Start here.......2005-12-31
This was the text book for my history of costume and other classes at University. It, along with it's brief but incredibly helpful pattern book are my first stop whenever creating an historical costume. I have walls of books on the subject but this is, for me, definitive. Dear Lucy, her research is impeccable, her hints on construction are invaluable and the illustrations are informative. I was a professional theatrical costume designer and maker for years and I have always kept this one for my best reference. It is followed, but not supplanted by the Janet Arnold books. These experts knew the extant garments of these periods and were respected by people in their own fields as well as the museum curators, etc. Get this one by all means!
Excellent Reference.......2000-02-09
This was the textbook for my college History of Costume class. I majored in fashion design, subsequently went on to become a theatre costume designer, and for every costume, every show I have ever designed, this book was the initial source. I have NEVER seen a better overall costume reference. A must for anyone with a fascination for human apparel.
Indispensible.......1999-03-18
For all the costume books out there- glitzy, gorgeous, full color photos & all- this book is the bedrock for all of them & for any aspiring- or working!- designer this is the foundation of your library. I am offering it as a text for my History of Costume class, as its clearheaded descriptions of historic garments & life are the basis of my lectures anyway; my students mught lose my handouts but it's too great a book to lose!

Book Description
In Affectionate Men, photographic collector Russell Bush has assembled an album of images--daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, and ordinary Kodak prints--that form an idiosyncratic record of the affection between men, from the 1850's to the 1950's. The earliest daguerreotypes in the book was made in America around 1850- an image frozen in time long before the invention of the automobile, telephone, radio, or airplane.Over a period of one hundred years, we can see the changing styles in clothes, hair, and attitudes, but what remains constant is the expression of affection and love between these men. Some may be gay, others assuredly not, but whatever the relationship, these images celebrate Walt Whitman's "dear love of comrades."

A WORK OF ART.......2006-06-29
I found this book to be beautiful and profound. Regardless if the men pictured were lovers or friends, the photographs made me realize that today we live in a completely different society than the one pictured in this enlightening book. It seemed to be a time (1850-1920)when men were more free to hold hands, hug, even kiss, without the fear of being riduculed, beaten or labeled. It makes me realize that we live in a society just now when we should have moved forward with our emotional freedom and tolerance of others. Instead we seem to be moving backward every day. That is why I feel this book should be looked at, experienced and shared over and over again. It reminded me that in spite of our great leaps in science, medicine and fantastic inventions, and our recent explorations of space, as humankind we seem to have taken a leap into a world that is filled with hate and intolerance, one that has lost the innocence and joy one feels in experiencing these photographs of a special and more unique time and place.
Unusual and touching.......2002-08-08
This slim volume of old daguerrotypes, tintypes, and photographs of men together provides a touching reminder of a time when males felt no inhibitions about expressing physical affection for one another and having it documented on film. The men who populate these pages may or may not have been sexual lovers, but their casual embraces and closeness are curiously moving in a time when gay men and women are struggling for acceptance against frequently virulent opposition. The only drawbacks to this volume are its short length and occasionally cutesy artwork, but these should not dissuade any reader from enjoying these images.
Beautiful pics, leaves you wanting more.......2001-11-27
This is what I would call a nice little novelty book--perfectly charming, fascinating historically, but not one I will likely pull out to look at time and time again.
The pictures are indeed fascinating (especially the candid nudes!). However--and in fairness, the author stresses this in the foreword--I would guess that a significant number of these "couples" are not romantically linked in any way. I suspect that they most often simply represent a time when men in our culture (or in European cultures, since many of them are from overseas) thought nothing of touching one another affectionately in public. It actually documents very well that the "manly" refusal of men to hold hands or even to stand with arms around one another, is of more recent vintage, and thus it holds out the hope that maybe the pendulum will swing back. I recommend the book, though. It makes a nice addition to my collection--and the design, by the way, is superb....
Well-designed book makes you wish for more.......1999-09-17
While this book is well-designed and many of the photographs are lovely and thought-provoking (Are these men friends, brothers, lovers?), you leave it realizing that this is basically one person's collection of old photographs of men together. I bet there are many, many more--and better examples out there that would have made this book memorable.
I love this book !.......1999-01-03
Got this book as a gift two weeks ago & a day hasn't gone by that I haven't found myself wanting to spend time perusing it.. If you're a gay man, here is your history in beautiful, touching photographs. Some of them are truly amazing.

A PAPERBACK ORIGINAL
A guide to getting the most out of your first job from America's #1 twentysomething career columnist
There are plenty of good books offering recent college grads advice on how to write the perfect resume and how to ace the interview. Yet, amazingly, until now, there were none that focused on what they should do once they landed the job, or how to use that first, menial position as the springboard to bigger and better things. Written by a successful 20-something, for 20-somethings, I Went to College for This? is a breezy, informative guide to navigating the sometimes tricky, often confusing career paths open to those just breaking into the real world of work. In I Went to College for This? author Amy Joyce uses the real-life anecdotes of dozens of postgrads from across North America to inspire and inform readers on how to make the most of those early dues-paying jobs. From how to talk to your boss, to managing office romances, to knowing when to quit, she offers young readers expert advice and guidance on how to transform the jobs they have into the careers they want.

Leans too heavily on third-party anecdotes........2006-12-27
This book is larded heavily with third-party anecdotes of people on their own career paths which are supposed to be inspirational or teach the reader something. Unfortunately, I found these stories taught me little since they had little relevance to my own situation. How could they? Everybody's life is different. For example, in the section on how first jobs can be disappointing, which is supposed to cheer us up, we read about how the "friend who worked as an aide on Capitol Hill for a senator had to wear business suits". Gasp! Then we read about how "Another friend took a job in human resources but was asked to fill in for the company receptionist to answer the main phone lines during lunch hour"! Oh no! The shame! The fact is, these stories are so out of touch with the reality of many people's first jobs, at a time when many college grads end up flipping burgers or cleaning washrooms, when blue collar jobs are being lost to automation and immigrants, and white collar jobs are being outsourced, it's laughable. Since everybody's experiences are different, anecdotes don't teach much of any value anyway, and especially not pie-in-the-sky anecdotes like are found in this book. Perhaps some readers will find the stories encouraging but they will leave the rest of us cold.
great book.......2003-11-05
I found this book to be extremely informative, not to mention witty and entertaining. It is beneficial for those who are just starting their career and also people (like myself) who have been in the work force for several years and are wondering where to go next. I highly recommend it.
Real life...Real examples.......2003-10-23
I really enjoyed this book! It was a wonderful journey full of real people and real job/life situations. I highly recommend this book to everyone just out of college or looking to change/re-evaluate their career.
Great advice!.......2003-10-23
This book was awesome. It has practical, great advice, written in a conversational style that makes it easy to read. These are the things no one ever teaches you but you REALLY need to know - and it comes from the voice of someone OUR age who has been there, not some condescending "adult." (Wait - are we adults?) But seriously, I am buying this book for every new college grad. I highly recommend it.
A must for new grads.......2003-08-03
We all go to college with the assumption that we will do great things. Unfortunately, college doesn't prepare folks for what is actually going on in the "real world" nearly as well as a recent grads first 5 weeks on the job.
Having successfully worked and lived through the .Gones and (partially) climbed the corp ladder at the worlds best software company I can tell you that this book is a must read for new grads. The book will level set their expectations and provide needed insight into not only how to survive but more importantly how to succeed at their first real job.

Book Description
For twenty years Benjamin Ide Wheeler served as president of the University of California. During these years great changes occurred in the field of university education; many of them were the inevitable result of altered conditions in the life of the nation and of changes in the conception of a university and, as a consequence, in the composition of the student bodies themselves. It must be conceded that of a considerable number of these developments at one important university, President Wheeler was a great part. Because of his many notable contributions to the University of California, because of the wide range of his interests, and because of the felicity with which he chose the apt word, his friends deemed it appropriate to select from the long list of his writings and addresses those that best express his ideas in a number of the fields in which his mind ranged, and gather them together in this volume.

Book Description
A one-of-a-kind compendium of hockey lore, legend, facts and stats from Canada’s trivia expert.
By the time he was sixteen, Liam Maguire’s passion for the game of hockey had turned into an obsession for its details. Today, Maguire makes his living talking about hockey and answering trivia questions. What makes him extraordinary are the magical connections he builds between the numbers, the players and the game’s history. Whenever he answers a question, besides the straight goods, you also get the ultimate, “And did you know…” with each query. For instance, on October 17, 1998, Wayne Gretzky scored his first goal of the last season he would ever play in the NHL. This goal had wonderful historical and statistical implications but nobody ever reported them — except for Liam Maguire in this book. What’s The Score weaves Maguire’s unique approach to hockey’s fine points with his undying passion for the game to create a matchless look at the teams and players, past and present.
From the opening “30 Teams, 30 Questions,” prepare to be amazed by Maguire’s knowledge of hockey’s oddities, history and statistics. In “Stanley Cup Archives” — great for referral at play-off time – you’ll find out not only who played, who won and who scored the cup winning goal for every year of the NHL Stanley Cup final but incredible Cup stories many of which have not been seen in print before. Sure to inspire debate is “Best of the Best.” Maguire gives us his top ten picks of players in their particular eras, but he’s also created a second list of players who rivalled those top ten players for talent and heart. Who were these “shadow men” and why were they so crucial to the game? A passionate advocate for the game and Canadians’ participation in it, one of Maguire’s missions in life is to see Paul Henderson inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Find out why Maguire believes Henderson deserves this highest of hockey honours.
Jam packed with hockey facts and stats, filled with anecdotes that will have you saying “Where did he find that?,” What’s The Score is one of the only hockey trivia books a red-blooded hockey fan will ever need.
Test Your Knowledge
1) On May 10, 1970 Bobby Orr scored possibly the greatest goal in the history of the National Hockey League. This goal has a very unusual association to the number four. What are the seventy different correlations to the number four at the moment Orr scored the goal and ended the Stanley Cup playoffs?
2) Only eighty players have recorded a fifty goal season. One of those accomplished this feat five times — three times hitting the mark on his birthday, one time scoring his fiftieth goal on his brother. Who is this player?
3) One member of this family scored the first goal ever in Philadelphia Quaker history; one assisted on the goal that decided the NHL’s longest game; one scored the first goal ever in the Los Angeles Kings history. Two brothers and a nephew. Who are they?
Answers: To find out the answers to these and many other questions, you’ll have to read Liam Maguire’s fascinating book.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recomend for all hockey fans.......2002-12-11
I got many books about HHL history, but for my recent trivia contest used only this one, because Liam cover nearly all interesting facts about NHL. I also read this book just because it's interesting, with very good language and attitude to the facts. The very interesting part in this book is his attention to the 1972 series between Canada and Russia, because for me a Russian guy it's important to know what is other side think about this. So if you want to have very rare and complete knowlege about NHL please read this book.
