I just bought my first house, an 1920's victorian style house. This book is being a good send to help me decorate and restore it to it's former glory.

Linda Osband has done an admirable job of collecting images from England and the United States to help illustrated the Gothic Revival Movement. What she falls short on in text she makes up for in picture and engravings. It is not as comprehensive as I was hoping and there are some areas that I would have appreciated a more in-depth explanation: facades and furniture that identify the period being top of the list. The samples she has for gothic kitchens are modern but she supplements them with appliance advertisements from the 1870s-1890s. This helps identify what was used during this time, not necessarily practical now. She also incorporates the use of advertisements for tile samples and patterns that were available as well as ironwork. She covers all aspects of Gothic Revival from the outside to the interior to the furniture to the conservatory. Overall, there are some good ideas and good reading to be found if you are planning on restoring a residence or creating a period dollhouse. Highly recommend.

What makes this book so hot? Page after page of iconic portraits of hip hop heros from the late Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls to modern masters like Wu Tang Clan and Outkast. And of course there are R&B divas like Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, and Faith Evans. There are shots of Michael and Janet Jackson and reggae stars like Shabba Ranks, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, and Bounty Killer. Also political figures like Louis Farrakhan and Rev. Al Sharpton. There's even a great portrait of Toni Morrison's dreadlocks. This is great photography that captures a great era in human history: the hip hop era.

one of my aged aunts thought i would like this for my birthday, 1st look at the cover and i thought "this looks ok" but what a load of piss! they chopped down a tree to make this crap?

there should be a law against killing tress to print this sort of waste of paper, the wtiter obviously knows nothing about reggae or seemingly much else and i have seen better photos in a family album!

This is the definitive biography of Alexander Meiklejohn, one of the most important and controversial educators and civil libertarians of the twentieth century. A charismatic teacher and philosopher with extrordinarily high expectations for democratic self-government in the United States, Meiklejohn was both beloved and reviled during his long life. Brilliant and dedicated, he could also be stubborn and arrogant, and his passion for his own ideals led to frequent clashes with prominent and powerful critics.

The son of reform-minded, working-class immigrants from Scotland, Meiklejohn rejected the spiritually agnostic and politically instrumentalist philosophies of his Progressive-Era contemporaries, many of whom, he argued, simply took democracy for granted. As dean of Brown University at the outset of the twentieth century, he lamented the disintegration of the old classical curriculum and questioned the rising influence of amoral science in modern higher education. He served as president of Amherst College during the culturally turbulent years of World War I, a director of the famous Experimental College at the University of Wisconsin during the late 1920s and early 1930s, and as a delegate to UNESCO after World War II.
