A must-have for William Morris fans.......2002-09-09
Elizabeth Wilhide's superb "William Morris: Decor and Design" will be a real treat for William Morris fans. Wilhide combines dozens of sumptuous color photographs of Morris interiors with an overview of his life, his influences, and his artistic goals. I learned a number of interesting things about his personal background, such as:
- His beautiful wife Jane had a long affair with fellow artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti;
- In addition to his design work, he was such a respected poet that he was offered the poet laureateship of England once Tennyson had died;
- Many of his designs are still in active production today, more than a century after his death.
Morris shunned the effect the Industrial Revolution had had on the arts in England (and elsewhere) and proposed that hand-crafted art, furniture, wallpaper, and so on be the goal of an artists' cooperative he helped to found. He felt that art should be in every home and that it should be useful, beautiful to look at, and durable. This success of the cooperative produced the uncomfortable situation, for Morris, of having art be so beautifully and painstakingly produced by hand that, in the end, only the wealthy could afford it.
The photographs of Morris interiors, wallpaper designs, furniture, and more, are absolutely sumptuous, and Wilhide's well-informed and well-written text helps to expand our understanding of the whole of Morris' life. Highly recommended!
This is a beautiful, must-have interior design book!.......2000-04-21
With its stunning photographs, reproduced in exceptional color, William Morris: Décor & Design is a fine interior design book that belongs on every coffee table. This book will surely win more appreciation for the diverse talents of the great designer when newcomers to Morris see the breadth of his talents presented so beautifully. As a long-time admirer, I have many books about the 19th century designer, poet, fantasist, etc., but this is one of my favorites, as well as one of the most complete books on his design that I have seen. Photographs range from the interiors of houses and public buildings decorated by Morris for clients, to the homes he actually lived in. Insets show details of patterns, from wallpaper to tapestry to upholstery fabric to curtains, as well as pages from his illuminated books and the Morris & Co. catalog. Non-Morris interiors are shown for comparison. A pictorial glossary of his most common patterns completes the book. Further, the biography chapter is a good, comprehensive introduction to Morris, describing his forays into politics and literature, as well as his many efforts in all aspects of design. I recommend this beautifully designed book, a fitting tribute to Morris's own delight in design, to any lover of beauty in art and design.

Light, airy, rooms...clean-lined wooden furnishings...richly patterned rugs and fabrics in colors inspired by nature. William Morris was the first to champion the styles that remain quintessentially modern today. William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Home is both a profile of this innovative tastemaker and a lavishly illustrated guide to decorating with these ever-popular elements. Over 200 photographs capture the Arts and Crafts look, both in Morris's own residences as well as in contemporary homes where the classic Morris aesthetic of simple beauty prevails. Organized by element, chapters on the legendary patterned fabrics and wallpapers he designed, his artisan wooden furniture, curtains and carpets, ceramics and metalwork all serve to illustrate Morris's unique vision. Informative, engaging, and delightful to peruse, William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Home captures the beauty and simplicity of these influential designs.

Lovely details.......2006-06-22
If you appreciate anything to do with the Arts & Crafts movement, you'll really like this book -- even if you look only at the pictures. It's separated into sections on exteriors and gardens; interiors (architecture); decorative patterns (wallpapers and woven fabric); furniture; softer elements (curtains, rugs, carpets, etc.); finishing touches (ornament, tiles).
Each has plenty of detail: you see the overall effect (the entire wall of wallpaper) and the specific design (a zoom in on the wallpaper's design). Even if you care about only one element (you're into fabric for instance) you'll get plenty out of this book.
For Lovers of Arts and Crafts Homes.......2006-01-16
William Morris changed people's attitudes towards architecture and interior decoration when Victorian excess was at it's height. I love the use of wood in an Arts and Crafts house. For others who feel this way, this book is a treat. At the back are two useful sections: Where to See Arts and Crafts Homes and a listing of Specialist Supplies for anyone renovating an Arts and Crafts Home.
You might also want to read The William Morris Stained Glass Pattern Book and The Life and Works of William Morris. Take a look also at Craftsman Homes: Architecture and Furnishings of the American Arts and Crafts Movement.

Book Description
Internationally renowned artist and best-selling author Stephen Quiller shows readers how to discover their own personal "color sense" in Color Choices, a book that offers readers a fresh perspective on refining their own color styles. With the help of his own "Quiller Wheel," a special foldout wheel featuring 68 precisely placed colors, the author shows artists how they can develop their own unique color blends. First, Quiller demonstrates how to use the wheel to interpret color relationships and mix colors more clearly. Then he explains, step by step, how to develop five structured color schemes; apply underlays and overlays; and use color in striking, unusual ways. This book will bring out every artist's unique sense of color whether he or she works in oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, or casein.
Customer Reviews:
Totally Excellent Analysis .......2006-10-04
Stephen Quiller's books,(I have his book on using Acrylics as well) are definitly the most helpful to me as I am attempting to take up painting again after a long hiatus. His color wheel is fabulous as are his suggestions on mixing results for different pigments, suggestions on setting up one's pallette, what colors are available in various named brands, etc. on and on. All of this information is for water based media, so if that is what you need, it is all here! One may or may not like his style of painting---it is semi-abstract with elements of realism that makes it appear more commercially appealing I suspect, but his color info is dead on! One definitely does not wind up with mud when following his suggestions.
Color can be everything!.......2006-08-14
Great book presenting a complex theory in understandable fashion! Quiller is an expert in the theory of color.
A Master of Color Harmony.......2004-09-17
Stephen Quiller is a real master of color harmony. I warmly recommend his book. He teaches not only the color theory, but also demonstrates how it works in practice with his own work. Quiller shows how to mix colors in real life and how to find out the complementaries. His color wheel adds the commercial names of hues that one finds in shops, which is quite handy.
Quiller will teach you not to use the "real" surface color of the objects, but to search for feelings and the atmosphere of the ambient. The leaves may be, say, violet and the sky yellow, if that is how you see them.
One thing Quiller misses to point out is additive color mixing like it was used by pointillists. When colors mix in the eye the rules of harmony are somewhat different.
If you are sceptical about brave color mixtures I recommend you to first have a look at Quiller's art at his internet pages.
5 stars for his color wheel.......2003-09-21
This book is worth buying for Quiller's color wheel. It is by far the best and most practical I have ever seen. It makes paint mixing very easy. Throw out your color mixing cook books and buy this one.
This book is trash.......2003-08-09
If you want a book about jarring, hideous color combinations and no useful information whatsoever, get this one. There are so many bad art instruction books, and this one is one of the worst & most useless. The cover of the book gives you an example of the horrible color schemes the author uses. Do you really want to make paintings like that? Also, the color theory in this book is WRONG. Quiller is one of those who still believes that the primary colors are red, blue, and yellow, when they are actually cyan, magenta, and yellow. I bought another book, "Color Theory Made Easy," which is much better. It teaches correct color theory and useful information. I don't know what other good color theory books there are, but I do know you shouldn't buy this useless piece of junk by Quiller. I am really tired of bad art instruction books getting rave reviews on Amazon.com and buying them because I was gullible enough to believe all these reviews.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2005-09-16
This book is very, very, outdated. If your serious about film school this book will do you no good.
Good Reference - but very dated.......2005-08-19
Pintoff has put together a very good reference of film schools and film programs around the nation
Unfortunately, it is now over 10 years old, and while many of the programs the book lists are still in existance, much of the info or data about them is too dated to be correct/relevant today
My biggest criticism though would be that the book only lists the various programs and gives contact info ---- other than that, there are no reviews or feedback of the programs
(...)
Despite the cynical vibe on LOAFS, it nonetheless, lists almost all the film programs available, and its completely free!
Happy reading!
Nice reference book: precise, yet informative............2000-05-31
This book lists all Film/TV schools and colleges by state. It has many-many different options listed: from community colleges to the grad schools. However, it does not provide more specific info about admission and local issues. As a general reference book, it is very uselful, if you are looking for all options possible. It does give you a brief idea about cost and access to the equipment for most institutions listed. This book is better than the ones I have seen on the subject so far.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!.......1998-09-07
McPherson's funniest Close To Home collection ever! I am a big fan of his panel and I read it every single day in my newspaper. I don't want to spoil anything for you guys who love cliffhangers, so I'll just give one example of a panel: There are two woman in the kitchen, and one wall has a bunch of crossword puzzle clues written on it, and on the floor there is a crossword puzzle!! And in the corner is a huge pencil! And this woman is saying to the other: "This is what I get for marrying a crossword puzzle fanatic." And if you think THAT'S funny, you should read the rest! A must-buy!!!

A Priceless Jewel Stolen..........2002-07-03
This is the third book in Hood's series about Liam Rhenford and his dragon familiar, Faniulh. This story takes place a short two months after Wizard's Heir, just enough time for Liam to get bored. Liam's friend, the Aedile, recommends Liam to widowed Mistress Priscian as a merchant partner. Then a mage shows up at his door to hide from the Wizard's Guild and to go through Tarquin's things. The next morning, a body with his throat cut washes up on Liam's beach. Liam brings the body to the Aedile and finds that Mistress Priscian's priceless family heirloom, the Priscian Jewel, has been stolen. The story catches Liam's interest and he volunteers to investigate the mysterious theft - all of the suspects have a motive, but who did it? In short order, Liam finds himself embroiled in a duel, receiving invitations from rich, bored women, mingling with the "upper crust", hunting down thieves and beggars and trying to keep his houseguest happy!
Another thrilling adventure with Liam and Faniulh! If you love fantasy and mystery, then this is a great series for you. Once again, Daniel Hood uses superb characterization and beautiful detail to bring the land of Southwark to life. Find this book - you will not want to miss it!
Hood surpasses his first two books with Beggar's Banquet........2001-06-06
Banquet continues the adventures of Liam and his Dragon familiar Fanuilh. It takes place a month or two after the events of Wizard's Heir. A priceless jewel is stolen under mysterious circumstances, Liam investigates, bodies start piling up.... It's everything you want in your Mystery-Fantasy crossover! "Fanuilh" and "Wizard's Heir" gave me an entertaining read and impressed me with Hood's clever concept of mixing the Fantasy genre with the Mystery genres of hard-boiled dectective (in Fanuilh) and Sherlock Holmes style (in Wizard's Heir.) In Banquet he blends Fantasy and Agatha Christie style mystery. If that was all there was it would have been good enough. But Hood throws in a shock twist ending that blew me away. A big improvement over the first two books and I LIKED the first two books!
Well-done fantasy and puzzling mystery all wrapped up in one.......2000-11-14
I always believed few authors try to mix genres. It is not that it's impossible, or that it doesn't sell. I imagined it was because of the difficulty of writing well in the first place: one should master one genre before attempting to blaze new trails. This series has lifted the blinders from my eyes.
In this story, Liam Rhenford must troll the sewers of society and game with the glittering aristocracy to solve a murder. I've read one other author who does such a good job of combining fantasy and mystery, and that is Glen Cook, whose Garrett series combines fantasy with hard-boiled noir detective fiction. This is far more the gentleman detective, a genre that seems to be entering decline. With Daniel Hood searching out new territory, it can only get better.
Mysteries....?.......2000-05-06
The book was given to me by my friend, he said nothing about it being a mystery, or I wouldn't have read it. But from the first few pages I realized the author had talent, and did'nt even think about as being a mystery until after I was finished. The book was excellent. I reccomend it to any fantasy lover or mystery reader. Wait, I reccomend it to anybody.
Blown away.......1999-07-25
Its not that I believed a legitimate honest-to-gosh whodunnit puzzler murder mystery COULDN'T be done in a full-fledged fantasy realm (after all, Randall Garrett came close with his Lord Darcy tales). I just didn't think it WOULD be done. Or at least not well. Daniel Hood has created a series of novels that are both wonderful fantasy and terrific mysteries, complete with first-rate characters. I can't overstate how impressed I am! More more more please!
Book Description
Over the years, Ian Rankin has amassed an incredible portfolio of short stories. Published in crime magazines, composed for events, broadcast on radio, they all share the best qualities of his phenomenally popular Rebus novels. Ten years ago, A GOOD HANGING - Ian's first short story collection - demonstrated this talent and now after nearly a decade at the top of popular fiction, Ian is releasing a follow-up. Ranging from the macabre ('The Hanged Man') to the unfortunate ('The Only True Comedian') right back to the sinister ('Someone Got To Eddie') they all bear the hallmark of great crime writing. Of even more interest to his many fans, Ian includes seven Inspector Rebus stories in this collection . . .
Customer Reviews:
A cut above other short story collections.......2006-06-15
This anthology of crime wins on both quantity and quality, and is truly an excellent value. Not every story is a revelation--a couple are even slightly cliched, and the Christmas one is slightly cheesy, although better executed than most of that nature. This is far outweighed by the number of gems in this volume--I particularly enjoy "Herbert in Motion"'s unusual narrator and concept. "Talk Show" is another favorite. All of the stories are enjoyable.
Only a few of the tales are stylistically different from the rest. His strength is good old-fashioned quality story-telling, with an excellent sense of setting, interesting characters, and usually good plotting. Overall, this is truly the most satisfying short story collection I have encountered. (Please don't buy it if you don't like short stories in general--the stories are still limited by their form. A character can't be well-developed in 20 pages, no matter the quality of the characterization.)
All the stories take place in Scotland, and seven of the twenty-one stories feature Inspector Rebus. I never read Rankin before, so I found the chronology of Rebus's personal life confusing, even after looking up the publication dates of the stories. Each story stands alone, with no prior knowledge of Rankin's other books needed. An introduction, with some illumination of the origins of some of the stories is provided.
Both "A Deep Hole" and "Herbert in Motion" won Daggers for best short story. "A Deep Hole" was also shortlisted for the Anthony award.
Crime, Edinburgh Style.......2005-10-28
I've been a Rebus fan for several years now, so I happily purchased this book when I spotted it in an Edinburgh bookshop. I happened to be travelling from the States, so I had the additional pleasure of reading the book while surrounded by the locations where the short stories are set.
Unlike many authors of novels, Rankin also excels in the short story form. In addition to seven Rebus short stories (a couple of which could have easily been stretched into novels), I particularly enjoyed many of the non-Rebus stories. In particular "Someone Got to Eddie" (an informant is killed), "Principles of Accounts" (a professional kidnapper matches wits with the police), "Herbert in Motion" (the curator of a museum forges paintings) and "The Wider Scheme" (a solicitor becomes involved in the hunt for a murderer).
I certainly hope Rankin keeps up his short story writing and that there will be additional collections in the future.
Book Description
In 1967, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach established the House of Love and Prayer, an outreach center for Jewish spiritual seekers located in San Francisco. One of its activities was the publication of The Holy Beggars' Gazette, a gathering of Jewish wisdom authored by Reb Shlomo and others. This book brings together the contents of The Holy Beggars' Gazette, and is presented chronologically from its beginnings in 1972 until it ceased publication in 1979.
Customer Reviews:
Shlomo was a great storyteller also.......2005-02-09
Along with creating the music which much of the Jewish world davvans with today, Shlomo was a master creator in other ways. He was a master storyteller and teacher, whose deep knowledge of Torah and especially Hasidut enabled him to answer the longings of his contemporaries with wisdom deep from the Tradition.
A Shlomo story has a message, usually one of faith and of the miraculous powers of the Divine , and of the goodness within the Jew and human being, when we are good to others. These stories collected devotedly by Kalman Serkez are a wonderful introduction to the whole world of Shlomo - storytelling. A couple brought me back to my own education in the stories of Shlomo given his great student and my own beloved teacher, David Herzberg. In the words of the Shlomo people David was in telling a story or in just being a friend as he was to so many others, the highest of the highest, the very best.
Wonderful stories and teachings from the 70's........1998-07-12
As the editor of the original Holy Beggars' Gazette (1972-77), it is wonderful to see these stories and teaching made available again. Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach (1925-1994) was truly a great teacher and his stories have touched a multitude of souls around the world. The stories and teachings in this book originated from a special and spiritual period in San Francisco 25 years ago around the House of Love and Prayer founded by Shlomo Carlebach. Thousands of people passed by and they all received from Shlomo and his community of holy beggars. Shlomo was between 45 and 52 years old during this period and many of the seekers who visited are now that same age... Read these teachings and be moved by the simple wisdom - Chassidic Jewish wisdom expressed in stories... Shlomo, we miss your holy presence. May new souls continue to be touched by your stories and teachings. Steven Maimes

The life of Mr. Hong Woo Jun.......2003-11-04
Mr. Hong is indeed an incredible man of God whose life story is remarkable and interesting. As far as I know, he does not speak a word of English but I can picture him speaking to the author of this book with my father (who did the translation for this book) standing by listening carefully and believe the story to be straight from Mr. Hong's mouth to our eyes. The only fault I found in the writing was the spelling of certain Korean words that were likely "heard" that way by the author as he jotted down his notes and not as they were actually spoken by Mr. Hong.
Mr. Hong was a young boy living in North Korean when the Japanese occupied the land in the early 1900's. He suffered great persecution/imprisonment for his Christian faith by the Japanese and later the savage Russian invaders and Communists. He managed to escape to the south as the war began. Starting out with a chicken coop and selling of eggs to purchase property (mostly through the efforts of his wife - the dear woman he married after having lost two sweethearts to the war situation - as he was trying to help the beggars of Korea), Mr. Hong now owns and runs the largest privately owned Christian school in the entire world. He's a most wonderful, giving man who God has blessed for his faithfulness. His story is well worth reading and inspiring.
Good.......2000-03-19
I think that it is good but it could be better. I know that it is an autobiography, but I think that the author could have made it in better words.
