Book Description
Thinking about church architecture has come to an impasse. Reformers and traditionalists are talking past each other. Statements from both sides are often strident and dogmatic. In Theology in Stone, Richard Kieckhefer seeks to help both sides move beyond the standoff toward a fruitful conversation about houses of worship. Drawing on a wide range of historical examples with an eye to their contemporary relevance, he offers refreshing new ideas about the meanings and uses of church architecture. Kieckhefer begins with four chapters on the basic elements of church architecture-the overall arrangement of space, the use of an altar or pulpit as a centering focus, the aesthetics of church design, and the functions of sacred symbols. He goes on to offer three extended historical studies, dealing with churches of medieval England, revival-style churches of America, and modern churches of twentieth-century Germany. Drawing on these case studies, he concludes with a vision of a new theology of church architecture--historically grounded, yet framed for our own time. Examining church architecture from the third century to the twenty-first, Theology in Stone is a thoughtful, fresh, and informative work that addresses questions vital to the present while shedding a great deal of light on the past. The conception of church architecture that emerges is one that moves beyond the polemics of the "worship wars" to embrace the best of both the traditional and the modern.

Ex cathedra.......2005-09-18
Perhaps it is because I come from the same background (Western Anglo-Catholic) as the approach from which Richard Kieckhefer comes in this text that I find such a resonance with what he has to say. 'Theology in Stone' looks at various aspects of church design, from the long tradition of church building in Christianity up to the present time. His text begins with four principle factors in basic church design, and then looks in some detail at three particular styles.
The four factors highlighted are not typical architectural concerns, but rather wrapped up in spiritual, theological, and aesthetic values. How does the space work? What is the central and centering focus? Is there an aesthetic impact compatible with the intention of the church? How do symbols function and resonate? There are no universal answers to these types of questions. As Kieckhefer states, 'Response to a church [is] conditioned by culture and by cultural interaction.' Response is also related to expectations, usefulness, the people populating the church, and a number of other concerns. However, perhaps most importantly, response to a church is a learned process that generally 'requires informed reflection. The meanings of a church are seldom obvious.'
With regard to spatial dynamics and centering focus, Kieckhefer states, the purpose of the building is expressed. The symbolic resonance goes to the meaning of the church, and the aesthetic impact relates to the form. Kieckhefer takes classic church architecture ideas and applies them not to the task of planning and building a church as much as to understanding how the buildings function and have meaning for those who use them now. Kieckhefer also differentiates between the issue of what a church has meant and what a church can mean.
The churches Kieckhefer highlights include Beverly Minster, a church in the then second city of York (York, of course, being the second city, ecclesiastically speaking, of England, after Canterbury). The examination of this church, along with others, takes into account the surrounding community, the geography of the church's placement, and the population that peoples the church. 'The meaning of church architecture can never be read in abstraction from local ethos,' Kieckhefer states. This is also true of Chicago, where there is about as diverse a collection of churches as anywhere else on the planet. Still, there are discernable patterns here, according to Kieckhefer. 'There were three basic approaches to liturgical space in these churches: the design of Roman Catholic churches was appropriate mainly for intercession, that of Protestant churches for proclamation, and that of Eastern Orthodox churches for meditation.' Kieckhefer examines here the churches of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, 'a time just before the rise of architectural modernism and liturgical reform.' Kieckhefer's third area of discussion focuses upon the work of Rudolf Schwarz, whose strong, simple designs rely on reinterpretations of classic architectural ideas and embraces liturgical principles both ancient and modern.
Kieckhefer concludes the book with a dicussion of modern issues, doing significant theological reflection, including the tension between modern and traditional designs (both from intention and actual application), movements toward increased congregational participation, and other pulls between orthodoxy and dogmatism (which Kieckhefer describes as being opposites for his purposes here). He sees great resilience in the past, which can give new life and freedom to modern designs.
Kieckhefer writes well, and his arguments are interesting to follow. They tend toward the sacramental side, but has a healthy respect for different views in his presentation. His endnotes are helpful and worthwhile, but a bibliography (even as a simple list) would be helpful. There is a good index, and a number of black-and-white photographs (most done by Kieckhefer himself).
This is a text that will be of interest beyond the architectural crowd, but to any who seek to understand the way in which church architecture has meaning and can mean for the community.
Stone by Stone.......2005-08-22
Kieckhefer has done an admirable job trying to create a convincing scholarly narrative for the evolution of church architecture. This work adds to the growing body of texts on religious architecture and stands as an important contribution to the field. My reservations about the book come from its lackluster choice of "illustrative" examples. Kieckhefer has a wealth of examples to choose from and rather than picking the rule picks the exception. This demonstrates the valuable spirit of experimentation and development the field has come to expect of architects, but only scratches the surface of the wealth of architectural patterns that are evident today.

Great Foundation Excellent Presentation.......2007-07-15
Good bones, that's what this book gave me. It was my first or second and what a good model to imprint on.
Clear, comprehensive, it established good practice that has served me well.
I am apart from it and returned to its words and images in my mind.
If you already know the basics and have an esthetic vision, this may be old news. If you are a beginner, then this should be part of your canon.
The tone, comfortable, practical and the projects are well paced.
It's now old and the field is crowded with both imitators and those reaching beyond this. It remains solid and nourishing. Thank you Helen Clegg for your good thoughts and inspiration.
Wire Jewelry Projects.......2007-03-17
An excellent book for the beginner or intermediate wire jewelry maker. Beautful pictures of the finished piece and step by step instructions including "templates" to compare your wire pieces as you progress.
Wired, wire and more wire.......2007-03-01
This is going to be one that is passed around, copied and talked about for years to come. Yes it is a beginners book, but don't let that stop you from getting this one to add to the shelf near the bench for ready reference. It has nice larger black line drawings showing clear step by step drawing of each move. It doesn't require purchase of a lot of tools, that most will have in the house. The material can be simple electrical wire that you have stripped the covering off to start with. Or leave the palstic covering on for colored work.
The pictures of the finished items are bright and clear. The projects are more for daily wear and some for fancy dress up. You will find the needed info to make any jigs for the component making. I am partial to what they now call Egyptian coils or Celtic twist/coils of copper bare wire.
If you have moved on from simple wire work with only connections made of the wire work. You will find this book a shot in the creative arm. I own this one and enjoy it.
A Must Have for your wirewrapping/jewerly making.......2005-06-06
This is really a must have book for your library of wirewrapping, jewerly making and polymer clay.I really find myself referring to it a lot when I need insperation in beginning new projects..Im not one to follow step by step.but this can be followed very easily, but its good for just adding here and there to what your making.Thats why I like the patterns.Mrs.C
Making Wire Jewelry.......2003-08-15
Younger wire makers will appreciate this book. The patterns are simple and use only wire in repeated designs joined together. The ring section is very simple and is only for someone just starting out in wire. Do not purchase this item if you have any expierence in wire jewelry--only if just starting out.
Book Description
The recent rise in the West of Japanese photography makes Setting Sun a crucial document. The first anthology of its kind to appear in English, this book collects key texts written from the 1950s to the present by the country's most celebrated and controversial photographers, and illuminates a set of ideas, rules, and aesthetics that are specific to Japanese culture, but often little known elsewhere. Contributors include Takuma Nakahira and Daido Moriyama, in whose landmark late-60s magazine Provoke a radically new direction in Japanese photography was set; Nobuyoshi Araki, the provocative and prolific chronicler of bound girls (among other subjects); and Eikoh Hosoe, whose collaborations with the Butoh dance master Hijikata and the novelist Mishima made him prominent as an intellectual figure as well as a photographer. In addition, there are selections from modern masters such as Masahisa Fukase, Takashi Homma, Takuma Nakahira, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Each chapter in the book is devoted to a central theme that is particular to Japanese photography, such as the role of nostalgia in a culture that has often sought to jettison its past amid the shadows of a war lost. The writings vary in form from diary entry to scholarly treatise, but all reflect a clear connection between word and image, one so essential that no comprehensive consideration of Japanese photography can be complete without it.

Book Description
Isaac Cruikshank and the Politics of Parody is a catalogue raisonne of Cruikshank's watercolors in the Huntington, the largest group of works by the artist in this medium. All 117 images, called "drolls" because of their comic themes and characters, are illustrated, along with the artist's notes and sketches on the verso of the originals. Cruikshank was a contemporary of Rowlandson and Gillray, and the father of George Cruikshank, the well-known illustrator of Dickens.
Cruikshank catches most of his subjects when they would least like to be observed. Whether the setting is public or domestic, disaster has struck, or is impending: a boat on its way to Vauxhall gardens capsizes near Westminster Bridge; a stampede of pigs en route to Smithfield Market overwhelms strolling shoppers; an inexperienced chef begins to prepare dinner by hurling onions at a live rabbit. The descriptions accompanying each image suggest the social and political background of these amusing depictions of life in eighteenth-century London. Satirical poems that accompanied published versions of the drawings, many of them theatrical afterpieces associated with well-known actors, are quoted in full. An introduction by Edward J. Nygren, former director of the Huntington Art Collections, explores the relationship of Cruikshank's satirical art to the contemporary theater.

An excellent account of Canadian history.......1998-08-24
This is without a doubt one of the most interesting books that I have read in a long time. The authors have in detail given us an account of what it would have been like to venture through the wilds of B.C. to cross the passes, and raft down a dangerous river to get to Dawson. Living in this northern region in their log cabin and panning for gold would be an adventure most people wouldn't even consider. A well written book Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and I am looking further to more of your adventures.

Book Description
This stunning memoir traces an incredible life in soccer, told by one of the games greatest players. From humble roots in North Wales, Joey's obsession with the game began at an early age. As he cheered on stars like Ian St John, Roger Hunt, and his idol Tommy Smith, he dreamed that one day he'd be out on the pitch with the best of them. Eight years later that dream would come true when Joey played alongside Smith as Liverpool took the 1977 European Cup in Rome. Told with the characteristic warmth and humor that Joey is well loved for, this autobiography tells a story of ambition, talent, and success.
