly a must read.
A touching and courageous story.......1998-08-24
Peter Dalgish's book is one of the fantastic I have ever read. It is an emotional and touching story, no matter how sad or heart wrenching. But it also lets us believe in freedom and truth. Read this books!

Crown and Anchor.......2002-01-13
I enjoyed the intricate character desciptions and the way the author made you feel what the feeling. The plot of this book was not proped up by gratuitous sex and violence, instead the author used strong character developement and story line to envelope the reader.
