Why bother.......2005-10-05
After reading the pages in the "Look Inside" section I almost want to walk away from my 16 year career as a designer and become an accountant. This book seems like it will be far to pessimistic to spend my money on.
A fine collection of essays with little editorial overview.......2001-01-09
This book is a fine collection of articles and essays with little editorial supervision. The breadth of the articles means that you're sure to find something useful to your interests whether you be freelancer or corporate design director. There are even sample contracts.
However, this book is very poorly edited. The "its" vs. "it's" confusion runs rampant throughout (just to name one example) and there are more typos than I would expect to find in a book written for a detail-oriented audience such as designers. Sloppy.
Also, quite a bit of the material is out of date. If you're looking for something that speaks to professional design practices as they relate to the World Wide Web, this is _not_ your book. Very few of the articles in this book deal with the web at all, and those that do tangentially touch upon the Internet sound like they were written in 1995.
Great Reference Book for Designers.......2000-04-05
I found this book to be extremely informative when I began freelancing in web design. There were a lot of great tips and guidelines for dealing with clients. In came in very handy for me recently when I needed to draw up a contract in a pinch.

Customer Reviews:
Vey basic information.......2007-05-08
I thought the book was helpfull in that it explained the chemical basis of water soluable oils and had a fairly thorough overview of the products on the market. I thought that the book leaned too heavily on the history of oil painting and basic information regarding supports, brushes, knives, etc. I would have liked to have seen more examples of the work of artists with the stature of Kevin McPherson and also more discussion of how these artists overcome the differences between water soluable oils and traditional oils.
Now I know how to procede! A thorough explanation........2006-07-16
"Painting with Water Soluble Oils" supplied me with what I wanted. A text by a an experienced practitioner in the medium, well-credentialed, successful, and wanting to spread the word (along with spreading the oils!) about this relatively new item. When I started painting, I was not so aware of the TOXCICITY of the paint as I was of my desire to USE the paint in a manner I found at least acceptable. Years later, the latest grimly discouraging news on greenhouse gasses, global warming, and newly-found carcinogens appear in the daily papers----and in the courts. I'm not an alarmist, but I thought "water soluble oils, hmmm, can this possibly work?". Thus, Dye's book told me all of what I needed to know. Of course there are pages on the components of the product, its development, and requisite scientific explanations. The science of safety in the home, the studio, the environment and its impact on our kids made this necessary.
Beyond that, I needed to see just how the stuff behaves on a gessoed surface. Dye has what I'd call a painterly style, almost abstract at times, but it's a loose and defiantly colorlful style, with examples chosen to teach. Hey, I'm sure he wants to sell his works, but he is a teacher by trade when he writes.
Anyway, I am delighted with the comparative safety of the new medium, with the courage I gained to try many techniques, brushes, knives, etc. I also continue to maintain respect for the pigments themselves. Heck, I'm not smearing it around with my fingers. My money was well spent, and I'd recommend this book because the main purpose of the text was to "git 'er DONE." Mission accomplished, IMHO. Buy, shop, paint, enjoy, plus you can inhale during fits of creativity and still run for president.
Well researched, but lacking.......2005-09-07
I feel a lot of the book was redundant, too much repetiton was used -- I believe it was to fluff up the page count. I'm new to oil painting all together and was looking for a book that would teach me to paint with this medium - for example, help me understand when I would thin with water, or when with watersoluable linseed oil. I thought that the promised "step by step demonstrations" would do that. Contained in only one chapter of the book, they seem almost an afterthought, and do not go into enough depth.
There is an entire chapter devoted to "what is watersoluable oil color?" There are 20 pages -- which is far too much information -- about the properties of every watersoluable oil paint by color and manufacturer, though there are some useful demos of the various marks different brushes and knives make.
The book contains more than I want or need to know about the processes by which watersoluable oils are created.
By far the lengthiest chapter is the one which showcases 14 different artists who try out this medium and provide some tips, which may be useful. But I believe its primary purpose is as a showcase for the various artists. There are some useful tips here, but much of what is said is repetition from one artist to another - and that gets boring! In some ways I am more confused than ever, having learned that some of the artists shown aren't painting soley with watersoluable oil paint - they are using the oils in combination with watercolor or acrylics or sometimes using all three together!
Useless.......2004-05-08
About half this book discusses unique properties of water soluble oil paints, but I learned more from reading the paint manufacturers' brochures as I did from this book. The rest of the book discusses and demonstrates various techniques, but it doesn't cover anything different than what you'd find in standard oil painting text, and there are many better ones of those. Don't bother buying this book.
A Definite Yes.......2004-05-01
The book had all the information needed on the 4 types of water soluble oils..and anything you needed to know about them...brushes, mediums, whatever you need. Really good to get started and what equipment you will need and how it works...
Very happy I bought it.

Book Description
My Times: A Memoir of Dissent is a critical look at The New York Times from the inside. John Hess worked at the paper for twenty-four years as an editor, rewrite man, foreign correspondent, investigative reporter, and food critic, from the "Fin-Biz" section to the doomed Paris -edition, to the Middle East and back. In his tenure, Hess rubbed shoulders and butted heads with some of the notable figures of journalism from the last fifty years: Cyrus Sulzberger and his cousin Punch, A.M. Rosenthal, Seymour Hersh, David Halberstam, Scotty Reston, Max Frankel, Anthony Lewis, Hodding Carter, and many others. But this isn't a lives of the saints; reporters, to Hess's observation, mostly churned out unambitious, unquestioning copy. And when they didn't, editors would "fix" it. Hess's damning conclusion:
"The Times was never â~the greatest newspaper in the world,' nor even very good except, like the vicar's egg, in spots. . . . The Times succeeded because advertisers valued its readership and because readers respected its explicit commitment to integrity and its implicit role as the voice of the establishment."
Hess argues that the paper deliberately fudged its coverage of Vietnam at a crucial turn. He revisits the close association of the Sulzberger publishing family with the world leaders the newspaper purported to cover objectively. Later Hess shows that the Times was far better acquainted with the jet-set than with its neglected backyard; few at the paper in the 1970s seemed able to pick out the Bronx on a map.
My Times is not without warmth for the Good Gray Lady. And Hess notes that working for "the most influential paper in the world" gave him a platform to pursue various campaigns for justice, a few of which he recaps here.
John Hess is a veteran newspaperman and the author of Vanishing France and The Case for De Gaulle. Following his "retirement" Hess freelanced for The Nation and Grand Street, and continues his role as media watchdog with a daily spot on WBAI's Pacifica, New York public radio.
Customer Reviews:
Informed, Passionate and Motivating!.......2005-08-28
"Halleluya! On this 26th day of May, 2004, the New York Times confessed to having helped promote the lies that got us into war with Iraq."
"We should fire Rumsfeld, and Cheney, and Bush, and the whole pack of warmakers today -- not tomorrow or next month -- today. "
"Politicians hire brains. Telling them what to say and how to say it is a big business and getting bigger all the time."
"People who are under the illusion that the Times is a liberal paper should read its editorial today. It says moving good jobs abroad is 'freeing up American capital, labor and other resources for more efficient, high-value uses.' "
----John Hess, from wbai.org
I consider John Hess one of the most important voices in contemporary America. His words and what we are able to learn from them, should motivate us to open our eyes to the corruption and hypocrisy in our nation. The realization that more people recognize the name of a hate monger like Rush Limbaugh than the name of John Hess, illustrates the manufactured ignorance that those in power would prefer. Only through education will we effectively address what is wrong in the U.S. I find John Hess to be an educator who is informed, passionate and motivating!
A Great Writer About The NY Times And His Times.......2004-01-07
I bought Mr. Hess' book out of curiosity. I knew Mr. Hess from the days when he was a commentator on a local TV station before Rupert Murdoch bought the station and destroyed it. I expected to try the book and give up after 50 or so pages. Well, I couldn't put it down! Mr. Hess is a very good writer who never bores you.
I lived through the years that he writes about. He explains for me many of the things that I felt were not right about those years as well as the lack of reporting by The New York Times. I have to ask myself where my head was during that period.
I highly recommend this book. It gave me an eye-opening view of The New York Times, politicians, and the sad level of reporting in the United States. It should be required reading by reporters and would-be reporters.
Stripping the Times Bare.......2003-11-30
With a diamond-hard honesty rare, if not unique, among today's journalists, John L. Hess has written a memoir that deflates the gas-filled balloon that is the New York Times. A reporter and editor for the Times for 24 years, Hess shows how from the moment Adolph Ochs purchased the newspaper in 1896 it has cozied up to corrupt politicans and wealthy businessmen. In a blurb on the jacket, Kurt Vonnegut terms the newspaper a "mighty crowd-control engine," and indeed Hess provides many examples of the Times leading the way in suppressing news and information that might educate the public as to how they are being bilked. No one could read this book and still think that the Times is a liberal, much less an honest, newspaper.

Book Description
With a supporting cast of well-known literary names around him, Newhouse is the king of New York's cultural world todayas owner of Random House, the nation's largest book publishing empire; publisher of such influential magazines as "The New Yorker," "Vanity Fair," "Vogue," and "Wired;" and by controlling dozens of other newspapers, magazines, and cable television franchises in the United States and around the world.
Author Thomas Maier examines the rags-to-riches saga of the Newhouse family and how they built a privately-held empire estimated at $13 billion. He tells the personal story of how "Si" Newhouse emerged from the shadow of his demanding father to expand the family fortune further than anyone ever imagined, with his mercurial "off-with-their-heads" management style.
This unauthorized investigative biography explores Newhouse's reliance on his long-time friend Roy Cohn, a lawyer for the Mafia and a confidant to top politicians, and how the family managed to beat the IRS in a $1 billion tax battle. Like a message in a time bottle, "Newhouse" describes our celebrity-driven media age, a real-life allegory for the 1990s when communications giants like Newhouse's Advance Publications, Inc., gobbled up everything in sight. This book raises strong warnings about a media monopoly in America, controlled by a handful of powerful men like Si Newhouse, and underlines the serious ways in which journalism has been transformed.
Customer Reviews:
Critical Media Biography.......2002-09-25
This is a biography as much of a media empire as it is of a man. While Maier spends as much time as he can on the private side of S.I. Newhouse Jr., he in the end focus on what is most seen of this most private of media moguls-- his media properties.
Maier uses the device of choosing figures and brands important to Newhouse history (Roy Cohn, Random House, Tina Brown, the New Yorker) and spending a chapter on each one, tracing their history in relation to both Newhouse and Advance Publications. While a good device for giving a thorough overview, be warned that it does make for a slightly disconnected read. I found that I had to flip back through the chapters to remember how events relating to particular chapters related to each other in time.
Nonetheless, one of the more complete media biographies you are likely to encounter and a must read if interested in magazine history.
An Important but Neglected Book.......2000-06-23
The book shows how American media are controlled by a single family company. It owns many of the famous and influential publishing companies, magazines, and newspapers. It is a very dangerous situation that American media are under control by the handful people. As a matter of fact, the author mentioned in the paperback edition that the Newhouse company banned any mention of this book in their publications. The book, which won the 1995 "best media book" prize, seems to be neglected, but this is a very important book that more people should read. A sole purpose of media isn't a simple means of entertainment for people, and isn't mere profit organizations for the owner either. Media have the responsibility to execute the social role, and its fair execution is questionable under such a monopoly situation. The author proposes not-for-profit newspapers, and I believe it is time to consider to go back to such a fundamental point. Through various incidents the Newhouse company have initiated, the book leads us to consider what media mean to us. It is a very good book to think what true journalism means to us.
