Book Description
More than ever before, architecture at the beginning of the 21st century is changing and evolving at lightning speed. Appropriated, chewed up, mulled over, digested, contemplated, and contorted - gathering up along the way fashion, ecology, politics, and art - architectural concepts become veritable things unto themselves in the present tense. As astoundingly diverse as contemporary architecture is, most importantly it is a reflection of what's happening right now all over the world, in people's minds and in the global collective consciousness.
The many faces of world architecture today make for a mind-expanding book. Here you'll find the most recent work of over 60 architects and firms, including familiar names such as O. Gehry, Meier, Ando, Foster, and Starck, as well as a host of newcomers sure to be the architecture-celebrities of future generations. Highlights include Jakob & MacFarlane's morphological Restaurant at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Diller & Scofidio's "Blur Building" proposal for the International Expo 2001 in Switzerland (an ovular structure suspended over a lake, encapsulated by a fine mist of water, creating the look of a cloud hovering over the lake), and Herzog & de Meuron's remarkable Tate Modern. Proving that contemporary architecture is not limited to physical building design, New York firm Asymptote's Guggenheim Virtual Museum is also included, a place where visitors can take a cyber-stroll through rooms that are designed to be "compelling spatial environments." Presented alphabetically by architect or firm, Architecture Now! can be used like a reference guide, with extensive photographs and illustrations, biographical and contact information for designers, and a careful selection of today's most influential architects.

Art, architecture, and more........2007-08-29
This is a nice little coffee table styled book on architecture and artwork, showcasing about 92 architects and a few of their works. Its small size makes it easy to take along with you wherever you go.
Each architect gets two pages devoted to them, comprising a brief biography highlighting some of their notable works, as well as photos and/or sketches showcasing one or two of their works.
Some of the architects and works featured include Alberto Campo Baeza (Center for innovative technologies in Majorca), Will Bruder (Byrne residence in Arizona), Frank Gehry (Experience Music Project in Seattle), Arata Isokazi (Shizuoka convention and arts center in Shizuoka), Polshek Partnership (the very space age Rose center for earth & science in New York), and Richard Rogers (Law courts in Bordeaux, and Millennium Dome in London).
A good book.

Architectural Review.......2007-01-18
The author of this book has done a fine job of showcasing recent modern architectural projects of interest to the general population, as well as to architects and structural engineers working in the profession. I am a structural engineer, and I purchased the book because two of my friends, and one of their projects, are featured in the book. I also happened to work on that paticular project, and was interested in having a published record of the project along with my own project files. The book is well written, has wonderful photographs, and is a fine addition to the genre of "coffee table architecture books". Mr. Jodidio is to be commended for writing this book.
ARCH 4.......2006-11-03
Despite of being on of the most interesting book which gather many architects and many styles, this fourth version is not as good as the other 3, although it reflect the kind of architecture being used at this moment all over the world.
still waiting.......2006-07-31
I ordered this book on 6/30/2006, and here we are 1 month later, and still nothing. I have been notified twice to "update my order". which basically meant to approve yet another delay for my package. I love Taschen books, I would love it even more if i could get the darn thing.
Customer Reviews:
Nice coffee table book about a single house.......2005-07-20
Ken Tate's firm designs new houses along classical lines - this one is a French inspired estate built in a small Mississippi town. The photos are nice and include images of the house inside and out as well as the grounds. Numerous photos show small details of the design and workmanship. Simple floor plans as well as elevations of the house and details are included. Credits are provided for craftsmen and companies that did much of the work. I'ts nice to see that someone still cares about the details and craftsmen are still arround to build something like this even in an out of the way location.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Resource for artists!.......2004-08-07
I'm a long time fan of Courtney Davis' celtic art books and this book is even better than I expected it to be.
The designs are from carvings, manuscripts, metalwork and other sources. They are easily adaptable for needlework, painting, fabric painting and numerous other arts and crafts.
The best thing about the book is the duplication of each design, first as a clear black-and-white line drawing and then as a vibrant colour-filled design.
What an inspirational book!

Book Description
A mind-bending package of madcap hi-jinx following the exploits of one of America's underground superstars, Wild Man Fischer. First serialized in Dennis P. Eichhorn's Real Stuff in the early '90s, this collection, written by Eichhorn and rendered by artist J.R. Williams, also contains an all-new episode illustrated by Holly K. Tuttle, as well as essays by Williams and outsider-music maven, Irwin Chusid, and over a dozen previously unpublished photos of Mr. Fischer.
Book Description
The hilarious adventures of a real-live National Enquirer Senior Reporter as she met the huge challenges of covering the world's biggest stories, about the world's most famous celebrities, for the world's mightiest tabloid newspaper.
Here are one girl reporter's bold antics and escapades in glamorous locations around the world, with fabulous stars like Frank Sinatra, Richard Burton, Burt Reynolds and a galaxy more. Sternig answers for the first time, the two questions most-asked of her during her two decades as an Enquirer staffer in Hollywood: Is any of that stuff true? (and) How do you get that stuff? What results is a fascinating, engrossing, and very entertaining first-ever peek into how those tabloids really work and what the stars are really like.
Actress Liz Sheridan, who played Jerry Seinfeld's mom on "Seinfeld" (and herself the author of "Dizzy & Jimmy") said..."I tried to put this damn book down and couldn't."

Now I Know How They Do It.......2007-09-10
I recently met Barbara Sternig on a cruise and in the course of our conversation she mentioned her previous occupation and that she had written a book about it. Naturally my curiosity was aroused so I purchased the book.
I found it to be very humourous, informative and it let me have an 'inside' peek at what tabloid writers really have to contend with to 'get their story'. It was written in a very easy style and kept your interest from page to page.
The people she talks about in the book are easily recognizable and this makes the book even more exciting to read.
Anyone who has ever seen or read these tabloid papers will find this book very interesting and I recommend it to anyone who has an 'inquiring mind and wants to know'......
Ok, but not enough.......2004-11-02
When I started reading this book I expected tons of juicy gossip. I got some, but not enough and too much about this reporter and her relationship with her boss and gripes about working for this rag. I have to say there is SOME gossip of interest, but over all, just not enough. The book should be far bigger, considering her 20 years working for the paper.
Useful inside look, although dated and pulls punches.......2004-07-30
Sternig spends much time gushing over herself and her exciting life. She's disingenuous, dishing dirt on celebs, then claiming she admires them. And she pulls punches. She worked for the Enquirer from 1975-95, yet concentrates on 1970s celebs now safely dead: Frank Sinatra, Richard Burton, Tammy Wynette. Blurbs from B-list celebs and players further indicate that she pulls punches.
But she does provide useful info on tabloid undercover reporting techniques. And it's a breezy, entertaining, easy read, as one would expect from someone with longtime tabloid writing experience.
However, the best and most comprehensive tabloid HISTORY remains I WATCHED A WILD HOG EAT MY BABY, by Bill Sloan, which was released in 2001.
Also, reviewers are wrong when they say that Sternig's is the first inside report from a former tabloid reporter. In 1996, a darker inside look from two former tabloid reporters was provided in POISON PEN, by Lysa Moskowitz-Mateu & David LaFontaine.
A great gift for friends who read the tabloids.......2003-10-03
SECRETS OF A TABLOID REPORTER is a reader's first look at the secret world of the National Enquirer and the famous people
it exposes. Author Barbara Sternig was a Senior Reporter for 20 years covering Hollywood for this tabloid. Before that, she was writer/producer/assistant to Gossip Columnist Rona Barrett and had Hollywood welcoming her most of the time.
In this fast-moving nonfiction book, Sternig tells how she got her startling stories with their intimate details. No matter what obstacles she faced, Barbara always seemed to come up with the story (although at times the crazy antics in pursuit of stories almost got her into thick trouble.
She shows her ability to capture our attention, awaken our curiosity, and keep us interested, but she refused to give us the name of the man she loved and lost, showing us something is sacred to her.
But there didn't seem to be much held back when she described her adventures writing about Frank Sinatra and his gang, Angie Dickinson, Richard Burton, Tammy Wynette, Burt Reynolds or Pat Sajak's wedding with Vanna White as guest. This book keeps you turning pages. It would make a great gift for a friend who reads the National Enquirer.
Maryanne Raphael, Writers World
A Fun Read.......2003-02-17
I just finished reading "Secrets of a Tabloid Reporter" and I loved it. It made me laugh out loud! Especially the Richard Burton escapade! I have never laughed so much with a book. I should live such a fun life. Thanks Ms. Sternig for a fun time. Patricia Pearson- Chicago, Il.

Incisive Diary Clarifies Many Holocaust-Related Misconceptions.......2007-09-07
Abraham Lewin kept a diary from early 1942 through early 1943. He focused on the mass deportation of Warsaw's Jews to their deaths at Treblinka in mid-late 1942.
Lewin elaborates on the cooperation of Poles and Jews in the smuggling of food and other items into the Warsaw Ghetto, including the habit of the Polish Blue Police (Policja Granatowa) turning a blind eye to such smuggling (p. 62). He sided with those Jews who believed that Polish-Jewish relations had improved as a result of their common suffering (pp. 123-124). And, although Lewin mentions some examples of Poles denouncing fugitive Jews, he later makes it clear that Poles were not responsible for the roundup and extermination of Jews. For example: "Twenty Ukrainians, Jewish policemen (a few dozen) and a small number of Germans lead a crowd of 3,000 Jews to the slaughter." (p. 151).
In common with some other chroniclers, Lewin reserves his harshest criticism for the collaborationist Jewish ghetto police. For example: "Russian pogromists would have been unable to make a more thorough and shattering pogrom than that carried out by the Jewish police." (p. 160). "Today, the Jewish police carried out the `action' with savage brutality. They simply ran riot." (p. 164).
Some recent Holocaust materials have included the totally preposterous suggestion that the Poles somehow consented to the extermination of the Jews on their soil, or that Polish protests may have saved the Jews. In actuality, the Germans had not the slightest concern about the wishes of the Polish untermenschen. A protest was a form of suicide, as Lewin relates: "A Christian woman on Leszno Street, seeing the wagons with those who have been rounded up, curses the Germans. She presents her chest and is shot. On Nowy Swiat, a Christian woman stands defiantly, kneels on the pavement and prays to God to turn his sword against the executioners--she had seen how a gendarme killed a Jewish boy." (p. 141)
Although Jews and Poles may have been "unequal victims", Lewin doesn't neglect the latter: "Let us not forget: the Poles are in second place in the table of tragic losses among the nations, just behind the Jews. They have given, after us, the greatest number of victims to the Gestapo, and this does not take into account the destruction of the country." (p. 124). "Jewish and Polish blood is spilled, it mingles together and, crying to the heavens, it demands revenge!" (p. 125).
Lewin mentions the German "action" against the rural Poles in the Zamosc region (p. 227), and comments: "In fact, there are reports of unrest and turmoil among the Poles over the mass-expulsions of Poles in the Zamosc area." (p. 233). Lewin had no illusions as to what the Germans were capable of: "They began with us and will finish with other peoples: Poles, Czechs, Serbs and many others." (p. 239).
In the 19th century, Polish mystic Andrzej Towianski thought of the Polish people as the "Jesus Christ of Nations", whose sufferings would save the world (p. 264). But Poles were not alone in such musings. Interestingly, Lewin wrote of his entertaining of Towianski-like thoughts about the Jewish people (p. 117).
A Strikingly-Balanced Eyewitness Account of German Crimes.......2001-08-31
Abraham Lewin, the author, is a Jewish eyewitness of events the Warsaw Ghetto. His narratives are in striking contrast to most popular-level Holocaust materials, which portray Poles in a unilaterally negative light while also completely ignoring the negative aspects of Jewish behavior. Lewin, for instance, focuses on the marked depravity of the Jewish collaborators, especially the Jewish ghetto police, and strongly condemns them for helping send then-200,000 Jews to their deaths. Lewin demonstrates, with examples, that large-scale Polish behavior of helping Jews far exceeded the few Poles who harmed Jews. And, despite observing the sufferings and deaths of his fellow Jews firsthand, Lewin refrains from a purely Judeo-centric approach to the Holocaust. In several places in his narratives, he speaks of German crimes against Polish gentiles. In particular, he discusses the widespread German terror (murders of Polish gentiles, and the destruction of Polish villages) in the Zamosc region. He even acknowledges that, after the Jews, Poles were in second place as victims of the Nazi Germans. He concludes: "Jewish and Polish blood is spilled, it mingles together and, crying to the heavens, it demands revenge!"
I only wish that modern approaches to Holocaust education displayed the same attitude, and balance, that Lewin did.
