Book Description

A glorious survey of English Regency architecture, superbly illustrated with 200 color and duotone photographs drawn from the archives of COUNTRY LIFE magazine.

This latest volume in the acclaimed Country Life series examines the English country house from 1800 to 1830, looking in turn at the buildings associated with the Prince Regent himself, from Brighton Pavilion to Buckingham Palace; at the houses of the aristocracy, such as Eastnor Castle and Goodwood; and at the homes of the gentry, including Southill in Befordshire and Luscombe in Devon. The architects whose work is featured in The Regency Country House include the Wyatt dynasty, Henry Holland, John Nash, C.R. Cockerell, Robert Smirke, William Wilkins, Thomas Hopper, Humphrey Repton, and Sir John Soane. The book also looks at important architectural themes of the period, from the development of the Greco-Roman style to the Gothic Revival and Picturesque. A breathtaking volume, illustrated! with 200 color and duotone photographs. John Martin Robinson is a leading architectural historian, whose previous books include The Wyatts: An Architectural Dynasty and The Country House at War.

This book is what is promised, a great coffee table read and a satisfying way to spend an afternoon. Great fun to review places to visit and re-visit whilst examining English estates and architecture. This book showed several features to incorporate in a home setting. The photography and lighting are well-done. I wish there had been more color photos and more images, preferably more from each region of England and Wales. We'll keep this book. The book arrived with excellent speed and reasonable price from Ya Ya Coburn.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, inspirational, breath-taking!.......2007-06-13

This is a beautiful coffee table book. Lavishly beautiful photographs featuring the stately homes of the British aristocracy, gentry and the Royal Family.

My only complaint is that some of the photographs are not colorized and there weren't enough photographs of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Palace, both beautiful Royal palaces in their own right.

I give this book 5-stars because it's an entertaining read and gives you a wonderful insight of living life like a nobleman/woman or better yet Royalty and the colorized photographs are breath-taking!

5 out of 5 stars LATE GEORGIAN LUX.......2006-03-08

Regency Architecture is so elegant and these houses just exude class. George IV, the regent, was a debauched libertine, but the man had taste and it is shown in his fabulous Brighton Pavilion. This really was a golden age in British Country House design, these huge estates are tasteful and much like Louis XIV is to Louis XV, Regency is to George III, it's a bit less extravagant, but still regal and elegant. This book does a fine job taking from the great County Life Magazine, the black and white images are supurb and the text very interesting and informative. If you have any interest in Regency architecture or just like looking at elegant estates, then I believe you will not be disappointed in this wonderful book.

Book Description

There's a trick to painting realistic subject matter without including every last little detail. It's this "soft realism" approach to colored pencil that Ann Kullburg shares in her insightful new technique book.

Kullberg teaches artists how to faithfully capture the essence of any subject without wasting time on excessive detail work. Step by step she presents 35 popular subjects and describes techniques for adding rich texture, depth and form in the most simple and straightforward way possible. Insights on getting a realistic effect include: • Mapping out a complex subject to make it easier to paint • Changing pencil strokes to create different textures • Mixing hues for greater visual interest • Creating softer, more natural edges by varying the pressure of the pencil It's all the instruction a colored pencil artist needs to effortlessly add gorgeous details to every piece they create.

5 out of 5 stars This artist has an incredible technique.......2007-03-30

This book is beautiful, full of great step by step information, color recipe information, and tips for beginners to advanced. A keeper!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-14

I really like a lot of her techniques. They are easy to follow and very basic. Her books are good starting books. I have found others to show more techniques too that are great. It's just good to have a variety, since many artists have varying approaches. I basically will go with colored pencil artists whose work is excellent. I will not buy a book by an artist who does crappy art work, even if the techniques are great according to other readers. To me if the techniques are great, so would be the artwork.

5 out of 5 stars Still angry but forgiving.......2007-02-11

This is an excellent book EXPLAINING matters of colored pencil. It's a wonderful "how to" book and you won't find a great CP artist that Kullberg. However, I'm one of those people she elludes to in this book about her first book and the misunderstandings developed from it. Many people thought that non-human objects in CP would be created just as she outlined in her first book. They aren't! Obviously, the misunderstanding was quite a problem or it would have taken up so much real estate in this second book.
Nevertheless, she is giving and generous in her approach to sharing her passion in this work. Most people familiar with Ann Kullberg will own both books anyway so, it's just a matter of some unfortunate re-arranging and adjustment. That said, this book is proof that even the most humble of artistic instruments become tools of art on the walls in Heaven from a master's hand. Ann is that Master with Colored Pencil. One item not covered in the book is that the thoughts and concepts here in CP do somewhat transfer to the world of Acrylics. She wouldn't be the first CP artist to discover this but, I believe if she did, she would soon become the best. Of all the Italian Masters, she reminds me most of Leonardo Divinci with her vent on translucent layering. Not a bad idea, adapting the techniques of someone like that. You should own this book. I even bought the products she recommends and I've been WOWed! Now, that rarely happens. Good book, good teacher... can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Art.......2006-11-05

Ann Kullberg's art is stunning. She openly shares her techniques in her books. Her books are so good that I intend to take a colored pencil workshop from her when she's in my area.

Book Description

Diane Arbus (1923-1971) is renowned for her provocative and unsettling portraits of modern Americans. This book presents a significant body of previously unpublished pictures by Arbus and proposes a radically new way to understand her goals, strategies, and overall work. Diane Arbus: Family Albums examines unknown contact sheets from several of Arbus's portrait sessions, including more than three hundred photographs she took of a New York family one weekend in 1969. Anthony W. Lee and John Pultz put to the test Arbus's claim that she was developing a "family album." They present other images Arbus shot for Esquire magazine (including pictures of the families of Ricky Nelson, Jayne Mansfield, and Ogden Reid) and discuss her interest in photographic groupings of both traditional and alternative families. Challenging common interpretations of Arbus, the authors reveal a photographer far more savvy with the camera, more aware of photography as an artistic and commercial practice, and more sensitive to the social and cultural tensions of the 1960s than has been acknowledged before.

1 out of 5 stars Academic nonsense.......2007-01-03

Two associate professors of art history want to climb the academic career ladder. My oh my, what are they to do? Wait! Zounds! Eureka! Someone has found some contact sheets from a private shooting assignment done by - gasp! - Diane Arbus.

We have the photos! We have a hall! Let's mount an exhibition! By Jove, let's write an essay! Two essays because there are two academics struggling for advancement.

And so it is done. An exhibition. A book to commemorate the exhibition.

And two of the most bizarre, sophmoric, empty-headed art history essays you can imagine. Sophistry of the first order as these two try to make academic hay on a dead photographer.

The photos, most by Arbus, occupy only about half the book. And they are all to be seen elsewhere in more congenial settings. ("Diane Arbus: Revelations," for example.)

The essays are just plain ridiculous. Stereotypical academic writing. Diane Arbus was a good photographer, skilled at capturing otherwise ordinary people in unexpected or odd poses. Had she missed the critical instant in most cases, the photo she is famous for would have been missed. The same can be said of Henri Carier-Bresson in a way, but Arbus was more prone to setting her subjects up, while Cartier-Bresson photographed the moment. Arbus also made heavy use of the unflattering aspects of newly introduced portable electronic flashes to add a harsh edge to her photos which also made her subjects appear unnatural.

But these two academics, Anthony W. Lee and John Pultz, roll out all the holies of left-wing academia. The "youth rebellion" of the 60s. Gay liberation. Emancipated women. You name the left-wing cause and it gets at least one mention in their respective essays. Arbus becomes not merely a photographer, but a social prophet. (I suspect the authors may have seen one too many performances of "Mother Courage".)

Not content with merely turning Arbus into a latter day Nostrodamus, they then proceed to channel themselves into the dead Arbus (a suicide at age 48) and tell us what her last great work would have been, had she not killed herself. They also use these psychic projections for more ruminations on the death of the family.

It felt like my jaw hung open while I read both these essays in full. Like passing an auto accident, I was transfixed, wanting to see what the next horror would be. Believe me, there is no shortage of the horror of vapid intellectual posturing in these two essays. Trees should have been saved rather than wasted in the printing of this academic emptiness.

The only redeeming feature is the production of some of the contact sheets from this 1969 Arbus family portrait shoot. But even that is minimized by the moody, dark printing of the pages. Oh, the drama, the drama! (I must point out that one of the authors is shown on his web page dressed in black; no doubt to make it impossible to non-conformist, artistic spirit.)

This is really an awful thing to have done to Diane Arbus. Her work is strong enough to stand on its own, without this empty-headed academic blather. Anyone who truly appreciates and respects the work of Diane Arbus is better advised to look elsewhere.

As the god of death, Tsuzuki has a lot to think about. First of all, there are all those dead people. Someone's got to escort them safely to the afterlife. Then there's all that bureaucracy. The affairs of death come with a lot of paperwork, budgetary concerns and endless arcana. Combining supernatural action with heavy dollops of romance, sex and humor, Descendants of Darkness proves one thing: Death is big business...and business is good!

5 out of 5 stars Not the end?.......2006-10-27

According to the infamous Wikipedia there just might be a 12th volume. The mangaka went on haiatus in 2001 from this serties & hasn't made a manga since. My personal guess is that the original Japanese publishers are pressuring her to pick up the series again now that they're making forign profit through Viz off the series. The exact same thing happened to the Aoike Yasuko whom made the Eroica manga; 7 year haiatus on book 19, now on book 33.
Hopefully the series will extend beyond a 12th book & like Patalliro, get a second TV series to boot. Oh yeah, & there's a raunchy yaoi scene at the end between unfamiliar characters. The series gets progressively BL.

5 out of 5 stars Volume 3: "The Sword of K".......2006-08-31

I had a few doubts as to whether I was going to like this series at first, but Vol. 3 dispelled them. This was a VERY good story; intense, dramatic, and well told. If you were only to get ONE book from the 11-part series, this would be it. Though of course you should also at least get Book 1, which introduces the characters and the situation presented here.

The (delightful) hero is Tsuzuki, a "shinigami" or Guardian of Death, who is dispatched by the Judgement Bureau of the Minstry of Hades to investigate what appear to be vampire attacks aboard a luxury cruise liner. The focus of the story is Hizoka, Tsuzuki's young partner, who once again comes face to face with - er - the guy on the cover (I don't want to spoil or anything). The story follows up on what was revealed about these characters in Volume 1, but where DoD1 just sort of threw the information at us, here we have intense character development combined with a well constructed mystery story.

DoD is supernatural horror. It is lurid, psychologically murky, and has adult themes. The deep affection and respect between the heroes stands out against this dark milieu, and makes for the major attraction of the series.

        5 out of 5 stars random reveiw.......2006-07-03

This is is a good book, keeps you laughing each time you read it

5 out of 5 stars Descedants Of Darkness... Ends All To Quickly.......2006-05-11

I've loved Descendants of Darkness ever since I saw the anime a few years ago. (And I am a guy, by the way. I waited forever for the manga to come out, and even bought the Japanese version a few years ago off Ebay. (Though I can't read kanji...) I am glad it finally came out in English, but unfortunately Vol. 11 is the last. The author never finished the stories and kinda left us all hanging. Unfortunately a lot of great anime do this, including X/1999.

DOD is a great fantasy shojo and is worth reading. Tsuzuki is one of my all time favorite anime/manga characters, and I hope someday the story will be finished... but I'm not holding my breath.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond the Anime.......2006-02-25

As fans may know, the defeat of Muraki, which is the finish of the anime is not the last story in the manga series.
In this new story arc, Hisoka decides to get his own Shiki (the twelve creatures that guard Tsuzuki are called Shiki in the manga, their name is slightly different in the anime). Of course, Tsuzuki volunteers to help him get one,so Tsuzuki takes Hisoki to the Shiki world and of course, they get lost!
If that is not enough, another new story line with Tatsumi and Watari begins. Because Tsuzuki and Hisoka are on this quest,
Tatsumi has to investigate Hisoka's family (the case is not explained yet), something which he grumbles about, since he hasn't led an investigation in 50 years.
We learn that the Shiki live in something called the Imaginary World located in cyberspace (there's an explanation why it is where it is). We see the White Tiger's and Touda's human form, plus other shiki not yet really introduced. We learn a bit more about Tsuzuki's relationship with Touda and how a deal is struck with the creatures of this world.
This is a pretty enjoyable manga as a whole, I'm looking forward to how these two stories play out.

1 out of 5 stars I am very surprised at the 5 star rating of this book.......2005-12-06

I read this book and found it boring at times and inconsistent in terms of how it flowed. I think the mix of Afghan womens stories and American activists stories being compiled in one book was a good idea. The book did not spark interest in me and didn't fully grasp my attention the way other books have or Afghan women that I have met in real life have. In my opinion it was poorly written:(

4 out of 5 stars great small essays on the tradgedy and hopes for afghanistan.......2005-01-06

i was kind of surprised to find that the overall rating for this book is a 5 star rating.
i thoroughly applaud all the contributors in the book for their statements and facts on afghanistan. i also applaud w.a.w., which also has a site on the web for anyone wanting to help further or read more. they are doing an immense job of bringing people the truth about afghanistan, and helping those in need. alongside rawa they are one of the groups in the u.s. who is making a big difference in the perceptions and misperceptions people have about afghanistan and the severity of life that people face there, in pakistan as well, particularly the women.
the book was rather slow-moving for me as it was many small accounts of what is wrong, what was right, and how to help. because i am already well-informed and helping in certain ways, i found it to be repetitive information. the reason i would recommend this book, is because the group is wonderful and people should be aware of who they are and what they are doing, and 2nd- if you are NOT well-informed about islam, afghanistan, and the history or politics involved in creating the current situation, then this will enlighten you in a simple and easy way as to what these people have gone through good and bad, and the hopes people have for the future. it offers things we in the u.s. need to do and should do in terms of assistance and support. it lets you read opinions and facts through a variety of sources, rather than one authors opinion throughout the entire book.

        5 out of 5 stars Sisters unite!.......2003-01-15

If the women in Afghanistan are not going to live free in the near future, every one of us is guilty! If girls are dying because they are girls WE have blood on our hands - every single one of us! We can stop it, if we unite and if every one of us is AWARE and WILLING to put an end to this! No woman in the western world can tell HER daughters...... I did not know! The book WOMEN FOR AFGHAN WOMEN is a brutal documentary but written with a tender heart and endless love. Read, learn & act! The strongest wapon against OPPRESSION is: EDUCATION!... go and spread the word!

5 out of 5 stars Wet Burqa Contest.......2002-12-07

Well, you won't be seeing one of those in Kabul anytime soon (see childish review title, above). Which is, in a sense, one of the scant but meaningful advantages enjoyed by women in conservative societies, as the voices in this insightful book make abundantly clear. If 'liberation' means appearing on the cover of "Maxim" clad in a thin veneer of Silly String, many would think twice about buying into the modernity that we're peddling. This insightful book elicited a passel of new notions in me about the need for enlightened relativism when comparing modern and traditional societies. All of which were moderated abruptly when I shared them with my wife - who herself was recently 'liberated' from the beaches of Punta Del Este, where the garb of most Maxim girls would be dismissed as laughably prim. Her predictable response was to christen me 'Mullah Charles' and to withhold her affections from me for a week - a modern Lysistrada, albeit one without a Peloponnesian War to stop. My bumbling attempt at atonement - trying to assert my modernity by boorishly commenting that author Mehta looked "rather hot" in her inset photo - only proved to both of us that I have plenty to learn about women from my own hemisphere, never mind the other one.

5 out of 5 stars the view of afghan women.......2002-11-22

I recently read this book and was most impressed by the honesty of many of the Afghan women, as well as the essays which clarified what the Q'uran says about women. As far as Islam goes, it is very important to make a distinction between theology and culture. Many of the things that that non-Muslims view as unacceptable (with respect to women)in the Muslim world are based on cultural practices not the Q'uran. Afghan women have been clear in this book in stating that although they want the support of women worldwide, that they must be the ones to determine the direction of the women's movement in Afghanistan. It is critical to the sucess of such a movement that it develop within a cultural and religious framework that is appropriate to them. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Kabul from 1977-79 and hold both Afghanistan and it's people close to my heart. We must support their efforts toward rebuilding their country, but remember, it is their country!

3 out of 5 stars I haven't believed in reincarnation since my previous life.......2005-01-06

This isn't a bad introduction to the subject for those with little previous exposure to it. It's based on the teachings of Edgar Cayce, which might have been a serious problem: Cayce was an extraordinary medical clairvoyant, but a lot of his predictions haven't come true and his historical pronouncements on Atlantis have to be taken on faith. He spoke in a kind of pseudo-Biblical gibberish which I find irritating and which poor Ms. Sparrow must constantly "interpret."

Nevertheless, the ideas discussed by the author generally accord with those of mediums, theosophists, and some psychical researchers. She clearly links reincarnation with the concepts of karma and divine grace, and makes a good case that they must be understood if the principle of reincarnation is to be grasped.

She meets head-on the main objections to the possibility of reincarnation, and although she doesn't disprove them, which could hardly be expected from anyone, she weighs them intelligently. Sparrow avoids extravagant New Age pronouncements, and her tone is straightforward, logical and full of common sense (if it is possible to speak of common sense in connection with reincarnation).

Readers who are already acquainted with the essential ideas about how reincarnation is said to work and would like a more pragmatic approach are directed to the books of Helen Wambach, who has done extraordinary research in subjecting many individuals' hypnotically induced recollections of previous lives to statistical and historical analysis.

4 out of 5 stars Inspired me to read more.......1999-09-26

This was the first book on reincarnation I have ever read and it was a great start. Edgar Cayce was the founding father of metaphysics in the West and, therefore, a perfect basis for a beginner. I learned the facts I needed to know and the places I needed to go next in order to explore my interests and beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars Ever wonder why rotten stuff happens to good people?.......1999-03-04

There is a reason why two-thirds of our planet's population believes in and embraces reincarnation. Although it's been centuries in coming, Westerners are beginning to accept this "philosophy" as truth, as well.

If you've ever been curious about reincarnation on any level, this book will serve as an excellent introduction to this phenomenon. Elwell Sparrow's clearly-written book is based upon the readings and teachings of world-reknown psychic Edgar Cayce, himself a Christian. However, if you are of a different faith or spiritual belief, do not let that disuade you from reading this book!

After reading this moving, exciting book, many of your questions will be answered. This is a highly informative book, and at its conclusion, you may find that reincarnation (at its most fundamental level) is the fascinating commonality among the world's religions and peoples.

I highly recommend it! It changed my outlook on life forever.

From the supplier: The future of elementary school children especially 4th- and 5th-graders remains uncertain given the lack of efforts to improve elementary education. This situation is illustrated in the plight of one 5th-grader who qualified for the gifted program. Her trials include a gifted class which is held only once a week, the indifference of teachers, lack of computer facilities in her building and absence of a parent-teacher association in the school.
