Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
It is very hard not to a like a cute talking penguin, and Breathed presumably realised this when coming up with Opus. The human characters that surround the odd animal are supposed to come off somewhat loopier. This is a fun look at the period and the politics, and highly entertaining. Aack!
Bloom County: The Beginning.......2004-06-15
Here you will find the beginning of one of the most inspired comic strips ever put to paper. No other strip made me laugh as hard, or as often, as "Bloom County". In fact, pretty much nothing else in the whole wide world made me laugh as hard as this divine creation of Mr. Berke Breathed. Here we are introduced to the Milo Bloom, Steve Dallas, Cutter John and by far the best-known comic Penguin ever - Opus.
Here we can see that Bloom County was just crackling with creativity and a real desire to "cut loose" from the beginning. Some of the strips covered "current events" and were topical, meaning circa 1980, but if you were around for any of that time it's a nostalgic trip back to the days of Boy George and when Ozzy Osbourne was best known as a singer. But the vast majority of the strips ring very true today as they deal with the absurdities of the human animal.
A word about the format: Bloom County in it's original form included both the standard "3 panel" strips that appear in your every day newspaper in black and white, plus a larger full page color version for the Sunday paper. The other Bloom County volumes (as well as Bloom's sequel "Outland") were in a larger physical book form. (Similar to what you may have seen if you're a collector of, say, Calvin and Hobbes, or Dilbert). This first volume is a smaller book (similar in format to the endless volumes of Garfield which became available). But this is where it all began, and it includes much of the "best stuff".
If you want to know what America was laughing at in 1980, this is it. But you know what? I reread these strips every so often, and they STILL make me laugh that loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see WHAT are you laughing at kind of laugh. We don't get that kind of laugh often enough. Thank you, Mr. Breathed.
The first collection of a great comic strip - great fun.......2003-08-06
This is the first collection of Bloom County cartoons and a great place to start enjoying the fun. Bloom County is a fictional place populated with as eclectic a group of characters as you will find anywhere. Eccentric humans, a talking penguin, and Bill the Cat take on the societal follies of the early eighties with a humorous point of view.
See the Rolling Stones perform for an elementary school dance. Go back to a time when Three Mile Island was in the news and Princess Diana was expecting her first child. Even if the events are distant memories, the humor is timeless.
Berke Breathed's Glory Days!.......2000-01-27
Bloom County had something special, more than just the jokes. As you read the strip, you cannot help but get involved with the characters.
Bloom County fans don't just laugh at the jokes, they care about Opus and the rest. Even Steve Dallas, the ruthless but inept lawyer, wins sympathy.
The humour tends to the wit and satire end of the cartoon spectrum with only occasional bursts of slapstick. The satire is aimed mainly at lifestyles and steroetypes rather than current events which makes it still sharp as it ages.
It is a very male-centric book. Female characters are introduced in order to give the main players a romantic interlude or to prop up some situation.
Bloom County was one of the best cartoons of its time and Loose Tails is a real gem.
A Classic that must never be parted with...except for a mill.......1999-12-15
Breathed is down right the best! these strips are funny, cynical, and timeless! They follow a chronological order so you can follow the story which gets funnier at every page. I cried for weeks when I heard that Bloom County was to be no more. The comic pages are a wasteland now, except for maybe Dilbert, that Breathed is gone.

Book Description
Bill Fortney's Great Photography Workshop is a complete how-to guide for the impassioned amateur outdoor photographer-the fastest growing segment of the market. This book is a fresh approach to the age-old desire of serious amateurs to become truly good at their chosen craft. Most books produced over the past two decades have focused either on technical considerations or the esthetics of photography. Few have integrated both important issues into one volume, and none has presented an actual course of action to help readers develop excellence at their craft. Bill Fortney's Great Photography Workshop contains actual self-assignments and field exercises to help the reader become fluent with each of the major concepts. In addition, the book addresses the emotional stumbling blocks to the learning process. A portfolio section includes work samples from serious amateurs who have followed the author's course to arrive at professional skill levels. Finally, the book contains a full bibliography of other source materials.
Customer Reviews:
could be a lot better.......2005-07-29
ordered this book from local library and glad i did not pay for it. although mr. fortney chose all the right chapter headings, their honestly is not a lot of technical information in this book. a beginner would get no information of value in really learning photography; an intermediate photographer might get some help from the "exercises'; if you are beyond these levels do not buy this book! you already know much more than is offered. although there are a few good photos, many of them have already been done (much better i might add), by other renowned photographers. i'm sorry but the digital examples are-well-bad. if you really want to learn nature or landscape photography don't bother with this-get ANY of john shaws books-they WILL make you a better photographer. also for sheer inspiration check out art wolfe. too many of the photos in this book are plagiarized from others works-see for yourself...check out the original work of the people he mentions on p184...
What "workshop?".......2004-06-13
This is an average book similar to so many photography books that give you an introduction to/overview of landscape/outdoor/nature/whatever photography. Nothing in this book sets it apart from the crowd. The "workshop" part is almost non-existent -- just a few brief, vague "self assignments" at the end of each chapter.
Could be better.......2003-11-18
If you have the chance to read the introductory pages or if you will read the recommendations from other readers - for sure you will get excited about this book. And you will feel proud for your choice in buying it:-)) For sure Bill Fortney is a good manager for the business he runs (including good knowledge of promoting his book), he may be a good professional photographer but this book could be better. Interestening details are extremely poor or just mentioned in hurry. This is why I believe beginners could find much better books and advanced amateurs either. Try "John Shaw's Nature Photography Field Guide" and you will have a *****book!
Makes you excited about photography.......2003-09-09
A short flip through the pages of this book and it soon becomes obvious that Bill Fortney is undoubtedly a master photographer. Inside "Bill Fortney's Great Photography Workshop" you will find page after page of sound photographic advice complete with illustrations and examples. While it is a technical presentation in many aspects, he also clearly shows that great photography is every bit as much an art form as it is a technical knowledge. Besides discussions of such things as shutter speed and aperture and how they affect the picture he delves into the importance of the right light, composition, seeing with an artistic eye, and using filters (especially the effect of a good polarizing filter). If you like photography you will leave the book excited about the possibilities before you as you apply what you have learned. This is a highly recommended read for any photography enthusiast.
Take a SIP, Stunning, Inspirational, Photography!!.......2003-07-18
Excellent, well written. This is definitely a photo course in book form. From the inclusion of amateurs' work to the use of a pleasently large font this book does exactly what it sets out to do- improve your photography. The self assignments (of which I have already done some and do without realising it) , which are easy to do are instructive and provide immediate feedback in many cases. The tone of the book is straightforward, informative, humorous and down to earth, a rarity. At the worst the pictures will inspire to get up and go shooting, at the best after trying the assignments and treating it like the text it is, your photography should improve.

Insightful.......2001-02-25
The Story of Two Kingdoms is a more in depth teaching of the Integral Way. There is significant use of spiritual metaphors in this book. Interpretating them as lilereal examples will limit a persons understanding; and may leave someone perplexed. I make a recomendation for this book, only till simplier works have been studied and understood first. This book helps is disolving contradictory thinking, through the attainment of harmony.

Through prose, pictures and poems, this book gives one the "feel" of truely being a North Carolinian. Even if you have never visited the state, you can laugh, cry and dream as Charles Kuralt paints picture words of his home. A lovely relaxing read.

A timeless treasure of collected wisdom.......2003-01-11
Compiled and edited by Ralph Grizzle, Charles Kuralt's People is an anthology of newspaper columns written in 1956 by Charles Kuralt, who was then a print journalist with the Charlotte News. From a newspaper columnist, Kuralt went on to join the fledgling CBS network and became a household name in American television influenced culture. The timeless treasure that is his collected wisdom and recorded insights remains as fresh, eye-opening, and timely today, as it was nearly fifty years ago. An intellectually stimulating collection of insightful and occasionally poignant commentaries, Charles Kuralt's People is very highly recommended reading for students of the human condition in general, and legions of Charles Kuralt fans in particular.
Book Description
Time magazine once hailed Charles Kuralt as "the laureate of the common man." and in this final collection. Kuralt once again portrays the people, the places, and the things that define our nation. Culled from his final project, a series of brief television essays in the spirit of his famous On the Road reports, Charles Kuralt's American Moments introduces a host of American characters and scenes, and imbues them with charm, simplicity, and elegance. From the dedication of the man who handcrafts the president's shoes to the quiet beauty of a covered bridge, they are all symbols of an American spirit that Kuralt spent his life chronicling, celebrating, and, most importantly, just noticing.
Customer Reviews:
America As It Was........2004-12-13
This book is filled with short accounts of diverse "American Moments" grouped in ten areas. This is a sampling. Each reader would do a completely different review as there is so much to choose from to make an interesting account.
The Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, built in 1914, was a beautiful railroad palace through which half the soldiers of this country passed Dec. 7, the day word came of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The interior, from the insert photograph, looks a lot like the magnificent station in Washington, D.C. Back then, the idea was to create grand buildings for everyday citizens. At the street entrance, there on the sidewalk, stood a tall ornate black clock like the one which graced Knoxville's Gay Street for several decades. Ours was recently moved by the owners of a jewelry store to the new location west of town, a lavish edifice, and yet the clock has yet to be put up. They claimed it because it had stood in front of the downtown store. There is now a campaign to replace it there among the brew pubs, martini bars, and loft apartments where the downtowners hang out. Somehow, it will lack the 'dignity' of the original.
There are two photos of Becky Davis of Tennessee making cotton candy at a Fair. Invented in the 1920s (Karault says by a dentist), it is sticky spun sugar in pretty colors. It takes experience to flip it just right to keep from being covered by the gooey stuff. He wonders what folks ate at fairs and carnivals before cotton candy came along. In the 1980s, funnel cakes made an appearance at the World's Fair in Knoxville. I have yet to eat my first one (not even a taste), though I was tempted at the 2004 Fair -- missed the chance as time was short and I had to run to catch a bus.
The country's smallest p.o. is shown free-standing about the size of a well house in Ochopee, Florida. It may be tiny but has its own historical marker on a stand right outside on the road; a regular size postal drop box is beside the building wher it is encouraged the customers use for mailing their post cards and envelopes. Inside, of course, Naomi Lewis will be glad to sell stamps. From the photo, I see they had room by her counter for the "most wanted" criminals pictures, a staple of post offices everywhere. Our smallest here is at Knoxville Center mall in a corner beside the offices where you can get your driver's license and car tags. It even has room for packages which I usually mail there, as one of the two 'old' postal clerks told me, "here, you can be first in line." Now, that's a plus.
Before that, U. S. A. had The Pony Express which began in St. Joseph, Missouri, to deliver mail overland all the way to California, 2,000 miles in ten days. At the Pony Express Museum, on the wall is an early want ad: "Wanted -- Young, Skinny, Wiry Fellows. Not Over Eighteen. Must Be Expert Rider. Willing to Risk Death Daily. Orphans Preferred." This enterprise lasted only a year and a half until the completion of the telegraph. There is a bronze statue of a young rider on a horse (in flight) there at St. Joseph where Gary Chilcote, director of the Patee House Museum, explained: "they rode through Kansas and Nebraska, dipped into Colorado, and across Wyoming, Nevada, Utan and dropped down into California.
This historian tells the story of Jesse James' demise. Jesse was the first outlaw in the American West, right after the Civil War. He and his gang robbed trains and banks. There is a photo of the small house where Bob Ford, one of the gang members, shot Jesse behind the right ear as he attempted to straighten a picture on a wall on April 3, 1882. Kuralt wrote, "Die a law-abiding citizen and you will be remembered for a time. Die a desperado and you will be remembered for all time." The last of Jesse James, killed by one of his own gang, was an American Moment to Remember.
It looked bigger than life in the movie version. A hatmaker he interviewed shows a bow being put on a cowboy hat for which the movies made popular. "All self-respecting cowboy hats have bows on them" (similar to those little things you see on the front of most bras). They have to or you're not a cowboy. That's as close as you can get to the meaning of this symbol in a word. A cowboy hat demands respect.
My favorite cowboy, Lash LaRue, included me in his program at the East Tennessee Fair when Al Curtis brought him here (a big thing back then). Lash dressed in black and always wore a black hat. Our local cowboy, Marshal Andy Smalls, advises his t.v. fans to 'wear a white hat, so we will know the good guys.' I've always yearned for a blue one, but bought it for my little cowboy (Justin at age 4 or 5) whom the girls all liked at the library costume party.
This fact-filled book, published after Charles Kuralt's death (7-4-97), was edited by Peter Freudlich, his friend and writer-producer for CBS News, where Charles worked for 37 years. He won many honors for his "on the road" journalism, and I enjoyed his features on 'CBS Sunday Morning.' In the Foreward, written by Charles Osgood, he calls Charles Kuralt, native son of North Carolina, an 'explorer' as he covered the back roads of this country to find real Americans and their unique stories.
Good Grief.......2000-07-26
The editing for 90 seconds of television was too severe for the treasured scenes to work as effectively in book form. Am I just still too sad at our loss to fill in the gaps? Though disappointed I read on and on. No doubt you will too. Kuralt was a quintessential American treasure himself.
Great Moments of Reading.......2000-01-27
Great reading! As I read the pages of American Moments I canhear the voice of Charles Kuralt. I recommend it for all ages and it is very uplifting.

Beautiful American word pictures painted by Kuralt.......1998-12-20
Kuralt is an American treasure. His essays, word pictures ofAmerica, take on a special quality when heard on tape. All of his essays are his legacy--to remind us of the amazing nature of American society and of the need for a new crop of American writers to find the hidden jewels of Americana.
Book Description
A fascinating account of a British woman's epic journey, cycling round the globe fron East to West. Using historical routes as her inspiration, Anne Mustoe followed the ancient Roman roads to Lisbon, travelled with the Conquistadors across South America, pursued Captain Cook over the Pacific to Australia and Indonesia and followed the caravans along the fabled Silk Road from Xi'an back to Rome.
Full of exciting stories of police arrest, the threat of guerillas and attacks by wild dogs, Lone Traveller is an engrossing tale one woman's experiences on a remarkable journey.
Customer Reviews:
She's an Inspiration.......2006-03-06
I picked up this book about a year ago because it was unique. It was about cycle touring and written by a woman. As I read I became more and more impressed with Anne Mustoe's travel accomplishments and hope to be able to emulate these in my own travels.
This book does not discuss a particular journey, rather it talks about different types of things that she encountered on multiple trips and the people she encountered along the way. She acknowledged in the beginning of the book that another book about scenery would not be appreciated and that it is, as much as we don't want to admit, not fun reading for those who didn't go on the journey. I appreciated the insight on situations and the story-telling aspect.
This book should inspire people to take their own trips, especially women who think "I could never do that, I don't know how to fix a bike" or "I'm too old" or "I can't find anyone to go with". Anne has defied all of the misconceptions of what it takes to travel adventurously.
Kind of dry writing..........2005-11-18
I found this book to be a bit dry reading - not enough pictures and she gets bogged down in boring details. I do admire the author for bicycling, for the most part, on her own, and in dealing with the people of the land, without incident.
Lone Traveller: 1 Woman, 2 Wheels and the World.......2001-02-10
I had the great opportunity to meet Anne Mustoe on my recent travels in Mali, West Africa. She is a great lady and I could hardly wait to get home and read her 2 books. I couldn't put them down. Her descriptions are animated, entertaining and humorous. They are filled with lots of great advice for any traveller who wants to go everywhere, whether on bike or not. She provides an insight into cultures that only a traveller going through many different countries in succession can provide. It is not hard for me to imagine her in Italy or the Gobi desert pedalling along. I anxiously look forward to her next book 2 Wheels in the Dust.
Around the world -- again!.......2000-07-23
When I heard that Anne Mustoe had written a second book on her travels, I just had to have it. Her first book "A Bike Ride" is one of my favourite travel books, read and re-read over the years.
At age 54, she left her job and set out alone to circle the globe on her bicycle (as detailed in "A Bike Ride"). Once was not enough for the intrepid Mustoe, however, and at 60 she embarked on a second world cycle tour which she describes in "Lone Traveller". Starting from the Colosseum in Rome, she followed Roman Roads to Lisbon. From there she travelled the routes of the Conquitadores across South America, followed in the footsteps of Austrailan explorers through the Outback and embarked on the fabled Silk Road from China to the Mediterranean.
Anne Mustoe is intelligent, articulate and literate. A scholar and former headmistress, her expolits are told in an engaging and delightful fashion. She brings a freshness and immediacey to her writing, unlike the cynical observations of many world-weary travel writers. Mustoe is delighted to immerse herself in new countries and cultures, but without sugar-coating the difficulties met and sumounted along the way. Her amazing joureys make for a breathtaking read -- I had great difficulty in putting this book down.
