Increasing urban sprawl throughout Western Europe is giving rise to more and more areas characterized by a diffuse urbanization or urban network. In After Sprawl, the Brussels-based firm of Xaveer de Geyter Architects examines this phenomenon by focusing on six such areas: London, England; Randstad, Holland; Brussels-Antwerp-Ghent, Belgium; the Ruhr area, Germany; Zurich-Basle, Switzerland; and the Veneto region, Italy. Their research distills a method for analysing the spatial hallmarks of today's city, replacing old urban strategies with new methodologies appropriate to the new questions being raised by these new types of cities. With a modest batch of projects to their name, Xaveer de Geyter Architects have amassed an international reputation for unpretentious architecture and urban design born of a discerning and radical strategy. De Geyter himself is noted for his longterm practice with OMA, the office of Rem Koolhaas.

This book has lots of good information and fairly comprehensive text, but I was very disappointed in the poor quality of the photographs. They seem to be snapshots rather than professional photographs illustrating techniques and equipment.

This book covers EVERYTHING - and in great detail. It's up to date and has many pictures and drawings. I found it to be extremely helpful. Many ideas as to directions one that may expand in their love for this craft. Identifies tools and equipment currently available, by name, through most stained glass retailers - making it fairly easy to apply the techiques presented.

This book is 1998's new updated version of the first two editions that have been long considered the "bible" in stained glass since the opening of the crafts movement of the 60's and 70's. "How To Work In Stained Glass 3" opens with a brief history and description of types of glass to aid in selection for projects. The chapters cover a wide variety of topics but for example, the Tool and How to Score chapters explain the variety of tools and how to safely use them to cut glass. The following chapters go into design and the basic types of assembly (copper foil or lead)and much more to help someone just starting develop good work habits and proper techniques to make lasting glass items that they'd be proud to display. The projects in the book can be done by following the detailed instructions with plenty of helpful information of how and why certain methods make a better glass item. The information contained in this book will make crafting glass easier and more enjoyable. HTWISG 3 gives further info on new products, views on teaching and lead safety in the work area. The conversational style of writing makes this an easy read. It's like sitting with the Isenbergs and the contributing artists as they share their years of experience and how-to knowlege with someone who is in the process of learning or wanting to explore new techniques in working with glass.

Not for beginners.......1999-04-26

This book is a must read eventually because of its incredibly detailed account of glass working. However, it is a poor book for beginners. Very few and old pictures are a blaring tell tale sign, as is the fact that they seem to make stained glass a lot more complicated than it needs to be for the beginner. If you're looking for a good starter book, keep looking!

The Definitive Guide to Kirlian Photography.......2001-02-19

This book is _the_ guide for making Kirlian devices and taking Kirlian photographs. I had absolutely no background in Kirlian photography, but by following the instructions, I was able to set up a basic Kirlian device where I shot some amazing pictures, in very little time I might add. The instructions are clear, and the diagrams are simple and straight forward. After experimenting with the first device for a while, I went on to make the book's second, more advanced, device. Again, it was easy to build and use, with some awe-inspiring results.

However, this is not simply just a how-to book. There is also a lot of background information on Kirlian photography, how and why it works, possible future uses, and the medical/biological aspects of Kirlian photographs. After reading through the book, I was left with more than just a few home-made pretty pictures, I was left with the understanding necessary to truly enjoy the magnificent beauty of a glowing aura that is characteristic of Kirlian photography.

It should also be noted that this book also includes a chapter on the infamous "phantom leaf" experiment, which proved to be the most interesting part of the book. It gives a special circuit that can be used to test the theory of the phantom leaf (the theory that, when part of a leaf is cut away before photographing, that part may be seen lightly in the photograph). Quite an amazing bit of bio-technology.

The date: just slightly in the future. The mission: Self-Defense Force Rescue Sqad 4 is looking for survivors after Tokyo's latest earthquake. Rei and her partner Uozumi are the only ones to survive when their team uncovers violence that was not quake caused. Conspiracy and secrets have alienated Rei and Uozumi from their former lives, now they must get to the heart of the dark plots that destroyed the rest of their team, with the help of a private hostage rescue organization run out of a Shinjuku bar called Chicago.

Tam-Tam has created a strong, well drawn and well-paced action manga with a great heroine. For any reader who has wished to escape the overly cute girls in skirts with killer weapons and find something a little more realistic in shojo adventure, this may be just the thing. Rei is a motorcyle riding action-adventure heroine with an attitude who needs no protection. She's out to protect others and rediscover herself in the process. The artist's drawings are simple and sparing, without much ornament, but the overall effect is elegant and works well for the manga. Flowing lines and an elegant sense of motion and style maintain the feel. The overall story is dark, and gritty, but does not get weighed down with psychological issues and philosophies. In the end, the action is the story.

The action adventure tale does have its share of humor and chibi moments, especially in the form of Dr. Thunder Sanders, who seems to be Tam Tam's very own avatar in the work. Unlike some futuristic works, this one is not really mecha in any sense-the time frame remains fairly close to the current one and most of the technology is familiar, although advanced. Likewise, there is no magic in this series. It remains pure action adventure throughout. This is the first book of a short two-book manga Chicago series only recently translated for the North American market. The artist/author is the creator of several acclaimed female-focused manga series, but this is the first one to hit American shores. We can only hope more are on their way.

Chicago is good but it is only two volumes, not enough time for the characters to fully develope in my option and to many unanwereds questions. Are they dead or alive, will her and the straight guy ever get anywhere or is she going to remain hung up on her gay partner?? Questions, Questions.

Chicago is a fantasic series full of twists, turns and great character devolpment. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys any type of manga =D

Wonderful Supplement.......2000-07-19

The Chicago Chronicles, a story supplement for Vampire the Masquerade, consists of three volumes. There are many game sessions worth playing in the three volumes and spectacular city guides to Chicago and Milwakee.

The second volume provides an updated city guide of chicago which details all of the major players left in the city after the adventure "Under a Blood Red Moon"--which is also included in this volume.

The adventure is quite stimulating, featuring an all out war between Lupines and Vampires in Chicago. Whereas the city guide provides all one needs to know to role play a campaign in Campaign.

While this volume can probably stand on its own, it is very helpful to have the first volume as well. The first volume helps to acclimate the players to Chicago prior to having to engage in a challenging all out war in the city.

The odd thing about the three volume set is that the adventures detailed in the third volume seem to chronologically come before the events set in the second volume.

Again, these are wonderful supplements that are great to revolve a role playing campaign around. But, if nothing else, they are also fun reading that can inspire any other campaign.

Fascinating book.......2007-02-13

Erlick's book is a journey through Irma Flaquer's life and Guatemala's history from the 40's to the 80's. It is also an accurate and careful reconstruction of local conflicts between government and guerrilla as well as of part of Guatemalan press freedom struggle on the 20th century. The book is filled with details and Flaquer's insights. It is impossible to put down.

Fascinating story, meticulously documented........2005-02-05

This book is difficult to put down. This is a story about an amazingly brave and determined woman who was passionate about her country and her right to express herself and ended up paying for that passion with her life. Erlick has done a magnificent job of chronicling both her story and that of Guatemala during one of its most turbulant eras. She is a great writer who obviously feels deeply for Flaquer, the people of Guatemala and all of Latin America.

This is a fascinating and fantastic read. As an American living in Guatemala, it had the added benefit of helping me to understand (really, for the first time) a less chronicled but no less interesting period of Guatemala's recent history: that from 1954 to 1978.

I can't believe the way I was drawn into the world of this book. I do not have an educational background of Latin American studies. As much as "Disappeared" covers Guatemala's history, the book is also a story about a young woman who takes up journalism, and then keeps on writing, even when it threatens her safety. Without spoiling the plot, Irma Flaquer has so many opportunities to walk away from her journalistic career, but her passion won't let her. "Disappeared" is terribly haunting, but I also think it's a hopeful story, and I can't seem to get it out of my mind. As a freelance journalist myself, it has made me question the merit of the types of things I spend my time writing about.

If you're looking for a book about an incredible female figure, this is it. I loved the way the author is able to make Irma's character come out so vividly, while at the same time giving the reader a sense of the political backdrop against which the events occurred. The book is also incredibly engaging -- it's one of those books that I keep thinking about, and wanting to jump back into. Each time I realize I have already finished it, I'm sad that I can't go home and read some more. It must have been incredibly exciting to have uncovered this story!

I bought this book as a gift for my son who is taking flying lessons and working at a small airport. I had read Bach's stories separately and liked them all. My son loved it! It makes a lovely gift.

If you love flying. . .or love someone who loves flying. . .this is the book to get.......2006-06-21

This work is an "omnibus" edition of Richard Bach's three great classics on flying. Readers familiar with Bach tend to think of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" (any of us in college in the 70s remember that one!) but long before Jonathan took wing, Bach had his own flying adventures, first as a military pilot during the early years of the cold war, and then, remarkably as a "barnstormer" flying an antique plane around the country. These three books recount those adventures of his earlier years.

I first discovered them when learning to fly in my early twenties. Time, circumstances, life in general took me away from my passion of flying until recently, when I again took to the air in a light weight aircraft and am just about finished with restoring a light weight replica of a P-51 Mustang. I fell back into Bach's works and discovered, yet again, all the wonderful memories, and yes, telling me as well about why, after a bit of a gut tightening moment when something doesn't feel right with the plane, I take a deep breath and behold, there is the splendor of the world below me at dawn, the beauty of circling a cloud that no one, before or ever after, will see as I now see it, and that sweet sense of being one with my plane as I slide into final approach and touch the earth again.

If you love flying, this is your book. If you love someone who loves flying (and can't figure out exactly why they do such crazy things!) buy this book, read it, get the insights, then hand it over to the pilot who will be thrilled that you now "understand."

I am delighted that Bach's three great works are back out there again in this single edition.
