Book Description

The simple beauty of Japanese architecture and design has inspired many of the world's top architects and designers, such as Bruno Taut, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Terence Conran, to name just a few. The grace and elegance of the Japanese sensibility is reflected in both modern and traditional Japanese homes, from their fluid floor plans to their use of natural materials. In The Japanese House, renowned Japanese photographer Noboru Murata has captured this Eastern spirit with hundreds of vivid color photographs of 15 Japanese homes. As we step behind the lens with Murata, we're witness to the unique Japanese aesthetic, to the simple proportions modeled after the square of the tatami mat; to refined, rustic decor; to earthy materials like wood, paper, straw, ceramics, and textiles. This is a glorious house-tour readers can return to again and again, for ideas, inspiration, or simply admiration.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Low-budget color print.......2007-03-14

Don't expect much content in textual form. The book is a photo book, and there are many excellent pictures of japanese houses and interiors in terms of themes and photographical skill.

What is totaly contradictory to this, is the poor low-budget color printing chosen by Tuttle publishers. The pictures are devaluated by a easily seen coarse printing sreen.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures, but..........2007-01-20

Take the text with a huge grain of salt. It says nothing original about the Japanese aesthetic (terms like "elegant", "minimal" and "harmony with nature" abound); it contradicts itself on a few key points (is the half-height tea-house door for guests, or the host?); and in one caption it identifies a Go board as a "game of mah-jong". Oops.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful photos.......2007-01-09

I bought the book for inspiration in designing my retirement home. It is that. Lovely pictures and ideas for anyone interested in Japanese design.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2007-01-04

The photography is beautiful. This book shows the best of ancient and modern Japanese design concepts.

Japanese architecrure was firstly influenced American master architect----Frank Lloyd Wright, which you could occasionally find such trails of a natural simplicity acted super perfect in his mid-life works.Wright had using many of Japanese architectural tecniques within his residential projects:for example, the garden sitting, that he agreed traditional Japanese architectural philosophy-----the private garden may bestly mirrored owner's taste of life.Consquently,Wright was a picky architect that especially paying more attention on the rendering of a small enviroment.I am appreciated the choises of materials for Japanese architecture,no more greed, just got sufficient things they need, even for the palaces, still builded without any wasting,it must be hard to looking for another country to comparing with. The structures of Japanese architecture were mainly copied from China. In the same way,it added some new thing different with Chinese architecture.Like wells,beams,doors.lanterns...etc.,Japanese improved those details, and involved in their cultures. The architecture surely centered Eastern intelligence ,moreover, the love of the life.....

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Book.......2000-10-12

The book is Excellent. It is filled full of high color textures. This is one wonderful reference book for anyone interested in Japanese Architecture. The book is the closest thing to actually being in Japan and looking at the architecture on these buildings.

Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (4/07)

If your tastes run to something simple, but not austere, or if you simply love great design, do yourself a favor and get a copy of Saburo Yamagata's "The Japanese Home Stylebook." This is a visually stunning book, which will certainly be able to provide numerous ideas to anybody who is involved in design, home remodeling or interior decoration. Even architects and builders should be able to pick up many ideas from it.

The book consists mainly of pictorial material although Editor Peter Goodman provided some text explaining the basics behind the Japanese residential style and its elements. Starting with a basic Introduction, the book is further divided into chapters, each dealing with one of the elements. Each chapter starts with explanation of that element, followed by numerous drawings. The elements included are: Tokonoma and Shelves, Tatami Mats and Ceilings, Transoms, Fusuma, Shoji Screens, Windows, Doors, Railings and Verandas, Garden Fences and Paths and Decorative Patterns. If the 1800+ drawings found in this book are not enough to inspire you, the last chapter lists "Other Design Sources."

I found this book to be elegant and truly inspiring. My only regret is that there are no pictures of complete, finished rooms or houses, depicting the finished product. Maybe this opens the doors even wider for reader's own creativity and imagination...

I would recommend "The Japanese Home Stylebook" for anybody who deals with design, home building, or renovations.

5 out of 5 stars A seminal reference for architects, designers, builders and home remodelers.......2006-02-10

Saburo Yamagata (1911-1986) was a graduate of Kobe University, Japan, and a practicing architect. He drew from more than 1,800 designed from traditional Japanese homes to create The Japanese Home Style Book, a seminal reference for architects, designers, builders and home remodelers. Covering every element of traditional Japanese architectural design, the entries are systematically arranged for quick reference and easy of use. Included are paper-and-wood shoji screens; fusma sliding panels; door and window designs; tatami mat arrangements; decorated ceilings; latticed and carved transoms; tokonoma scroll alcoves; "staggered shelf" layouts; outdoor verandas and railings; garden fences and screens; as well as stepping-stone paths; decorative patterns and motifs for every purpose. The Japanese Home Style Book is a seminal contribution to professional and academic Architectural Studies and reference resource collections.

This book will be used by my builder for my new home. The photos are magnificent.

The display is exactly what I wanted him to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring for design from furniture to landscape.......2004-07-30

I have turned to this book for inspiration when designing interiors, cabinetry, furniture, fabric and landscape design, even graphic design. It is so flexible and easy to use. A good tool.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for woodworders, architects, landscape designers.......2004-01-12

Collection of clear drawings illustrating design elements, spatial composition (empty space as important as solid materials) instructive for artisans searching to solve design problems, or merely for inspiration in initiating a project.

Not a DIY text, rather a compact orderly selection of drawn images to stimulate creativity within the realm of your own talents and expertise. How you apply the ideas rests solely on what develops in your own mind as a result of viewing simple beauty before you.

George Lois was the genius graphic designer responsible for the legendary series of covers of Esquire magazine that were an icon-shattering and icon-defining commentary on the '60s. This collection of the best of those covers includes short anecdotes by Lois, but the chief interest is in the pictures he created. His covers were generally poster-like and free of excess words, and yet these pictures say plenty. The list of subjects is stellar: Marilyn Monroe, Norman Mailer, Muhammad Ali, Andy Warhol, Germaine Greer, and Richard Nixon. Sometimes the picture is a tease for the story within, sometimes it subverts it (as in the cover of a hangdog Roy Cohn with a ridiculous halo that accompanied a self-justifying piece written by Cohn). Only one of the covers reproduced here, a nude shot of Jack Nicholson, was cut before press time.

You'd certainly be doing yourself a favor by keeping your eyes on this up-and-coming young comics artist. His "Mother Come Home" was deeply affecting- enough so that I will most likely pick up his future works without even paging through them first. Having said that, this work is not essential. It is simply a collection of Hornschemeier's earlier, more immature work. It does reveal his future promise, and would be useful for charting the artist's evolution, but it is spotty. Borrow it from the library if you can.

                    Description:
A new attempt to characterize Hg speciation and to evaluate Hg mobility in soils was made by applying operationally defined speciation techniques coupled with fractionation of soil components to a soil sample collected just outside the Y-12 boundary of the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) site. The soil sample was fractionated based on redoximorphic features and particle size and a sequential extraction procedure and thermal desorption technique were then applied to the fractionated soil components. The redoximorphic concentration component was observed to have higher Hg concentrations than the redoximorphic depletion component in the soil, and fine particles contained higher concentrations of Hg compared with coarse particles. The preliminary results of using thermal desorption as well as the sequential extraction procedure suggested that Hg^0 and other ''easily'' vaporized Hg species accounted for 10-30% of total Hg in the soil. Sequential extraction analysis showed that both soluble and bioavailable Hg fractions were relatively small proportions whereas the organic matter bound mercury fraction constituted the major form of Hg species in the sample. The results suggest that Hg retained in the redoximorphic concentrations was less volatile and labile than Hg in the redoximorphic depletions possibly due to the strong binding affinity of Fe/Mn oxides and organic matter to Hg.

                      Description:
Sequential rain collections were carried out for 93 rainfall events, with samples of 1mm of precipitation. A total of 29 major and trace elements and major anions were determined for each fraction. The scavenging properties of these elements with rainfall depth were well approximated by a power law C=aR"t^-^b, rather than an exponential law C=C"0exp[-@l^*R"t], where C is the concentration of a trace element in rain, C"0 is the initial concentration, R"t is rainfall depth, a and b are empirical constants and @l* is the scavenging coefficient. We propose a power exponent b as a scavenging index that is the slope of linear approximation of the logC versus logR"t plot and represents degree of scavenging efficiency. Elements such as Na, Mg, Ca, Sr, which are predominantly from natural sources, had large b values and were efficiently scavenged by raindrops, while elements such as Zn, Cu, Se, Sb, which are predominantly from anthropogenic sources, had intermediate b values and were scavenged less efficiently than natural source elements. On the other hand, Sn had a distinctly small b value compared to the other elements. The scavenging index b values correlate well with the aerodynamic diameter of aerosols that bear the respective elements. The size of aerosols bearing Sn could be extremely small, down to 0.05@mm.

4 out of 5 stars Alphabetically arranged memoir........2002-03-27

Intended for limited circulation among family and friends, David Waters' autobiographical essays are, nonetheless, well worth reading, even if you've never met the man. For one thing, the short essays give a model of how one might go about writing one's own memoirs. For another, David Waters has been places and done things that are interesting in themselves and, here, well-described.
