Customer Reviews:
John Boy Walton orders a new home from Sears & Roebuck.......2007-02-15
This book was as useless as the German version of Strarwars that I received on Amazon
Before there were kit homes, there were plan books..........2006-01-14
This is a reprint of Radford's 1909 Plan Book and (may I one day be forgiven for saying this, but), some of these houses were ugly. I mean really and truly UGLY.
But some of them weren't so bad. If you were a wanna-be homeowner (almost) 100 years ago, you'd peruse the pages and pick out a house that suited your needs and your pocketbook. Then you'd send in a few bucks (typically $5 or so) and receive a full set of blueprints that you'd use to build your dream house.
The quality of this reprint is good and this is a fun read, if for no other reason than to get an idea of the evolution of American architecture.
Rose
author, The Houses That Sears Built
co-author, California's Kit Homes
Book Description
Reprint of fascinating 1912 publication features all the winning entries from a major nationwide competition for bungalow designs — from a tile-roofed hacienda to an elaborate thatch-roofed English cottage. 100 superbly rendered plates show houses in perspective, with floor plans, itemized construction costs, and some landscape planning.
Customer Reviews:
Slightly difficult to read.......2002-04-18
The sketches and floor plans are a little hard to read by modern standards, as all are hand-lettered, and the designs are a little light on bathrooms, to say nothing of garages, compared to contemporary homes. But the homes are very Picturesque nonetheless, featuring plenty of faux thatched roofs, chimneys, eyebrow dormers, arched entryways, porches and so forth.
Book Description
For drawing various guns, accouterment, mechanics of combat planes and warships we introduce the essentials for developing a basic knowledge. Apart from the trove of knowledge and data that makes up the pictorial materials, there are the basics of character types and story concepts. Not only will this volume become the artist's brave ally, but it will also be enjoyed as reading material and a fountain of knowledge.
Customer Reviews:
References only!.......2007-08-13
I bought the book for the title sack, "Learn how to draw military." Sadly the book only shows drawn pictures of military aircraft and a few tanks and does not explain how to draw them. There are no set up techniques, steps, or anything. There are only pre-drawn pictures, which makes this book good only for references. However, I was impressed with the large number of military units covered. The book covers aircraft from the Second World War to the present and even lists some technical facts about the airplanes, helicopters, and jets. Like how much horsepower a P-51 Mustang can max out, or how many models of Japanese Zero's there were by the war's end. Even the companies who manufactured the engines for the planes are listed. All in all if you like drawing military this book will make a wonderful reference source, however if you are trying to learn how to draw military vehicles look for a different book.
Book Description
This limited-edition publication is limited to 1500 copies. Each book is signed and numbered and presented in a cloth slipcase. When opened, the book extends to display panoramic spreads almost three feet wide. Eight four-page velum inserts are interspersed throughout, the transparency of which emphasizes the delicate separation between worlds real and imagined.
In the world of Scotlandfuturebog, photographers Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick construct a strange and beautiful world that they describe as being of "infinite promise that cannot possibly be described or communicated except by direct experience." The characters we meet are bogdwellers, sole inhabitants of a planet emptied by an apocalyptic event. Left to perform obscure ceremonies in a terrain that is as intriguing as it is uninviting, the bogdwellers exist in a historical vacuum. The viewer's imagination will soar, creating personal pretexts for the masked characters and the strange rituals they conduct.
Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick, born in New York City and London, respectively, have been collaborating for more than a decade. They have exhibited internationally, in such galleries as Monique Knowlton, New York, Pepper Gallery, Boston, and The Royal Photographic Society, Bath, England. Their work is held in the collections of The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as many private collections.
Scotlandfuturebog also features an original work of fiction by Ben Marcus. Marcus's second novel, Notable American Women, was published in March 2002 by Vintage. Contributions to BOMB, Harper's, McSweeney's, and the Village Voice have established him as one of the most exciting and imaginative writers working today.

Not the end?.......2006-10-27
According to the infamous Wikipedia there just might be a 12th volume. The mangaka went on haiatus in 2001 from this serties & hasn't made a manga since. My personal guess is that the original Japanese publishers are pressuring her to pick up the series again now that they're making forign profit through Viz off the series. The exact same thing happened to the Aoike Yasuko whom made the Eroica manga; 7 year haiatus on book 19, now on book 33.
Hopefully the series will extend beyond a 12th book & like Patalliro, get a second TV series to boot. Oh yeah, & there's a raunchy yaoi scene at the end between unfamiliar characters. The series gets progressively BL.
Volume 3: "The Sword of K".......2006-08-31
I had a few doubts as to whether I was going to like this series at first, but Vol. 3 dispelled them. This was a VERY good story; intense, dramatic, and well told. If you were only to get ONE book from the 11-part series, this would be it. Though of course you should also at least get Book 1, which introduces the characters and the situation presented here.
The (delightful) hero is Tsuzuki, a "shinigami" or Guardian of Death, who is dispatched by the Judgement Bureau of the Minstry of Hades to investigate what appear to be vampire attacks aboard a luxury cruise liner. The focus of the story is Hizoka, Tsuzuki's young partner, who once again comes face to face with - er - the guy on the cover (I don't want to spoil or anything). The story follows up on what was revealed about these characters in Volume 1, but where DoD1 just sort of threw the information at us, here we have intense character development combined with a well constructed mystery story.
DoD is supernatural horror. It is lurid, psychologically murky, and has adult themes. The deep affection and respect between the heroes stands out against this dark milieu, and makes for the major attraction of the series.
random reveiw.......2006-07-03
This is is a good book, keeps you laughing each time you read it
Descedants Of Darkness... Ends All To Quickly.......2006-05-11
I've loved Descendants of Darkness ever since I saw the anime a few years ago. (And I am a guy, by the way. I waited forever for the manga to come out, and even bought the Japanese version a few years ago off Ebay. (Though I can't read kanji...) I am glad it finally came out in English, but unfortunately Vol. 11 is the last. The author never finished the stories and kinda left us all hanging. Unfortunately a lot of great anime do this, including X/1999.
DOD is a great fantasy shojo and is worth reading. Tsuzuki is one of my all time favorite anime/manga characters, and I hope someday the story will be finished... but I'm not holding my breath.
Beyond the Anime.......2006-02-25
As fans may know, the defeat of Muraki, which is the finish of the anime is not the last story in the manga series.
In this new story arc, Hisoka decides to get his own Shiki (the twelve creatures that guard Tsuzuki are called Shiki in the manga, their name is slightly different in the anime). Of course, Tsuzuki volunteers to help him get one,so Tsuzuki takes Hisoki to the Shiki world and of course, they get lost!
If that is not enough, another new story line with Tatsumi and Watari begins. Because Tsuzuki and Hisoka are on this quest,
Tatsumi has to investigate Hisoka's family (the case is not explained yet), something which he grumbles about, since he hasn't led an investigation in 50 years.
We learn that the Shiki live in something called the Imaginary World located in cyberspace (there's an explanation why it is where it is). We see the White Tiger's and Touda's human form, plus other shiki not yet really introduced. We learn a bit more about Tsuzuki's relationship with Touda and how a deal is struck with the creatures of this world.
This is a pretty enjoyable manga as a whole, I'm looking forward to how these two stories play out.

Yami no Matsuei.......2004-06-04
Konnichi-wa Minna-San!
I have read the original version, so don't get your hopes up about this coming out anytime soon, VIZ is lazy. This story is about a group of Shinigamis (Gods of Death). The shinigami collect the souls of people who should have died but haven't for various reasons. The artwork is wonderful. Should this title ever get translated...this is a must. There are hints of Shounen-Ai. Again, VIZ is lazy, but this is a must for anyone who loves a good story, lovable characters, and beautiful artwork.

Book Description
A Sportswriter's Life is a revealing look at the people and events that were part of the history of sports from a perspective usually unavailable to the public. Eskenazi's inside stories of sports are not always flattering, but they are always amusing, touching, and revealing. This entertaining volume will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in reporting, sports, or just a good story.
"Jerry Eskenazi is a consummate professional-an honest and honorable man in a field where those elements are too often overlooked. He has never forgotten the importance of having a sense of fairness, a sense of humor, and a genuine passion for his profession. Jerry always understood that it is the games, and the athletes who compete, that make people want to read the sports page. He has earned an elite level of trust from his readers and the sports figures he covers, because he writes what he sees. He knows what he's doing, and he prepares for each assignment in a way that displays his appreciation and respect for athletic competition and the personalities involved." -Bill Parcells, Head Coach, Dallas Cowboys
"From the glory days of Joe Namath, to the Rangers' quest for a Stanley Cup, to the whacky world of boxing, Jerry Eskenazi has captured these wonderful moments. It's a great read by a premier reporter."-Marv Albert, voice of the New York Knicks and NBA on TNT
Customer Reviews:
Nice read.......2004-02-29
great anecdotes and interesting observations about changes in the sports world, journalism, and American culture.
Book Description
Sean Condon has moved to Amsterdam. He got married, and he's unemployed (what's worse, so is his wife). Sean is back and funnier than ever, this time exploring the strange habits of the Dutch. He also keeps a watchful and wonderfully self-deprecating eye on the whole strange business of writing about yourself doing, well, nothing much, in this post-modern age. Sean's uncanny ability to find the absurd in everyday life misses nothing and My `Dam Life will strike a side-splitting chord with anyone who has ever been unemployed, been married or tried not to be deported from a foreign land.
Customer Reviews:
Agonizingly self-absorbed.......2006-11-30
What a thoroughly irritating book. If you are seeking a useful perspective on Amsterdam, the Netherlands, or the Dutch, there is very nearly zero content of interest.
That Condon could live in one of the most interesting cities in Europe for 3 years, write a book about it and say so little about the place is astonishing - a true testament to his self absorption.
I found myself cringing at the relentless focus on his apparent worthlessness, handled without insight, and with lame attempts at humor that rarely work.
The only two interesting characters in the book, his wife and Keith, are barely covered. I found myself wishing to hear more about them, only from someone else.
One can only wish that someone would return his video games and take away his word processor.
Having said all that, I did give him 2 stars instead of 1 because of his few brief asides regarding the oddness of his occasional interactions with celebrities were insightful and interesting. It mirrored some of my own experiences and really captured the tone.
Writing is a job too.......2006-09-26
This book is hilarious! And somewhat tounge-in-cheek. Relax and enjoy it! (This should have been a 5-star review, alas I clicked on the wrong star and I'm not able to change it.) A couple of reviewers and an acquaintance of mine are quite bothered by the fact that in My Dam Life Condon is unemployed and that his poor wife has to make up for his "laziness" by "struggling to make ends meet." Sean Condon is an author! What good would he be in an office from 9-5 everyday? This isn't his first successful book and no doubt he's pulling in the dough just as well or better than his wife.
Amsterdamnation .......2006-03-17
Sean Condon gives us a precious gift; his own idleness. If he actually had something meaningful to do and an interesting life to write about, he'd be off doing it without so much as a see ya later.
But instead, he's forced, not altogether happily, to find meaning in the word soup of sound-bites, daily exchanges and media droppings that form the soundtrack of the inside of our heads in this day and age. And it's brilliant.
I mean, Sean and Sally land in the most quirky, sexy, kinky, interesting, liberated city in Europe. And you know what? The dialogue inside Sean's head, about the minutiae of everyday life, is kinkier, sexier, quirkier and more interesting than the Amsterdam it finds itself in.
So buy his book, but don't buy too many copies, because he might become rich and successful and then he'd have to find another schtick. Sean would turn into another Larry David, pretending (unconvincingly) that his fabulous life annoys him. So enjoy Condon's books, but let's try to keep him a failure, because it's just better that way for all concerned. Prospective readers can borrow my copy to preserve the bitter, penniless Sean Condon we love. OK?
My 'dam pathetic unemployed life.......2005-10-14
I found this book to be a complete waste of time; the only reason I even bothered to finish it was because I had some of these (seeded?) positive reviews lingering in my mind and I kept expecting it to get better.
Although the book does offer some insight into a certain sub-culture in the Netherlands (with a sprinkling of humor here and there), I should have taken the hint from some of the previous reviews before I ordered. As others have alluded, this is more of an autobiography than a book about the city or the culture. And a worthwhile autobiography it is not - I wasn't particularly impressed with the way the author chooses to live his life as a lazy unemployed slob while his wife struggles to make ends meet.
I feel generous giving it two stars - the second star appearing mainly for the catchy title and the sporadic bits of humor.
'Dam Right.......2005-02-16
Sean Condon has written a funny, realistic picture of what it is like to live in Amsterdam. I have lived in Amsterdam and all the things he talks about are right on the money. While living in Europe's most beautiful city can be difficult, painful and frustrating, it is all worthwile to call this great city home.
This book will give you a personal insight into the Dutch culture and people. I highly recommend this for expats or anyone that enjoys travel.
