Book Description
David Hovey is building some of the best modernist houses in the world, and the world is starting to notice. Hovey has made a name for himself as the torchbearer for modern residential design, a designation he shares with a growing number of architects who've returned to pure modernism. His houses merge into the landscapes in which they're situated, and with names like Cloud Chaser and Rain Maker, their ties to the land and climate are made clear. Hovey picks up where Frank Lloyd Wright left off, forging ahead with explorations of simple materials, rectilinear geometries, and structural innovation all in the service of free-flowing floor plans that merge indoor and outdoor into a cohesive whole. An extensive essay examines Hovey's unorthodox approach to architecture and explains how he has managed to build a successful career by staying true to his modernist ideals.

How artists see work.......2000-03-27
It was a very informative book.
Book Description
If you're looking for an easy way to find photos on your PC, make a few editing fixes, and then share your images with others, look no further. Picasa, available as a free download from Google.com, makes it easy to instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures in seconds and sorts them into albums. From there, you can apply basic edits to your photos, burn them to CD, post them on your blog, or email them to friends. In this colorful, compact guide, author Steve Schwartz starts at the beginning, walking readers through the Picasa interface and showing readers how to set preferences. From there, he launches into the heart of this book, offering project-based instruction for organizing, viewing, and editing your photos, and then shows you how to use Picasa's built-in tools to print, email, or order professional prints of your images. In addition, readers will learn how to share their photos instantly with Hello, Picasa's free instant messaging software. Throughout the book, full-page, full-color screen shots and simple, step-by-step instructions lead readers through several projects, such as saving an image to the Windows desktop, creating a screensaver, making movies, generating photo-based Web pages, running a slideshow, and creating posters, collages, and contact sheets.
Customer Reviews:
Very Basic.......2007-05-09
I returned this book. Picasa is so easy to use that few people will need a Visual Quick Start Guide. The Quick Start series is good but this program just doesn't warrant a guide at all.
Organizing and Editing Your Photos with Picasa.......2006-03-19
I am new to digicams and got hooked on the freebie Picasa program from Google almost right from the start. Picasa handled and organized all of my pictures quite well--until I had 1000 pictures from a vacation to print out.
I didn't want to use Picasa's on line printing services cuz I have a local Costco that will give me my picture, inexpensively, in one hour. But I could not figure out how to get my corrected computer pixes to Costco. The book did answer my question of how to make a CD--with the desired corrected images--and I took the CD to Costco.
That explanation alone did the trick and made the book purchase easily worthwhile. There are lots of other things that the program will do and I learned them on my own, but for others, the book would really help to get your pictures up and running.
I am still low on the digicam learning curve and decided to test PhotoShop Elements(PSE). I have taken local Adult Ed classes to learn that program. Thus, I have integrated the two programs by using PSE to correct using the clone tool and then organizing and making quickie corrections in Picasa and then making a CD to take to Costco. That's the way I do it.

Extremely Funny.......2001-01-09
Ruthie, the precocious little girl, is one of the funniest cartoon characters to be created in some time. Between her massacring of the English, commanding attitude and hysterics, you will laugh every time you read a strip with her in it. The other characters, her parents, her older brother Joe and her grandparents are also well drawn and funny. Rose, the grandmother, is particularly snide and funny. One Big Happy is the best new cartoon since Bloom County & Calvin & Hobbes debuted in the 80's.
Cute........2000-08-13
Do you know why the title, "One Big Happy" hesitates at one more word? Because this family is not always perfect, that's why. But it's still an adorable little strip all about patient parents trying to put up with the bratty antics of the spoiled little Ruthie and her smart-aleck mouth. But at least Ruthie is funny sometimes while the icky princessy little April from "For Better Or For Worse" is NOT! Dimple-cute humor and nice cartoony art.
Surely the best comic strip artist working.......2000-02-18
Rick Detorie is surely the best artist working in the medium of daily comic strip. No one gets better facial expressions. And generally no one writes a funnier situation. With the very sad departure of both Charles Schulz and his strip "Peanuts," my vote for the replacement is -- obviously "One Big Happy." As an avid collector of cartoons, I rank this strip one of my favorites of all time.
RICK DETORIE IS A CARTOONING GENIUS.......1999-08-10
I read this book to my son every night before he goes to bed. It never fails to make us laugh. Ruthie is hysterical and I think Rick Detorie is the most underrated cartoonist. Buy this book. You'll love it.
Hilarious!.......1999-07-01
I LOVED this book! Rick Detorie is definitely my favorite author. The illustrations are great, I was reading on the train ride home and I could not help but laugh out loud at times, people must have thought I was a nut! But the book is great to read, Ruthie & Joe are too cute as well as James!
Book Description
This richly illustrated, thoroughly researched and completely unauthorized biography takes readers behind the legend of the great Gordie Howe. Signed by the Detroit Red Wings at 16, Gordie became a six-time leading scorer, a six-time Hart Trophy winner as the most valuable player, and he surpassed Rocket Richard’s NHL goals record to reach an amazing total of 801 — unmatched for years until Gretzky finally caught up to his mentor and idol. Gordie also includes a new introduction in this recreation of the glory of hockey's golden age.

A GREAT HOCKEY BOOK.......2006-03-13
Gordie a Hockey Legend is book is a great book for anyone who knows about hockey and what the sport is and how it has evolved for its early stages with the popular players like Gordie Howe, He really set the bar in hockey back in his days. He held the NHL scoring title with the most goals in his career with 801 goals until "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky passed him in April of 1993.Gordie is really a Hockey legend.
Gordie is really a legend. He was Known for his ability to be tough anytime during a game, and get the goals, and stand up for his team at anytime needed. This Book was really good in my view. It described his great career, and his life leading up to and being in the NHL.
I would recommend this book to a lot of my friends, especially to my friends that like, and or play hockey. This book really shows the meaning for, and how hockey started to become more popular especially in the United States and in Canada. I really liked this book, and it is one of my favorites, and I would recommend it to anyone. This is truly a great book.
Gordie Howe.......2002-11-21
Gordie Howe: A hockey legend tells about his whole life. From when he was little kid, to when he made it in the NHL. It tells about how he first came upon hockey as a little kid. It tells about his carrer and the NHL. I thought that this book was ok. Not horrible but not excellent. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about gordie howe, or wants to read about him.
A Great Book on Gordie Howe!.......2000-03-22
This book tells about Gordie Howe, one of the best hockey players ever, and his career in the NHL.In the beginning, it tells about his first couple of seasons, and then tells more about his great career and facts about him toward the end. I learned a lot about him from this book, for example, I learned that he has played for two teams, the Hartford Whalers and the Detroit Red Wings, and that he was considered one of the greatest players of his time.
An enthralling look at professional hockey's past, and stars.......1999-06-04
As a lifetime fan of the Detroit Red Wings, I was overjoyed when I found that there is a recent biography of Howe that is much more up to date than many written in the 60's and 70's. This book gives the reader an inside look at what it was like to get into the NHL in the 50's, and what it took to stay there and become a star. Mackskimming is very candid when talking about the front office's team management "politics" The reader also gets an up-close look at other great stars of the era such as Red Kelly, Ted Linsay, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, and coach Jack Adams. A must read for any TRUE hockey fan.
Starts out great, but ends up only a good book on Howe........1998-09-11
The book starts out covering Howe in excellent detail. Several pages cover his first seasons. Then as if the author lost interest, the decades go flying by. My reasons for reading the book was to find out, why Howe was considered great, how Howe compared to Richard, how the game changed over the years and what it was about Howe that enabled him to play for so long. The book only addressed how Howe established his early greatness.
Book Description
Like baseball's New York Yankees and basketball's Boston Celtics, hockey's Montreal Canadiens are the most storied franchise in their sport. This lavishly illustrated look at Montreal's hockey heroes from 1909 to 2004 also includes guest essays by Dave Stubbs, Frank Orr, and Red Fisher.

CANUCKS FAN.......2007-08-15
LOVE THE BOOK. RECIEVED INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEAM THAT I DID NOT KNOW.
I HATE THAT SOME PAGES THAT HAVE WORDS WRITTEN ON THEM HAVE A DARK COLORING AS A BACKGROUND. HARD TO PICK UP THE WORDS ON THOSE PAGES

A must read about one of the all time greats of Hockey!.......1999-01-30
Mark Messier (Ice Hockey Legends) is a suprisingly informative book that takes an in-depth look at the career of one of sports must decorated champions. From his days in Edmonton, were Messier won 5 Stanley Cups, to his Stanley Cup season as a New York Ranger this book is a wonderful read!
One of the must exciting aspects of the book, are the actually quotes from Messier himself. It really adds to the diversity of the book and shows the type of character & leadership that Messier is so famous for. As for the pictures themselfs, I very impressed! They are black & white, but that does not diminish the book in anyway and there are some great shots of Messier from his earlier days as an Oiler.
Bottom line. Get the the book, it truely is a great read! Messier is without question one of the all time great leaders and champions of any sport!
